FEMA Director scores big in prime time and Trump sells asshats for $40. In other news, Obama wasn’t president during Katrina. #Harvey

From Helen:

Margaret, that man is so stupid if he threw himself on the ground he would miss. And in that ridiculous hat he looks like something the dog is hiding under the porch. Honestly honey, I just don’t like him. He makes my ass itch every time he opens his mouth.

At the same time thousands in Brazoria County were being told literally to get out now because a levee had been breached, Trump was declaring job well done and commenting on the size of the crowd that showed up to hear him talk. My God that man thinks the sun comes up just to hear him crow.  At one point he actually marveled about how famous the FEMA director was becoming on TV as if FEMA Director Brock Long should be paying attention to his Neilson ratings.

Look, I don’t care what shoes Melania was wearing and I don’t care that Trump didn’t do any photo shots with victims. I don’t even care that he’s selling that USA hat he was wearing for $40 dollars on his own website. Ok. Maybe I care a little bit about that. I mean how shameful is this man? I’ll give $45 to shove it up his ass. But I digress…. What I do care about is our president has the vocabulary of a third grader and the empathy of a tree stump.

While in Texas, Trump actually said this about Harvey. “It sounds like such an innocent name. … But it’s not innocent. It’s not innocent.” For the love of God what the hell does that even mean?  Is he going to pardon it now? It’s a hurricane not a Jimmy Stewart movie. I guess going forward all Hurricanes should have Latino names so we can be certain they are bad hombres. Hurricane Carla, now she was a real bitch…

Please tell me I wasn’t the only one screaming at the television today.

But you know what is most telling about this whole situation? It’s the number of Trump supporters who were bitching to me on the internet that “at least Trump showed up because Obama was playing golf during Katrina.” Hey asshats, Obama wasn’t the president during Katrina. Bush was. And for the record, then Senator Obama volunteered in Louisiana during Katrina.

Excuse me but I need to digress again…

Listen up Republicans of all shapes, sizes and limited educational backgrounds. Obama gave you expanded access to healthcare while turning around the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression. Trump has given you accolades for Nazis and ten new coal mining jobs. Pull your goddamn heads out of your asses and think about that.

And to the idiot who showed a picture of Michelle Obama supposedly shopping three days after Katrina… oh Lord give me strength… She wasn’t the First Lady then and that picture you’re showing everyone is Condoleezza Rice not Michelle Obama.  Please. Before I die. Please. I want to meet one member of Trump’s base who doesn’t have a white sheet and hood hanging in the closet. Just one.

Now. What was I talking about again?  Oh yes…

My prayers go out to everyone affected by this storm. I have no doubt that when the rains finally stop, Texas will recover thanks in large part to the hard work of first responders and government officials both local and national. I hold out hope that we learned from past mistakes and will handle this disaster better than Katrina. I’m far from a diplomat. I’m old, cranky and prone to cusswords.  But even I am smart enough to know you don’t celebrate victory while an entire city is under water and it’s still raining.

And to add insult to injury, I just read that ten days before Hurricane Harvey made landfall, President Trump signed an executive order eliminating an Obama-era rule called the federal flood risk management standard. What might you ask is that? It was a rule that asked agencies to account for climate change projections when they approved spending on infrastructure projects. Yep. That rule is now gone. Meaning we’ll all be here again long after that fool is gone.

The man is deplorable. I mean it. Really.

From Margaret:

The only thing presidential about that visit was the plane.

  1. OK. I’m confoosed. Trump insured Mar A Lago with the federal flood insurance program which is actually meant for modest home owners with limited funds. Cannot figure out why he did not go with a major private insurer. Could they have possibly turned him down? Maybe he didn’t want to cough up the paperwork which would include a P & L statement and anything that remotely resembled any part of a tax return. Or he made the federal flood insurance program an offer they couldn’t refuse, you know like some mafia capo. This made me ask my own home insurer about flood insurance even thought I don’t live in a flood plain. But local storm sewers do break down in mad hurricanes and everything backs up into the basement. If any of the porch dwellers out there can unfused me on this issue, go right ahead!

  2. Porch dwellers, there are at least two other storms out there riding Irma’s tail. One of them is now in the Gulf and may hit the southeast coast of Texas and the shoreline of Louisiana – like they need it!!! Whoever lives in Florida, Texas and Louisiana and loves eating pie, I hope you all stay safe. I was reading that Richard Branson of the Virgin Airlines hid out in the wine cellar on his private island when Irma hit. I’m thinking he was well provided for!

I hope this does not become normal!

  7. Hi Bruce,
I think we have a misunderstanding. My comment was made in response to a post by a person calling herself Maggs asserting that President Obama ignored flooding in Nashville. This is factually wrong and it is a notion spread at the time by right wing bloggers. Below is a statement by the Mayor of Nashville put out at the time of the flooding. These are the “facts” I was telling Maggs to check.

“I have to say that FEMA and the White House have been absolutely supportive. Very quickly FEMA was on the ground here before the raindrops started falling. … The President was on the phone to me before the sun came up practically on Monday morning. Slightly after it came up, other people from the White House had called and checked in with us and helped. … I’ve never seen this kind of a response to things that have happened. We’ve had our share of tornadoes and those kinds of things. … I’m very, very pleased with the response we’ve gotten from the administration.” [Whitehouse.gov 5/6/10]

P.S. All respect to Margaret and Helen
    P.P.S.– thanks Alaskapi

How did we ever get here? I can’t help but think we have let down past generations who made this country strong. It really is too much to handle. I’m not really sure how to explain this to my children. I’ve never felt such shame in my life. So very sad.

  12. Does anyone ever ask why isn’t there more effort made to limit people living on the coast where hurricanes can hit them? If you live on the coast, wouldn’t it be smarter to be on a hill, far away from the water. Same question for those living on rivers which flood, etc. If you put your house in a flood plain, you are really taking a risk that someday your gonna get smacked with a flood. So why do it?

Well, now you got your great white hope. Let him make this already great country called America great again! Let him be the beacon on the shining hill that promotes these ideals that all of the inhabitants of this great country are created equal (only their economic circumstances differ), are deserving of making good wages for a good day’s work, and are deserving of good health care when sick. This country has the means to do that if we all would understand that the greater good start with me and my neighbor. If my neighbor is okay, I am okay. That would be a president I approve of, whether progressive or not. Does your current president promote these ideals?

People may have gotten President Obama/Katrina time line mixed up bc of the events that took place within the first couple of months of his Presidency…ie:The floods in Tennesee, Grand Ole Oprey got wiped out. The President was basically a no show. Just ask the people of Nashville. They rebuilt their town & theatres without any help or mention from the Oval Office. OH AND THEN THERE WAS THE BP OIL SPILL. Democrats were crying for his help. Carvelld was literally crying with the rest of the officials of the Gulf…Where are you Mr. President. So there might be some confusion..indeed

  48. Betty, my husband of 44 years passed away in 2012 from cancer. The aftermath was a kind of a roller coaster emotionally and I learned that when I had to have a good honking cry, just go to my room and do it. Getting rid of the emotional overload is exceptionally important. Over time things have straightened out. Looking back on it I can’t believe all the work that was left for me to do as the surviving spouse on top of my job and my family. and observing holidays. Those things kept me rolling. I did keep the few picture of him that I had around the house. I did not join a widows counseling group that was offered at church. I discovered that so many of these groups, as well meaning as they are, use the 12 steps much more suited to people dealing with terminal illness. Thats not me. Widowhood is not a terminal illness. Every day in some even minuscule way is better than the previous one even when the weather is unthinkably bad, household repairs have to be made, or I am under the weather, each day is a hairs breadth better than the previous one. Strong, resilient people also have a crying time when necessary. Just keep on keeping on. Humans are good at that. Good luck to you.

Dad was so good at this explanation that it saved me from dating a lot of cads and creeps. It got so thanks to Dad that I was able to smell them coming and was able to avoid them. Now get this. I can and do respect the idea of The President of the United States and the constitutional powers – and responsibilities – that come with the job but I sure do draw the line at respecting charicatures. 78. About Trump or anyone like him and his “performance” in Texas specifically and in general:
There is a psychological concept called the near enemy. That sounds bad right from the start, but don’t worry. Near enemy means that there are two emotions that look the same but are actually opposites. Basically one emotion parades as the other, is mistaken for the other, but one is healthy and the other one definitely not so much.

This stuff comes in threes: Attachment masquerades as Love, Pity as Compassion and Indifference as Equanimity.

Pity and compassion are the easiest to understand. Compassion involves empathy. The stricken person is seen as an equal. Pity doesn’t go that route. The pityer is into superiority and sees the stricken person as a lesser being. (See Trump or anyone like him) Compassion is a noble emotion and just about everyone claims to be full of it, but they are kidding themselves. It is actually pity they are feeling. Hence Pity is the enemy of compassion. It has no room for nobler emotions.

It is easy for someone to fool themselves into thinking they are experiencing compassion. (See Trump or anyone like him)

Love and attachment are usually symbolized as mother and child images. However, this pairing also includes friendships and any intimate relationship. Love wants the best for the other. Attachment takes hostages. Love sets people free. Attachment is clinging, stifling, manipulative, crippling, the antithesis of independence. Hostages aren’t allowed to escape and when they try it often ends badly. (See Trump’s “base”, the ones who refuse to own up even when he finally pushes one of the nuclear buttons)

Next is equanimity and indifference. This is the most corrosive pairing. Equanimity is translated as balance. When we are hit with something overwhelming we can certainly feel it strongly but we also have an ability to overcome it. We have all seen people who have been through hell and survive unbelievable grief and sorrow. Deep down inside most people there is a core. That’s where the equanimity is, the ability to accept things and move on. (Trumpites, are you listening?)

come back and talk- Maybe, just maybe, someone here will pay attention.
Ttil then, please do flounce off somewhere with your phony civility routine.

  104. Well said, Helen. I knew 45 was visiting here in Austin, but I don’t know that a whole lot of us cared. We were too busy caring for evacuees, raising money, and doing everything we could to help, while trying to dry out our own stuff…..although all the hot air coming out of Trump sure would have dried my office carpet.

  119. No thought that you, personally, are against “the poor and needy.” But when a government cuts off access to school lunches for children whose families can’t pay for them; is supported by people who “believe” that if you’re poor, it’s your own fault because you just didn’t try hard enough; or by pastors of “megachurches” who think that your favor with the Highest is recognized by your annual income… None of that sits well with me.

I really don’t think that those who object to this kind of thinking are “as bad” as those who support it. You might be surprised to know that I am a long-time supporter of an evangelical Christian group, the Sojourners, who believe that that serving the least of us is the highest expression of faith. (And I came of age in the sixties, full of protest against the Viet Nam war, as ecumenical as they come, and here I am.)

No; “hating” wrong is NOT the same as “hating” injustice. The worst “wrong,” IMHO, is believing that anyone is less human than I am, and treating them as such.

  121. gatodicima I hear these same old talking points over and over and over. I agree he needs to stop his personal attacks on twitter. I would love to take the account away. The difference in us is that I do not believe he is trying to destroy our country. I think a lot of his ideas are good. So goes the difference between a conservative and a liberal. This election the conservatives won. I just wish that he would not have to spend his precious time defending himself. I think he could really do some good. It is the Republicans turn to try to make or break this country as it was done in the last 8 years by the Democrats. And true it is your duty to object, it is just not your duty to interfere so nothing can be accomplished. I am sorry you think just because you dont agree with the other side, that side is out to destroy or corrupt.our country. We love it just as much as you do, just have different ideas.. That is why if would be great if the two sides would work together for the best interest of the people of this great country. No one and all right or wrong. Not even you.So sad.

  132. Jackie – again – it IS “personal,” dammit, in most part because Trump has no “policies” other than condemning anyone and anything he feels has insulted HIM. If you were on a plane, and a crash killed seventy percent of your fellow passengers, and it was revealed that the pilot wasn’t qualified/was drunk/fell asleep/or whatever, would you be “disgusted” when people blamed that pilot, in particular, for the wreckage – or would you feel that their doing so was being “disrespectful” of piloting overall…?

I certainly wouldn’t, nor would I for a nanosecond think it would be a good idea to let that pilot sit down in another cockpit, ever.

And, lest we forget, WHO, pray tell, has called more individuals – Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants, entertainers, women, TV anchors, public servants, reporters, presidential candidates, scientists, whoever, OFTEN SPECIFICALLY BY NAME, “loser,” “fake,” “worthless,” “thugs,”et cetera –more often than our Tweeter-In-Chief?

  134. Jackie – In my opinion, patriotic Americans love our country, and respect our system of government, and IT IS OUR DUTY AS CITIZENS to strongly object to anyone who attempts to destroy or corrupt that system, especially for the sole apparent purpose of personal glory and self-enrichment. In my seven-plus decades, I have seen no occupant of the Oval Office so publicly, heedlessly, and blatantly disparage just about every component of the American system: Our voting process is filled with corruption (not); Congressional process should be revised so “he” can get his way without their “interference”; the judicial system is rife with “activist” judges (even as he and his supporters do their damnedest to stack the SCOTUS with their favorites); government should have no role whatsoever in regulating corporate or financial activities, because they can “monitor” themselves (not so far); public opinion means nothing; our press and media – except for FOX – are “fake”; our intelligence agencies are incompetent; foreign interference in our elections never happened; and on and on and on… A college student, for example, who says even some of these things and, god forbid, maybe even “disrespects” our flag in any way, is instantly labelled a “commie,” “anti-American,” and worse.

This “president” has been – and continues to be – the best publicist imaginable for every anti-American government and/or terrorist group trying to recruit followers by trying to convince them that America is racist, corrupt, militaristic, and intolerant. It’s not “talk like this” from an outraged citizenry that is dividing the country; it’s “talk like this” from our own head of state that is – and the silence and/or support of those who know better and continue to let him do so without objection.

A foolish affair with an intern is certainly not “nothing,” nor is publicly lying about it repeatedly, but it absolutely cannot be considered equally as traitorous, destructive, and damaging to this country as just the first few months of this disastrous government have already been.

Agree with all you say & want to add that I’m most concerned that the media continues to focus on stupid things – Melania’s outfit, etc., which allows the important stuff, such as the rollback of the federal flood risk management standard to get swept aside. They’re playing right into his hand by letting the important stuff slide in favor of irrelevant crap.

  176. Hi, Nancy – Let me offer a thought on this issue, if I may. My concern is not primarily the IQ of voters, and I doubt any of us would like to see some sort of “intelligence approval” as a prerequisite of voting. And, as far as I can tell, there is no way anyone as disturbed as this “president” seems to be is ever going to see the “folly of his ways.” As such, he is the Perfect Patsy for anyone who wants to operate nefaariously behind closed doors – Congresspersons, wealthy would-be oligarchs, actual oligarchs, extremists of all stripes. The more we are distracted and appalled by Trumpty’s outrageous behavior, the less we focus on bills being passed, voting districts being gerrymandered, National Parks put up for sale, and so on, and so on… If he weren’t an incredibly useful “tool,” he would have been stopped long ago.

And, BTW, I do not exclude myself from endless tweeting and snarking about this BS myself! However, I TRY to remember that my best avenue for effecting any change is to remind every local politician – from dog catcher to senator – that my disgust at Cheeto’s behavior, and their silence and/or support of it, is going to cost THEM my vote. It’s endless, and it’s tedious, and often seems pointless. IT’S NOT! It was visible and strident public outrage that stopped the latest “Trumpcare” crap, not some “failure” on the parts of Ryan and McConnell. Remember that, and keep sloggin’ on. PERSIST!!! It’s the thing that terrifies them the most; that’s why they keep trying so hard to ignore it, say it doesn’t exist, or equate Black Lives Matter with the KKK.

And that’s why Margaret and Helen – and a porch full of people who just refuse to shut up, even though we’ve been “warned” – are so important!

  182. Dear Helen,

Thank you for your wisdom. Margaret’s observations are also appreciated. I have been struggling with a personal crisis since last November’s election. I considered myself an authentic bleeding-heart liberal, but now find myself adrift in an electoral identity loss. Bleeding hearts are always wanting to expand voting rights. That is one of the top five rules of bleeding-hearts, right? I am now very uncomfortable because I truly believe stupid people should not vote. Ever. They should suffer the same non-citizen status as convicted felons.

Not requesting you and Margaret should solve this dilemma. I will continue to wrestle with my (formerly) bleeding-heart conscience and continue reading and sharing your comforting words.
