Margaret, did you know that women currently make up more than half the population in the US, but we are represented by a Congress made up of 80 percent men? Oh, and honey, it gets worse. Among other countries we are ranked 104th in the world when it comes to female representation in government. Five places behind Saudi Arabia! Hell, we’re almost 40 spots behind Iraq… Yes. You heard me: BEHIND IRAQ.
How long before men realize that women are their equals? After last week, we can probably make the argument that we are more than equal. Everyone of those GOP Senators expected an overly emotional, erratic and maybe even hysterical witness… and let me tell you Brett Kavanaugh did not disappoint. If I were Brett, I’d be worried that The Donald might now try to grab his pussy. Christine Ford managed to stay calm and respectful for 4 hours. Brett couldn’t last 2 minutes before he came undone. And speaking of undone, Lindsey Graham deserves an award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Donald Trump’s new girlfriend. Move over Stormy Daniels. Hurricane Graham has arrived.
To be clear, Brett Kavanaugh is indeed innocent until proven guilty. And it’s not search and destroy like Kavanaugh and Trump want us to believe. It’s about making sure the truth comes out. Afterall, if there is nothing to find, then it doesn’t matter how hard you search. When a woman finds the courage to speak about sexual assault, she deserves to be heard. And hearing her means taking the time to fully investigate in hopes of uncovering the truth. And if that means men need to be a little scared, so be it. We women have been living scared all our lives. If you are worried for your sons, I have one piece of advice for you. Teach them to respect women. Problem solved.
But I don’t even know why I am wasting my time writing this. For the love of God, Republicans just elected a man who was videotaped bragging about assault. Are we really surprised they think a calendar showing exercise workouts during the 80’s is proof enough of innocence? If you are a Republican woman, I hope you are paying attention. It doesn’t matter how accomplished, how intelligent or how credible you are. You will be ignored, dismissed and even smeared if you stand between a Republican man and his path to power… regardless of what evidence you have or don’t have. If it happens in their teens, it’s boys will be boys, and if it happens as adults, it’s just locker room talk. Evidently Republicans are just fine electing men who sexually harass and assault women.
Honestly, how do Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins sleep at night? It’s been almost thirty years since the Anita Hill testimony, and we women continue to be ignored about sexual harassment, assault and rape at the hands of powerful men. There have been 52 total women in the United States Senate since its establishment in 1789. And one of those women simply served for one day. Until 2001, the most common way for a woman to become a US Senator was to be appointed following the death or resignation of a husband or father who previously held the seat. Today there are 21 female Senators – 16 Democrats and 5 Republicans… well 6 depending on which column you place Lindsey Graham. Quite frankly, he lacks the humanity to be in either. Imagine how differently things could be if there were 50.
The late Governor Ann Richards liked to say, “Life isn’t one thing after another. It’s the same damn thing over and over again.” Well, I am tired of fighting this fight over and over again. This November we have more women than ever running for elected office, and I for one plan to vote for them early and often. I mean it.
Well we did not win it all…we didn’t lose it all either! Women won! This is the beginning of the woman’s world/America. Encourage/support women in politics…from dog catcher to president.
Peace.

Anonymous, I am not in the best shape this AM = bronchitis which I am trying my best to treat at home rather than sit forever in the reception room of a doctor’s office or even a walk in clinic. The weather here is not that good for tomorrow, Election Day. Rain. Most likely all day. You have to be healthy in order to stand in line to vote when it rains. I am amusing myself by watching various talking head shows doing their calculus on the voting tomorrow. Right now it seems like it could very well be not just a blue wave but a blue tsunami for the Dems who have a startling line=up of women. Should I have voted absentee? After all, I am a senior citizen and November is so ditzy about weather. Well, no. Look what happened just recently in Alaska. One of the candidates suddenly dropped off the ballot and they had to figure out what to do with the submitted absentee votes. And, then, of course, there are the rules for absentee ballots. You pretty much have to prove you will be out of town on election day.
But what it comes down to is to VOTE, DAMMIT!! All you porch dwellers out there, ya hear?

Not alone, Mageen! – VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!! So the “citizen vigilantes” are suiting up, trying to remember how to load and fire their assault weapons, and headin’ on down to “help” the troops protect us all from the Alien Invasion…
Ah, yes, after walking a thousand or so miles, homeless, with infants and children in tow, they are certainly bound to be a formidable force…
And, glory be, GOP goobernatorial candidate Kemp in GA has just “discovered” – and on the Lord’s Day, no less – that there is a new “investigation” about some internet activity on the part of the Democrats…
Tomorrow’s Headline from the Office of the Georgia Attorney General (coincidentally enough, that same candidate Kemp): DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE ABRAMS ROLLS TOILET PAPER THE WRONG WAY!
And, on Tuesday, we can probably expect something like: ABRAMS ADMITS SHE DOES NOT FLOSS REGULARLY!
Sigh…

Homophobic bullshit does not help you make your points. To me, you sound very similar to the Trump folks, denigration of others, sexuality and gender based slurs of one’s enemies. Graham is a lying gasbag. The authors of this piece employ creepy verbiage of the bullying kind. Needlessly hurtful and bigoted. The authors should aim at Graham and his politics.
I wonder how Mags and Helen would feel if I ripped into Susan Collins not about policy but about her looks, age, mannerisms, gender and odd way of speaking? Collins made a horrific choice but decent people will criticize that choice and abstain from trading in slurs and stereotypes. The indecent people do otherwise.
It’s time to stop assuming you know it all and start learning what you don’t know. If not now, when?

I have to wonder when are women going to start believing other women. When are we going to bring our voices to the front in relation to owning ourselves. I am just so disgusted by this whole mess the ‘conservative patriots’ have gotten us into. As well as a DNC that was not what we needed, either.

Hi Mageen,
He does not respect women, never have. It is unfortunate that many women failed to see it and voted for him regardless. Had he displayed other qualities other than being rude to his opponents, maybe that would have overruled this lack of regards for women. But he does not and I just can’t fathom the attraction other than some of us being attracted to fake machismo. Hopefully some of these wormen have woken up and are seeing what I am seeing and will vote this November for worthy candidates.

Thanks for the post Helen. You have been missed. I know it is hard for people who have not been reading your blog for a long time to not understand your humor. I know for a fact that you have stood in defense of gay rights in several of your blogposts. I am not worried about you all of a sudden turning into an intolerant hater as far as gay rights go.
It now looks like it is a done deal, we are soon to have a new supreme court judge. How sad for this country that we should get somebody with no character, who can’t own up to youthful mistakes while at the same time owning up to his biases, which make him unsuited for the position he was seeking. Maturity or common sense in adolescence are usually in short supply. Of course there are always exceptions. However, I so wanted judge Kavanaugh to own up to what he did to Dr. Ford and ask for forgiveness. I am sure Dr. Ford would have tended an olive branch. Instead, she got short shafted, right alongside the rest of us, who have to deal with somebody we can’t trust on the bench. I don’t think judge Kavanaugh did himself a great favor. A shadow will always follow him. Does he not realize that? I would not want to live with something like that hanging over me for the rest of my life. But, each to his or her own.
The GOP has become a very arrogant institution, giving even God almighty the middle finger, if you asked me. Not giving judge Garland a hearing was the height of arrogance and conceited behavior. The party of christians did not see anything wrong with the way Congress acted then. To see the way senator Graham came down on the other side the way he did last week was the height of hypocritical behavior. There was cause for concern and he did not seem to care. How sad is that?

As for parents preparing a daughter to defend herself before going off to college, try this. Start early such as in elementary school with karate. My daughter and son in law did this with their firstborn, my grand-daughter. By the time she graduated high school she had run through a number of colored belts AND taken up fencing. Thats kind of sword fighting with a weapon called an epee. She had a state ranking with that one. She now goes through her college experience clear eyed and confident and get this – respected.

Margaret & Helen: I am very sad about your post about Lindsey Graham — it is beneath you. I am a rabid liberal, with Graham at the top of my list of GOPers I wish I could disappear with my magic wand. BUT your calling him a wannabee First Lady, an actress, etc. — you know what? If he is gay, something only his most intimate friends would know, so what? I am totally against hatred, discrimination, lack of integrity and other things, but if he is gay, I repeat, so what? We possibly could add hypocrisy to his list of sins, or maybe he is scared to come out of that closet/sanctuary. Your article was great enough to stand tall on its own merits: women being victims and not being heard. But slam possible gays with the same ball bat? It’s wrong, and there is enough truth to criticize this man.Don’t stoop to Republican level, please!

First, Dr. Ford was in high school.
Second, let’s assume that her parents had taught her how to pack heat, got her a concealed weapon’s permit, and signed her up for a (sic) NRA card.
Please, take us through the 1982 event had she been “packing heat” (I KNOW you love that expression).
She was wearing a bathing suit under her clothing (probably jeans and a shirt?) and was on her way upstairs to use the bathroom.
Two males grab her. What next? Please. What does Dr. Ford do? What do Kavanaugh and Judge do?
Or…does she just pull out her NRA card to intimidate them?

As an Independent and former Republican voter, we need to get to the bottom of this and not rush into a vote. This is a lifetime appointment and we need to fully vet him, even if he was nominated by the Pope.
I found Senator Graham to be very disappointing in his faux anger. I was also disappointed in Kavanaugh’s attacking style accusing Democrats and specifically the Clintons. The attacking style is straight out of the accused sexual assailant playbook – deny aggressively. When one name calls and blames others, that is an open invitation to dig deeper. In contrast, I found Ford to be very believable.
It is now being proven that Kavanaugh was not forthcoming to the Senators. That means he lied recently and not 35 years ago. There is too much damaging information in Mark Judge’s book, which should give us pause. While we are at it, Grassley as chair should have admonished Kavanaugh for his flippant attitude toward Senators. He should have simply said, Judge Kavanaugh, you are the one being questioned, not the Senators, so please answer the questions.
I realize we all did stupid things in high school and college, but sexual assault, sexual harassment and possibly gang rape are unusual and crimes. We cannot allow a sexual assailant to be on the Supreme Court. We already have an accused sexual harasser on there and the man who nominated Kavanaugh as admitted in at least three interviews, he has sexually assaulted and harassed numerous women – this is before many came forward and accused him.

Margaret and Helen were playing with words when they pair the two men; Trump might want to grab Graham, the pussy (a very hetero thing to do, right?).. Merriam Webster defines pussy in this, context, as “a weak or cowardly man or boy.”

Those two men sounded exactly the same! No control over their emotions and a feeling of ruling over people. That man does not belong on any court in the US of America. As far as the teasing of Graham for being gay goes, I subscribe to the standard Princess Sparkle Pony used when teasing Aaron Shock for his over-the-top gayness: He was in a position of power and used it to hurt other LGBT people, so he was fair game.
Lindsey wants to be AG.
Trump wants to fire his current AG.
Lindsey decided that Rapey McRaperson wasn’t the only one with a job interview that day.
They both need to be run out of government on a rail.

I have to comment on Lindsay Graham’s behavior and being called out for being gay….. well, you know in the south that he probably won’t be re-elected if he comes out of that closet. But, the power he perceives he has, is more important to him than his human authenticity. Most people don’t really care if he’s gay according to most from all over the place that I have been reading…but what they do care about is his treatment of other people. In his dramatic outburst on Thursday (where he essentially outed himself ) his words were detrimental to all women. Get that part, his words were demeaning to ALL women….He denounced the proceedings to be essentially lies and detrimental to Kavanaugh. So, if he wants to live quietly in his little closet, then he needs, at the very least NOT TO DEMEAN WOMEN and the rest of the human race. As women, we expect at the very least to be shown fairness, to be heard and to be treated humanely. Lindsay Grahams words were to the contrary.
So, the time comes that when a load-of-crap is aimed at us we have to aim right back. We always take the high road, we rarely fight back.If we don’t our rights will continue to be demolished, one by one. The time has come to fire away….. Lindsay has trashed us, so he gets it right back whatever it takes. In past times I would have said to just ignore his prissiness or gayness, …. but you fight with whatever it takes to hopefully stop him and allow women to have the same human rights as men.

Barbara J. Black has a problem with simple math. “In the last 20 years we have had Democrats as President for 16 of those years. ” Since 1998, the numbers have been an easily-understood 50/50 split: Bill Clinton for the first 2 years, followed by Bush the Lesser for 8, then Obama for 8, and the current Occupant of the Oval Office until now.
But that’s par for the course for her kind of folks, isn’t it? They think a loss by 3 million votes is a “landslide”.
I’m not too keen on your characterization of Sen. Graham either. I have zero respect for him, and he’s probably not in the running for a Manly Macho Man award, but still, not okay. You can do better.

I feel like I did in 1969. Same thing over and over again. Maybe somewhat better for jobs but for women the glass ceiling doesn’t really break.

Barbara J. Black’s comment demonstrates the usual GOTeabircher use of tu quoque, as though it’s defense instead of a deflection. If it weren’t so commonplace, I’d be laughing.
Or crying … because Stockholm Syndrome is such an ugly thing to witness.

I watched the spectacle. Dr. Ford accused Mr. Kavanaugh of assault with perhaps, attempted but unsuccessful rape. One of his defenses is that he was a virgin through high school. Interesting. He could still count himself a virgin since he never managed to complete his alleged act. Not much of a defense.

What a load of crap! You are blaming Republicans for the sexual imbalance in government. In the last 20 years we have had Democrats as President for 16 of those years. So if there is blame to be placed about how few women are in Congress now, Democrats must share some of that blame.
Now let”s talk about how Democrats deal with sexual transgression’s perpetrated by Democrats. How about John Kennedy”s multiple sexual pecadillos, then we have Teddy Kennedy and Chappaquidick, and then there is the king of elected sexual miscreants, Bill Clinton. Most recently we have new allegations that Diane Feinstein hushed up the reported sexual assault on a minor by one of her major financial backers.
Let’s be honest. Democrats stand up for women and pursue reports of sexual misconduct only when it suits their agenda. And God help the man or woman who reports they have been sexually assaulted…if it doesn’t help the current Democrat party agenda it is not pursued or worse yet, the report is hushed up and ignored.
Your writing may be clever, humorous and mocking but it ignores very well documented facts when it comes to how Democrats deal with sexual misconduct among their ranks.

Agree with all with the exception of your calling Graham a girl. First, calling him a girl is insulting to we women, second, his sexuality has nothing to do with anything and is demeaning to you and me and him. I love your columns, but do object to this uncalled for slam.

I love your writing and how you nail it every single time. However, I object to your characterizations of Lindsey Graham. Was he completely unhinged? Yes, absolutely . . . but his sexuality has nothing to do with it. Just as women want to be respected for who they are, LGBT people want and deserve the same respect. Whether he’s gay or not has no impact on the appropriateness of his behavior—it was abhorrent and unacceptable. Coming out is a personal private decision and if he is gay he will come out or not when he wants to. I don’t admire him in the least because he’s a jerk . . . not because he may be gay.

Love your commentaries. Its a wonder how little we know about politics and about specific candidates. It’s as if voting-in minorities and/or women will conclusively make it better. But I would welcome changes in any form. As a senior, I suggest Younger/progressive types as well. Lets find more room for thinkers and changers. Brave hearts.

That calendar? Any kid who was grounded as often as his indicates ain’t the litttle goody two shoes he is claiming to be. Republicans may be inching toward a less misogynistic view. They seem to have changed from”she is obviously lying” to “she is credible” and even a few admit “she makes a good point.” But until they get past the “but it doesn’t matter” or “but I am not changing my decision”, they have that one final big step to take.
They had better hope their supporters only have Kavanaugh’s retention span rather than Ford’s.

I don’t care for innuendo regarding Graham’s sexual orientation … we have plenty to poke fun at with Graham without going there. After all, we’re fighting for less of that, aren’t we?
We criticize conservatives as hypocrites for wanting government off their backs except when they agree with a certain intrusive law such as DOMA. Let’s look in the mirror.

Well, except for the Tennessee senate. The only thing worse than an old white Republican man is a middle-aged white Republican woman. Tennesseans, vote for the old white guy in this case. Phil Bredesen has his priorities straight.

As an old white man I am thoroughly embarrassed by all those other old white men in positions of power and a lot who aren’t. Crybaby Kavanaugh is just another privileged white frat boy who thinks he deserves the world on a platter. He and his ilk need a big disappointment in their lives and I really hope we can give them one in November because doing what REALLY needs to be done is illegal. I hope every decent human being in the country does the right thing. Kick these fuckers out now!

You are so very right! Only one small quibble: there is no innocent until proven guilty in a job interview. Now, if Maryland decided to prosecute, that would be how they’d have to approach it. But, since BK (Beer King? Brett Kavanaugh) is merely seeking what is essentially a promotion, there is no obligation for us to treat him as innocent until proven guilty. We just have to avoid actually slandering him. Seems he’s done an excellent job of that on his own.

It’s been too long. So happy to finally hear from you and I couldn’t agree more. I was beginning to worry that Kavanaugh was going to have a complete meltdown while testifying. Judicial temperament, I don’t think so! If we didn’t learn anything else from the hearings we now know that he really likes beer! Dr. Ford on the other hand was a perfect example of grace under pressure. Maybe she should be nominated for the court.
