The question is not whether Trump is a serious candidate.  The question is whether the GOP is a serious party?

Margaret, I’ve been doing a lot of musing lately about things that just don’t add up in my head. Of course, at my age lots of things don’t add up anymore, like why I keep a shopping list but then forget to bring it with me when I shop. But lately it’s been about bigger things like guns, wars and the stupidity of the Republican Party.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, a document that gave me the right to call Sarah Palin a bitch (1st Amendment) and idiots the right to own guns (2nd Amendment). And it’s hard for me to cherish my right to free speech while chastising others for reveling in their right to bear arms. Of course, there’s just one little problem with that. There is supposed be a little something called a “well regulated militia” bearing those arms.  Instead what we’ve got is a bunch of unregulated bigots. In their delusional belief that guns make us all more safe, the NRA has succeeded in its self-fulfilling prophecy of creating a world filled with more guns. No one seems to ever consider the idea that a world with fewer guns might make for a world that needs fewer guns.

And to prove my point, even Christmas has been turned into a war.  Honestly, is it really that offensive to just wish someone Happy Holidays?  After all, Merry Christmas doesn’t exactly evoke images of the birth of Jesus as much as it does a fat man in a red suit with a bag of toys.  Realizing that counting down the number of shopping days to his birthday might be a little off-putting to Jesus, I think I’ll gladly stick with my Happy Holidays regardless of some haughty born-again’s desire to hear Merry Christmas.

But what I find most confusing these days is the Republican Party’s constant insistence that banning Muslims and Mexicans is not a Republican value and that Donald Trump’s extreme views are not representative of the GOP. Funny. Maybe in their efforts to roll back the Voting Rights Act,  Republicans have forgotten that votes actually mean something,  and currently the one Republican counting the most votes wants to ban Muslims and Mexicans.

Sometimes you might not like where you end up, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t actually there.  Like it or not, the place they have landed is a debate stage filled with angry politicians calling for more wars.  And Trump is what you get when  card-carrying NRA members hell bent on wishing everyone a Merry Christmas are the largest voting block in your party. Nine of the GOP’s finest were debating on that stage but I swear there’s a tree stump in a Louisiana swamp with a higher IQ than all of them.

If you ask me, it’s time for a new party, but sadly nobody asked me. Happy Holidays everyone.  I mean it.  Really.

  12. Trump is THE WORST choice since Palin. There really are no good choices on the Tea Party side of the aisle. Sadly there are no longer any sane Republicans. Money has made them puppets to those who now control the party of hate, fear and incredible ignorance. Their handlers manipulate the polls, they lie about everything and there are no lengths to which they will go to get what they want. The Tea Party Repubs have sold themselves and no longer have freedom of speech, thought or deed.

It is time for term limits for the congress. Being in congress was never meant to be a “career”. Presidents have term limits, governors have term limits. Why do we insist on no term limits for the Senate and House who essentially run the country ? The Supreme Court should have term limits as well. Of course, if they took the money out of politics that would go a long ways to balancing the scale.

It is a little bit funny but terribly scary that the Tea Party can do nothing about this raging idiot, Trump. If he doesn’t get their nom, he will run as an independent and ruin the chances of the candidate they ultimately choose. They have opened up Pandora’s box and now they have to live with the consequences. And tragically, so do we.

  13. Thank you Pi and Gato,
I could not have said it better myself. Life is about experiences, cultures and families/tribes. In learning about each other we broaden our own horizons and strengthen our bonds with humanity. I find most organized “religion” to be controlling and in the end all about money and property. If we do not learn to take care of one another and our little blue planet, we all lose. All the money in the world will not save you from death. Money is what drives the “evil” on this planet and will eventually kill us all if we do not stop these fanatics.
I wish you all peace, joy and happiness in the new year, but remember, you must fight for it. A good place to start is to VOTE out the climate deniers, money grabbers, haters and Career politicians. Lets make 2016 a year for Healing.

  16. Ya know Chrispy- Ra was an ancient Egyptian god, not Roman.
And Zeus was Greek… and Constantine DID stop the persecution of early Christians… and a whole lotta other things you don’t seem to include in your race to OWN what Christianity/religion is.
And contrary to your snarkiness about the so-called Roman worship of stuff, it was a lot simpler than that :
“To the Romans, religion was less a spiritual experience than a contractual relationship between mankind and the forces which were believed to control people’s existence and well-being”
    http://www.roman-empire.net/religion/religion.html

Folks here in the Arctic do not worship the sun- never have. Not for the 10,000 years my mother’s people have been here.
We do keep track of the light and dark and the chores which come with each season.
We rest in the dark time of the year and work endlessly in the light time of the year. You likely have no idea what 20 hours a day dark or light does to the fabric of everyday life and certainly not what no sun above the horizon for a couple months is like.
Barrow will have less than an hour of daylight around the 3rd week of January after setting about the 3rd week of November.
Get over your snottiness about folks and the light, eh, and look around at a world where folks have a myriad of experiences different than yours and just as “true” and “real”… maybe more so 😉

  18. Excellent point, Terri! If you want to see a REALLY cool sun-worshipping setup, check out the sacred place at the top of Macchu Pichu, in Peru. How these people knew these things, and we still refer to them as “pagan,” is absolutely beyond me…

IMO, what’s really “pagan” is strip mining, deforestation, swine offal pools, fracking, standing around with signs saying “God hates fags,” belching CO2 ceaselessly into the air, dumping all kinds of s**t into rivers and the sea, and a culture where any wingnut who wants one can get a gun. (Oh, and a culture of which an alarming percentage of the populace thinks Bad Hair Boy is a viable Presidential candidate…)

On that cheery note, have an eggnog!

  21. You are right, Gato. To the Romans, it was always about the light.( the sun god, Ra ) . It was always pagan and about worshiping the sun and all the other pagan gods. The proof is in the Vatican with the sundial in the center of St. Peters Square, and St. Peter, and all the saint’s statues. St Peter was actually Zeus, the god of the sea with the trident. Embracing the Christian religion was merely a political ploy to unite the empire, and get the Christians calmed down, becoming part of empire, while joining rhe pagans of all the conquered nations with a familiar ring to their ancient religions, as well.
Jesus was never meant, by the romans to be honored at this time of year, at all. It was always about the soltice of the sun.
Actually, I read that December 25th was Lucifer’s Day. Check it out!
Real Christ followers have always been killed off, and an enemy of the state, no matter which state. They were fooled, once again by truly Godless peoples. If one did not believe in the state approved changes to the beliefs about Jesus, and the new roman religion, you were still killed crueling by the romans.
Man always worshiped that which he feared and lacked understanding of, in his search for his creator. Fire and Light were some the first idols man worshiped. The so called illuminated ones still do. They just have not been, yet, inspired by the true God. They may never be.
We, Christians must remember what this season is to those who celebrate it. It has nothing, yet, everything to do with Jesus and His Birth!
God shall prevail in the end. If you skip to the end of the book, God wins!
His Son was sent as Messiah for a purpose. We are now free from Adam’s sin of not believing and trusting, to go directly to the throne of God, to ask for forgiveness of our sin, and have a reuntied relationship with the Father. All this because of Jesus’ Birth, Death ( of our sins) and Resurection ( we can be saved, for an everlasting life, with God, in spite of our past sins.)
We are now, because Jesus was sent as the Messiah, the Children of God, whose inheritance is life everlasting in Heaven with God, the Father, and Jesus, who sits at the right hand of the Father, who is the Real Light of the World.
There are two Sons ( Suns), which one will you fall down and worship!
One gives light which goes away at night, or, the Light of the World, which gives everlasting Light, and everlating Life!
God Bless You, All, and Have a Blessed Christmas!

I never said ALL the Jesuits, Catholics and Moslems are BAD. The majority, like you sheep, merely beileve their leaders and never look behind the scenes, nor do they read and quest for REAL history.
Secret Societies are running things behind the scenes, and were not just made up during the middle ages, they were known of and better understood by earlier peoples, especially from Europe.
They still exist, but more hidden because they control the medias which could bring more light to the masses on the subject. Those in HIGH places within those and most other organizations ARE those making up the secret societies, which I speak of.
Sheeple are people who are blinded by traditions, and lied to throughout history, in various ways; having in-bread notions which make up a truly dumbed down society.
Remember, what Patriots Jefferson, or Hamilton, once said ” Many times, the smartest man in the room, Is one most hated.” ( Probably because the information being given is beyond the sheeples capabilities of understanding? Or is it that they cannot accept ever being wrong? Anger during discussions towards others with different information or opinions shows a lack of knowledge or fear of NOT being right. ). It is a sad note that humans can be so small so as to not see beyond what they already embrace and understand as a truth.
I do not take offense to your unbelief in the study of any and all things that really matter. Do not just chatter. Have an impact on the human existence.
Scientists ALL have had that same uphill battle to finally have their studies and understood knowledge finally accepted by mankind. That is normal in a world of small people. It seems that never ends in this imperfect world.
No Matter What You Say about my understandings on every subject, I still forgive you during this holy season, and every other of the 364 + holy days.
I Wish You All a Merry Christmas, and Happy Holy Days to Everyone !

I have no idea where you get your so-called facts, but if I had to guess you either pulled them out of your ass or you read/listen to people who are similarly unhinged. Disparaging the Jesuits and all Catholics and Muslims is just plain stupid. Bigoted people like you are the biggest threat to this country. Real Christians abide by the word of Christ and show compassion and kindness to all refugees, including Syrians. And no, Europe has not turned away refugees. Germany, France, Italy and others have welcomed many Syrian refugees. Facts are facts–but I guess you don’t pay much attention to anything that doesn’t reek of a conspiracy theory.

Have you ever been to an Apple store when a new iPhone comes out? I have, and there is inevitably a looong line of people, with cash, waiting to buy as many of the item as they possibly could, without a service contract – which makes them much more expensive, BTW. When I asked an Apple employee about why they were doing that, she said they take them back to their home countries, where they can sell them for way more than they paid. (And no, those countries are not generally in the Middle East.) There is no law against doing this, BTW, nor should there be.)

As far as I recall, the first Americans DID have to fight for their freedom here. “We” slaughtered them, and their descendants now live on whatever land “we” have graciously permitted them to inhabit.

The most dangerous aspect of life in this country is the insane proliferation of firearms, the ease of obtaining them, and the absolute refusal to enact any sort of reasonable restrictions, registration, or regulation. THAT is what more than 70% of our citizenry really wants, INCLUDING members of the NRA. Period.

  39. The large numbers of cell phones were sold to a very few buyers..That is what alarmed the folks at Walmart enough to limit the sales one to a customer. The media did not state that it was to Middle Easterners, as it could have possibly construed as politically incorrect….by the idiots who do not sense danger.
People in America have never had to fight for freedom on this land, since the North vs. South. Europeans have a completely different view on the refuges and the terror that they bring by those radically indoctrinated by ISIS.
Americans need to awaken from the American Dream. We are at risk by our open borders.
The last attack in San Bernadino ? WAS made by radicalized immigrant Moslems. They ARE a threat to the homeland.
Watch the PBS Frontline Video I linked a few minutes ago. While the talking heads continue with their Left rhetoric, and how we are all immigrants..the the imminent danger is overlooked by those that chose to keep their heads buried in the sands. Europe sees and understands…..not the silent Americans.
I will recheck what was reported on the cell phones, d on St. Louis NBC, CBS, FOX Newsfeed…The Post does not always re-iterate and regurgitate the media mind control we are fed.

  40. Try to hold your apocalyptic horses there a second, Chrispy… Missouri itself is not getting “10,000 Syrian refugees”; that’s the anticipated number FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. It is, at the moment, unknown how many will be resettled in any particular state. (I read the St. Louis Dispatch article, BTW, for this information.) And, no, they are NOT mostly “young men of fighting age”; they are families, with children, and sometimes grandparents.

You don’t suppose the alleged “run on cell phones” at Walmart could in any way be related to the impending holidays, do you…? (There has also been a recent “run on gun sales,” too. Does that bother you, even the tiniest bit…? I’m betting those sales weren’t to “Syrian refugees,” either; I’m betting they were to “American Patriots,” defending their misinterpreted “second amendment rights”…)

And keep in mind the recent Texan BS about Walmart basements being converted into “deportation camps” as part of the dreaded secret “government takeover”… (But, yes – tell those lies often enough and people will believe them.)

Every time anyone opens his/her mouth and starts talking about how threatening “the Muslims” are, and how we need to watch out, it just provides narrative for all that indoctrination that so alarms you. Of course ISIS is doing its damnedest (deliberate choice of word) to convert people – but WE DON’T HAVE TO WRITE THEIR MATERIAL FOR THEM.

Until I watched this PBS Documentary, a few weeks ago, on the ISIS Indoctrination of Pakistani Children, I would have said Trump may be harsh in his thinking, concerning the limiting of immigration of refuges from the Middle East. After seeing this documentary, I better understood the danger of the ideology of the radicalization of the young Moslems in Pakistan. changed my mind on that matter.
In 1798, a law was enacted to protect the newly formed United States from the dangers of letting in the British as immigrants. This law was used in WWII. No enemies were allowed to enter, America for a time, from the enemy countries, until the war was over.
These poor radicalized children will never think well of America, in any terms.
We must protect our homeland from any threats, from within, and without! A lax thinking is what caused the fall of the Roman Empire, along with the same ideals are being promoted in this country, today. According to polls, ( whatever that is worth ? ) 70% of Americans feel that the borders must be secured and the bringing in of Syrian refuges are an eminent threat to America! It is NOT forever to not allow them into the country, only for a short time, until we access and combat in some form the attacks being carried on around the world by ISIS.

Here IS the documentary….Real Eye Opening…You will never think the same.

I believe Jefferson once said no need to lie, just put off telling the truth, for a long enough time. It works the same.
That is just what has happened to the world, today. Lies and misinformation has created chaos in the minds of the majority of men, not knowing the truth.

Also, Missourians are getting some 10,000 Syrian refugees, with most being younger men of fighting age! Just the other day, as reported by the mainstream media, in Mid Missouri, there was a run on the purchase of cell phones at a Walmart Store, by a very few buyers, AND also, gone missing in Missouri, were many empty and otherwise, propane tanks, in large proportions.
I was told by a military man, 15 years ago, that the center of all communication trunk lines to all parts of America is in the Mid West.
It would be the most vulnerable part of America to attack, as necessary, to disconnect and isolate without communication, all the other conjoined parts of our nation, in order to take us over.
ISIS is a great threat to this country. The radicalization of recent VERY YOUNg Moslems in the Middle East is the threat, not so much those Moslems of yesteryear, coming to America! of earlier times are NOT the problem. Islam is not being used a religion, but rather, with the radicalization of even tiny babes, in Pakistan, it has turned into an ideology of hate and death.
Europe knows of the dangers and how the ideology works, and refuses to be damaged by the ideology. Most of Europe refuses any refugees. The men of fighting age should be fighting for their country, not running away. I am not sure how many men refuges of fighting age, would be leaving their countries and running away during any war in history? If that happened in our country, the young men would be thought of as traitors, no? I will post the link to a PBS Special on “the Children of Isis… “

  45. Jesus was born in spring, we are told. After the crucifixion of Christ, thousands of many small sects of followers who were scattered, were killed off? They were fed to lions, and killing them was considered a sport of the time.
The Roman pagan government embraced Christianity in about 320 A..D. and created the roman church as a political ploy to unite the many peoples, having been conquered, most of which were pagans. They incorporated all the known pagan gods and goddesses into Christianity to be eventually accepted as a lie, by those who were not even allowed to read the words of God, His story, the Bible. Many more man made traditions were also woven into the beliefs and dogma over the last 1700 years.
Even the protestors movement of 1520. A.D. carried with them, into their newly founded churches, many of the man made traditions, like the cross,
( the romans used the cross alone, and was known as a roman cruel means of death ) and many other beliefs, from the times of the Roman Empire. Many of the man made lies, accepted as truths over the centuries, which should have been scrapped, but were not, so we can really say the reformation was never really totally completed.
We should not even honor the cross, as Jesus died, once and for all. Any replay of his death, over and over, again, is actually a denial of the and discounts and shows disbelief that we are set free from condemnation and death, by his death for our sins. We are free of death, now and God loves us so. Much; he wants the relationship with man that the death of Jesus allows. We are free of sin, by forgiveness, so as to go to be able to go directly to the throne of God for a relationship. Man no longer needed an intercessor such as the Jewish High Priests, between him and God.
Easter and Halloween and even Christmas are satanic….pagan holy days, honoring the various gods. Even the Vatican STILL has in its courtyard, the sundial and the obelisk to honor Osiris and is a Phaelic symbol.
We should honor God, Pray and Put Him First. Man does not have a right to make any man higher than the rest. Only God has the authority to do things like that. We are all brothers.
Being politically correct seems to be the norm, today, but that is not what Christianity is. We are different, and we do not want to be of the world, only in the world. Like the Jewish peoples who were set aside from all men, at the time, to proclaim the one true God; Christians are set aside by the way we live and Love One Another. We were never meant to just rollover, however. Our love of God is to stand firm..

  46. Heather, talking politics has no value. We get whatever leaders are placed in positions which the powers that be decides for us. They are doing whatever it takes to realize their goals of world domination.
The 83 districts of Jesuits are under the Superior General who calls all the shots. The 12 families are the men behind controling the banking, educational and medical aystems of the world, and are direct decendants of the original Kings and Courts of Europe and the other Continents.
Our own President Lincoln wrote a letter to his son, held and later a copy found by his Secretary, stating Lincoln feared and knew the Jesuits were dangerous to all countries. Everywhere they went under the guise of educating the poor, their natural resources were stolen, and the countries always stayed as third world countries. The poor could never utilize their own countries natural resouces to become more affluent, and break out of poverty. Lincoln said the Jesuits brought war, and chaos, and poverty, everywhere they went, to control the politics and printing and controllng their money. There were those back in the 1860’s that thought the Jesuits had him killed. Assasination was and still is their specialty. They take oaths to do whatever the Superior General tells them to do. ( he is called the black pope, and runs the church ) They are always to be given forgiveness for everything they are brainwashed to so as to meet their ends.
They have infiltrated every organization, political party, and government, and religion around the world. That is why everthing has changed. They are also demon worshipers. They fund BOTH sides of every war since 1812. Very interesting, if you like history, and really care about mankind, and want to save it.
The average person joining ANY organization, today, and throughout history has no knowledge of the goings ons of these organizations.

  48. You’re right, not everything has to be about Santa and gifts. But also, not everything has to be about Jesus. There are lots of wonderful things about this season that we can ALL enjoy together – the pretty lights, the time with family and friends, etc. Stop trying to draw lines in the sand.

  58. Bless your heart, Rebecca, if Christ had a birthday it would not be at this time of year, following evidence in your own Bible. The Catholic church, the earliest incarnation of the Christian faith, decided that coopting the holy days (hence holidays, so where is the objection again?) of faiths in countries Christianity spread to was a way to ensure people were comfortable. Easter- Oestre. Look up the Yuletide traditions. The middle of the dire winter turning point celebrations.

Please at least TRY and educate yourself, rathe than treating your mind like a steel trap – all shut and rusting, buried under detritus?

But please – you have a happy holidays, and stay safe:)

Helen, I used to like everything you said like in 2008. You do not seem to be the same person. Your writing has become way more blasting, and mean spirited ! What’s Up?
You all were totally Republican, and now? You seem to be Left and way more Progressive in your thinking! What’s up with that?
I will have to check. In a search? ???? I do not think you are the same dame, this year !

  61. Rebecca, how about taking a kind remark at face value and answering it with kindness in return? Being inclusive doesn’t mean you’re losing anything.

Does it actually hurt you in any way to say “Thank you! Same to you!” if someone doesn’t use your terms? I’m a Christian. I celebrate Christmas. I say Merry Christmas.Sometimes I inadvertently say it to a Jewish person and they say, “Thank you, but I’m Jewish.” I smile and wish them a happy Hanukkah. Kind wishes are kind wishes. Accept them with a smile, and give them back in return. Jesus might like that, right? Peace on earth, good will to ALL. ❤

    PS – Merry Christmas!

  62. Helen, my aging and sometimes addled brain has difficulties with lists as well! Not only do I forget to bring them with me, but even when I I remember, I don’t always check it twice…forgetting stuff that’s right on the list….Oy!!
And I’m with you on the Rethuglicans’ penchant for war…why is including everyone’s seasonal celebration considered a war on Christmas? Now they’re attacking the concept of being (too) PC….more war! Including everyone…being PC… sounds like a move towards a more peaceful and kind world to me.
Which brings me to wishing Helen and Margaret and all the porch folks Happy Holidays and a healthy, happy and saner 2016.

  63. Debate? These yahoos wouldn’t know a debate if it kissed them! Its all just a lot of playground stupidity! And I still say Trump plans to run as an independent and he has all the $$ and lawyers to turn the legislation around in states that forbid an independent candidate. I bet that is exactly what his legal squad is quietly doing right now which is why he is unrelenting in his psychotic campaign. He obviously has only contempt for the other simians on the stage with him. In his eyes they are all losers and he is the only winner.

As for seasonal greetings, why not just grunt at each other and avoid any possible fight fights? I mean it. Really!

Our police don’t carry guns! Donald trump has to regarded as a joke and I find it so scary that he is still in the game and bring taken seriously. I guess when only 1 in 10 Americans holds a passport this xenophobic attitude is more understandable. Keep the posts coming. Cheers!

  66. How wonderful to find a little sanity in this country! I lived 40 yrs in California where I participated in the first successful march on Los Angeles City Hall for Gay rights (early 60’s). Before that, I was the first full time RN hired in Planned Parenthood in ’64 in N.Oklahoma. Then after 40 yrs in California I retired in Texas and found this part of the country had completely lost their collective minds. Thanks to a friend I found you. These idiots in Texas have open carry and are trying to get in all the restricted areas and have set Women’s Rights back to the dark ages. I was a nurse on an Indian Reservation and started a black Planned Parenthood before desegregation and I didn’t even carry a bow and arrow! Keep up your good work! (I’m 81, by the way!)

  67. Happy Holidays does not cut it. Merry Christmas puts Christ back into the reason. And Jesus is the real reason for the season. What is so wrong with calling each holiday by it’s given term. Nobody says Happy Holidays for Happy Chanukah ! Let’s quit being polictially correct with the celeration of the birth of Jesus. Not every thing has to be about Santa and gifts.

When we cede the higher ground, we are just another country. These comments betray those ideals and make us less safe in the process.
