Like a zoo, Fox News isn’t so scary once you realize the animals can’t get out of their cages

HELEN:

Margaret, I ventured into new territory today. I tuned into Fox News. It was kind of like going to the zoo… not so scary once you learn the animals can’t get out of their cages.

Just like when I go to a regular zoo, I didn’t know the names of all the animals at Fox, but I quickly learned the ones with opposable thumbs and the ability to reason were token Democrats who had, at some point, worked in the Clinton administration. The ones who liked to rattle their cages and screech at the visitors were the angry Republican hacks who seemed to be, for the first time, discovering the wonders of math.

I was surprised to see so many animals that I thought were long ago extinct. There was angry, old Lou Dobbs plodding around mumbling something about voter fraud and immigrants and Mike Huckabee being all folksy and jolly. And there was Oliver North, Liz Cheney, Haley Barbour and even Geraldo Rivera who now just goes by Geraldo like Madonna, Cher and Cavuto.

Over in a corner in a cage all by himself was the red-assed Karl Rove. Now that one scares me. When they called Ohio for Obama I heard he started flinging pooh and screaming about recounts and faulty polls.

I got a chance to spot the elusive big-footed Ann Coulter which was thrilling. Since her visit to The View, she only makes appearances when no other women are in the room. She seemed pretty at ease in the zoo. I guess that comes from all the time she spent collaborating with monkeys on those personal therapy projects she calls books. Ann seemed remarkably calm considering not only the election results but also the colossal failure that was her last book. Usually she’s shrill and fidgety but sitting there in the cage with Sean Hannity she seemed almost human.

There was a lovely exhibit of irrelevant talking parrots including Shepard Smith, Greg Gutfeld, Tucker Carlson and Mr. Van Susteren. I can’t keep all of their names straight but one of them suggested that the majority of voters are like abused housewives who voted to stay with their abuser. Most of them were squawking about Hurricane Sandy and that America was about to go over a cliff. As expected, they blamed the liberal media for handing the election to Obama while simultaneously chirping that Fox is the most watched news broadcast in the nation. I know. I know. It doesn’t make a hell of a lot of sense but it’s Fox News. It doesn’t have to. While I don’t think they understand the difference between Mexican-Americans and Cuban-Americans, they seem to think that any Republican politician with a name ending in O or Z will need to be on the bottom half of the ticket in 2016 if Republicans are to take the White House back.

Every zoo has its specialty and Fox is no exception. They have the largest collection of blonde, bulemic middle school girls posing as reporters with names like Megyn, Gretchen, Cheryl and Dana… many of them openly wept as the election results came in causing a river of mascara that got all over everything.

But the real treat came when I ran across that rare but ever-lovable snow beast, Sarah Palin. She’s a bit older but still very capable of smacking her lips while rattling off those non-sensical run-on sentences like “this election if it continues the way it is going will be a catastrophic setback to our economy and to any opportunity that we would have for Supreme Court justices to be appointed who would be strict adherents to the traditional interpretation of what our Constitution says which is a blueprint towards a more perfect union.” Isn’t she precious? Honestly, I was surprised to see that she had actually survived the end-of-days calamity known as the 2008 election.

Now Margaret, I don’t suggest that you visit the Fox Zoo. The lighting is bad, the air is thin, and reality is in short supply. They haven’t cleaned the cages in years so the bullshit is everywhere. Instead let me visit occasionally and send back reports. Trust me. It’s better that way.

Unlike the zoo, trips to Fox News should probably be few and far between. I mean it. Really.

MARGARET:

Thanks dear. I’ll stick to Ellen and leave the heavy lifting to you. But next time you are there do check and see what ever happened to Mrs. Van Susteren.

  11. I’ve enjoyed reading everybody’s comments, yes, even those with which I don’t agree entirely. But, I am with DeLane on these ladies!

I love these ladies too, Delane, but they’re too young to be my grammas. I would love to have them as housemates. I have never felt so enlighted by what anybody said about Fox News until Helen ventured into this stark cable-tv reality.

My partner has a block on it at home, so I never get to see it there. I only see it when I’m working out at the gym. I’ve watched it several times, and here’s what I’ve noticed:

First of all, hanging from the ceiling, are five HDTV’s. As I get my cardio workout, whether on the treadmill, the stationary bike, or the rowing machine, I look up at the broadcast images that seem to be most important to Atlanta viewers. Set #1 displays CNN – – this is not surprising, given that CNN is based in downtown Atlanta. The second channel is HGTV, a home improvement channel. If I were new to the area, I’d guess that the reason this channel is on is that I work out amidst a cross-section of Atlantans who not only love to redo their houses, but enjoy as much watching other people who redo houses. There’s a seemingly infinite number of ways to install a soap dish in one’s bathroom. Screen #3 is WSB Channel 2, from Atlanta. Folks there spend a lot of time covering traffic. How many people are watching the traffic reports while driving, I ask. Lucky #4 is Fox News. I guess their audience loves that trio in the morning. Steve and Brian are good-looking enough, for sure. But, without Miss America, Gretchen, in their midst, those two fellows would be about as outstanding as shoe salesmen sitting on a lumpy sofa.

I’m sure that the real audience draw in that show is Gretchen. She definitely appeals to a certain audience of men who probably dated, long ago, women as pretty or lovely as Gretchen. But she was Miss America, which means she is trained in the fine art of poise. Thus, no matter how much that older audience wishes she would uncross her legs for a half-second, Miss America training says, “uh-uh, that isn’t going to happen.”

Oh, and channel #5? It’s ESPN. Well, it is a gym, it attracts jocks. And, it doesn’t have much in the way of politics, except when a local politician, or the president, throws out the first ball of the game.

Margaret: I hope to catch up with you on Ellen. Ever since I started working afternoons, I don’t get to see her. The last time I saw it, former president Bill Clinton was her guest. I was sitting at the dentist’s office watching it, but not too closely – – I guess I was worrying how much the new crowns were going to cost me – – but I remembered that, at the end of the program, he stood up and danced with her! I can only think of a couple of presidents who wouldn’t have stood for such frivolity. Nixon, who, after he danced with his daughter at her rose-garden wedding, vowed he’d never be seen dancing on television again. And, FDR, for obvious reasons.

  12. Hi, Sidney – Roll eyes heavenward… It’s that slightly simpering, “Little Lord Fontleroy” posturing that is so familiar…

Here, let me write a post for him/her: “Well, I see you prefer to attack me personally, rather than addressing the very important questions I have so thoughtfully, and kindly, presented to you. Well, that just makes me ROFLMAO, and I feel so sorry for all of you, worshipping your Diety. But it doesn’t bother ME, because I am obviously so superior in intellect and human kindness than any one of you, that I wonder why I deign to bother to approach you. But… I’m basically a kind and generous soul (unlike any of you), and I, in my magnificence, am simply concerned about all of you. So I continue to put myself out – SOLELY for YOUR ultimate well-being – but am continually rebuffed. Oh, well… I am strong and self-righteous enough so tht your cruelty just doesn’t bother me whatsoever (LOL). However, I will keep posting as long as I am convinced that it is making at least two or three of you absolutely ballistic. Not everyone would be as compassionate as I am, but I am willing to sacrifice myself… Besides, I have nothing else to do this evening… Or in the foreseeable future.”

Or something like that. I kind of miss UAW… Although I still wish he’d change his avatar to something more contemporary. Jill Kelly maybe…?

Hey, Porch Dwellers! Be ornery! Love and be loved. Eat turkey, lentils, chard (delicious), pie, yogurt, bacon, Gummy Bears, Cool Whip, organic free-range tofu, or a Butterball… Whatever turns you on and guarantees you a wonderful day tomorrow. (I just realized that the gravy I’ve planned for tomorrow requires a “broth” that has to simmer for five hours, so that’s what I’m doing…)

It’s a pleasure to be amongst you all. God bless Margaret and Helen, and all of you… And Matthew!

  21. My theory about the haters: the rise of the internet and cable news has emboldened the haters to be more upfront about their bigotry. They listen to the things Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck say, and they think “if he can say that, then so can I.” There is no conspiracy theory too ridiculous, no epithet so vile, that they don’t feel they now have carte blanche to use them. The ability to post anonymously in also emboldens those without scruples or self restraint to express their suppressed feelings of resentment and animosity. We cherish free speech, and I don’t know what can be done about this, but it is very disturbing. To a certain extent both sides are guilty, but to my mind the right is much more vitriolic. (I’m sure some will disagree, but that’s my opinion.)

  23. Hi Congenial Gang,

As usual, the election postmortem continues with the gloating and sour grapes. Throw in a tacky little sex scandal between a randy old fart and an over-the hill bimbo starved for attention as she approaches menopausal oblivion, and those topics should make for some lively discussions around the Thanksgiving table this year.

However, if it should get too contentions, I would like to recommend a fascinating article from the November issue of Scientific American Magazine by George Musser entitled “Quantum Physics – A New Enlightenment”, “Quantum theory once seemed like the last nail in the coffin of pure reason. Now it’s looking like its savior; on an American Election season.” You can Google it and read the entire piece if you are interested. The reference to the “Prisoner’s Dilemma” should give everyone something to think about without being too partisan and controversial.

We have plenty to be thankful for this year!!!!! Our Democracy prevailed, sort of, and President Obama was re-elected for another four years. I really think we will get things done now!

We will be going to our traditional “Calabash Family” Thanksgiving dinner. This has been going on for YEARS at the home of dear friends with their outdoor roofed barbeque. They do a whole pig on a spit, snout and all, and a number of turkeys. There are 40-50 of us and we all have our assigned dishes to bring. Mine are my renowned cheesecakes. Immediately after dinner is served in the late afternoon, the bountiful leftovers are bundled up and several of the men take them to a shelter. A great time is had by all!

With that, I wish each one of the M&H Family a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Aloha! 🙂 Namaste. Shalom. Saalam. Peace.

I hear the parrot heads talking the fluff of that gas bag, Rush Limbaugh, and wonder that they don’t seem able to think for themselves or read any history. I believe for many of them the idea that a black man could be president is so outside of their white insulated beliefs they will say anything to distort, block, or otherwise lend support for the betterment of the country as a whole. We are in for a rough ride in our once proud country. All around us the pedestals of value, pride and good will have been eroded by the divisive views that come through at Fox. I too tuned in election eve to listen a few minutes when the blade was dropping on the Mitt bus. Quite surprised there was no one choking on their predictions.

Their neighbors, friends and churches all believe the same things that they do. They know, I mean they REALLY KNOW, that Obama is a corrupt Kenyan, Marxist commie, coming to take their guns and freedoms. But the truth is……they just don’t know the truth. And if you run across them debating among themselves online and poke a little reality into the conversation they just let into you with insults, curses, predictions and their sincerest wishes that you drop dead. It’s kind of scarey, isn’t it?
And the GOP and their operatives fed these lies to their base for the SOLE purpose of getting this segment of the population to vote for THEM. They just jammed so many lies and bullshite down their little fearful throats, that many of the actual republican politicians and spokespeople believed it too.
Now, one thing this election cleared up for me, and I must say I was really concerned about this, was, JUST HOW MANY OF THESE NUTBALLS were out there and ready vote republican? And the answer was, thankfully……..not enough.

I’m not sure even looking at the disconnect certain folks who call themselves Christians have even matters here. Especially lately, especially about this President.
Some words about the hating thingy from one of my favorite philosophers, Jose Ortega y Gasset from his
    Meditations on Quixote:

“We are definitely more willing to hand over our free will to a rigid moral attitude than to keep our judgment always open, ready for the desirable reform and correction. One might say that we embrace moral imperative like a weapon in order to simplify life for ourselves by destroying immense portions of the globe…

No product of resentment can evoke our sympathy. Rancor emanates from a sense of inferiority. It is the imaginary suppression of the person whom we cannot actually suppress by our own efforts. The one towards whom we feel resentment bears in our imagination the livid semblance of a corpse:in our minds we have killed him, annihilated him. Later, when we find him actually sound and unconcerned in reality, he seems to us a refractory corpse, stronger than ourselves, whose very existence is an embodiment of mockery, of disdain towards our weakness.

A wiser course than this anticipatory killing of his enemy by the resentful individual consists in falling under the influence of a moral dogma, so that, intoxicated by a certain heroic fiction, we come to believe that the enemy is utterly mistaken and completely in the wrong ”

Ortega goes on to make a case for truly understanding an enemy and asserts that “We should be on our guard against rigidity, the traditional livery of hypocrisy”

AND they all claim to be so religious, just like all the Obama haters I know. What is it about hating Obama that these “Christians” think is all right? I thought as Christians, we were supposed to love everyone. I sure didn’t want Romney to be my president, but I didn’t hate him! Did I miss something along the way? The federal government, through a non-partisan agency should, own, approve and test all voting machines. They should have a website with full transparency were all Americans can go and research and ask questions until their hearts content.
Until that happens, oopsie……our machine must of malfunctioned when it flipped your vote to the GOP canidate, will be the “law” of the land. And it’s not right. It’s just not right.

Still thinking that’s why FL dragged their feet so long, if Rove COULD have kept it close then FL would have amazingly flipped for Mitt just like they did for W with the same song and dance just to generate noise. And there would have been the yapping about late counties, etc. AND we might have accepted it because it HAPPENED BEFORE and even though the mathematics of probability are against it, humans really like precedent-and very few are acquainted with probability theory. Thus lotteries continue to make money! 🙂

The letter attributed to anonoymous, I’m not so sure about. It doesn’t sound like them. It is not written in the same style as so many other letter that anonymous has released in the past.
Now the ORCA program, run by the Romney people had a lot of problems that THEY caused themselves, such as expecting their supporters to print off their home printers over 60 pages of info. Now their supporters were unable log on, but that was also directly attributed to wrong info given out and then having all phone calls go unanswered, that could of corrected the problem.
Maybe anonymous did have something to do with ORCA, which had nothing to do with counting votes, but was the Romney GOTV ground game. I love anonymous, and I believe that they do great things, and if they did manage to stop Rove from stealing votes, we should be getting the scoop soon. Also, has anyone else noticed the utter and total disappearance from the scene of the former Republican candidate for President…? (Not that this development makes me unhappy, I hasten to add!!) What was his name…? “Gloves”, or something like that…? Kind of confirms the gut feeling I had all along that he never wanted to do it, at all, in the first place…

Thank heavens for the utter brilliance and dedication of the OFA campaign managers, supporters, and volunteers!! THEY certainly haven’t disappeared, nor are they likely to. Nor are the rest of us!

Looking at this Petraeus stuff, and my husband is watching the Fox, god love (and help) him, and i think this is all just “Fuck me? Well, no… Fuck YOU!” Petreaus got caught with his pants down, and his brain was in those pants for a few moments, and he ain’t going down easy. This is now a battle between the Prez and a general… Remember that Petraeus is a Republican.

If I ever have to listen to the Krauthammer again, I may have to throw up.

Petraeus knew he was boffing someone he shouldn’t have been boffing. (Oh, well, who knows what his personal life is like? I’m kind of with Holly on this, I must say… How can she forgive him for this…?) Petraeus knew that THEY knew, and now they’ve got him on the witness stand, and he’s going to save his own hiney. He’s going to blame everyone else.

This battle is just beginning. So much for “winning.” Thank the Universe that we don’t have to hear from Romney again. He’s evidently disappeared totally from his website. Knew he always hated doing this.

However, this place and several people she knew here were very special to her. Grandma Katie passed away earlier this month. You may remember her for her characteristically smart posts, slightly plagued by typing issues from her stroke and her aging computer. She was special to me. I am better for having known her. She was in her early 80’s but still her passing was somewhat unexpected and swift according to her son. Fortunately it happened after a nice phone conversation with a family member and some ice cream.

When they first moved to El Paso she joked about although she couldn’t see Russia from her front porch she could see Mexico on her way to work. To her amazement most of her church members wish that El Paso could be annexed by New Mexico! The county she lives in is the only, from what she’s heard, Democrat county in Texas.
I thought that when people in Texas starting talking about seceding we should let them, then move the Democrats out of there to make room for any Republicans who wanted to move in.

Now…don’t think for a minute that the republicans are going to change anything EXCEPT their bullshit propaganda. The ONLY thing they learned from this election……is that they MUST do a better job keeping dems from voting and they really have to become much better liars to many more people.
They are backed into a corner of their own making, and are flailing desperately to survive as a party. They have learned nothing.
Had they been able to steal this election, they would be licking their chops just thinking about the many ways they would dismantle our social safety net and our way of life and handing this country over to the 1% on a silver platter.

That would be Pakistan, or Afghanistan, or Oldwhitemenistan, or any of a number of countries we are trying to “support”…

I just keep thinking of the French revolution (inspired by us, I think I can correctly add). These “others” are not going away, and we have to figure out a way to deal with them. I think President Obama knows this, and he’s being stronger and stronger. Absolutely like that.

But realizing the turn out of Dems this election and last why would there be no demand for left wing radio??? It is said for every 1000 hours of Conservative talk radio there is 100 hours of liberal talk radio. I would not be surprised if they are working to eliminate the left wing stations along with NPR. Are they stacking the deck the SOBs.

  120. Has anybody noticed if their local liberal radio talk show channel has changed programming? I usually listen to Keep Hope Alive (Jesse Jackson) on Sunday mornings, but today as well as yesterday when Ring Of Fire radio (Mike P, Bobby Kennedy) was usually on, the programming was all sports, all day. Its still sports programming as I type. It would usually be re-runs of the weeks liberal radio shows on the weekends.

I know Clear Channel owns the channel I listen to. I’m wondering if they are retaliating for Obama’s win and cutting back on liberal show hosts? I’m anxious to hear if the normal weekly programming with Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann and Ed Schutlz, et al remains the same.

  130. Hi Congenial Gang,

    My opinion and observations:

There is nothing quite so OVER as a national election when it’s OVER. Well, maybe Christmas, after all the shopping, wrapping, cooking, cleaning, decorating and putting up with cranky relatives for the day and then the clean up. And of course the THUD of taking down and dismantling the tree to say nothing of deciding what to do with the monstrous ‘authentic object d’art’ Cousin Jake proudly brought us from Las Vegas.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the re-election of President Obama. I have thought right along that he is a fine man with the best interests of the whole country at heart. Besides that, he is highly intelligent and now has four years of experience under his belt in trying to “work with” the Republicans. He is no longer naïve about that, I’m sure.

The doom and gloom boys are already out in full force as if their viewpoint has ever solved any problems. Since President Obama no longer has to be concerned about re-election, he can break out the executive order pen as soon as the GOP starts dragging their feet (knuckles?) again. He can now concentrate his energies on getting the job done without the Hanging of the Crepe from the Right.

I only wish we had been able to pick up a few more House seats. It is still going to be near impossible trying to get even a little cooperation from that bunch. We have progressed a long way though and I have noticed that popular vote-wise, many of the former solidly red states are gradually turning toward shades of purple. That’s a good sign.

I do feel however that we should not let our guard down. And I don’t mean wasting time going off half-cocked on paranoid conspiracy theories. That’s the Right-wing’s specialty. We do know for sure now that the 1% money people are livid! Their very ‘raison d’etre’ is their money with the power and influence they expected it would buy. All those billions down the drain. For those whose entire identity is wrapped up in their net worth, it must truly be panic time. With the drop in the stock market since Election Day, I think we saw some of them scurrying to stash assets in Switzerland and the Caymans quick, quick before the Bush tax cuts expire, unless they think they can find a way to con President Obama into extending them. He’s not likely to fall for it this time around.

It has been my experience in my rather long life that trying to ‘reason’ with deeply ingrained philosophical, ideological and religious convictions is an exercise in futility as well as a waste of time. No amount of ‘clips’ and ‘proof’ from the expert evidence of metonymic rhetoric on Fox or in the social media is likely to change anyone’s perspective. Certainly not mine!

I don’t have much faith in fraudulent, scheming and weak historical injustices perpetuated because of traditional irredentist claims. It boils down to this: all people prefer to live rather than to die; to spend their days in a modicum of comfort rather than pain and deprivation. That requires a few basic necessities. In civilized society it is called humanity caring for humanity.

Aloha! 🙂 Namaste. Shalom. Saalam. Peace.

  142. I have been making more than just “extra income” from an invention I’ve been peddling to the conspiracy theorists.
They are the antecedents of the torch carriers in Young Frankenstien, an historical documentary concerning a period of time of the gop.

It was easily determined that they were experiencing interference in receiving clear signals from Mars while wearing their Reynold’s Wrap hats.
I watched one of them and took note of the facial twitches, grunts, angrily puzzled expression and sweat.
I then realized that they were suffering from OCD which manifests itself in neurotically blaming President Obama for everything that has ever occurred in the 6,000 years of their world’s history.
What I did was asked one of them for permission to inspect one of their “Truth Caps”.
I used oven mitts to avoid any infection.
I had lined this cap with pennies and asked to CTer to put it back on.
He immediately wore a wide smile with even more facial tics.
I knew I had something so, I went to the bank and bought rolls of pennies.
I then went around to all the “myth robme” rallies and set up a stand.
I sold these rolls of pennies to them @ 2 rools for $3.00.
I then took their caps and lined them with pennies.
I ekplained to them that the copper in the pennies would enable them to pick up clear signals from Pluto with the explanation that that was where the actual headquarters were for the campaign.
I made so much more money than I expected as, when one of them told another, it spread like wildfire, almost as fast as unfounded rumors in that crowd.
Now, I did have to wear shin pads during these events to protect my legs from the vast forest of constantly jerking knees.
I realized early on that I can be prepared to make a vast fortune during the next election cycle so, I have rented warehouses around the country, mostly in the red(neck( states.
I will be acquiring bridges and swampland and stiocking them in these warehouses.
I expect to be able to retire after raking in all that easy money.

The whole thing is long and complicated and would try the patience of even those who were interested.
Also- I realize looking at how I said that I have left the appearance that the turning-red here thing was fully on the doorsteps of the Ds. As much as I think the failure of the state Ds to understand what was going on contributed considerably to the Native population shifting away from the party, I also think the standard and accepted notion that the oil boom changed demographics enough to shift us played a part, though not nearly as much as many think.
    Short story:
Against the backdrop of multiple landmark settlements in land, subsistence rights, and the like coupled with the federal government’s abandonment of assimilation policies (starting under Nixon almost unbelievably!) Ds here missed the primary difference Alaska Natives had/have with traditionally D civil rights issues :
    from section 1.3-
“In contrast to the civil rights movement of American blacks, Native Americans sought to mitigate the injustices perpetrated against them mainly by pursuing political self-determination, in the form of tribal self-rule.”
    http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/civil-rights/
and through inattention and oversight lost the larger Native community. It is a distinction which eludes Ds in large numbers here yet.
The *saving* or *helping* was in trying to apply civil rights notions of what to do for disadvantaged persons as individuals while ignoring the group’s intention to stay whole. There is some similarity here to the beginning-to-be-understood downside of colorblind polices elsewhere but I would have to think more on how much…
It is not to say that the community became Rs though. The Rs are no friend of the community but Rs like Senator Stevens and Senator Murkowski have filled in plenty of gaps the State will not for Native communities and have thus become the enemy-we-know.
Personally, I am mixed race, with a foot in 2 worlds, both of which are full of the good, bad, and the ugly. For me, the Ds still present a better chance for resolution of age old problems but locally an awful lot of them are pretty clueless.

Mageen- I looked up the Murray Energy guy and read his lil prayer and all. Whoa! what a doof!
What’s up with rich -job-providers who blame the President, any President, for shifts in the whole market? If people are relying more on natural gas, where was he in cutting himself into that market? Isn’t that what the so-called smart ones do?

Even though Romney bashed women, the middle class, gays, the military, latinos and all immigrants, blacks, all minorities, basically everyone except for rich, white men, and belonged to an anti-woman cult, and even though some republican senatorial candidates thumbed their noses up to rape (and would have changed the laws to make it a non-crime if they could have), these oh-so-smart republicans cannot understand why so many in the above-mentioned bashed groups didn’t vote for Romney and are convinced it’s my fault. Oh well, no tears shed here. I went out to breakfast with one of my Canadian friends yesterday and people in the cafe heard us talking. They were complete strangers, but came over to shake my hand. We should also realize everything we do through the internet or electronically on our phones is being archived. There is no privacy anymore. None. The Military/NSA is building a very large facility in Utah that is where the data will all be archived. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/03/ff_nsadatacenter/all/

When you call your bank and enter the account and pin # into the phone, all that data is being archived. The entire string of numbers. People should also realize, all our calls are also being recorded. So when you tell a family member where the house key is hidden or what the combination on a lock is or something personal about your life, just remember that info is out there to be resurrected whenever you become a target of investigation. All it will take is a breach of that information by some rogue employee or hacker to cause some real security issues for all of us.

1984 is here. I don’t much like this future. The younger generations don’t seem to care though. They tell everything they do as though they’re a Kardashian, only without the million dollar contracts. There is no anonymous behavior anymore. When we know we are being watched, we act different. But its being sold as its for our own safety and welfare. People think reality shows are just on TV. We are all in a reality show now. Some of the internet companies are now offering home monitoring. Do people think those cams are off just because they think they turned them off when they came home? How will you know they’re really off?

They were looking at something ahead of them. Then one opened the door and said to me, the guy up on the corner looks like he has a rifle. By the time I looked he was gone.

They followed him in their car. Later I saw them parking in front of the bldg I live in. They told me they’d called the authorities. Apparently, other people had already called him in when he was crossing the bridge, about 30 blocks from where we saw him. We don’t know what he had in his rifle case, but it sure caused concern.

How Does the Federal Government Create a Budget?
There are five key steps in the federal budget process:

Step 1: The President submits a budget request to Congress

Step 2: The House and Senate pass budget resolutions

Step 3: House and Senate Appropriations subcommittee

    “markup” appropriations bills

Step 4: The House and Senate vote on appropriations

    bills and reconcile differences

Step 5: The President signs each appropriations bill

    and the budget becomes law

‘The fact that the Romney campaign spent more than $100 million on services from political consulting firms close to his family senior staff — services that we imagine were not vetted through a rigorous contracting process — couldn’t have anything to do with this and other failures, could it? Thank goodness the Republicans nominated a savvy businessman with so much private sector management experience to run this thing. Just imagine how badly it would’ve gone under the direction of some hippie community organizer!

It’s funny that Bush never seems to have to take the credit or the blame for anything, since he and his administration blamed Clinton for eight year. Geez.

No, not really, not Mr Reid’s “fault”
More like Mr Reid’s strategy to stay out of a worse quagmire than already existed and to keep things moving along without the likely showdown some of the Rs like Paul Rand wanted.
That is not a bad thing in and of itself.
Contrary to what people have been saying this country has been this divided many times before- some of these strategies have kept us putting along on idle while we duke it out.
The spin from all over the map on the lack of a budget resolution needs to be dumped and we, us everyday people, need to learn more about the whole budget dealie works, legally and strategywise.
We do ourselves no favors by comparing it all to household budgets, personal checking accounts and all the horsepunky that is rolling around.

Small light in the mess is that
Mr Obama got almost 42% of the vote here this time, up from 38% in 2008 when our worst governor ever was the VP candidate on the other ticket .

Bad news is we lost our Bipartisan Working Group majority in the State Senate.( My state Senator was the only Rep or Sen in the whole state who did not have to run after redistricting and he’s a great guy.)
That is REALLY bad news for many, many reasons. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
Our local races went ok- they were in October. We are in decent shape here in my blueish purple part of Alaska . Sometimes I am extra glad we are a home rule state ( constitutionally conferred home rule- totally anti Dillon’s rule ) and that I live in a unified home rule borough. We cannot afford to ignore state politics but we can do more to take care of ourselves than most or all other places without state top down management.

As best as I can see the Ds have been avoiding dealing with what would be necessary reconciliation legislation to get a budget resolution passed. Some even believe they would never be able to agree on reconciliation language to get started on it.
See starting around p 21 (document page, not pdf page ) about how that has been used for deficit reduction- NOT the best way to go about it with the fundamental disagreements between current R and D . Somewhere in there it talks about sequestration , which we will be facing in upcoming new year after the hoobobby crap that super committee pulled this last year in not working anything out together.
The 1974 law setting up the requirement for a budget resolution really doesn’t require one- it simply disallows certain Congressional action until there is one.

    UAW-
“Prior to 1974, Congress had no formal process for establishing a coherent budget. When newly-elected President Richard Nixon began to refuse to spend funds that the Congress had allocated, Congress needed a more formal means by which to challenge him. The Congressional Budget Act created the Congressional Budget Office and directed more control of the budget to CBO and away from the President’s Office of Management and the Budget. The Act passed easily as the administration was embroiled in the Watergate scandal and unwilling to provoke Congress”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_budget_process#Budget_resolution
See also the section on budget resolution at that link

Very important information about what the Congressional budget dealie really is is there
Binds Congress to a process but is actually not a mandatory act.
Both sides have been playing games about it or trying to avoid playing games with it for quite awhile now- very partisan stuff going on . Rs really being snots about it and twisting the issues, Ds circling wagons and trying to keep from getting bound up in required resolution process which is a frickin mess- the process , as you can see from first article, is fine and dandy if people are really trying to sort out a real budget resolution but not if they are not.
Having no budget resolution is neither here nor there in many ways- regardless of what Rs are saying. It grows out of the idea that it lends coherence to a vast project but appropriations don’t need a budget to happen.
So- it is really not what Rs are saying and some not what the Ds are saying and I suggest we have more important crap to deal with than the poo flinging this whole thing has engendered.

Short answer, Mr Reid has not “passed” a budget. Longer answer- it is all much more complicated than that and he doesn’t have to anyway.

My dad worked in the silver mines in Virginia City, Nevada as a young man. He told us that in order to keep the scorpions from stinging them at night they would pull their beds away from the wall, put the legs of the bed in cans of kerosene and then carefully tuck their bedding in tightly when they got into bed. That way even though the scorpions could crawl up the wall they couldn’t crawl across the ceiling to drop on them or climb up from the floor while they were sleeping. I think I’ll be mentally doing the same as we see what the scorpions in our political system try to pull off.

  254. Either we are “salt” and “light” by the grace of God, or we are willfully disobeying the One who saved us for such a time as this.

in Philippians 2:15, the apostle Paul says, “Believers, you are to shine as light in the world”. The Greek word used here is very similar to the word for the beacon that a lighthouse emits. That beacon is bright and unmistakable in its purpose. It warns of danger. It directs to safe harbor. It provides hope for those who have lost hope. Everyday we are surrounded by people groping around in the darkness, separated from the God who loves them. God uses His children, like beacons from a lighthouse, to show the way to Him.
Either we are “salt” and “light” by the grace of God, or we are willfully disobeying the One who saved us for such a time as this. If we are being “salt” and “light” then we can expect fruit from our faithfulness. If we are not being salt and light, then the New Year is a perfect time to repent and let God have your best for His glory. This is our commission and in His strength we will experience this reality.

They thought they had righteousness on their side. They prayed and prayed because surely god would hear their prayers. And god did hear their prayers. And he answered their prayers. Just think of what that money could have done – scholarships, medical research, food for hungry children, jobs training, the list is long. Instead, all that money was squandered because of the hubris of a few men.

Your media lied to you and your ok with that? The repubs threw you under the bus in 2010. And you know why? Because they wanted to regain power. They don’t give a shit about this country or it’s people. They blocked everything this president tried to do. They lied about voter fraud, they spend billions in propaganda. They tried to buy this election. And they failed. We are not a rightwing country. When everybody gets to the polls they vote for liberal ideas, only when there is a small turnout like in 2010 can you win elections. The conservative mindset is in their genes. It seems the only times I’ve seen the conservative minds really express happiness is when they’ve stomped on their many enemies. As I’d mentioned earlier, the overly religious people I’ve worked with saw evil everywhere except in the mirror. They were also quick to play the victim role. They actually are what they attest to most being against but are to blind to see it. Very scary people. I find myself becoming more cautious as I grow older but conservative, at least how it comes off in todays world, never.

  270. Somewhere on M&H someone suggested a book written awhile ago that explains the conservative mindset. I”ve heard of it but I still prefer The True Believer written by Eric Hoffer. That one is scary, too. Evidently conservatives, whether corporate captain or cobbler, believe that the sole right to govern everyone else lies in their DNA, hence they are as close to an anointed Divine Right Monarch as you can come. That anyone else dare to think and do otherwise is a mortal threat to their existence and needs to be anywhere from suppressed to wiped out. Ah! But the intrigues in such a bunch. Think of the court of Henry VIII of England where he had darn near everybody beheaded, including the innocent. They have the abilty to wipe each other out.

And BTW, ya, you betcha, the palin’s name is already being bandied about for 2016…..the palin and Rick Perry……..Hayzoos Fred !!! Really, Baggers, Really ??? Actually, maybe they need Hayzoos Fred on the ticket next time. They might get a few more votes.

And PLEASE Anonymous, the hands reached out to the Repubs in 2008 and Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and the other Tea Party leaders bit those hands and said all they cared about was making Obama a one term president. They would obstruct and filibuster everything and to hell with the American people. Mitch McConnell with his same ole, same ole crap, clearly stated his position on Tues night. The Dems have to compromise, but there will be no compromising from him as minority leader in the Senate. Boehner is singing a little different tune because he sees the writing on the wall and he is still gets to be Speaker of the house but poor Mitch didn’t get to be the high honcho muchy muck in the Senate and he is pissed about that. Their olive branches are rotten and full of holes.

The sound machine on the right has now turned the Tea Party and the baggers into poor put upon souls who wanted nothing more than to compromise…….bull crap to that. Most of the american people are not stupid enough to believe the blather. It was blatantly obvious with this election. Women are not stupid, ethnics are not stupid, Seniors are not stupid, happy white men are not stupid.

Get a clue: since 2009, the Tea Party has obstructed in the House and filibustered in the Senate, every bill that would have sped up the economic recovery. Days before the election they filibustered a bill in the Senate that would have create more jobs for Veterans. What is it you people don’t understand about that ? The congress makes the laws, the House of Representatives control the money. They refused more money for foreign security and when our diplomat was killed they pointed the finger at the President. I am pointing “THE FINGER” back at the Tea Party. You are responsible because of your irresponsibility. The economic growth is slow and job creation is slow because of Tea party irresponsibility. It is all just a game for those of you on the right.

What is it that you people don’t understand about women not wanting angry old white men crawling up their vaginas? What is it you don’t understand about women not wanting RAPE to be called, “God’s will ” and a RAPE BABY a gift? what is it you don’t understand about a woman being told, “you are going to die because we don’t allow any kind of abortion”. What is it that you do not understand about caring for the child once you insist that it be required for a rape victim to carry and deliver that child?

What is it you don’t understand about watching your job go to China? What is it you don’t understand about equality in the workplace, equal pay for equal jobs? What is it you don’t understand about Seniors getting back in the form of Social Security, the money they paid all of their working lives into Social Security. What is it you people don’t understand about affordable healthcare for all of our citizens? What is it you people don’t understand about our young people needing affordable college loans? What is it you people don’t understand about every one of our ancestors being immigrants?

What is it you people don’t understand about WE THE PEOPLE ? Until you do, you will fail and thus our country will fail.

  274. Hi, Terry – I, too, got a good laugh out of M&H’s post this morning… But a caged scorpion is still a scorpion – and a THREATENED scorpion in a cage is the most dangerous of all. It is well-founded “folk wisdom” that the most dangerous, and impossible to control, kind of dog is a “fear biter.”

Evidently Karl Rove was “interviewed” on Fox this morning, and insisted, “This thing was won.”

This is not the statement of someone who has just realized he’s lost a “good fight”, and is willing to come out and shake hands over it. This is someone who, I would guess, feels his very identity (to say nothing of his livelihood, his position, his influence, and his reputation) has been sullied and is being mocked, even by those who believed in him and gave him their confidence and their cash. Human beings cannot tolerate this; this is not an issue of political positions; it’s a matter of self-identity. (Most murders in prisons are committed by someone who feels he’s been dissed by a fellow prisoner.) And I’m pretty sure that close to half the country feels this way. They will not go easily – nor, frankly, can we reasonably expect them to. WE wouldn’t!

Until progressives (like myself) really understand that the underlying fears and concerns of conservatives are quite genuine – and, yes, legitimate – in their eyes, we will not be able to work with them, and they will remain a real threat to all of us. We can certainly have a good laugh among ourselves, but we cannot just dismiss them with scorn, as Romney so unwisely dismissed the forty-seven percent. We all saw the outrage that followed that, and people were quite justified in feeling that outrage. That’s my very point: People can’t stand to be dismissed and scorned, and told they have no value. Please don’t think I’m suggesting that we need to “accept” the conservative point of view; I certainly do not. We would, however, be damned well advised to remember that they, like all of us, are fighting for their very lives.

Don’t mean to throw a wet blanket on the good times, and I love every word that comes out of M&H’s mouths. But we’re really all in the same cage, whether we like it or not. And some of us are scorpions.

  322. Another boffo post, Helen! And good on you for venturing into the Fox News echo chamber on election night . . . pathos can be so entertaining, can’t it?

If you decide to ever do that again, here’s some advice for you — approach it as you would any other “soap opera”. After all, that’s what it is . . . a bunch of “recurring characters”; a collection of complicated and outlandish story lines that never seem to resolve themselves; some very, very bad acting; and over-use of dramatic techniques such as anger, confrontation and imaginary scary events.

  323. I was watching Fox News when they called Ohio for Obama. It was hilarious. The lady who’s name I didn’t know, asked “What about Florida, don’t we have to wait?” Then the guy next to her, who apparently believes in math, had to tell her it was over, Obama had won. She and Carl Rove refused to believe it, so she stormed down to the special room in the basement that they have for people who believe in math. They assured her there was not enough votes even in the world of Fox News to make a difference.

  326. They have a fairly slim hold on reality, it seems.

Both candidates raised close to a billion dollars.

The difference between those donation amounts, is stark; the bulk of Romney’s money came from super PAC’s and big donors. The bulk of Obama’s money came from individual donors, most giving less than $200.

Only the math-challenged could ignore the dynamics of that single factor when translated into votes.
