LOVE THIS! Charlottesville et seq got me here, and I will be back frequently. I am another grammy that writes, and I do have a website- not using ‘wordpress’, but rather ‘weebly drag and drop’, with ‘Powweb’ as the server/host.The website is whatitis1.net , and it has basically 2 sections; the ‘Learn everything you can about everything you can’ (sort of emergency preparedness meets farming..), and the other section titled ‘what it is’, dealing with philosophy and other miscellany. I don’t get on there very often since I first put it up in 2012, and some of the links are probably no longer relevant. But Helen may move me to get back on

Dear M&H it’s so refreshing to know that a lot of people have their priorities straight. Now give it to us about all the commercialization of all holidays. Everything has been turned in to a giant free for all to buy things that will be obsolete in 2 years. When will people know when all they really need is “enough”. And love and understanding. stephanie – beautiful. the cucrhh was beautiful, the outside location in the wooded area was stunning, and the couple were glowing. the glow between the couple you captured beautifully. with each look, each glance, each shot the tenderness and love was emphasized. with the fast pace of a ceremony and reception somehow you manage to capture those glances that will last a couple a lifetime in photographs. it was beautiful and your use of black and white only continues to enhance the tenderness and love the couple shared on their day.

It’s Thanksgiving and I’ve just come across your blog… It’s been making me smile for the past 10 m I’ve been reading it. Actually it got me running on a whole bunch of emotions and thinking, since I don’t have my grandmas or mom anymore, how cool would it be to be as cool of a mom or grandma one day! I am a mother and grandmother. The attempts of the christian right through the republican party to trample on reproductive rights is appalling. These uninformed morons are so busy trying to tell everyone how to think that they have forgotten how to think themselves. Wake up! Your rights END where mine begin. And their rantings are racist as poor women are the ones who lose. Too bad the men who shriek the loudest are less than pure and also they refuse to make any provisions to help poor women. In fact, they would end what care poor women get now. And they call themselves Christians? Nazis is a much more apt term.

I know that my own 91 year-old grandmother has a lot to say that I want to remember, so maybe I’ll be able to follow your example…and I *love* the “best friends for sixty years and counting.” I hope that in 50 years (when we’re 85), my best friend Megan and I will do something together that’s “best friends for 80 years and counting.”

What a great idea you can up with! We lost our father 03-09-09 at the age of 84, and one of his greatest gifts to his 4 boys was a CD he made for the Library of Congress in the summer of 08.

Dad was a World War 2 combat vet, and went through some of the worst battles of the European theater. He went in on D-day and fought all across France, Belgium, and Germany. He was involved in the Eber Canal, The Bridge at Remagan, The Liberation of Auschwitz, and the Battle of the Bulge to name just of few of the more well know battles.

He earned two Bronze Stars for valor, and two purple hearts due to wounds received in combat.

The reason I mention this are so many people have no idea what treasures our parents and grandparents are. When we lose them, so much is lost if it’s not preserved in some fashion.

We, (my three brothers and I), could never really get him interested in the computer. Funny, he used to call me all the time to get reference material about some of the battles he participated in. From the web of course.

Anyway we talked him into participating in the Library of Congress, World War 2 conical project. This is being done with, and for, the “Greatest Generation”, so their stories are not lost in the mists of time. The CD that was made from his conversations with the historian is now one of our greatest treasures.

Your grandmother, Margaret, and others of that age ARE the greatest generation. They’ve seen so much more then we have, and to lose that wisdom and knowledge is something we can’t afford to do. Like your grandmother, my dad was very outspoken, and had a wonderful sense of humor. At 84, almost 85, he was still sharp as a tack. His body may have finally failed, but never his mind or spirit.

Reading the posts on this blog bring back many great memories. We only wish dad would have become interested and gotten involved with the cyber age.

Thank you for giving us your grandmother, and allowing her voice to be heard by many. It’s a gift to all of us and we appreciate it.

One final thing…Cesar Q, Kiss my skinny, white, 54 year old ass, you freaking moron. Save your Bull-shit for a Fundamentalist, Far Right, Tea-Partying, Neo-Con, Talking in Tongues, complete Ass-Hat blog or site!

These two ladies are National Treasures, where-as you by comparison are a total ass-hole and completely dead-brain to boot! Go party with Sarah and speak in tongues at that cult church she belongs to, you freaking idiot!

I have enjoyed so much reading your recent blogs because it’s a wonderful change from what passes for civil and reflective “discourse” here in Savannah, Georgia. I’m retired Army and I was the City Manager for Tybee Island (Savannah’s beach resort), so I’ve developed a thick hide, but the aggressive ignorance here has been wearing. I write a column for The Tybee News called “Over The Horizon,” so I’ve got a chance to reflect on events affecting Tybee and the nation. I’ll be checking your blog out on a regular basis; Molly Ivins took a level headed look at the world and I miss her. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the educator John W. Garner, but your blogs seem inspired by one of his quotes: “I sometimes think that history might easily say about this nation: It was a great nation full of talented people with enormous energy who forgot that they needed one another.” Ladies, my best to you and good blogging!!

I’m only a year younger than your grandmother so I have a good idea how she sees things, – honestly and without a lot of bullhockey tossed into the mix. I’ve been a blogger for many years, actually started when they were called discussion groups or webrings. When they first started they were filled with so much mindless blather that I was bold enough to predict that they would go out of business. Unfortunately I didn’t count on the low expectations of the blogger class.
Mostly I’ve stuck with political blogs but they have become completely predictable and practically uninformative. I’ve been on Huffpost pretty much since it started but am about to give it up because it is essentially unmonitored and the whackos have taken it over. There are so many idiots taking one-line pot shots at other idiots that it is almost worthless because the actual subject gets lost in the flurry of insults.
But since redsicovering your site, I think I might be around for a while.

A friend sent me the link to your blog, specifically your book review of the DAnn Coulter book. Yep, I typed DAnn because I think this is a man dressed as a woman. S(He) not only has huge feet but has an Adam’s apple to match!

I posted a link to your book review and a friend immediately came back and accused me of doing this blog! My name happens to be Margaret and my friend thought I was pulling a fast one by posting as Helen! LOL Don’t I wish I had Helen’s talent!

The part that made my friend think it was me was the blog entry entitled “Kiss my 83 year old ass”! LMAO! I am 65 and one of my favourite comments is “Kiss my ample ass”! I hope I can write something so inspiring when I am 83!

I was mad enough to spit nails when Sarah Palin came on the scene, and it prompted me to include one of the few political posts on my blog too (not nearly as humorously or well-written as Helen’s). Hi Matthew I just discovered your grandmother’s blog today via a link. I am 73 and have been blogging now for almost two years.

When my mother died I felt there were so many things I never learned about her and now I could not even ask. So I decided that I would write a blog that perhaps my two children might be interested in after I am gone. Neither of them read it now.

It is called Nobody Important and that’s the truth but I think of it as places I’ve been, things I do/did and hopefully they will be of interest to my children and maybe even a few more people. Somehow it ended up as so much more, although I don’t blog about politics but I do blog about books on occasion.

I started it off myself, with the help of a book and online research and have learned as I went along. I never hesitated to ask someone and bloggers are amazingly helpful people. Somehow I even ended up as a the administrator of a group of international bloggers so it has been an interesting experience.

Not only that but through blogging I met someone who got me interested in Second Life, a virtual world where I also spend a lot of time. I rent a house there and attend lectures and poetry readings and find it a fascinating place.

I think your grandmother is a very admirable person and it is great that she has so much verve and she has something interesting to say to more than your family. I’m very glad I found her blog and will add it to my bloglines feed.

Here’s what I did today after discovering your blog (thank you Andrew Sullivan): I emailed a bunch of people with your link, I posted your blog on my Facebook page and i joined the Margaret and Helen fan page on Facebook. I’m thrilled that you’re catching on.

I wish my grandmother Beatrice were still here. Here’s one of her sayings which I live by: “I’ve never been ashamed to know something and I’ve never been proud to not know something.” Maybe you could get M&H to tighten that up.

THIS SITE IS GREAT!!! A co-worker sent it to me and I laughed so hard . She (the co-worker) said this reminded her of me. (blush) But I have said abotut he same thing about Sara. She has not done a good job on her daughter or be close to her. NOt learning even in Alsaka to use protection , that is just plain stupid. Her running mate and her willhave lots of time to sit around and figure out were they went wrong.

I just discovered your website or blog, or whatever it’s called. Love love love it!!!

Here is some food for thought. I’m a physician who treats patients who are injured in auto accidents. In addition to their back and neck injuries, many of them have what we call “mild traumatic brain injuries” (MTBI). Some of them recover almost completely, but some of them are never quite the same. It’s not uncommon for such a patient so say, “I just got stupid”.

If a patient has had more than one MTBI, the affect is not additive, it is exponential. Each new brain trauma multiplies the deficits of the previous injury.

So why am I bringing this up. Well, my patients have only been injured in auto accidents. Bad enough, God knows.

Now let’s look at John McCain’s health history. I’m not talking about his recurrent Multiple Myeloma. I’m talking about his MULTIPLE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES (MTBI). After all, he crashed jets–at least 4 of them, maybe 6. The last crash in Viet Nam was the biggie. Even broke his leg and both arms. Can’t imagine that he escaped that crash without a significant brain injury. Make sense?

And then, there are his 5 years at the Hanoi Hilton. I don’t know how often he was tortured. Let’s give him a pass and say that it was only 1 time a month for 5 years. That would be 60…let me repeat…SIXTY savage beatings. I seriously doubt that there was a rule that said, Beat a prisoner anywhere you like, but spare the head. So we can assume that John, God help him, was beaten unconscious at least 60 times during that 5 years. That would constitute 60 TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES, on top of those caused by the jet crashes. On top of the 1964 car crash in which (it is whispered) someone in the car with him was fatally injured. He was taken to the Navy hospital with serious injuries. Another MTB!?

Medical literature has a description of people with multiple traumatic brain injures. They are impulsive, emotionally unstable, quick to flash to anger and suffer with anxiety and depression. They also have a hard time multi-tasking. I guess that’s why John had to leave the campaign trail so he could “concentrate” on the financial crisis in Washington that he helped to create… He couldn’t do TWO THINGS at the same time. Under extreme conditions of stress, multitasking is almost impossbile for someone with multiple MTBI’s. Being President might be just a little stressful. Ya think??

McCain’s reputation precedes him. He is the poster child for people with multiple MTBI’s.
So if you want to keep calling John McCain an ass, be my guest. But I give you permission (not that you needed it or asked for it…) to call him a BRAIN INJURED ASS. That is actually a more accurate and medically correct label. And in my medical opinion, that makes him even more dangerous than George Doubya. And that’s sayin’ something.
And don’t get me started on Ms. Alaskan Barbie…

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering why there were no posts archived here at Margaret and Helen from December 2007 to September 2008?

Dolores – “there’s a place in hell for women who don’t support other women” I’m guessing based on the nasty things you said to Helen that you are “supporting” the woman named Palin in the name of supporting all women. For me women, as members of the human race, are a wonderful mix of ideas and actions. Your requirement of supporting any woman just because she is a woman is asking me to abdicate our sex’s membership in that larger human race group – which is sort of sexist don’t you think?

You mention a paper by Michelle Obama – first I’ve heard of it why don’t you post link. Isn’t she a woman? Maybe she doesn’t count as one for you due to her race? Does not supporting her mean you’ll spend eternity in hell?

What if we just deal with Ms. Palin and Helen – hmm here we have two women with different ideas and attitudes. How do I know which one I should “support” to keep myself out of hell? Or do you not view Helen as a woman due to her age? I do, I’m proud to support her and have no worries about the after life. Helen and I will be OK as she lives in TX not FL and I live in CA – both have dry heat (like hell) and we all know what a brain stopper humidity is.

If Sarah Palin is a bitch, what do you call Michele Obama whose college thesis was a rant against the white race. Obviously your age is destroying your ability to judge people of true character, and you have chosen to go down the path of the uninformed, lying left. Try to organize your brain cells and remember that there is a place in hell for women who do not support other women. Of course, living in Florida, you should have no problem dealing with the heat when you get there.

Hi Matthew-
My grandma is 104 and very feisty and fun – she lives in her own apartment, is very independent, and takes very good care of herself (nails perfect, never let her hair get gray!, fashionable). She’s really an inspiration. Feisty is good!!!

My 76 year old mom has her own political blog (she never blogged before this election – or should I say before Sarah Palin was nominated).

Matthew, thanks for the info. As I was reading this blog, I wanted to start my own for my far-flung family. It’s better than communicating with one person at a time. Thank you for getting your Grandma Helen into the blogosphere. Clear writing that is also funny is so rare it’s great to be able to read it! For those of us who don’t have the joy of still having grandparents in our lives it’s an extra treat. Maybe you could set up a spot for some pie recipes too!

BTW what is it with Helens? My grandma was one too and also fiesty. My favorite story is pre-pre my birth. My grandfather was involved in getting the autoworkers union going in their city and some “guys” were sent to dissuade him from this by using a car to break both his legs. Gaga Helen spent that night sitting on the porch with an axe in her lap and I know if they’d been stupid enough to show up at the house I’d have an even better story to tell!

Love your Helen everyone, tell her that you do and hug her as often as you can that’s something you’ll never regret!

Thanks for getting your grandmother and Margaret to blog. Helen’s a hoot. A friend in FL send me the site and I sent it on to almost everyone in my address book-primarily in the NE but also to CA, AZ, CO and AK.
BTW, a new study that has come out says that seniors who use the Internet are more likely to stay mentally sharp longer. (I’m 64.)
