Margaret, I seem to be all over the map these days. Presidential politics, Texas politics, the immigration debate… But if I am going to be so stressed about politics, I need to balance things as I have always done…with food. And I know what people reading this are saying already: How unhealthy.
Really? That’s what you say to someone well into her eighth decade? I’d say I’ve beaten those odds. And you all should see how much pie Margaret eats… and she’s thinner than a silver dollar. She looks like a zipper when she sticks out her tongue. Plus, she’s so tall if she fell down she would be halfway home. I love you honey, but eat a potato chip every now and then.
Listen, I’m fat because I eat pie and think I get enough exercise just pushing my luck. I could stand to be a little healthier in my habits. But I know we would all be a little happier if at least one meal a week tasted good enough to be bad for you.
Speaking of bad for you… These nuanced presidential press conferences about ISIS have got to stop. No one wants to hear that we are going to systematically degrade ISIS and ultimately defeat them. Tell us that we will wipe their sorry asses from the face of the earth and then go back into the oval office and work with your generals to begin the systematic degrading. Mr. President, you are too smart for your own good. This is America. You need to add a little bacon to your green beans. They’re less hard to swallow that way.
And speaking of hard to swallow, Texas politics is full of more wind than a corn-eating horse. I’m speaking, of course, about the latest television commercial from Greg Abbott, or as I like to call him – that guy in the wheelchair. And I know what everyone is saying now: How insensitive.
Really? That’s what you say to the fat old lady in a wheelchair? At least I’m not using my disability to garner votes. When you watch that ad, it’s kind of hard not to see him as the guy in the wheelchair. But hey, whatever works. Right?
Although, here is what the ad doesn’t tell you:
When Abbott was still in law school, he was jogging through a wealthy neighborhood in Houston and an oak tree just fell right on top of him. I’m not foolin’. It was a freak accident that put him in a wheelchair for life. Tragic. Just tragic. Now, Greg did what lots of folks would do: He sued the homeowner… and a tree company. In addition to claiming medical expenses the lawsuit included non-economic damages including mental anguish and physical impairment, as well as the reduced capacity to work. His settlement which still gives him monthly payments, amounted to more than $10 million, tax-free. Well I say, good for him. I’ve got no problem with using the courts to right a wrong. Of course, Greg seems to have changed his mind now that his day in court is over. He’s built a career on making it harder for other Texans to sue their wealthy neighbors as he had done.
As a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, Greg supported limiting non-economic damages such as mental anguish. He helped pass laws that limit the amount others can now sue for. As Texas Attorney General, that jackass even tried to strike down the portion of the Americans with Disabilities Act requiring equal access to public buildings. When questioned, he told reporters, “Because I filed a claim of my own, should I forever be foreclosed from criticizing frivolous and abusive lawsuits?” This from the guy who has sued the federal government 27 times – 20 since Obama has been in office.
What’s good for the goose, is not good for the gander on Greg’s farm. In today’s Texas, Greg would be the much less wealthy guy in the wheelchair – probably suffering from the mental anguish of having been cut down in his prime with no avenue to make it right. That’s politics for you: Full of assholes in and out of wheelchairs.
So to let off a little steam, here is a recipe for some food that might not be good for you, but will sure as hell make you feel better:
Take an eggplant, peel it and cut it lengthwise into thin slices – thin enough to roll up. Dip each slice in some buttermilk and then dredge it through some flour. Shake off the excess flour and then sprinkle with some salt and pepper. Make up a batch of goat cheese mixed with some roasted garlic, oregano and basil (or cilantro). Don’t worry about quantities. Your mouth is there for tasting. Add your favorite spices as you desire. Measuring spoons are pointless unless you are baking. Drop a spoonful of the cheese mixture on one end of each slice of eggplant. Roll it up so the cheese mixture ends up in the middle of your roll. Heat up some vegetable oil (or better yet, bacon grease) in a heavy frying pan. Fry the eggplant rolls until they are golden brown all over. Top it off with your favorite tomato sauce – I make mine from scratch but a jar will work too.
Now, turn off the TV. Pour yourself a glass of wine and if you didn’t take my advice about the bacon grease you can call yourself a vegetarian. Oh… and if you happen to live in the great state of Texas, come November, vote for Wendy Davis. I mean it. Really.
Helen, dear, the only thing that could improve your little eggplant recipe would be to follow it up with a great big slice of pie. Any kind will do. Life is full of questions and pie is always the correct answer.
Pie now, pay later.

Hi, Mageen – Still there…? Looks like we’ve got a few of us live ones resurfacing, once again, from the dismal swamp of spamalots, and some newbies, too…
Should I get into “Ebola,” or “the elections,” or “ISIS”…? Hard to know where to start. They all make me effing nuts!
I’ve been driven to “unsubscribe” from the DCCC because of their RELENTLESS, and often accusatory, emails – as many as six or seven a day, all asking for $$, and all saying how “shocked” they are by the fact that the opposition is spending tons of money to defeat Dems. Really…? That’s a “surprise”…? I doubt it. They just can’t be that stupid. I know they’re not. Just wish they’d treat us with a little respect, rather than like errant children who just haven’t ponied up sufficiently… (Jeez! These are “my people”! Give me an effing break here, please!)
Most important thing is that we all just get out there and VOTE. I think that, if we do, things will go better. If we don’t… Well… We’ll deserve what we get.
Hope all is well with you in Virginny. Getting kind of wintry around here in CT… But we expect that, about now. We don’t have to like it; we just need to know it’s coming… And we do.

Hello real people, Just wanted to say “I’m real too!” I kind of gave up reading the comments when James and the p’fessor took up sooo much space. and it was sooo long between posts. I’ve never asked to be on the email list so I didn’t realize what a mess the comment section had become. I think they are all looking to get clicked on (red ones are linked to their sites. I tried one and will not try any others) Anyway, Happy Election Season to all you other real people, I hope your favorite candidates win.

Good grief! Can’t believe I got left out for a month to see this! I don’t get emails from here anymore telling me there is a new one from Helen and Margaret too! On the original subject do pie and Wendy… I think I’ll just skip eggplant and everything that calls itself a meal and go straight for pie! Or cake or ice cream. I figure if that is all you eat, the calories are about the same. Sometimes I stop and get a giant cinnamon roll for breakfast about 10:00 at work. Then that is all I eat till dinner that night. See, about the same as lunch on the calorie count. Works, though I am not slim as a zipper, well not anymore now I am old.
For all y’all that live outside Texas… Send Wendy some money. We need her so much and she is asking for donations for her campaign for as little as $5. I been sending her money for over a year when I have a little to send. Ever since she turned me on with those pink tennis shoes. And, no that is not dirty. I figure that a woman who can stand up all those hours to fight for the rights of other women is my kind of gal. Been waiting for her since we lost Ann Richards and Molly Ivan’s. Send money, send best wishes, talk to your friends, GO VOTE! Help us turn Texas blue. We are due!
Now quite a bit has happened on the Ebola and/or Enterovirus 68. Ebola. If you live near around Dallas, I am surprised they don’t have a 24 hour channel by now. News people all over the place and helicopters following ambulances! Now the guy from Liberia done up and died. Making the fear worse. It is thought that the hospital sending him home the first time may have hastened his death. I don’t know. But you know he feared he had it, that is why he fled Liberia the way he did after his sister here bought him a ONE WAY ticket to Dallas. He thought he had a better chance of getting treated better here. Well, maybe so until Presby as it is known locally sent him away cause he had no insurance! They can deny all they want, but there it is. No insurance, you are going home period. Then yesterday afternoon they tell us a woman who was one of the healthcare workers who treated him has Ebola. What a pitiful thing. All of it. I ain’t scared cause I don’t live right close to there, but if I got sick, I would not go to Presby ER for nothing. Once again, the poor lady has a pet. Wonder what is going to happen to her precious companion!
Now I done said too much. But I do have a comment on the Enterovirus68. Two little children have died and that is a terrible horrible thing. But a lady I work with told me the other day that it has been “proven that it came to the US from all those thousands of children who crashed our border a couple months ago” promise, that is what she said. Disturbed me. I did a little research. Entero68 was first ID’ed in 1962. From 1970 to 2005 there were only 26 cases identified. In 2012, there were limited outbreaks in Japan, the Philippines and the Netherlands and some pockets of outbreaks in the US. The scientists don’t know why the larger outbreak this year and they don’t know why it is causing paralysis in some children. Not a bit of that sounds South American or Mexican to me. I don’t know what this world is coming to, but I do hope two things….Wendy and Leticia get elected and that President Obama bombs the snot out of Syria and wherever else he needs to to get rid of those evil head-cutter-offers. And anybody else who happens to be in the way of him gettin them!!
And I really wish Grandson would delete all these f****rs who are ruining this blog with trash.

Hi, Terri, and ACTUAL other humans on The Porch…
The fear-mongering thing is exactly what “people” want to do to keep us scared and distracted, so we don’t realize what’s actually going on.
Was very nice to hear from you, and from those very few of us who are still sentient around here – as opposed to those robo-hacks, of which we all must delete about twenty a day. Lordy; wouldn’t we want “Matthew’ to step up and say something about this…?
May be no “Matthew;” may be no “Margaret and Helen”… But WE seem to be real.
Thoughts…?

Hi, Mageen, and Terri in NY, and others who are insisting on retaining our porch chairs, god bless us, every one… Forgive me for not recalling each of you by name, which I should do, but momentarily can’t…
So now we’re all going to have our temperatures taken at the airport??!! Are you effing kidding me??!! Shoes off; jackets, shoes, and handbags in the plastic bins; full body screenings; laptops in a separate plastic bin; and a “temperature check”…?? We might as well just show up naked, with a note from our doctor, if we have one…
Jeebus; I think I’ll drive from now on. (Oh… And the airlines will object, because it will cause a decrease in air passengers, and they’ll lose money…) And then our tickets will cost more.
OH! And the pets of suspected Ebola contactees will have to be “euthanized,” too, because they might lick your face, and we don’t know if they can spread Ebola, but they might…
We’re living in a loony bin, and the MSM is telling us it’s real…
Gee… How strange that it’s mostly the “black people” who are treacherous, huh…? OOOOOHHH, Africa! OOOOHHH… Scary!

Hi Terri and Gato! Yes, I agree. There seems to be more than enough opportunities to draw the — lets be honest and frank about this — pants crappers out of hiding. I vividly remember as a toddler looking at the covers of magazines such as Life and Look which regularly carried the photographic horrors of WWII. I also just as vividly remember the polio epidemics and how my parents literally kept my sister and I in hiding during “polio season” which usually meant warm weather when we so much wanted to play outdoors. I remember lining up for polio vaccine when I first started college. I also remember the day when smallpox was pronounced dead! We beat all those things and more! Now there is this creeping dread about an ebola patient in this country. He is receiving excellent care. And ebola is not spread through the air. You would have to lick all the sweat off an ebola patient in order to get it and maybe you won’t even at that. Ebola is also a disease of poverty so bad there isn’t any hot water and soap to wash hands or anything else. Liberia seems to be containing the outbreak and I bless all of our military sent over there to construct the necessary care units. But I do wish all the damn drama queens, male and female, would take a pill!!!

I’ve gotta agree with you about the “fear” thing. When did we become such sissies? When I hear pols talking about ISIL being the biggest threat to civilization we have ever faced or alternatively Ebola, I want to ask them if they remember the Nazis, or polio, or smallpox or any of hundreds of other threats we have faced without fainting and/or peeing our pants.

Hey, Terri – At least one other live human here; take good heart! (Feel like chirping like a cricket…) About all I’m focused on now, as far as “politics” are concerned, is voting.
The whole “terrified of everything” posture gets me down: Ebola, ISIS, ISIL, Khouran, and, of course, yet another sweet young blonde girl missing, and a big scary black guy with dreadlocks being arrested as a suspect… Can you blame him for running off to Texas…? Maybe he’s “guilty” of something, and maybe he’s just scared shitless. And, of course, some NC trooper shot a black guy because, in response to being stopped, when his car was parked at a gas station, for a “seat belt violation,” and reached for his license “in an aggressive manner”… At least that cop was arrested.
I cannot imagine what those robohackers, or whatever they are, if they’re even humans, get out of sending these endless emails…
Delete, delete, delete…
We’re getting ready for winter around here… Very much not my favorite time of year. Had to put on socks yesterday, for the first time in months.

Hey Gato,
It’s kinda sad, just crickets around here these days. Not sure what’s up with the robo-posts, but they are just senseless.
On another note, I’m not too happy about getting involved in another war in the Mideast, but it’s a terrible problem and I frankly don’t think there are any good options. Unfortunately all the bad international news has drowned out recent good news about Obamacare. Not sure why anyone is voting GOP these days, but I am worried about the elections in November. Fingers crossed the Dems get out and vote. It’s pretty darn important.

I think they’re machines… Steam shower stuff; put more photos on your site; where did you get your platform; your site is slow… And so on. What a bunch of crap.
Should we give up…? What do you think…? Lots of others have…

The easiest way to do so would be to add an attractive luggage tag or possibly a brightly colored,
fun luggage strap on your bag. Once you have found the perfect background,
you can upload it to your Blogger page. tattoos aren’t as
rhythmic as they victimised to be, you may be predictable that it has been rigorously korea.
The thought of a piece of rubber-like material molded into a shoe may seem
like a shoddy idea, nevertheless proof is in the pudding, or the bank statements.

Hi there! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with
hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended
up losing many months of hard work due to no data backup.
Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?

When I look at your blog site in Firefox,
it looks fine but when opening in Internet

So good to hear from you both. Glad I check the site every now and then, it’s nice to have a GOOD surprise in my morning read. I find pie to be a valuable antidote to all the political posturing that takes place in this season. Just finished off the peach “Aunt Mary’s Tart” which is like pie with a cookie crust last night. Now I’ll try your eggplant recipe since I just picked several egg’ps from a generous neighbor who grows the most beautiful produce. Making and eating food is what wise women have been doing since the dawn of creation when the news is bad (funerals, elections, etc) and when the news is good (weddings, graduations, Fridays, etc)
It only takes a little bit of time to vote for the things you believe in. And after you vote, you can go home and have a little wine and pie if you think ahead and lay in the supplies and it’s even more fun to do with a group of people you encouraged to go to the polling place.

As far as Abbott’s(or Krauthammer’s) accident, it could have been much worse…..they could have spilled a cup of coffee!!!!!!
Wondering why anyone would vote for someone with “damaged mental health” according to her failed lawsuit

Since you brought up the subject of food, how about this? There is a school system in Vermont that has dumped a confection from the school lunch in favor of kale. What the heck is going on? We used to throw stuff like kale and other greens to the livestock. Oh, and rutabaga, too. I heard there was a way to grease up fresh kale a little and throw sea salt on it and put it in the oven for a bit. Its supposed to take the place of potato chips which are allegedly not a healthy food cuz of the grease they are fried in and the salt added to them. Somebody help me out here. This does not make sense!

Loved your post today! Live in TX (not by choice) and will be voting for Wendy! The US is getting to be like Western Europe of the 14-17th centuries… each state is carving it’s own individual identity and the only option seems to be moving, which is NOT as easy as it sounds.
Keep writing you two!

Margaret and Helen, you two are the bomb! Greg A-butt isn’t the only hypocrite in the newspaper. You may have heard of a guy named Krauthammer who writes for the Washington Post. He is also confined to a wheel chair cuz once upon a time in his youth (callow, of course) he snuk into a fenced swimming pool after hours at a hotel, took a dive and broke his back. He sued the hotel and won, something I cannot figure. He was the one in the wrong and he should own the risk. These days he is against “victims” and “victimization” of society with everybody suing for damages. Just doesn’t make a lick of sense does it. May Wendy and Letitia swoop into the winners circle come election day on the wings of angels!
Really. I mean it.

Because it is so cold in winter, such a party could warm bodies
and hearts – and you could use this texture. The very distinct and popular cartoon character they have used in their creations is Mario.
Enjoying a cartoon is as simple as renting or buying a DVD and playing it on your player.

I’m kinda glad the President isn’t on the television telling everyone exactly what he intends to do … ’cause the bad guys are listening and watching and expecting him to do just that. It’s what the last guy did, isn’t it? Told the bad guys exactly what all our plans were so they could be ready?
