Margaret, I had a hell of a good time watching the news last night. Sending that Davis girl to jail has the GOP madder than a wet hen. Huckabee says that Christianity has now been criminalized in America. That asshat Ted Cruz called it Judicial Tryanny. And Rand Paul warned that local governments might just have to get out of the marriage business. Lord I sure wish the rapture would finally happen so the rest of us could get back to enjoying a world with fewer idiots in it.
Speaking of idiots, Trump said he really didn’t know much about it. Bless his heart. She’s not Mexican or Chinese so Donald didn’t know what to say.
Now I feel for little Kim Davis. I really do. Poor thing looks like something the dog’s been hiding under the porch. But that’s what four marriages, three divorces and a few kids out of wedlock can do to a person with strong moral convictions.
My, my but Huckabee, Cruz, Paul and the rest of them have certainly lowered the bar on sacrifice these days. Used to be you had to actually die a horrible death to become a martyr. Now you just have to be a hypocrite who ignores the law and refuses to do your job. Somehow I think Christianity wouldn’t have caught on so well without the cross. Sadly, the man on that cross preached tolerance, forgiveness, love and something about doing on to others… Makes you wonder how Kim would have felt if a Catholic County Clerk had refused to issue her that fourth marriage license.
Here’s the oath Kim took when she was elected. (Warning, this is Kentucky we’re talking about so it gets a little odd in the middle. Just pay attention to the beginning and the end):
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this Commonwealth, and be faithful and true to the Commonwealth of Kentucky so long as I continue a citizen thereof, and that I will faithfully execute, to the best of my ability, the office of County Clerk according to law; and I do further solemnly swear (or affirm) that since the adoption of the present Constitution, I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God.”
Now I don’t know anything about that dueling part, but she started by solemnly swearing to support the constitution and then ended with a “so help me God“. I think that makes giving out marriage licenses to people legally allowed to get married part of faithfully executing the office of the County Clerk. Anyone disagree? And if she isn’t willing to fulfill her duties then so help me God she can step down.
Funny thing in all of this… Kim says she’s a Democrat. Well as far as I’m concerned, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and uses religion to justify hate, then it’s a member of the GOP by default. I mean it. Really.

That particular task exceeds her mental (or as SHE puts it, religious) capacity. Apart from the fact that HER personal history is speckled, which is neither here nor there, as many persons now known as Saints were exceedingly unsaintly prior to embarking on their path to righteousness, she makes a valid point. Yes, she does! You can lead some horses to water but you can’t make them drink it. Homosexuals have the right to sexual freedom. Religious persons have the right to believe in whatever they believe in. Why should one be right-er than the other? Let’s say she was an angel before and after this SNAFU, would you feel differently about her stance? It does not matter who is religious and who is not. All “nations under God” are built on Christian principles. ALL. The laws are all based on the teachings of the Bible. The Bible itself makes reference to homosexuality. Which indicates that it has been a factor of human existence for hundreds of years, if nothing else. Whether we are religious or not! All sovereign nations EVERYWHERE in the world operate on laws which have their basis in whatever the predominant religions of the regions/cultures/individual nations are. ALL. Man believes in God because the human being has not been able to make the earth and seas and the sun to shine by day and the moon by night. It is LOGICAL conclusion. It probably why Desiderata says: “Be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.” We conceptualize God in our own minds, individually, whether we are taught to or not. How can we practice the laws of Christianity yet despise Christianity? Yet, that is of no importance. Here in the USA we still have the freedom to believe whatever we want to believe. So why is one freedom being despised for the sake of another? It is like I am an SDA and you are telling me I damn well have to eat pork whether I like it or not. So move her the he!! away from there and let someone else who is not conflicted do what is to be done! From a technical standpoint, she is completely within her rights. As a young girl, I attended girls’ boarding school where our freedom of religious denomination was respected. SDAs and others were exempted from eating foods that they habitually do not because of their interpretations and were occasionally allowed to attend services off campus. They were also allowed to “rest on the Sabbath”. Jehovah’s Witnesses were not forced to sing along, even though they did have to be present during daily devotion. Anglican services and Catholic Masses were held in Campus Chapel and there were Christian Fellowship Clubs that were acceptable to all religious groupings. It was a very strict and disciplined institution. If that could have been done there, then this should be an easy fix in the great USA. There needs to be a way to choose all the options when necessary. Everything is “hate crime”. I have not eaten pork since birth. Can I honestly say “I hate pork”? How can I hate pork if I have never eaten it?

I am just now reading the early findings of the DOJ on Hill’s emails. They don’t see anything wrong with having two email dealies and the techies say that her files were not wiped. Now I have some idea what these people are saying and I agree with the conclusions. However, there a hordes of folks out there who have diddly squat in the way of experience and knowledge of computers. Consequently this is all going to sound like Martian to them and they are going to fall head of tea kettle for whatever Faux Noose tells them. Here’s hoping that those with some understanding of bytes and those who could care less and are tired of hearing all about what doesn’t make a hill of beans to them join forces, so to speak. That would come very close to fair and balanced. Now I need to find some pie. Preferably apple.

The mammon-chasing publicity hound is now out of jail and has publicly stated she will not live up to the criteria established by the judge. Huckabee wants to go to jail in her place. Here are two people who will not abide by the Constitution. And one of them wants to be President wherein he would have to swear to uphold what he loathes! Both of them need a nice, quiet rubber room where they can practice their faith in private. Its that private part they find unfulfilling. Anything to get publicity!

I would love to share this, BUT–I am displeased with the reference to her appearance (something the dog dragged out from under the porch). Can progressives just stop it with the references to appearance? Stick to the issues. Judging women by their appearance (and lots of other places get outright sexist talking about how she looks) is not a progressive value.

There was an interview today on the radio (NPR I think) with some people who live in the town involved in all this hoohaw. These people were embarrassed by the whole thing. They claim their area is historically tolerant and has long had gay couples et al in the population without a problem. The only thing they can think of is that Ms. Davis is fixing to make herself into a martyred Christian Princess which won’t do anyone any good.

You make an excellent point, which reminds me how much responsibility should be borne by (1) the attention-desperate media who will give endless coverage to anything that brings in the advertising dollars, and (2) the millions, including myself, I’m sorry to say, who click endlessly on such junk, and encourage them to continue with very thing we curse them for doing…
When I stopped clicking on “news” about Kim Kardashian, she disappeared from my screen – and my consciousness. (Actually, she seems to have withdrawn from public life, which is the first thing for which I’ve ever actually admired her…)
And I think “showy miscreant” is a PERFECT description of Ms. Davis!

I am a Kentuckian who can’t bear the thought of living in another state because I would not be able to sleep at night not knowing that my mayor has sworn (or affirmed, as the case may be) that s/he has not fought a duel. Yes, only we get that security from our constitution, which was written in 1792. The big story that the punditry and social media posters all seem to be missing is that in a state so socially antiquated as still to make non-dueling a requirement for serving in local or state elected office, 119 out of 120 county clerks (yes we have far too damn many counties, which is another measure of our isolation) have agreed to issue same-sex marriage licenses. These 119 are the bold ones and should be noted, not the showy miscreant Ms. Davis.

I am a lesbian, I believe in gay marriage. I am just frustrated that we give so much attention to these kinds of stories. Why is it that around election time, some story like Kim Davis surfaces to distract and cloak the american citizen from issues that I think are more pertinent to our country and it’s future. We can’t build a better nation with the press feeding us stories about stupid people and their prejudice.
It doesn’t even matter because the gay marriage law is already put into place. Why do we even care what Kim Davis did. She set herself up for failure Are we going to beat a dead horse about people that don’t think that the law applies to him or her. It happens all the time.
I don’t think stores like this should be taken lightly. But, as educated people, we should know better.than to give more than ten minutes to someone like Kim. She is taking up too much space in our mind, and not paying rent.
We can put her on blast, but then move on to relevant and important matters.
I loved this commentary from the blogger, I have been thinking the same thing for years. So, it was a joy to read. I just despise CNN and all those pundits that jump on the bandwagon and make it an issue so that Papa Jon’s, Volkswagon, and T-mobile can sell more product and make larger profits.
Enough from me, I am moving on now. My ten minutes are up. Or, should I say 15?

The definition of illegitimate, for anyone wondering, is children born to a mother and a father who are not married to each other.
This does not mean that neither of them are married, just that they’re not married to each other. There are LOTS and LOTS of illegitimate children born to men who are married but not to the mother, or women who are married but not to the father. Just because some man chooses to legitimize those children by giving them his name because he’s married to their mamma, does not mean they were never illegitimate.

Your grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are atrocious. It is difficult for me to believe you were an attorney. In your legal argument you state that the children were not illegitimate, then you state that their adoption by her next husband “relegitimized” them. Your post is almost illegible, and your legal argument contradicts itself. I suggest you proofread your posts before putting them up.
For the rest of you: Do not be fooled into thinking that racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other prejudice is limited to one political party. Think of Ms. Davis as a “Southern Democrat”. Many southerners vote for democrats because they are impoverished and depend on federal assistance. They are still racist, homophobic, evangelical, and think they should have the right to legislate “morality” as determined by their Bible. Remember that desegregation was the issue that turned the south republican, as Lyndon Johnson predicted it would. Many southern democrats still favor increasing federal subsidies to the poor (the white poor anyway), raising the minimum wage, and providing healthcare to the poor, because they ARE the poor. They just don’t want the same necessities to be given to people of color (because they are lazy, dumb, and won’t work- that’s why they are poor).

Right on, ladies! A rose by any other name… Kim Davis is no liberal, that’s for sure! It is too bad to bring the children into the story, but I supposed this must not be news to the children or we wouldn’t have access to the news either. Glass houses… and all that. She should learn to put her stones down and realize her job is separate from her religion. It’s kind of like the difference between “freedom of religion” and “separation of church and state.” Both those conditions can exist. The whole point being that one religion should not be forced upon anyone else, which is exactly what Ms. Davis for not understanding. If her conscience bothered her, she should have left her job, not left the people who desired to be married out in the cold! Thanks for putting this idea in such enjoyable terms!

As a retired attorney I have a bone to pick with you. If you were going to discuss the legal issue of nonmarital versus marital children you should know what you’re talking about.
Kim Davises twins children were conceived in a marriage. Under the law those children to have a legal father. It doesn’t matter who the biological father is. It matters who the legal father is. And the fact that the divorce took place before the birth of the children does not make them nonmarital children.
Additionally these children were subsequently adopted which one could say relegitimized them all over again.
I intensely dislike the behavior displayed by Kim Davis and I also intensely dislike the behavior displayed here dragging two children – adult or not at this point – by attempting to impugn their legitimacy. Her children are not the issue and should not be brought into this issue. This is very inappropriate.
There are many things that Kim Davis can be criticized for due to her stance that she’s taken on gay marriage. Attacking her children is nothing that would ever be appropriate. If you have something to say about inappropriate concern with Ms. Davis then do it but when you don’t understand the law and you don’t understand what illegitimacy is it when you don’t understand the difference between marital and nonmarital children then for Gods sake leave the kids out of it. They may be adults, but this is not their fight.
And trying to act worse than Kim Davis doesn’t say much for people in this position does it?

Senator Lindsey Graham echoed what the judge said. We are a nation of laws. She can disagree with the law, but she took an oath to follow the law and if she is not prepared to do that, should resign. It is a slippery slope to let public officials choose which laws to obey.

I had to send you this one. Have you ever read “Margaret and Helen?” I really don’t know is actually the writer; but, he/she is a real talent … able to express a political thought in a humorous manner. Anyhow, I usually agre with what “Helen” writes … a way of exposing the inconsistencies in these “right wing” candidates.
John, you mentioned that you were upset that this woman was forced to issue a wedding license. Well, isn’t that the law? To me, it sounds like this lady has many issues that she has had a hard time dealing with in her life. She is a goverment official, and it’s her job. She shouldn’t take the job if it interferes with her religious beliefs. I’m sure there are many police officers in this country that disagree with some laws wen they make some arrests: but, it’s their job. I actually had a former student arrest me twice during the 1977 strike, apologizing as he cuffed me. I told him he was doing his job.

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual unseemliness – Lev. 15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev. 1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination – Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev. 24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Another astounding piece of writing to hit the universe! Have been wondering if Kentucky has an official state law defining marriage. Some states do and others don’t. If there is a law and it says nothing about male and female, then the judge is right and the rest of the crew in the license office can keep functioning without impediment. Also, there is a doctor who has written a rather longish letter on the subject of using scripture to back up one’s moral stance. He has found all those hate filled bits and used them in a truly good satirical way. For instance, slavery. Scripture says he can sell a family member into slavery. Subject of said sale: daughter. Wants to know how much he should ask for her on the block. Another example: scripture also approves the purchase of slaves but only from neighboring tribes. As translated, it means OK to purchase slaves from south of the border but not north. Why can’t he buy slaves from Canada. You get the picture!

Such a thoughtful article and a joy to read until the last paragraph. Must we respond to intolerance with equal or even greater intolerance? This isn’t a political (democrat vs. republican) issue. Must we always go back to our separate corners? In my opinion, you captured the true issue throughout the rest of your piece. Let’s stay in the place where we can continue to communicate with each other and not retreat to our corners.

Back from nine days in SC, dealing with my bro’s and sis-in-law’s stuff, and, boy, there’s a lot of it. Like nesting “Russian dolls” on steroids.
No time to look at “news” while I was there. But so interested to see all of this, now that I’m back. This clerk’s chutzpah in telling her staff what they should do, based on her personal “beliefs,” just makes me think “Taliban.”
Yeah; whatever I believe, you have to, too. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in an Emirates, without the flying perks…

My college-age sons are skeptical that you aren’t receiving help for these posts from your young nephew. It is difficult for them to accept that anyone your/(our) age can be as keenly astute, relevant and funny as you are! (Shame on them – I thought I raised them better.) All Hail Helen!!

Along the martyr theme… since when does being disagreed with equal persecution – or crucifixion? Goodness sake!
Christianity, obviously, has not been criminalized. She’s not in jail for being a Christian. She’s in jail for not doing the job she is paid to do. She is fully entitled to her religion, but if she’s not going to do her job then someone else should have it. She is entitled to resign and get a job that doesn’t violate her principles.

I don’t know why no one saw this coming; when businesses can mandate what their employees can have insured, i.e. contraceptives, and Catholic hospitals can deny services, i.e. contraceptives and medical abortions, then it follows that government officials can also deny services due to religious consciences. It’s the logical next step. The ball should have never been allowed to roll in the first place.

Oh, Lordy, I can’t even BEGIN to count the ways I love thee… Right up there, though, would be your comment about the potential fallout if a Catholic clerk refused to issue licenses to people seeking second marriages. (There is nothing “religious” about a marriage license in the first place – it’s a LEGAL CONTRACT, no different than what’s required to buy a car or sell a home. It always struck me as peculiar that it’s the only “contract” that has any gender restrictions sometimes thrown on it in the first place. Just try to refuse to allow two people to enter into any other contract, based on their genders. Not gonna happen.)
Saying this constitutes a “war on religion” is absolutely NO DIFFERENT than IS’ justification that they have the “right” to blow up ancient temples in Palmyra because they “promote idolatry.” I don’t hear anyone around here saying that’s perfectly fine; this bulldoody isn’t either.
Conscious objectors were allowed to perform other non-combat military duties during their time in the service. This woman could have volunteered to work in filing, or whatever. And she CERTAINLY had no “right” to instruct her staff to act on the basis of her “beliefs.” THAT is an abomination.

I have some small admiration for the county clerks who resigned their positions because of their religious objections to issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. They at least had the courage of their convictions AND respect for the law. Mrs. Davis has neither.

As a Christian, I wonder where these Looney Tunes characters (my apologies, Bugs) get the idea that that they are somehow following Christ. How can denying people their civil rights fit into the greatest commandment to love God and love neighbor? And then to claim “persecution”? These asshats are a boil on the bum of society and just need to get over themselves.
