You know what’s really dispectful to the American flag?  A Confederate flag. #TakeAKnee

Margaret, last week six football players knelt during the national anthem.  This week it was 200.  And just like Colin Kaepernick, they weren’t making a statement about the flag.  I swear this president is so stupid, he couldn’t find his ass if both hands were in his back pockets.

Lord help me, but I’ve taken a knee and I don’t want to get up.  Maybe I can’t get up.  I’m not sure which.  Three and a half million American citizens are in crisis in Puerto Rico, North Korea is threatening Armageddon, Russia used Facebook to influence our elections, Nazis are running over young women, Congress wants to take healthcare away from poor people… and our president has nothing better to do except name calling to get a cheer at his Klan rally.

As the widow of a veteran, I have no issue with any player taking a knee to protest during the national anthem. He has every bit as much right to do that as Donald Trump had to say that McCain wasn’t a war hero because he had been captured. Protecting that right is what my husband and McCain fought for. And all those Trump supporters calling for a football boycott lost their moral high ground when they put that man in the Oval Office.

A black football player peacefully protests well-documented inequalities that exist within out legal system and a bunch of crackers in Alabama cheer when the President calls him a son-of a-bitch. Are we really surprised? After all, those same hillbillies had no problem when the President called a bunch of protesting Nazis fine people. If we should be outraged about anything, it’s that we have a President who seems to be more comfortable in a white hood than the White House.

The “sons-of-bitches” in question were protesting social inequalities. The fact that Trump and his supporters equate that to protesting America is telling if you ask me. But what is even more telling is how Trump insults the players’ mothers rather than the player.

You know what’s really disrespectful to the American Flag and the men and women who fought to defend it?  The Confederate flag.  I mean it.  Really.

  1. Reader, right on! It is becoming more well known that Key owned slaves and had no compassion for escaped slaves who signed up to fight with the Brits. Hence, that one miserable part of the anthem. Not surprised though that he chose an old drinking song for the melody. Where else did “gentlemen” of the time spend their free hours? At the local pub, of course! Have heard the argument for making one of the other more we’ll known songs the anthem. Essentially, this move runs into the opinion that they are too “girly” for a country that apparently to some people runs on only one chromosome, the Y.

  2. I wish America the Beautiful was the anthem. It’s a much nicer song and it doesn’t have the problematic or inaccurate history or lyrical context attached to it. The racism is bad enough, both of the lyrics, the writer, and the country that it represents, but our anthem is set to the melody of an English drinking song — and it’s about a war (1812) that we lost to England (in what later became Canada)! Why stand for the historical equivalent of 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall? Or “Country Joe’s Think I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag,” which is also about a war that we didn’t “win”? Americans don’t know their history and they don’t want to know. We also can’t admit that we ever “lose” anything, least of all wars. James Loewen and Howard Zinn should be required reading. But good luck in making Americans do anything, let alone (horror of horrors) read a book…

  3. Porch dwellers, good morning! I have been getting questions from friends and family alike about the latest mortal wound to the ACA by the Draft Dodger In Chief. The reality – not tRump’s world – is rather different. Yes, some time ago a federal judge whacked out the federal subsidies but his whacking went ignored by the paper pushers for some time. tRump took advantage of that judicial decision BUT – and thats a big but – the insurance industry had been functioning as if there never was a judicial decision and are likely to remain doing so until somehow shut down. When those subsidies go, premium costs will sky-rocket for both the poor and the qualifying “middle class”. Several state attorneys general are suing and you can bet your britches the insurance industry will as well! I am also betting that there is another federal judge somewhere who will put a stay on what tRump has tried to do. There will be the usual psychotic screaming from the WH as a result. Being a total egotist, he will never ever learn how to play well with others such as Congress. I think what he resents most about the job is that it is not the Absolute Monarchy he always envisioned. Tsk! poor baby!

  7. This is a very good post. I believe people like Trump think kneeling at the flag means hating America or disrespecting the flag because they KNOW what people are kneeling for. They KNOW they’re kneeling for change and racial equality, but they don’t want to change that because it would mean they will lose power and it threatens their system. The more people who speak out against their oppressive system, the more their power is threatened. And as much as people say racism is “in the past”, I’m surprised they still fly their Confederate flag around. They know what that flag means, too.

  9. Desk jockeys! LOL Mageen! Those are the words I have been searching for all these years. I have had to live with some of their contradictory handy work in my professional life myself. I am always telling the people that some of these stories in contradiction affect on a daily basis that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. Thus the desk jockeys would make a pronouncement in one paragraph while negating it two paragraphs down. You sure made my day Mageen!

  10. Easier, I wish I could tell you that the 2015 Waters of the US Rule would help somebody but I don’t think so, no matter how many politicians gibber their jabber about it. The Rule is pure punishment to read. That alone should tell you something. It is so contradictory that I think it sets a new record for contradictions. Consequently, it is impossible as a law for anyone to follow. It seems that there were people writing various parts who knew nothing about, oh, say, farming as an example. Given that, these writers may well have no first hand knowledge of any other sectors of the economy and how what they write will impact them. Yup. Desk jockeys. Precious few of them ever get out of the office and those that do, again, are not versed in what they are actually looking at out in the field. This only promotes a deep ongoing distrust of outfits like the EPA which, in the past, have actually achieved some good stuff as shown in the original Clean Water Act.

  11. Thanks Mageen! I am just a little baffled by how shortsighted this administration is, whatever it is that they are working to repeal. I think I heard they either are working on repealing some of the more stringent emission standards implemented by the Obama administration. According to the news, Trump and his team are repealing it to help the coal industry.

  12. Easier, I also miss Kennedy and Obama. They were actual grown-ups with a beautiful vision for this country. Could I cut in here on the EPA? The original Clean Water Act remains. The latest brouhaha is over some additional writing in 2015 about navigable waters. You know, the kind of waters that float a canoe – or even bigger – and are always in existance rather than periodically dried up.

  13. As I was watching TV tonight, President Kennedy’s voice came on and he was talking about satellites that would be sent into space to help with weather predictions. And then it hit me. We had President Kennedy dreaming of sending humans to the moon, hoping that we could conquer space and use it to make life better here on earth. We had President Obama hoping and trying to give healthcare to all American, passing the Clean Air Act that got repealed today by the sitting president. And how does this one inspire us? He wants to build a wall that separate humans from one another. and that would be his biggest accomplishment if he should do so. Hope springs eternal and I hope we get back to hoping for all of humanity. Right now, I see how far America has strayed from its ideals. We have a president who is fighting with everybody, not inspiring anybody, unless the bodies he inspires are full of hate, just like he is. Just wanted to get this off my chest.

  14. Pamela, all that pre-play stuff is rather recent. It use to be that the teams simply came out on the field, flipped a coin, and then played football. Now it has morphed into something else that is essentially very manipulative. It seems there was a transfer of $$ between the football teams and the DOD concerning a color guard, national anthem, etc. As yourself: did all this pre-play stuff suddenly appear during the Viet Nam war? And why?

  16. Porch dwellers, I live about 1.5 hours away from Charlottesville, VA. I know there were a lot of confederate flags shown there lately but there was also another: the Nazi party flag. You know, the flag of the those other “good folks” that were part of the Nazi demonstration that ended with one innocent woman murdered by a deliberately speeding car and two state patrol officers killed when their observer copter crashed. It seems there has been some sort of marriage, satanic in nature, between the confeds and the Nazi party in this country. And as bad as it was before this happened, it is now geometrically even worse. And Potus45 had the gall to give the Nazis a pass! Which, in my book, made them feel comfortable about making another appearance with their bleeping tiki torches in C-ville again the other night! A somewhat smaller bunch of Nazis. A definitely more organized police presence. Fortunately, not a peep out of the White House about this. Without the vocal support of their number one fan, there is a possibility that the Nazis will dribble away to wherever they came from. And freeze in lace forever. I hope, I hope, I hope!

Korea, etc., etc. To think that Trump respects the flag and the anthem is a complete joke. His own DEA head just resigned because he believes Trump does not respect the rule of law. We have to admit that we have a morally bankrupt and mentally unstable man in the highest office of the land. This is a shame and disgrace that will be hard to come back from for many, many years. NFL players have every right in the world to silently protest police brutality and draw attention to the issue. We do not pledge to honor a piece of cloth or a song, we pledge to honor the rights we are granted in our constitution.

  28. Kelly – taking a knee is common in the lexicon of sports. Its the same as the military at ease. It means that the coach or the sarge or whoever has something to say. This time around its the team members/or the grunts who have something to say.

What in the world are you talking about?
You disagree with Helen because you think the kneeling is for a whole bunch of things , the people who kneeled say it is for something specific and the doofus Pres makes it about something entirely different but somehow someone ( the kneelers?) didn’t speak up or some damn thing so the kneelers knelt on all of us? And the doof won?
    Crimenently.
Let’s get real- we have always been divided. Always.
Sometimes we get it together enough to look past differences and find common ground, sometimes we don’t. This Pres hasn’t divided us, he’s just amplified some of the nastier sides of our divisions.
People have been peeing themselves over reputed “disrespect”for the flag for a long time- the doof tapped into that along with his horsepunky Apprentice routine about fire the SoB.- at best off the cuff, ill considered remarks by someone whose job theoretically includes encouraging unity.
But ya know? He slapped Puerto Rico right in the face shortly thereafter, huffed and puffed about N Korea and generally just did the same kind of asshatty stuff his cracks about the NFL players was.
Nothing new, no new losses, no new divisions. No.
And you know what? You are completely wrong with your whatever it was about denying this is about racism.
    ‘Nother argument, ‘nother day.

  37. Kelly – I’m sorry, but your entire post makes no sense. It’s like saying the way to exercise our constitutional rights is to not exercise them. Frankly, I think taking one knee is quite a respectful, non-violent way of expressing a protest. You are aware that there is a Supreme Court case that says we are not even required to make the pledge of allegiance. This falls into the same category. Trump is the one who has disrespected the flag and the Constitution.

When you kneel, you are also kneeling for Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr, Harvey Milk, and every one that also was a part of the civil rights movement. You are kneeling for all the veterans and those that fought in our wars..black and white alike. You are kneeling for all scientists, doctors, explorers, inventors, that made miraculous strides to save lives and improve quality of life. You are kneeling for my family who struggled as immigrants to make a better life for future generations. If you can’t stand for all of US..then I can’t stand for you either. There is more of us as a whole then just Trump and Racism. I did not vote for Trump nor while I support him however I believe he just won this one. Why? Because once again he succeeded in dividing America. Why didn’t they raise their voices? Why didn’t they take a stand? Not everyone supports Trump, the confederate flag, racism…when they knelt, they knelt on ALL of us.

  69. I’ve been taking notes. Whenever Trump is in real trouble he starts an attack, usually on First Amendment rights, something so well documented it will never be overturned by any Supreme or lower court.
    11/16 Trump U settlement = remarks about Hamilton cast disrespecting VP elect;
1/17 women’s march = “alternative facts”; lying press
9/2/17 Charlottesville Nazis = attacks on press for not actively saving people from Hurricane Harvey; lying press
9/24/17 Russia, Jr, Kushner (Russia and private server) = NFL & NBA attacks.

Who else has noticed? Every time he’s about to take a big hit, he deflects the issue. He’s not trying to resolve the issues he’s bringing up. He’s a only provocateur; he’s a very good one, too. It’s the only thing he does well. We can also HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS ACTIONS as well as these spiteful words. But we can’t do it by letting 45 lead us around by the nose. Hit him back with truth about HIS ACTIONS.

Of course we need to discuss, apologize, and change our continuing behaviors that incited the kneeling protest. Have serious discussions about racial bias, a SEPARATE issue from Trump’s Russia connections. We can change our behaviors without him and his hateful minority.
