Margaret, if you want to know just how deplorable Trumpsters are, this week they elected two indicted criminals, a Nazi and a dead brothel owner. And the fact that most people reading this are asking themselves “which Nazi?” is just bat shit crazy. To be honest, it could have been multiple Nazis, but it’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference between a GOP Congressman and a Nazi these days. Some might be just your run-of-the-mill racists. You know what they say about old, white men standing in front of a flag, pledging allegiance to Donald Trump… they all look alike.
A dead brothel owner. I’m sorry. I just had to say that again. The party of family values elected a dead pimp. Bless their hearts but Republicans are nuttier than squirrel shit.
Now, I know that some of you Democrats out there, especially in Florida, Georgia and Texas, are filling a bit blue today and not in a good Blue Wave way. We’re feeling blue because we fell in love with Andrew, Beto and Stacey and hoped that racists in red states would be standing in line at a Cracker Barrel instead of a polling station. Damn you Cracker Barrel! What happened to your all-you-can-eat chicken fried opossum steak on Tuesdays?
Honestly, it was going to be an uphill battle and we got a bit ahead of ourselves. After all, this is Florida, Georgia and Texas we are talking about. They are GOP red mixed with a little scarlet, crimson, cardinal, ruby, magenta, brick, carmine, rose, vermilion, cerise, coral, and burgundy. The fact that Beto was even in the hunt and the other two are still too close to call is pretty amazing. Sure, it stung. But we really do have a great deal to celebrate. We took back the House. Our wave was big enough to overcome gerrymandering and voter suppression, sending several hundred state and federal members of the GOP packing.
If you are feeling a bit down, maybe this will pick you up. Here are a few of my favorite casualties:
Karen Handel. Remember her? This homophobic, she-devil in wolf’s clothing managed to destroy the otherwise stellar reputation of the Susan G Komen Foundation when she picked a fight with Planned Parenthood. Komen recovered somewhat but it never returned to its former glory. Well, now a Democrat in Georgia named Lucy McBath is my new favorite person and Georgia’s 6th Congressional District’s newest Representative. Kiss my ass Karen. The only organization I liked more than Komen was Planned Parenthood and you damaged one in order to attack the other. Don’t mess with Planned Parenthood. Ever. By the way, McBath ran on more gun control… in Georgia.
Kim Davis. This walking hairball in need of a hairstyle became famous in Kentucky for refusing to give marriage licenses to same sex couples, claiming Jesus told her to hate people. She then crashed a party pretending to be the Pope’s BFF and became the white trash darling for white trash religious nutjobs everywhere when she traveled to Romania to fight gay marriage there. Wait. What? Listen, folks. The cheese slid off this gal’s cracker years ago. Thank goodness that Kentucky Democrats dropped a house on Kim. To be honest, she lost by less than 700 votes, but that was to be expected considering she was related to, married to, divorced by and otherwise had children out of wedlock with a sizable percentage of the male voting population in the county. Hypocrisy is what the GOP now calls a family value.
Jason Lewis. I bet you don’t remember this asshat from Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District unless you’re a slut… I mean a woman… I mean a slut. Lewis complained that political correctness had gotten so bad that he couldn’t even call a woman a slut anymore without getting in trouble. He lost to Democrat Angie Craig. I don’t know you Angie, but I love you regardless of what Jason is most assuredly calling you at this moment.
Jack Phillips. He’s probably the most famous baker in Colorado, but not because his cakes taste good, bad or otherwise. Jack is the Colorado Baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay couple and took his argument all the way to the Supreme Court. He then tried to sue the Governor of Colorado because he didn’t want to bake a pink and blue cake for a transgender woman. Guess what? Jack now has a new Governor in Colorado. His name is Jared Polis and he’s gay. Please, please, please Governor Polis, order your inauguration cake from Jack if for no other reason than shits and giggles.
Kevin Yoder. I know nothing about this congressman from Kansas except he was a Republican in Kansas, which is rarely a good thing. He lost to a Native American woman named Sharice Davids. Now Sharice has a remarkable story and you should read about it. But I don’t want to talk about that now because I am being a little selfish. I just want to sit a minute and imagine Donald Trump watching Fox News on Tuesday when they gave a Democratic pick up seat to a woman who happens to be Native American and who also happens to be a lesbian and a mixed, martial arts fighter. Ah! Sweet mystery of life, at last I’ve found thee… Sharice honey, if you meet the President, please kick him where it counts.
Barbara Comstock. When Florida Parkland Students came to talk to her about gun violence, she refused to meet with them. Barbara lost to Democrat Jennifer Wexton. Bye, bye Barbara. Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.
Listen. I was sad. I wanted Beto as much as anyone. I really did. But here in Texas we picked up so many down ballot Democrats because of Beto that I don’t think being sad is an appropriate way to remember Beto, or Stacey or Andrew. And maybe its not even over for Stacey who is still fighting the good fight. Good luck Stacey. Every vote counts. But no. We can’t be down. We have just too much to be excited about.

- Chairwoman Maxine Waters, House Financial Services Committee
- Chairman Richard Neal, House Ways and Means Committee
- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the woman who gave us the Affordable Care Act the last time she had that title
That is huge. We took back the House and turned a huge section of the country blue, while Trump kept Georgia, Florida and Texas red… barely. We changed everything. He changed nothing.
Maybe the Blue Wave wasn’t as big in some parts of the country as others. As it swept from east to west across the country like an invading army of immigrants… no wait. As it swept from east to west, it hit patches of gerrymandering and mountains of voter suppression. But it indeed swept across the country no matter how large or small it seemed at times. One thing we know for sure, if left unchecked, Trump could bring out the worst in all of us. And sadly, he’s proud of that. But then again, he’s an idiot. The blue wave came, and it was big enough. I mean it. Really.

Dear reasonable people: Every few weeks, I take stock of my political position and ask myself if I have somehow been radicalized by the polarization of US politics. Every few weeks my answer is: no, my views are still well within the mainstream, and the republican party has just gone totally off the rails. Nazism did not happen overnight in Wiemar Germany. It took lots of average people gradually accepting more and more crazy ideas to finally get to it’s horrible conclusion. Sane people need to stand up.

Love you, Helen! One more possible seat to be announced this week. In a very close race where they are still counting votes, Democrat Ben McAdams is ahead of Republican incumbent Mia Love. If McAdams wins, it will be the first blue congressional win from Utah in many years.

America Has Spoken
There’s been a lot of post-election analysis, and speculation (already) about 2020. Donald Trump has called the midterms ‘winning’ for him. I don’t agree. There are a handful of undecided races (Florida and Mississippi Senate races and maybe a few others I’ve lost sight of). But those undecided races won’t change this lay-woman’s take.
I think the best thermostat of where we stand as a country lies in the graphics presented by the NY Times on Election Day coverage (as of this writing, still available at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/06/us/elections/results-dashboard-live.html) .
It clearly shows not only wins and losses, but also flipped seats. Here’s the breakdown:
In the House, Democrats flipped 35 seats. Republicans flipped 3. In the Senate, Democrats flipped 0, Republicans flipped 3. In Governor races, Democrats flipped 7. Republicans flipped 0.
The totals: Democrats flipped 42. Republicans flipped 6.
This is more than ‘telling’. This is an enormous, beautiful, hope-inspiring Blue Wave.
But this really isn’t about ‘blue’ or ‘red’. It’s about decency, equality, fairness, and compassion. That’s what this election was about, and that’s what won big-time in the end.
To Donald Trump: we are tired of you…. tired of your rhetoric, your racist ramblings and policies, your fear-mongering, your treatment of those who don’t agree with you, your treatment of the most vulnerable in our world, and your treatment of foreign leaders who have historically been our allies.
To the rest of the Republican Party: GROW A PAIR. The results are in and your approach isn’t working. With the exception of a few (Ted Cruz and Steve King, to name a couple)…. YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS. Or at least I’d like to think so. This isn’t about views on abortion, views on immigration, or even views on the 2nd amendment. This is about honesty and decency and doing the right thing for the people who elected you. This election tells you loud and clear: you are on the wrong side of history. Stop being a black mark. Stop being a disgrace. Start being someone your descendants will be proud of.

All the same, this Veterans Day, like all of them, meant a lot to me. Mu late husband served as did his two brothers, both them gone as well. Mu late father in law served in WWI in Europe. The “rain” wasn’t the real reason for the dishonor. We have had CIC’s before without a military background and they honored our Veterans on their Day.

A powerful poem, Cynthia… My brother was one of the most “pacific” humans I’ve ever known, and a Navy vet. He would NEVER have burned the US flag, nor would I. The real flag burning,” IMO, happens when people in power act in ways that defile and insult the values that flag represents, and for which so many veterans have served, suffered, and died. Those in the military should never be deployed to serve as armed “background material” for some photo op, nor be ignored and left to fend for themselves when they return home.
As for a “Commander in Chief” who declines to visit a memorial honoring those Americans who died in France, allegedly because of the “weather,” words truly fail me… I doubt that was the real reason, frankly, and suspect that something much more dire was going on – and still is.
Just a hunch…

Hey, Porch Dwellers… I somehow got “anonymoused” here; hope I’ve been “recovered.” Yes; loved this post, and, yes, it’s not over. Still have hopes for Stacey Abrams in Florida. Beto and Andrew Gillum are FAR from leaving the stage, I’m guessin’, and the blatant ratfcking we are now seeing is truly astonishing – unless you take another look at “The Godfather,” to see what’s really going on here. Pie lovers, the election flips just keep coming! Looks like Sinema is going to reap the benefit of a count on a lot votes heretofore overlooked! And the same is going on in other states where the R’s counted their chickens before they hatched. Projections now are that the D’s could have anywhere from 30 to 30 plus pickups in the House. that means stronger committees to investigate all the (bleep) thats been going on. The White House will hate it but hey, that’s democracy for ya!

Thank you. As a resident of one of the re-elected under-indictment person’s district, I needed to hear about the good results, (AND he ran on 45’s coattails! What is wrong with my neighbors?!) I exercised my privilege, fulfilled my duty, and voted, but felt unheard.
Speaking of feeling unheard (and in response to your previous post): I started to understand what people (e.g. in rural areas) were saying about being unheard. Or worse, heard but dismissed. It really is frustrating.

Unfortunately, if Wyoming and New York can only get the same number of senators regardless of population size, then the senate will always be a tougher goal to consistently reach. Porch dwellers, a word about what I saw on Tuesday at the polling place. It is an old Knights of Columbus hall that has been prettied up very nicely and the name changed to the MT. Vernon Columbus Club. I was once a county elections official – 12 hours for a whole hot $75 bucks. I was elated to see so many people assisting at the polls: teenagers off school for the day, millennial, retirees, all colors, sizes and shapes and all of them delighted to be there. The old polling record books are gone in favor of touch pads on a pedestal. The pads themselves are no bigger than a sheet a paper and work like a charm. Even my son voted and he was quite impressed. He might even vote again some time in the future. Frankly, his civic duty came as a surprise. He was so down in the dumps after the Presidential election I thought he would never shake it off. And to make things even better, my slate won. The Congressional Districts that everyone from everywhere else were watching as bellwethers did exactly what they were supposed to do. Sometimes things really do work out!

Kochsucking asshat Snott Walker finally got kicked out of the Wisconsin governors’ mansion along with his sockpupper LG Rebecca Kleefisch. Unfortunately, the state legislature houses are still majority Repub, but it’s a start.
I worked at the polls, and we had around 70% turnout in my voting district, with a total of 1,902 ballots cast, 300 of which were election day registrations (which Walker unsuccessfully tried to eliminate). Of those 1,902 ballots, Walker got only 101 votes, which is less than 1%.
Wisconsin also retained junior (but superior) senator Tammy Baldwin over deplorable challenger Leah Vukmir. Vukmir – that sounds like the kind of sound Brett Kavanaugh makes when he’s had too much beer and he’s kissing the porcelain goddess.

There is good news and a promise of better things to come. Williamson County Texas (yes formally deep red Williamson County) elected two progressive Democrats to the Texas House of Representatives. The Lege (in memory of Molly Ivins) is a good place to start. Remember the names James Talarico and John Bucy; you’ll be hearing of them again.

To make that Angie Craig vs. Jason Lewis story even sweeter, Craig is a happily married lesbian! The only things I cheered louder about on Tuesday night was the election of my own new Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, first Somali-American US Representative, and our new County Sheriff, a beautiful, smart, badass gay police officer named Dave Hutchinson, who kicked his Trump-loving, longtime incumbent opponent Rich Stanek to the trash heap where he belongs.

Nevada elected Democratic women for both our senators and our first Democratic governor in two decades! Clark County had convenient vote centers instead of assigned polling locations this year. Nevada just passed a measure for automatic voter registration at the DMV. Despite 5 Trump campaign visits, our blue wave rolled on!

I worked at a polling place in CO and was really thrilled to see all the younger voters registering and voting. CO state government went BLUE! Former felons in FL will be voting next time…Governors’ seats flipped, and down ballot races too. These are the wins that will help protect us from much of the shit show in the future.
Now, if we can just get more than half the eligible voting population to participate in the future, that will be the next step!
