Margaret, I am madder than a wet hen and anyone looking for humor in this post probably isn’t going to find it. The best thing that came out of writing this webpage blog was learning what the term Asshat means. I wish we knew the person who first wrote that years ago because it has become one of my favorite words, and when it comes to Asshats there isn’t a better example than Texas Governor Greg Abbott. If anyone out there still thinks there isn’t a Republican war on women, I suggest they look in the mirror to see what hat they are wearing as well.
Denying women access to family planning will increase the number of abortions. Even an asshat knows that. And Abbott knows that tens of thousands of women in Texas use Planned Parenthood for basic family planning and gynecological care.
Planned Parenthood has NOT been found guilty of any wrong doing. None. Dozens of investigations and no one has gone to jail and no charges have been made. Why? Because Greg Abbott is a liar. His personal religious beliefs have no bearing when it comes to a woman’s constitutional right to a have a safe and legal abortion and, if she so chooses, to then donate fetal tissue to aid in life-saving medical research. But Abbott has said ongoing investigations based on edited, misleading videos are reasons to defund Planned Parenthood. By the way, most Planned Parenthood clinics don’t even participate in those research programs and therefore have never donated fetal tissue. And in Texas only one clinic participated and that research was conducted with the University of Texas Medical Branch in a study to better understand how to prevent miscarriages.
Medicaid reimbursement isn’t rocket science. Qualified health care providers get reimbursed for providing services to qualified patients for APPROVED services. The vast majority of people receiving services from Planned Parenthood live at 150 percent of the federal poverty level or lower.
Abortion is not a qualified service unless the pregnancy is the result of incest, rape or will result in the death of the mother. And more often than not coverage is denied due to political bias. Reimbursement even with rape or incest is so restrictive in Texas that it almost never happens, eventhough the Hyde Amendment is the current law of the land. But not allowing Medicaid to be legally used for those abortions wasn’t enough for Abbott. He and the Republicans and their merry band of right-wing Christian idiots have now prevented poor women from accessing those funds for birth control, cancer screenings and basic gynecological care. Greg Abbott already told women who have been raped and children who are victims of incest that he doesn’t give a shit. And now he has told poor women that their lives are less valuable than wealthy women.
Greg,if you have to lie to make your point about Planned Parenthood, then maybe you are making the wrong point. Denying women access to services at Planned Parenthood will increase the number of abortions. I know it and you know it. And I am calling you on your bullshit.
Tens of thousands of Texas woman have decided to use Planned Parenthood as their healthcare provider. Some do so because the Planned Parenthood clinic is the only clinic they can get to, but most do so because (God damn you, Abbott) WOMEN LIKE PLANNED PARENTHOOD. And who is Abbott to decide we can’t go to our provider of choice?
Greg Abbott thinks that his personal religious beliefs allows him to abuse his position of power and force women to do what he says. From where I sit, Abbott is no better than a rapist. And Greg Abbott knows damn well that his politically motivated actions will increase the number of abortions in Texas. He is an Asshat. I mean it. Really.
IF YOU SUPPORT PLANNED PARENTHOOD SAY SO IN THE COMMMENTS BELOW.
BRAVA!!!!!

A nurse practitioner at Planned Parenthood saved my daughter’s life. A breast lump my uninsured daughter felt (at age 28) could have been easily dismissed. But the NP and PP persisted and found funding for the ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy that found stage IIIA triple negative breast cancer. Of course I support Planned Parenthood!

Thank God for Planned Parenthood. The great medical professionals there provided me with guilt-free services when I first moved to California and had no job and no insurance. The offices were clean and bright and made me feel good about being there, taking care of my healthcare when getting a Pap smear was kind of scary. Stupid men need to get their noses out of women’s vaginas.

I support Planned Parenthood and think it is well past the time for women to unite on this topic of our own healthcare! In the 21st Century it is an outrage that any one, any MAN in particular, gets to decide where and how we receive our healthcare. Remember people, it is the Republicans who are doing this-they must be voted out!

I support Planned Parenthood. When I was a younger, uninsured female, I got a better checkup from them than from my previous doctor. When my daughter had reached a point where she was ready to become sexually active and we were without insurance, I took her to Planned Parenthood. (And she was over 18 – possibly over 20 now that I think about it – and in a long term relationship.) I also feel that any young female who is not in a secure enough relationship with their parents should be able to get whatever help they need without parents being notified.

I live in Texas. Can you imagine? All of our statewide elected officials are Asshats. (I love that term – I have taken it as my own.) I no longer use PP as my provider, because I have health insurance, but I sure relied on them when I was young. And no, I have never had an abortion. I got HIV tested, had access to contraceptives (thus, no abortion needed), etc. And it’s where I directed my son when he thought he might have an STD.

I support Planned Parenthood. Healthy women mean healthy families. In fundamentalist regimes male politicians demonstrate their power by forcing women to cover their faces or be confined to the house uneducated and poor. In Texas they do it by denying women reproductive health and control of their own bodies.

Helen I love you and I love Planned Parenthood. When I was a young woman, about to start my married life, my husband and I both used their services to make sure it would be safe for us to attempt to conceive a child and to plan FOR the eventual pregnancies I might have. I used their services again between pregnancies, to help prevent conception that would jeopardize my own health, should I conceive too soon after giving birth. They helped to make sure that the subsequent pregnancies I had were healthy as well.
Thank you for joining us in the WORK to keep safe, legal, and affordable health care a reality for as many women Planned Parenthood is still able to serve.

Perfectly said, Helen. Defunding PP & making it harder for women to get access to birth control will increase the need for abortion services. Roe vs Wade was not the start of abortions, just safe, legal ones. The Republican governors & legislators in red states are doing everything they can to limit women’s rights. It is not our imagination. There is a definite war on women

I agree with everything you wrote here. We have been cursed with asshat governors since Ann Richards left office. Texas politicians decided not to take the federal money to expand Medicaid in this state, which has an obscene number of uninsured people. There have been statistical projections of how many Texans have died too early as a result, and it’s in the thousands. They died because the Republican Party would not have anything to do with the ACA. They already hobbled planned parenthood by restrictions on abortion providers so that we have only two clinics in the state that provide those services. Private citizens helped to fund transportation service for women who need help getting to those clinics.
And yet the poor and uninsured still vote for these people.

If you provide birth control the need for abortions drops. If you provide mammograms lives are saved. If you provide medical check ups that help a woman maintain her health she can care for her family and work. If you counsel and support a woman that is a victim of rape or incest…unconditional and nonjudgemental support…you are providing a crucial service. Planned Parenthood is necessary in a country that doesn’t support the needs of women…we are that country. We need PP. Women who don’t vote, women who buy into the lies about Planned Parenthood, because of misguided religious domination and messages perpetuated by groups who have a clear agenda, and women who don’t support women who don’t have the access to the care they have or the ability to pay for it are a problem I don’t understand. I can almost understand the asshat…he’s stupid, almost certainly has no idea where babies come from and if he does know how they get in there I’m sure he can’t talk about the process of production and getting them out…but women I don’t understand.

I stand with Planned Parenthood. I cannot get pregnant, but I have used PP for compassionate, affordable women’s healthcare services. I would like to add to that, however, the text from a Facebook post I saw recently which states,
“I don’t care if Planned Parenthood provides nothing BUT abortion services. I don’t care if it’s a million-story abortion superpark with abortion waterslides and an abortion electrical parade. Abortion is legal. ABORTION IS LEGAL. If I read one more “defense” of Planned Parenthood that says “it’s not JUST abortions!” or “only 5% of what they do is abortion! And abortions aren’t federally funded!” I’m going to abort myself. Abortion is legal, culturally necessary, and good for humanity. It has been and will be practiced for millennia. It is essential. It is a fact. By minimizing, denying or apologizing for this fact, you are allowing these venal anti-woman Nazis to frame this debate and continue to chip away at this essential right. Abortion is not tragic. It is not painful. It is a fact. It is a right. Demand it, fight for it, and for the sake of the women who have given their lives to defend it, stop apologizing for it.”

Having seen poverty up close in the person of my best friend, who grew up middle class, but ended up working 3 jobs to keep food on the table for her 4 children after her husband left her for another woman and rarely if ever paid child support (before any legislation). If anyone thinks they are immune from poverty, I suggest they look around. We are all one payday away from it they say. Beyond that, this is supposed to be a country by & for the people; not a country ruled by a few ultra rich “kings” as it seems to be becoming. Time to take it back with our votes and contacting our “representatives.”

Although I have never had to go through Planned Parenthood, it is a Godsend for so many women…and those against it are so very sad…and the women that are so against them should be ashamed of themselves! Perhaps Greg Abbott should partner up with Carly Fiorina and ride off into the sunset together!

The only other person involved with decisions of my vagina is my husband (only when I give him the green light), otherwise; all others need to mind their freaking business. Politicians, wake-up and step away from the choices I make with my body- I support PP, because 20 years ago when I lacked health insurance they helped me through a few cancer scares and funded my birth control which in turn assisted me to complete my education and offer a much more comfortable life for my little ones. I now have a tween daughter and there is no way anyone other than herself will make choices on her behalf. ENOUGH SAID!!

The reasonableness and knowledge of Science is far and above the unchanging dogma of religions. Abbott was just brought up in dogma town and didn’t leave out of fear or lack of knowledge. He is doing the best he can with what he has to work with. He just doesn’t have a lot to work with ! ! ! Dave Pasch, Helena, Ohio

It’s time to vote the asshaticans out of office and keep them out until they come to their senses, (not that they ever had any or ever will). Remember when you go to the polls, that you need to find out more about all your elected officials at every level, because that dog catcher or school board member is possibly using that office to work their way up the ladder. So no asshats in any office. Let’s clean them out and send them back to where they belong.

Planned Parenthood deserves so much better treatment than the right-wing politicians have dished out over the last several years. Prejudice from the right largely comes from an uneducated public that is clueless to the economics of poverty…rather, just plain clueless to economics: personal, home, health, national, or international.

I like Planned Parenthood. Young women should be able to get birth control to avoid pregnancy, and an abortion if they want one. It is no one else’s business. We are not government property and they have no right to legislate our bodies. Get the government out of our bedrooms and out of our families.

I have never had to used Planned Parenthood, but I stand firmly for everything they do.
I can understand people having personal beliefs about abortion, but it seems that these same people (usually Republicans) do not follow through after the baby is born. They hate welfare programs for the poor, so what if that new child is hungry. They seem to hate educational funding because they don’t want to pay taxes. They’ve never heard the old proverb that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Anyone have Abbott’s e-mail address? We should all be forwarding Helen’s posting directly to him — along with our comments.
Which brings me to another point. I usually avoid reading comments to anything because they are usually posted by stupid people who, sadly, seem to be aching for some sort of attention. But I have gone through every comment made here and I am totally blown away by the quality of everything said. What a relief to know that there are articulate, intelligent people still left in this country! We women rock!!! Now let’s get off our own asses and get these asshats (all of them) out of office.

Count me as PP supporter number gazillion and one… How a governor’s office can put out a “news” bulletin that talks about “gruesome videos filmed at Planned Parenthood facilities,” when every sane person knows they WERE NOT, and that THIS IS A LIE, is beyond me, for starters.
But my real question is… WHO MAKES MONEY WHEN WOMEN ARE DENIED REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES? I’ll be damned if I can figure that out… But I’m sure someone does, because the GOP right-wingers make no decisions, ever, if some corporation doesn’t make a profit from them. Sure, they blab about “morals,” but it’s about cash… Anybody got any ideas here?
Also agree with the irony that at least one poster pointed out: All this crap about how “Obamacare” denies Americans their “free choice” of medical services… And Abbott, in one fell swoop, denies tens of thousands of “Americans” their provider of choice. Citizenship is denied to ovary-bearers in Texas…? Apparently!

I support Planned Parenthood. I was the consultant pharmacist for 5 PP clinics in El Paso and Sierra Blanca for a couple of years. These clinics provided all kinds of gynecological services to women, birth control to males and females, treatment for stds, post-menopausal hormones, and they even had a clinic that served the HIV/AIDS population. None of the clinics provided abortions and unfortunately they closed because of management/financial issues. The staff at these clinics were some of the most goodhearted, dedicated health professionals that I’ve ever met. I believe that limiting these services in the state of Texas will have an impact on the choices that are available to men and women. Get out and keep voting so that we can turn this state blue !

I support PP 1000% and Abbott is definitely an ASSHAT. In the 70’s I was actively involved in women’s issues and rights in Dallas and interacted with a lot of groups. During that time, lots of smart Republican women also worked to promote the rights of women — including the right to choose. Today, I wonder what happened to all those Republican women who cared about women’s rights. Why have they been silenced?

As a woman, as a mother of three adult daughters, and as a citizen of the United States, I fully support Planned Parenthood.
Just this morning there are several articles online about human sex slavery. To think that right now, in 2015, women and girls are being held captive as sex slaves, and at the same time are being criticized for wanting to have control of their own sexual lives and reproduction is ironic. Why are men so threatened by the idea of a woman controlling her own body? Makes you think, doesn’t it? We ARE that powerful, and we need to take that power and USE it, right now, to stop this bullshit.

The fact that we even have an ASSHAT like this as governor is evidence of the very misinformed robotic voters who automatically push the R button at the polls as if they are led there on leash. I ask for people to stop, look and llisten and vote responsibly–lest they get this for so called leadership
Planned Parenthood should be supported and Cecile Richards should get an award for putting up with 5 hours of male dominated attacks in Congress showing true ignorance and ugliness. Maybe the women in Texas will wake up and go to the polls to rid themselves of these hypocrites-Planned Parenthood will have to sue, as to deprive them of Medicaid funding on the basis of lies which have been proven to be lies will hopefully be thrown out. I only wish that Mr. Abott would be forced to personally provide health care services out of his own pocket to all ladies affected by this insanity. People wake up and vote responsibly! I wish the people who vote for Asshats like Abbot could see how they are being manipulated by the rich. In the 60s a person could make a living working 40 hours per week. Most everyone had a good health care plan as well. At that time CEOs were making 25 times the pay of workers, now they make 300 times the amount. If pay for workers were to have kept up with the pay for CEOs, the minimum wage would now be over $23/hour.

In addition to the medical services rendered to woman in need, the family planning services reduce unwanted pregnancies, reduce abortions and reduce poverty. Poverty is highly correlated with increased family size, so managing family size is important. It should also be noted the fastest growing homeless population in America is single working mothers. So, birth control is as important as sex education and esteem building, where teens can be taught that their esteem is not linked to sexual partners.

I strongly support Planned Parenthood! Most people do. And it is A FACT that there are NOT enough alternative providers for Medicaid patients; there already are too few providers who will even accept Medicaid patients, due to the extremely low reimbursement rates (many medical services are provided at a financial loss). Also, many of these “alternative” clinics do not offer the same comprehensive services for women’s reproductive health that PP does (i.e. most primary care clinics don’t offer insertion of IUDs or implantable methods of birth control). Politics has no place in the medical exam room.

I support Planned Parenthood, but it is not enough. The right to abortion isn’t a right if you can’t afford one. After giving to PP, please dig deeper and give generously to the National Network of Abortion Funds, or to a fund that is local to you. Righting these wrongs is very important, but that doesn’t help the women who are denied their rights **today**. Please give. http://www.fundabortionnow.org/

I support Planned Parenthood and have ever since I was 18 (that’s 44 years ago, but who’s counting)! Every time one of these asshats pulls another stunt like Abbott, I double my contribution. And Cecile Richards can stand up and represent me every day of the week. That apple didn’t fall far from the tree. I miss you, Ann Richards!

All that you say is true, and moreso. The reason this can fly in Texas, is that there are many people there who feel as he does. These “Christians” believe that abortion is a sin, and that their way of thinking is the only true way. They feel they have a right to tell others what the right way (their way) is, and that we are all going to hell if we don’t believe what they do. They feel it’s their responsibility to keep us from going to hell. I have been to those churches, and I know people like that. It’s maddening, but reason isn’t their chosen way.

There is stupid and then there is more stupid. There are dumbasses and then there are Asshats. Definitely an Asshat. Wonder if he went home yesterday, kissed his (Latina) wife and then said, “Well honey, I got up, went to work and sued the federal government today…er, that was my last job. Today I got up and just used my executive privilege to shut down Planned Parenthood. Lawsuits take too much time.” I thought now that he was governor he might have better things to do with his time…like govern. Guess not.

Way to tell it like it is, Helen! I am with you 100%! Abbott absolutely IS an asshat. Women to him might as well be earthworms for all he cares. Does he have a wife? Mother? Sister? Daughter? Is he as disrespectful and hateful to them as he is to the women in Texas who have used Planned Parenthood? And who does he think he is to tell women what they can and can’t do with their own bodies? He is enough to make God Himself puke!

I live in Texas and can tell you what Helen says is true. Abbott is an Asshat or worse. I can think of lots of words I would call him. Yesterday when I read about this I commented on Helen’s last posting – didn’t know what else to do. I was livid then and am livid now!!!!! I thought PP would file suit today because I don’t think he can legally do this. PP will spend a butt load of money on this AGAIN. They already are in Louisiana where that little guy is, you know, that Jindal, the little brown one, as George Bush Sr. said one time about Jeb’s kids. What an idiot!!! I say on here and in every format I can that Planned Parenthood provides birth control and well woman exams to thousand of women every day. I am so fortunate that I am no longer in a position to need them. But, 43 years ago, I had two little kids – one a tiny baby. Both my husband and I were working. But oh, so poor. Both of my children were sick – one terribly sick with kidney disease that did finally kill him 3 years ago at age 40. But back when he was tiny and the docs were telling me he would not live to see his 5th Birthday, I could not afford to go to a regular doctor for my check-ups and birth control pills. Many times it was a choice – medicine for the kids and doctor bills or food. I was out of everything… money, soul, heart, energy, just everything. I had enough with the two I had much less bringing more children into my family much less to this world. I thanked God many times Planned Parenthood was there for me. I could get my annual check-up and buy birth control pills for $2/month. I cannot tell you what a relief that was. Thank you, Planned Parenthood. Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!! Since then, both my boys grew up. My husband and I advanced in the working world always concerned about insurance coverage. My husband worked for the same company for 45 years because we had to have continual coverage. Things eventually got OK, except for the constant worry about my boys’ health. Through the years, I have donated money to PP because I believe in their work so strongly. At first not much money except what I could save back but now part of my annual giving plan. One time, I drove by a clinic where a protest was going on. I hate those sanctimonious irrational fools! Get a job not protesting something you know nothing about. I actually stopped that time, fought my way in to the door, went in and gave the person at the desk a $20 bill for a donation. It was all I had at the moment. I gave it to her and told her I hate those idiots outside and this is my response. I wished her well as well as the remainder of folks inside. I also believe very strongly in a woman’s right to choose whether to have an abortion or not. And, thank God there are clinics that can provide that service too.
Greg Abbott is just the newest Asshat in Texas, maybe the worst. It started with George Bush Jr, then his Anointee, Good Hair Perry (looks like his fake glasses didn’t help his sanity much either!), now Abbott. We have not had a good Governor since Ann Richards!! And, poor Wendy lost to this fool. I’ve been crying every day since. Abbott makes me want to drive all the way to Austin and….. We need to have a protest!!!!!!!!

Right on, Helen. I’ve been appalled at how the right wing has twisted and lied about Planned Parenthood in order to prevent them from serving the people who need them. I’ve been a supporter all my life, even though I’m male and gay, because they provide necessary services compassionately and confidentially. I give them money every year, and will continue to do so no matter what the Asshat Brigade, a.k.a. Republican politicians, try to dishonestly pin on them because I know from my female friends how important they are. Screw Abbott and the horse he rode in on.

I also am a lifelong supporter of Planned Parenthood. I used it for years because it was the only place that I could go to receive much needed family planning and birth control at reasonable prices/free sometimes. I used PP through one marriage and well into this one because of the care and compassion shown by the Nurse Practitioners there. I will make sure that until my dying day that now that I am well off, in large part because I didn’t HAVE to have children, that I fund them. When I pass away I hope it won’t be necessary to fund them, but just in case it is, they will be funded to the tune of our entire estate. F*ck you Republicans. This is MY body and I will fight to the death for MY rights and the rights of other women to come.

Following the preposterous and insufferable Relublican congressional “hearing” in which they grilled Cecile Richards for hours, ranting and spewing “questions” after which they spoke over her, cut her off, allowed no time for responses, held up bogus charts to prove nothing other than their own bias and lies, I marched straight over to the local Planned Parenthood and wrote a $250 check. This was a donation hoping to help women in need, yes, but given to honor Ms Richards and staff at all Planned Parenthood facilities who work tirelessly Toward a common goal: Assist women to receive medical care.
Gov Abbott sued and received million$ following the accident which paralyzed his legs, yet he is utterly rigid and unwilling to help others in need. Seems to me the tree that fell on Greg Abbott affected more than his legs. What a disgrace.
