Margaret, I watched that jackass in Cleveland and lost my voice. I saw a Presidential nominee paint a picture of an America I don’t know and have never known. I tried to respond but I couldn’t find the words. I watched his wife lie to a reporter saying that she had written every word of her speech. When she hadn’t, I watched the media say it wasn’t her fault. I tried to respond but couldn’t find the words. I listened to children who have known only life’s riches praise a father who had made his riches by cheating others. I tried to respond but I couldn’t find the words. I watched an audience shout down a Senator when he told them to vote their conscience. I tried to respond but I couldn’t find the words. I watched amazed as Trump got more popular rather than less and truly I couldn’t find the words. But last night, I watched a battle-worn President who had been unjustly treated and unfairly maligned rise above it all. I watched Barack Obama, my President, paint a different picture, a beautiful picture of hope, kindness, forgiveness and humility. And now I am going to respond because I have indeed found my words. Screw you, Mr. Trump. You better give your heart to Jesus because your butt is mine and I plan to kick your ass from the bottom floor to the top floor of Trump Tower and then down again. As I live and breathe, you will never be President. Never.
I have always said that even when I watch my P’s and Q’s, I can still spell bullshit. Eight years ago, Sarah Palin walked onto the world stage and American politics hit a new low. I saw a bitch and I called her a bitch. Trust me. She spewed hatred, fear and ignorance better than any hillbilly I had ever known. I have no regrets for calling her a bitch. Palin was a joke. Trump, however, is no joke. He is the real deal when it comes to divisive politics. Trump has an ego the size of my ass (and trust me when I tell you that is one yuuuuuuuuge ass). Everything he does is for selfish reasons, fueled by greed and motivated by power.
Salty language and a strong opinion don’t bother me. Saying what’s on your mind is usually a good thing. Usually. But what’s on Trump’s mind isn’t fit for human consumption. It’s just hatred, fear and plain old racism. He put together a carnival in Cleveland to make the case that America has become a horrible place that no longer has time for political correctness. But I am here to tell you that speaking your mind and being politically correct are not mutually exclusive. Political correctness is having the emotional intelligence and decency not to use language, evoke images or take actions that marginalize, offend or otherwise insult people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against. Kind of sounds like something Jesus would support if you ask me.
The America he described is not the America I know. In fact, it’s not the America anyone knows. The rest of us know an America of hard-working, compassionate people who no longer have time to hate and who don’t aspire to harass and humiliate their fellow countrymen. The America we know wants to end poverty, end war, educate our children and take care of our elderly. We welcome diversity because we are and always have been the world’s great melting pot. Our America has been and always will be great. Trump sees America as some ugly girl just waiting for him to take her to the prom. It’s bullshit and we all know it.
Trump takes offense that President Obama and Secretary Clinton don’t use the expression Extreme Islamic Terrorist, suggesting, I guess, that all Islamic people are terrorist but some are just more extreme. Funny. Whenever another old, white man blows up an abortion clinic, I don’t hear anyone calling him an Extreme Christian Terrorist. Why? Because you don’t attribute the bad actions of a few Christians to the entire Christian faith any more than you should attribute terrorism to the entire religion of Islam. You don’t, of course, unless you are trying to stir up a bunch of ignorant mouth breathers that have been drawn to the talk radio/Fox News/Sarah Palin/Michelle Bachman brand of Republicanism that is today’s Republican base. Trump’s America seems to be one filled with roaming bands of brown gypsies raping and pillaging at will. I guess the view from Trump Towers is somewhat skewed when you watch Fox News and listen to talk radio all day. To him, there is evil in anyone who doesn’t bow to his perceived greatness.
Trump is partly right. Evil is indeed alive and well in America. It’s just not as widespread as he would like to scare us into believing. It seems to be alive and well in about 4% of the population – roughly equal to the number of votes cast for Trump during the primaries. Coincidence? I think not. And funny enough, the worst of them all decided to travel to Cleveland last week.
Donald. You sir are no Reagan. You are no Kennedy. No Clinton. You are no Obama. You aren’t even a Bush. You are a self-aggrandizing, hatred-spewing, lying sack of shit. And yes, I realize that my name- calling is just as bad as yours. But I am not running for President. You are. So be a man and act like it. Sadly, I sincerely doubt you can.
The Republican Party, the party that likes to think it has a monopoly on God, family values and patriotism, owes America an enormous apology. Palin was bad enough, but Trump is inexcusable. I mean it. Really.

Thanks for the clarification! So, I think I get it… Iran gave us a bunch of money; we never delivered what they “bought.” And, at this point, we sure as hell weren’t going to give them any weapons, right? So we said, “Okay, how about we give you back your money? And we want those American citizens you’ve got, too.” And they agreed. Is that basically it?
Hardly a “ransom” situation, IMO, when you give back a buyer the money he paid you for something you never delivered, AND you get something else “valuable” from him, as well – at no “extra cost” to you.
So who looks like the “winner” here…? The buyer who shelled out his money and never got what he paid for, or the seller who returned the money, AND got a “bonus’ on top of it?
($400 million could have earned a nice bit of interest, too, while we were sitting on it…)

That $400 million was money Iran gave the U.S. for arms which we never delivered. To Donald Trump’s surprise, the U.S. made a “deal” which saved us money. It’s exhausting trying to get people on the right to just deal with reality. They would much prefer to disparage our president and our government. For some reason, that makes them feel better. Hi, Terri (and UAW, if you’re paying any attention) –
I think it’s been pretty firmly acknowledged that this particular chunk of money was part of an agreement that was made between the US and Iran well before the current administration was even elected. In other words, it was an outstanding debt on our part that we’d just not paid. (Not paying it was most likely to keep some “leverage” going around that.)
In other words, Iran did not suddenly ask for a “new” bunch of money from us here, which would have to be considered a demand for ransom. However, it seems that what we said, “Okay, now we’ll pay you what we owe you if we can make a deal,” and that’s quite different, IMO.
But… The bottom line is that, frankly, whether or not some “deal” must be called “ransom,” or “not ransom,” pales in significance next to the idea of what sort of person we are going to elect as our next POTUS. The choice seems to be between someone with vast experience in international politics, in making “deals,” including some which some people consider “shady,” and someone who knows absolutely nothing about international politics and maneuvering, who lies consistently, makes all kinds of empty promises and threats, and walks around happily being a loose cannon…
If He, Trump had made this very “deal,” he would be bragging ceaselessly about how cleverly he had worked “the system.” Someone with his business history of rip-offs and failures has a hell of a lot of nerve casting aspersions here. If, as he says, he knows “the system” better than anyone, he can hardly find this kind of thing “shocking.”
But, of course, the illusion of “nerve” is all he’s got to sell.

Oh, come on, UAW… If you worship polls, as He, Trump obviously does, then it should be clear that the only vessel that is sinking is the “SS GOP.” Please name me ONE single, just one, prominent Democrat who’s said he/she has decided to vote for what’s his name… Maybe I’ve missed something.
As for what’s a “ransom” and what isn’t, we can back and forth forever between those who say it was such, and those who maintain it was a long overdue payment on an agreement that was set up years before Obama was elected President. And, frankly, I hardly give a s**t about that.
What I care about is that it’s pretty clear that He, Trump knows almost NOTHING about any kind of international deal-making, and the history of his own business deal-making is a hell of a lot less “successful” than he says it is. If he’s so goddam proud of his triumphs, he’d get those tax returns out there ASAP, so everybody could stop pestering him about them.
But, no… He much prefers to keep any legitimate documentation under wraps, so he can just tell us what he wants to tell us.
Anyone who says, “Believe me” as often as he does is absolutely not to be believed…

Yes, listening to Donald Trump makes my head spin (and my stomach turn). He is capable of taking differing stands on the same issue in the course of a day. He cannot be allowed near the Oval Office, he is entirely unfit. I think people like Paul Ryan and Peter King, who continue to defend him, are doing themselves a disservice, but most of all it is a disservice to the country. We are seeing the true colors of many, many DC politicians. God help us.
P.S. It sounds as if you husband is coming around…..good news. Hope you’re well and enjoying a nice summer.

And my husband said, “The rats are right!”
They’re still rats, of course, but at least they won’t be drowned rats… This seems pretty applicable here, IMO.
What’s so bizarre about He, Trump is that he insists that every word out of his pinched little mouth-like orifice is “true” and critically important – until someone objects. THEN, of course, what he said isn’t “true,” and doesn’t mean anything. And we’re supposed to “believe him” when he says something, AND “believe him” when he later denies that he said it…
Is this crazy-making, or what? it certainly should be to everyone who isn’t crazy themselves…

Here’s the gist:
Grassley’s bill, in addition to ostensibly strengthening the National Criminal Instant Background Check System, would also tweak the laws regarding gun sales to individuals who have been involuntarily committed to psychiatric institutions and veterans who have been deemed incompetent to manage their own affairs. Everytown says Grassley’s proposal to allow involuntarily committed patients to buy guns as soon as their commitment orders have expired is dangerous. (Some critics believe the existing legal processes by which gun rights are restored to the involuntarily committed are already too weak; Grassley would eliminate those processes.) The group also says there are better existing proposals to deal with the veteran-competency issue.
Cornyn’s bill would require the government to prove within three days that a terror suspect “has committed, conspired to commit, attempted to commit, or will commit an act of terrorism,” a standard that amounts to proving in three days that someone has already committed or is imminently ready to commit a crime.

Hi, Roz – If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is the almost unimaginable damage that can be done by one megalomaniac encouraged, left unchained, and officially unacknowledged as such, by people who have done so for the basest of reasons: Their own fears, racism, greed, and lust for power.
Even if He, Trump drops out (with all the self-righteous indignation we can surely expect), there are no GOP candidates who have not already been indelibly stained by their “support” of him… Except, maybe, John Kasich, ironically enough.
And even if they do manage to pull someone even reasonably acceptable out of some hat, they have next to no organization, no “ground game,” no principles left, and almost nothing to work with…
In a certain sense, the GOP “asked for this.” I can only hope that the taking down of the entire party will not take down the rest of us with it.
I remember being in Germany in the 1980s, where my ex-husband was making a promotional film for BMW. The young people there were STILL trying to figure out what happened to their country that let Hitler come to power, and how so many warning signs could have been overlooked, for so long, by so many…
I don’t think we are making that mistake here. Some of these “voices” may make some of us uncomfortable, and many are not even in English, but they matter as much as the more familiar voices of measured reason. All are the voices of America.

Roz, I agree. The Dems’ best path to victory is having Trump as the candidate. When he loses, he will naturally claim the system is “rigged”, he was treated “unfairly” and he was “viciously attacked.” He is not a grown up, he cannot accept a failure, he will look to blame anybody and everybody. He is such a whiner. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a grown main whine and complain as much as he does. I just pray he will go away after the election. Personally I am sick to death of seeing him, hearing him and being forced to think about him.
Gato, I agree with your assessment about how Trump handles any adversity. The man is just pure id, there is no super ego at play with that man. I just don’t see him leaving the race. As for the rest of the possible GOP replacements if he did leave, those are pretty slim pickings. Their great hero, Paul Ryan, at this point looks like an impotent fool. A profile in courage he is not. JMHO.

‘What if’ Trump were to drop out? It sounds like a welcome scenario but ‘what then’?
Any Republican candidate on that primary debate stage presented a horrifying possibility… were they to become president. Paul Ryan is also being floated as a possible alternative. They’re all of the same ilk…championing economic deregulation and social regulation. At least Trump presents the stark reality of what a possible Repthuglican presidency would mean for this country. I welcome the Trump spectacle and fervently hope it will open the eyes and minds of enough voters! It seems to be the case as polls are reflecting a downward trend.

However (why do I so often start with that word?), I still think the chances of He, Trump’s quitting are fifty-fifty. (Actually, he apparently said a couple of months ago to some Sunday host that he’d quit if his poll numbers started to slide, because he’s “not a masochist.” Well, they certainly ARE sliding, but there’s no reason to believe he’d stick to this thought any more than he sticks to ANY of his “thoughts.”)
The thing is, IMO, that He, Trump accepts no “label” about himself unless he, himself has selected it. A hundred thousand people can call him a racist, but He, Trump is not a racist. Same with narcissist, misogynist, sociopath, and anything else. It just doesn’t count in his mind unless He, Trump decides it does – and that’s how it is with everything.
So, were he to drop out, the entire WORLD could call him a “loser,” but He, Trump wouldn’t believe it, because he didn’t pick it – and he never would. He could be bound hand and foot, slowly sinking in a vat of quicksand, and if someone said to him, “Hey! I think you’re sinking in that quicksand!”, he’d reply, “No, I’m not,” and he would BELIEVE IT.
So if he exits the race, it will be because He, Trump is “above” all those small-thinking losers, has “better things to do,” doesn’t have to endure all those “unfair attacks” and the “rigged system.” He won’t “quit”; he’ll just be too good to associate any longer with such a bunch of losers.
Nor would he EVER admit that he has neither the desire to, nor the capability of, actually do any “governing.” And probably the thought of having to BS his way through four years of risking the possibility of making it undeniably clear that such is the case, it just might make sense to him to get out now.
That way it’ll be his “choice,” not the choice of Congress, some impeachment panel, or that accursed “rigged system” that’s always out to treat him so unfairly… It could be the biggest “Sc**w All You Losers” of his life.
How could He, Trump resist…?

Agreed, Gato. Years and years ago the NR A was in the forefront of gun safety laws. But not now. Real sportspeople are now the ones demanding safety first, and high standards for members. True sports persons would never use an automatic weapon. They rely on skill won through practice and training. When my son began to learn to shoot, he went to a range and was told he had to join the NRA to become a member even though he didn’t want to. From that point on, I never liked NRA. How good can an organization be if they must increase membership through coercion ? Now it’s the bastion of right wing gun nuts who know nothing of sportsmanship. They only yell the loudest about ‘their right to bear arms’. Perhaps they should read the Second Amendment more closely.

Howdy, Tioophousia –
I live very close to Newtown, CT. There is a gun club literally across the street from our Community. They have open shooting several times a week, and their facilities are used for firearms training for police officers.
Shortly after that massacre, I screwed together my courage and went to the club to see what the members might have to say. I am in no way a “gun person,” so doing this was pretty scary to me. (Here’s this old hippie lady, going to a place where there were more guns than she’d ever seen in her entire life..!) They’d been accosted by reporters for days, many of whom were trying to “blame” the club for what happened.
They could not have been nicer. I was impressed with how well-regulated their shooting sessions were. They know every single person who’s been there, and keep detailed records of everyone’s activity at the range. They didn’t have much good to say about the NRA, by the way. Apparently the NRA comes in and offers to upgrade a club’s facilities, provide jackets and teeshirts, legal services, insurance policies, and all kinds of other support… But only if the members ALL agree to become “members” of the NRA. It’s not an option; either everyone signs up, or no goodies. This is how the NRA boosts its “membership.”
Even more interesting was their disdain for people who use military-style weapons. Their POV is that those are only for people who can’t shoot, and have no desire to learn real marksmanship. Their position is that if someone can’t properly handle a long gun, they’re pretty useless. Not a single word about “Second Amendment rights,” BTW. All in all, a very interesting experience for me.
I doubt that any of them would feel the need to take an AK-47 with them on their next trip to our local Walmart… And not a bit of camo-wear in sight…
BTW, just heard from a friend that he’d enrolled his pig (yes, an actual pig) in the NRA, and now “Franklin” is a full-fledged, card-carrying member.

Your comment was spot on. The only purpose for having an automatic or semiautomatic weapon is the mass killing of human beings. They must only be in the hands of the military trained in their use. Farmers and ranchers use long guns to protect livestock. They should have those weapons. Trump is engaging in a sophomoric “mine is bigger than yours” contest. Thank you, Cynthia, for expressing what is one of my concerns regarding assault weapons. I’m reminded of how Australia took all guns away from everyone except farmers and ranchers who needed them to protect their livestock from natural predators some time ago in the ’90’s. They haven’t had a mass killing since. My other concern is with the “Pro-Lifers” who are only concerned with getting babies born. What happens to the babies who aren’t wanted is not their concern. As a Christian I have a real problem with that. Any baby born should be loved and nurtured, educated and supported to the best of our ability. Otherwise we can’t condone denying abortion to anyone who isn’t up to the task.
Now I just hope that I can be happy once the election is over and Trump is dumped.

And as long as people like myself feel compelled to look more than once a day at “donald trump tweets,” he will thrive.
When I lived in NY, my subway train was once stopped because someone had fallen onto the tracks and been hit by the train. I thought I’d just go to the front car and take a look… A decision I will regret for the rest of my life.
As long as we are curious about the carnage from that kind of “train wreck,” and eager to see it, it will continue to be front and center.

Awww, UAW… It’s not that I don’t LIKE you, it’s just that so much of what you say He, Trump has been “accused of” are things that have come out of his own mouth. He just takes offense at the fact that people object to them.
In fact, he takes offense at even being asked a question, ever, about anything he says or does. He maintains that someone asking, publicly, if he’d ever read the Constitution is a “vicious attack.” (That’s like saying that someone’s asking, “What do you think of this weather?” is a “vicious attack” on one’s personal meteorological skills.)
As for releasing college transcripts, have we been treated to any of He, Trump’s? If so, I’ve missed it. And which do you think are more relevant to someone’s claims about how rich and how “successful” he is, and how qualified he is to “run this country like a business” – one’s college grade point average, or one’s tax returns…?
“Believe me” is not a very convincing justification for claims of being a great “deal maker.” Even the slightest corroboration from ANYONE with whom he had made one of these “great deals” would be – and those voices have been remarkably silent. (He, Trump may feel that he’s made a “great deal” when he’s paid a supplier thirty cents on the dollar of what he owes them, but most people would call that kind of “great deal” something quite different.)
When He, Trump has had “Trump University” investigated five or six times by endless Congressional “committees,” and the FBI, and has been exonerated of any wrong-doing every single time, then I might begin to believe he’s on the up and up with his claims.
And on that day I’m sure we’ll all be thrilled to see the flying pigs, too…

And by the way, why should Obama release his Harvard transcripts? He was the editor of the Law Review. You don’t get that distinction if you’re not an exemplary student. Where are Trump’s Wharton School transcripts? And where are Trump’s tax returns? We know he isn’t worth nearly as much as he claims, and that he probably doesn’t pay any income taxes. Is that okay with you? Do you mind that he cheated so many contractors and vendors and employees when he declared bankruptcy six times? Does it bother you when he invited the Russians to tamper in American politics? And do his daily lies bother you at all? Today it was a nonexistent video he claims to have seen. Yesterday it was a “real” purple heart given him by a vet, who specifically told him was a copy.

Greetings all porch dwellers. By now somebody might have had the following thought: is Trump suicidal? Look at the full pattern. Totally out of control. Totally out of touch with reality. Living in his own little world where only he can rightfully and righteously determine anything and everything. Nothing can hurt him. Not even if he put a gun to his head — and pulled the trigger. I had this hunch when he said that even if he walked down the street and shot somebody he would get away with it. Another words, he is god-like and nothing will happen to him. Sometimes a suicidal person will speak in metaphors, etc. And never listen to anyone else. He doesn’t need them no matter if they are saying good things about him. The only things that really matter are the distortions in his own head.

I found it interesting that He, Trump eagerly spent four or five days arguing back and forth with the Khans, maintaining how He, Trump had been so “viciously attacked,” and yet… Warren Buffet issued a detailed takedown after that, including a challenge to Trump: That if He, Trump would reveal his tax returns, the Oracle of Omaha would, too, and the two of them could answer questions about them at a jointly-held forum. So far, He, Trump’s only response has been, “I’m not very interested in Warren Buffet.”
EITHER it’s because he knows Buffet is significantly wealthier than He, Trump is, and is certainly a more successful and respected businessman, OR because the press hasn’t jumped on this as they have on the Khan Konflict…
And we all know that He, Trump won’t spend ten minutes on anything that doesn’t promise big ratings. On that subject, unlike just about anything else, his instincts are razor sharp!

Hey, Terri – I suspect the the one thing that He, Trump just could not live with is permitting any suspicion IN HIS OWN MIND that he is a “loser.” Other people can call him that, or “quitter” – or almost anything else, for that matter – and he will not allow himself to hear it. There is no other universe other than the one he’s constructed for his own personal need. Whatever you call him, if it doesn’t fit with He, Trump’s essential vision of himself, it just DOESN’T EXIST as far as he’s concerned.
It’s that kind of thinking that allows him to say – and probably actually BELIEVE – things like “The Hispanics love me,” and “I’ll do very well with the women,” and “I have a very good temperament, the best temperament,” “I’m very religious,” and that building “large structures” is as much a “sacrifice” as losing a son in war. I think we can be sure that he’s not just making this stuff up; he actually believes it. And that’s why he’s so dangerous.
Are there demons in his head? I think there are… And I’m betting they’re all echoes of the relentless voice of a powerful, cold, and harsh father, telling him over and over again that he just isn’t good enough, and never will be.
Does any of this “excuse” his behavior in any way? IT DOES NOT. It may be cause for some compassion on our part, but it sure as hell means that it would be an absolutely disastrous mistake to grant someone like this ANY sort of power over anything that affects anyone else – particularly one of the most powerful nations in the world.
And I do not use “disastrous” lightly here – and no one should.

Gato, I wonder if Trump could live with himself if he realized his reputation would forevermore be “quitter.” I know he would have all sorts of excuses (the election is “rigged”, he was treated “unfairly” but nonetheless he would always be a quitter (almost as bad as being a “loser.”) I just want him to go away so we can cleanse our minds of any memory of him. His daily screaming and lying is too much to take. And shame on the GOP and Trump supporters. They are constantly waving the flag and consider themselves the only true patriots, yet when a gold star family is attacked, they don’t say a word. Paul Ryan has proven himself to be a spineless worm, along with Mike Pence, Mitch MConnell et al. I hope the voters never forget how these people reacted when they were put to the test.

Mornin’ All…! Far as I can tell, He, Trump is not only doing everything he possibly can to “justify” his quitting, with all righteous indignation, but he’s doing it with the speed of a bullet train… I’d guess that the chances are about 50/50 that the RNC (and/or the Kochs, or somebody) could literally buy him out – but doing so would be pretty risky. (What do we think the chances are that He, Trump could keep his mouth shut about something like that?)
HIs traditional modus operandi seems to be to rip off anyone foolish enough to “make a deal” with him, walk away with plenty of cash, and then brag about it. If you think of the GOP as a sort of “client,” to whom promises were made, and whom He, Trump has apparently long considered just his kind of “suckers,” then it all makes perfect sense. Has he ever looked at anyone – other than himself – as anything other than a “loser”…?
Besides, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that he’s desperate for money. (Tax returns, anyone…?)
As for why people “support” him, this has never been about “policies,” from his POV. He doesn’t have any, and has made no attempt to formulate any. He’s just not interested. He’s given his followers, so many of whom feel powerless, impotent, frightened, and overwhelmed, the opportunity to “use” only thing they have left: The opportunity to scream out their rage, blame someone else, blame “the system,” and get their adrenaline going. It can be a great high…
When he says, “I am your voice,” he is right on target. That’s what he is, and that’s ALL he’s ever been.
Somehow the GOP, consumed by their arrogance and undiminished (and unacknowledged) hatred of That Uppity Black Guy, didn’t see this… Until now, when it’s become so apparent that even an amoeba would recoil in horror.
As for who’s next, keep an eye out for Paul Ryan. This is a perfect opportunity for him to step in to a Presidential run exactly as he did to the speakership: Initial refusal, followed quickly by “reluctant” acceptance, and the “humble” acknowledgement that duty has called him to serve his country, no matter the “personal sacrifice” involved. All total BS, of course, but, hey, it worked pretty well the first time around…

Hi, Mageen, and dear Sitters All… Two things are really surprising me about all this: One – how fast it’s all happening, and Two – how many GOP “heavies” are apparently ready to eat their own spawn… And get the hell out of Dodge.
But Humpty has now insulted a veteran (and thrown out a baby). By doing so, he has just about finished robbing the GOP of the few things they say they hold sacred, and, these days, the only things they have left to sell. They know that their devotees really don’t give a hoot about immigrants, women, minorities, non-Christians, or the poor. As long as those were the “only” people he was insulting, no problem.
BUT… He refused to “endorse” those who sold their souls to endorse him. And, IMO, THAT’s the one thing they will not tolerate.
Add to that their hopes that the usual big money people would come through (they haven’t), that Obama would remain “above politics” (he hasn’t), and that the majority of Republicans would forever hold “party” above morality, or even common sense. Apparently not.
Maybe they’ll be able to buy him off. Even if they can, they will then be scrambling against a well-oiled political machine (and there is no judgement in that from me, at least not at this moment; that kind of wonky detail work is what’s required to prevail in our system) that has worked for years to establish it’s ground game and is willing to hang in there for the long term..
There are less than a hundred days left….
PLUS, the Dems have the benefit of a sitting President whose awesome coolness, dedication to learning and understanding and to bloody hell WORK is, literally, world-class. Add to that his consummate grace, his obvious ability to reach out to anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances, with intelligence and respect, as is our magnificent First Lady, and you can see something of their problem.
Had the GOP been able to really grasp any of this, they would never have nurtured this truly unfortunate and dangerous “representative”… And would have done everything they could to prevent their constituents from doing so.

Had no idea of the details of Kaine’s record, and I’m impressed – AND I’m impressed with Hill for all the reasons Jim Wright mentions.
First thing I saw about Kaine was the day after he was selected. A friend posted a video on FB with Kaine playing harmonica with a bluegrass band called “The Seldom Scene.” Whipped me right back about fifty years to my hippie autoharp-playing days, and I said, “Wow… This guy must be pretty cool!”
Not exactly the basis for a reasoned and thoughtful decision on my part, but I sure do like me a harmonica-blowin’ Senator… Let’s just say it was a good intro!

Alrighty, Ladies and Gentlemen (in the most all-inclusive sense possible) of the Porch… Ol’ Gato is going to consult her tea leaves and PREDICT THE FUTURE!!
I have long felt (hoped, prayed, dreamed, begged) that He, Trump really has no wish whatsoever to actually BE President and have do any of the work, and was wondering how he would manage to get out of it, perhaps even prior to the election, without “losing face.”
I think I now see a possible scenario… Already he’s tweeting and fussing about how the Dems are trying to “rig” the debates by scheduling some of them in conflict with some NFL games, and how he’s being, yet again, treated “unfairly.” (As we all know, there is not a single Democratic NFL fan, so no problem THERE…)
So, here’s my scenario:
He, Trump refuses to be “treated unfairly,” and declines to debate. His supporters are right there agreeing with him.
Hillary decides to hold some televised “town halls.” Trump sends endless tweets criticizing every aspect of them, and reminds us that’s why he would not stoop to any debates. We, the public, will be forced to endure endless headlines about how He, Trump “slams,” “hits back,” “lashes out,” et cetera, for months on end.
Somehow, by the grace of the almighty heavens or SOMETHING, we manage to get to the actual election. He, Trump is handed a YUUUUGE defeat (please, anyone… Make it so…). He then tweets tirelessly, for a brief period of time, that he only lost because he refused to debate under such unfair conditions, and that, if he had, he would definitely have gotten “huge ratings.”
On November 10, 2016, Fox News will announce that He, Donald J. Trump, will be hosting a new and exciting weekly show where he will offer his own unique brand of hard-hitting, “tell-it-like-it-is” analysis of current events, assisted from time to time by the lovely Tiffany Trump, Melania Trump, Joe Arpaio, Cliven Bundy, David Duke, Donald Trump, Jr., and perhaps even the now-former governor of New Jersey.
The program will be called “*ucked Dynasty.” His fans will love it. The ratings will be “unbelievable”…

Great piece and my feeling exactly. It’s very scary. And it is just mind-boggling to me that people can cheer his lies even when confronted with the evidence that he’s lying. You can tell them about Safire’s totally made up hit piece and they’ll still saying “lying HIllary.” You can mention all the lawsuits against Trump and that Hillary’s been investigated umpty-ump times without anyone turning up anything sufficient to back up the accusations, but they still say “crooked Hillary.”
I’ve always faithfully voted, but once I was out of college (we’re talking the ’60s, so yeah, political activism – I’m probably on some “lists”), and in the workforce, that was about as far as I went. This very scary election has prompted me to volunteer my efforts to “get out the vote” among Dems. (On the other hand, worst comes to worst, I DO have relatives in Canada. Sigh.)

The completely-erroneously-titled “Citizens United” ruling by the Supreme Court is an absolute abomination. Getting that piece of garbage tossed would do an enormous amount of good toward campaign finance reform – and I’m pretty sure Hillary is committed to that goal. (Of course, it will take YEARS…)
So, in the bound-to-be-interminab interim, some more immediate action would certainly be welcome around here!

The nominees have been selected and yet there’s still great dissatisfaction amongst voters. Hopefully the electorate will make the sane choice…for Hillary. However, polls show an alarmingly close race at this time. Neither candidate instills hope or trust among voters…deservedly..or not.
It seems to me that Hillary and the Democratic Party could do one thing to instill trust and motivation into voters in this ongoing election process. That would be to champion…like Bernie did… public/comprehensive campaign finance reform. If Hillary (and all the Democratic candidates) would provide a clear and comprehensive plan for campaign finance reform, I believe that would renew many conflicted voter’s faith and trust in our (rigged) political process/system.
This may sound like a radical idea. However, too many voters are living with the grim realities of our current economic, environmental, and social injustices. Comprehensive campaign finance reform would be a large step in moving our politics from these radical realities. Now, politicians mostly serve the interests of the monied contributors to their campaigns and perhaps to their personal bank accounts. With comprehensive campaign finance reform, politicians could become public servants that, freed from the constancy of campaign demands and personal gain, would have the mandate to serve all citizens more equally.
I personally am trying to keep campaign finance reform front and center during this election season…and beyond. Every time I receive a request for money from the Democratic Party and/or candidates..multiple daily emails and snail mail… I reply that I won’t contribute until they put forward a comprehensive campaign finance reform plan.
It’s not much, but I can’t think of any other way to work for this change. If anyone reading this has any ideas, I’m very interested! Thanks for listening…hoping you’ll all join me in this effort to call together for comprehensive campaign finance reform. If we can do that, I believe real change will happen for us and for our future generations.

When all that matters to you is what your “ratings” are, I think you have a serious problem. No morals; just ratings. No principles; just ratings. No beliefs; just ratings. No “self”; just ratings. What a precarious, dreadful, and uncertain way to have to live…

Ah, yes.. It’s great to be incorporated… Here’s my experience – modest, but first-hand. As a freelancer, doing pretty well, I was advised by my accountant to become a “Corporation” in my home state, which I did. The rationale was that if anyone were to sue my Corporate Self, they would only be able to go after my “corporate” earnings. Anything my Corporate Self had generously granted to my Personal Self was untouchable. So, I could have tens of thousands of dollars in my “personal” bank accounts (I wished!), and only a few hundred in my “corporate” account, and those few hundred were the maximum that any plaintiff could expect. As you say, I could just roll merrily along… And keep in mind that I was the only “officer,” shareholder, manager, and maintenance crew of my “corporation.”
My “corporation” could also set its own fiscal year as it wished. This handy little stipulation allowed my husband (also a freelancer) and myself to juggle our respective “fiscal years” in order to minimize our “personal” incomes, and thus pay the lowest possible personal income taxes.
Yes, we had to pay “corporate taxes,” which weren’t much because we made sure our “corporations” had as little money as possible, and there were some additional bookkeeping costs, and paperwork to file, and so on. But, overall, we thought we were pretty damned clever. And, fortunately, nobody ever sued either one of us. (Frankly, had I ever caused real damage to someone by any inadvertent “corporate” behavior, my “personal” conscience would never have let me follow the “letter” of corporate law.)
I have never been able to “incorporate” my morals; apparently He, Trump has no problem whatsoever with labeling that as “loser thinking.” He seems perfectly happy to stiff a supplier for tens and tens of thousands, so long as He, Trump can afford those gold seat belt clips for his big, fancy, airplane.
That’s the kind of “deal maker” he’s proud to be – and I’m pretty damn sure that’s why we’re not seeing his tax returns.

Hmmm, about that history of bankruptcies. Yes, history. A settled repeated pattern over a period of years, and I do mean years. Bankruptcies most often hurt the “little guy” the most. Bankruptcy settlements can come in payoffs of pennies not the dollar. Thats the offer and what you have to accept or be struck off the rolls. For the “little guy” in small business this could and certainly has meant the end of his/her business while Trump and his lawyers roll merrily on. There are even some people who see this as premeditation on Trump’s part. It is actually cheaper for him to use his lawyers to fend off the full payment owed to someone, especially on a big project. It would be at the very least informative to compare his bankruptcies to all the bills he actually paid at full price by the due date. If anyone is up for this kind of research, be my guest!

Alaska, I’m not quite sure I buy that explanation for Trump’s supporters. That kind of anger would have been much more appropriate at the end of the Bush administration. My 401K lost half its value by 2008. The economy has steadily improved since then. Fourteen million jobs, stock market tripled, auto industry saved, etc. etc. Instead, I think Trump has given the many bigots in our country permission to vent their racial and social animus. His rejection of political correctness seems to give them carte blanche to say anything thing that comes to mind, and white people feel free to vent their grievances about “reverse discrimination”. They don’t like the fact Obama is in the White House, and who better to to justify their bigotry than the biggest racist of all, Trump.

Another ambitious politico seeking and, hopefully, acquiring power. The global political leaders would address her as any other President. The global view of America, for better or worse, would likely remain about the same. Throw in a sociopath that wants to set back race relations, ethnic progress and religious liberties back 100+ years…. and now the public face of America looks like Archie Bunker. You might say…”So…what?” Well… for one…the face of the world looks less and less like Trump every, single day…basc demographics. Not where America wants to be in the 21st Century…and, yeah…that makes Hillary a Hell of a lot better choice. But go ahead and throw away your vote. See what’s left of the USA after a Trump Presidency. Was going to address this when I finally respond to Ken’s distorted version of my record on “these political elections”, but the damage from Trump really only gets felt, if he wins the election. I’m sure they are perfectly nice people, but somehow I don’t think his children have run into too much adversity in their lives. Interestingly enough, now that I think about it, I can’t recall He, Trump saying ANYTHING about “family values,” “traditional marriage,” et cetera, other than mentioning that women should be punished for getting an abortion, and people should be able to pee wherever they want. (This latter is the only thing he’s ever said with which I can agree.)
In fact, ALL he talks about is “illegal immigrants,” “jobs,” that pie-in-the-sky wall, and, now, “law and order”…
I really don’t know why I continue to torture myself with all his crap… The question I just can’t answer is how any of this appeals to ANYONE… How absolutely no actual “plan” or “approach” continues to be acceptable. Do people realize that they’re actually voting for people who will have positions of real power? And that those people will use that power to pass laws that will truly affect them?
Are some of us just unable to distinguish between “reality” TV, and actual reality? What happens on “Duck Dynasty,” or “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” or “Dancing With the Stars” is all (so they tell me) fun, but when you flip the switch, it all disappears, and your life hasn’t changed a bit.
None of this is effing “Judge Judy”…!
But most of us here already believe this… Sorry to spend so much time preaching to the choir… Maybe I should get outside and do a little weeding…

Your odd twist the last several years…to look away from clear logic and fact…remains… disturbing. I DID vote Libertarian the last two Presidential cycles. If that was the goal… accomplished. However, so long as one Party of the the other, of the main two, throws out a candidate so vile that I cannot stomach to be President… then I divert AWAY from the Libertarian “Party” and go vote for the other guys… because the Libs have ZERO chance of an Electoral College victory… and I will NOT waste a vote during a critical election. Based on your logic… I would never vote Libertarian again, if the GOP kept throwing out “Trumps”. I would keep voting Dem.

Almost every wife is going to call the woman who sleeps with her husband ugly names. That is not germane to an intelligent discussion about her qualifications to be the next President. How the fact that she chose to “stand by her man” is not being used as a flaw is beyond me. What happened to the sanctity of marraige? Oh, yeah, now I remember, your candidate dumps wives when they reach whatever point that they don’t fit his image anymore. Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate in this election, deal with it.

As for his acolytes supporting any of his “plans,” how could they? Neither he, nor they, seem to have a clue as to what any of those might be, far as I can tell. So what’s to “support”…? Repetition of unclarified platitudes seems all that’s possible. Fortunately for him, none of his fans seem to want anything more from him, and their level of curiosity is about as minimal as his own – somewhere right around zero.

And it was apparent to me when I watched trump deliver that line about the Russians, that he WAS being sarcastic. I didn’t need him to tell me that the next day. As for his line about hitting those speakers until their heads spin (clearly directed at Michael Bloomberg) is was more typical bullshit from trump that is so far over any line I can think of for even a business man, much less a presidential candidate. He is a loose canon and I still don’t understand the thinking of anyone that would actually vote for him. There are a number of trump supporters on this mailing list and not one of them has come forward to admit supporting him and I’m too much of a gentleman to call them out specifically.

The Sec/State also has no control over how much money Congress will appropriate for the security that is not under the Sec/State’s control. Look at the Appropriations Committees in both the House and Senate. The majority party controls both and that party is Republican. As for laughter, people can laugh when they are frustrated. It keeps them from crying and swearing up a storm. Hill had no experience with the type of case that was being dumped on her. Plus she was using legal avenues available to her to have the case assigned to someone who did have the proper experience. Whitewater was a legal land deal that was stretched into an obscenity at the urging of -guess who – Republicans. Enabler? By the way, is this what you think of every woman who discovers her husband has strayed? As for all the stuff you think is gospel about Hillary, check out a guy named Safire. He wrote an article over-stuffed with lies that he created out of whole cloth. He knew it. He about as much as admitted it. He did not recant. I know of a lifelong Republican who has in the past months said pretty much everything you did, dear Helen! I bet he isn’t the only one such “R” who is doing so. I recall how the wives of Eagle level R’s went ballistic in print in a Republican periodical about Sarah Palin and how McCain was deliberately scuttling his chances by picking her. I’ve rarely if ever heard such vindictive wrath from women in my entire long life! No, they did not vote their ticket! And this R guy I just told you about is voting for Hill! I could almost swear this is a sing of the Second Coming!

Helen, you nailed it again. All I’d like to add is my take on Fox/Faux News. I’ve come up with a new moniker for it: Fux News – it’s what they do.
The colonoscopy I had today was a breeze, preparing for it included, compared to what I endured watching the RNC last week. Actually the colonoscopy itself was a breeze with the nicest nurses and doctors I’ve ever had treat me.

Now, Mike, you have to have known that you’d be pretty much jumped all over around here… Maybe that’s what you were looking for. (Some people like that kind of thing…) I’ll try to be reasonably civil…
The Democratic candidate may have been “investigated” by the FBI (and endless Congressional “committees,” as well – and exonerated every single time), but she has not been involved in approximately 3500 lawsuits over the last ten years. Nor does she brag about how well she can game the system. She did not found a fraudulent “University” which WILL require your “lesser of two evils” to appear in court – and the only reason that isn’t happening before the election is by the generous accommodation of some judge. Nor is she currently being sued by the father/manager of those “Freedom Kids” who so adorably performed at some of He, Trump’s “rallies,” because they have not been paid. She has not expressed her admiration for dictators because “they know how to kill terrorists.” She does not think this country sucks, and she certainly doesn’t think she’s the “only one” who can save it. She doesn’t promise to be everybody’s “voice.” She expects to listen to the voices of others, and has done so her entire life.
Her supporters are not primarily related to her by marriage or heredity. The “stars” who willingly support her are not former stars of “Duck Dynasty” or soap operas. Her supporters hold the highest offices in the land, have lost children to unreasonable gun violence, are of all colors, races, religions, ethnic backgrounds, genders, and physical abilities.
No one, to my knowledge, has left the Democratic party because they feel her principles, character, and rhetoric, are repugnant enough to make them abandon a lifetime of loyal party support.
Is that enough “explanation” for you, or shall I continue…? You let me know.

Mike, your hatred is showing. Hillary Clinton did nothing wrong in terms of the tragedy in Benghazi. Eight investigations and 11 hours of testimony prove that. Yet in spite you that, you assert she did something wrong. You want to believe the worst of her. Perhaps you should ask yourself why.

I really hope someone out in democrat land can explain just how your lying, manipulative, cheating candidate comes off one bit better than the sooty excuse for a republican candidate does. At least (to my knowledge ) Trump hasn’t been investigated by the FBI for mishandling classified information, nor has he had a hand in the death of Americans in Bhengazi. I believe your candidate has s much longer list of unAmerican and unpatriotic practices. Maybe we could agree that neither is a great choice. I believe Trump is at least the lesser of two evils.

Oh thank the dear Lord, you are back and you’ve found the words to say it like it is. Just sit down dear and rest a minute, I’ll get you a rag to blot all that sweat off your forehead. Gotta keep you going good so you can watch more of the convention tonight.
After that depressing circus in Cleveland last week (was it my imagination or were all the speakers part of the family?) I was just lower than a snake’s belly. Good heavens that horrible man had even convinced me there was nothing to live for, nothing to look forward to, nothing left in the US but fear and violence.
THEN came that lovely breath of fresh air from Philly — maybe it was the hint of steak and onions that made it smell extra enticing. Every speaker restored my soul, minute by minute. If only I could live in this DNC bubble until November — “Himself” hasn’t even been in the news much this week, except of course for the musical groups who are filing cease and desist orders for using their music without permission.
Helen and Margaret…please, please, we need you just the way we needed JFK and Jackie, just the way my mom and dad needed Harry S. and Bessie, the way Grandma and Grandpa needed that chicken for every pot.
Please keep us going….just the way the President did…and remember he said we just have to choose which of the emotions we want to feel and live.

Please all you young Bernie fans, I have been a Bernie fan for nearly 20 years, but I will vote for Hillary. A non-vote or a write-in or a vote for another party is a vote for the idiot Palins evil-er twin. Don’t be responsible for allowing that asshat to win because you didn’t understand the repercussions of sitting out an election. Democrats lost control of both the House and the Senate because of people pouting about one thing or another and not going to the polls. Remember that the Congress makes the laws, not the President, so vote Democratic for all National, State and County candidates. And be very careful which judges you vote for. The bad ones from our states end up on The Supreme Court.
The Koch Brothers are putting all their efforts into getting full control in the Senate with a veto proof majority and that can not happen. They also want to control the Supreme Court. They hate the asshat because they know they can not control him.
But, they can control the Congress,the lobbyists and the Supreme Court.
The Asshat wants to be the Emperor, the dictator and it is no surprise that his BFF is Putin. He want to be Putin, wants to rule like Putin, wants to be the “supreme”. Don’t be responsible for that by sitting out this very important election.

What a breath of fresh air! Or more accurately, a tonic for my wrenched gut after my sister informed me today that she was voting for Trump because as a Christian she couldn’t vote for anyone who was pro-abortion. It scares the hell out of me because I know she is representative of so many. So thank you Helen for telling it like it is and a special thank you to Margaret for sharing that your life-long Repub husband is voting for Hillary!

Thank you for writing this. You ladies are geniuses. I love President and Mrs. Obama. When I’ve read blog and Facebook comments that denigrate our president, I’ve said repeatedly, How can you write such horrible lies about our commander in chief? My father was in the military for many years. Even during the Watergate scandal, he and my mother never said anything against President Nixon because my father worked for the United States. President Nixon, while a far-off figure, was his boss. He was our family’s president because he was the commander in chief. (After my dad retired, my parents had a few things to say about politics, but they never told lies the way that Trump does.) Much of Trump’s behavior includes symptoms of psychopathy. Several weeks ago I was trapped in a nail salon with two women who were getting pedicures and going on and on about how much they loved Trump and how he would get down to business and stop the nonsense once he actually had the nomination and the nonsense was only intended to draw attention to his campaign. If I hadn’t been in the middle of my manicure, I would have walked out. I held my tongue, something I normally don’t do, because I was afraid of those women. What if they attacked me? That’s something Trump supporters love to do. So here I sit, sad and ashamed that such a creature is a nominee for president, and I was too afraid to say anything to those women. What if they did beat me up? They couldn’t do worse than my ex-husband did. I’m done with being quiet. I’m not going to put myself in the line of fire because you can’t argue with a fool, but I hereby proclaim loud and proud that I will vote for Hillary Clinton. I am proud that we’ve had the Obamas and the Bidens as the leaders of our country. I knew we were in safe hands, and we will be in safe and compassionate hands with Hillary Clinton as our president.

And to all… My husband, too, is a lifelong Republican, who decided some time ago that he would never vote for the Orange Thing… That’s Step One around here, for which I’m grateful. HOWEVER, working quietly on Step Two, which is his realization that voting for anyone other than Hillary is fatal… That’ll take some time.

My admiration for you both continues to rise…. kudos. Brilliant. I’m over joking around saying that I’ve updated my passport and am looking for a new homeland if Trump is elected. Truth be told, if Trump gets elected our entire planet is at risk. No one (no where) is safe. And most terrifying of all is the outrageous ignorance and sheer stupidity of “most” of our country (if he’s elected). Too much for words. Makes me think we’re all living in the Hunger Games of dictatorship. Forget civil rights, basic human decency could be lost for (ever). Can’t imagine a world like that…. can’t believe we’re even having to touch these considerations. Utterly tragic.

Well, Ladies, one again you are right on target. But you forgot that in addition to his complete lack of any morals, he brags about the innumerable time he has had venerial disease. Perhaps one wasn’t cured and it has rendered his brain destroyed. But again, you did not mention that he is in the pay of the Russians. They have bankrolled him since his bankruptcies and leg image banks won’t lend to him. Now they want payback. Trump says he will hand NATO allies over to Putin. Guess he will honor treaties the way he honors signed contracts. Trump is a quisling, a traitor. He should be in a Federal prison for the remainder of his sick sick life. And the press is much to blame, they let him get away with anything because they’re cowards.
And my dyed red republican husband is voting for Hillary and our Sen Tim Kaine. Who by the way, trump thought was from New Jersey. Guess he can’t read, either.

Only yesterday, Trump outdid himself in batshit crazy when he encouraged Russian hacker to publish Hillary’s supposedly missing emails. It’s not the first time that Trump encourages hacking. He plays dirty like he always did in business. Anything to win even if it’s illegal. He deserves a good smackdown and it will be a treat to see a woman give it to him in November. Go Hillary!

Thank you, Thank you!! You call a spade a spade, and hit the nail on the head! Trump is mean, greedy, thin skinned and narcissistic! And the ones voting for him are those that don’t watch much more than Fox News!!! Did you see Jon Stewart on Colbert’s show — boy did he eviscerate Sean Hannity.

THIS: Political correctness is having the emotional intelligence and decency not to use language, evoke images or take actions that marginalize, offend or otherwise insult people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.
