We lost your Grandpa this year and suddenly everyone wants to be together for the holidays. Well isn’t that just the shit. I hope you all learned your lesson. Treasure your family while they are still here – not after they are gone. Life is a series of lessons. Pay attention.
Now about Thanksgiving… Your Aunt Trudy thinks that just because Thanksgiving dinner is at her house this year, I am not in charge. Well bless her heart. Here are the rules:
- This year Cloe’s jello crap is fine by me. Trudy’s gravy is always a little thin for my taste. A little jello might thicken it up a bit.
- I respect the cook, but 99% of us respect good food even more. I reserve the right to occupy the kitchen and add an extra stick or two of butter to any dish that doesn’t meet with my satisfaction. And for the record, pepper spray belongs in the kitchen not on college campuses.
- I respect the debate, but I reserve the right to grab a bar of soap if I hear Bill O’Reilly nonsense coming out of your mouth.
- You can never have enough paprika in the kitchen.
- Mary and Rhonda, feel free to bring the children and the pets. Harvey hasn’t let Trudy buy new furniture since 1978. No one will notice an extra stain or two.
- Trudy – if I have told you once, I have told you a hundred times – add the bacon and the grease. Everything tastes better cooked in bacon grease.
- Jonathan. Your Republicans have made fools enough of themselves already. Don’t add to the idiot parade by claiming you have liked Newt all along. You liked Michele until Perry came along. You liked Perry until he said oops. And you liked Cain until he groped your wife. It’s just a matter of time until Newt steps in it too. For goodness sakes, his shoes still stink from the last time he ran. Like it or not honey, Romney is taking you to the Prom.
- Nobody does deviled eggs correctly. You have to use vinegar.
- Nobody does Republican presidential debates correctly. You have to use your brain.
- Marshall. Your children can’t sing. There I said it and I am not taking it back.
- Bacon. Trudy, you just have to trust me on this. Bacon.

And to be clear on Joe, He has in the past brought up interesting perspectives. While I considered almost all of them to be flawed at some level, I saw points of merit worthy of discussion. The fact he would not engage his own topics at any level I consider to be lost opportunity for learning and conversation on both sides. And yes at the time found that frustrating when I considered it purposeful. Now I am certain it is more to lack of depth and insight than anything else.

Well I don’t expect you to come down on one of your own. One thing that is a defining characteristic of Liberals is that they defend their own without any boundaries or limitations. At least we can agree he is here to be disruptive, and little else.
As far as there being no Liberal party, we agree to disagree. I am a fiscal conservative. This means I live by logic, I live by numbers, I live by personal responsibility. I believe in hard love, I believe in “true” compassion. I don’t do what feels right, I do what I know to be right. I don’t give people what they want, I give people what they need.
Despite what Liberals would have you believe, fiscal conservatives probably think about the other guy more than almost anyone else. We are big picture people. We support social programs with one caveat, you pay for it. Assistance at any level always creates dependency at some level. If you are going to offer help, it needs to be done in a sustainable way. To do otherwise is cruel.
Liberals by my measure do what my Great Uncle taught me never to do. My Uncle always taught me to live within my means, and help with what I could. Take care of my own house first, and help with what was left over, but never more than what you had.
Liberals are help first, no matter what, and figure all the details later, if ever. I cannot live this way, nor can our country continue to operate this way. Fiscally, they is so little difference I have no issue lumping you all into one box because these policies all take us to the same place, insolvency.

Juneau Joe, I have defended what you are doing , and I am not accusing you of lying, but your comments about the war are lies of ignorance and misconceptions.
You rightly say that Obama followed Bush’s time line, but to give Obama special credit for ending a war is misleading without sharing the praise with Bush. Obama had a faster deadline, but he learned it was not realistic.
To write “it took President Obama to end it” is a bald faced lie because Obama was following the policy of a previous administration. If Bush were still president there is little to show that he would not have followed his own time line.
It is true Rumsfeld and the administration botched the early part of the war.I think some of those folks should have gone to jail. However, Bush fired Rumsfeld and followed General Patreaus surge strategy. The Democrats had a major issue because the war was killing and maiming a steady number of American and allied soldiers with even more Iraqis killed. Iraq had become a jihadist center as men traveled there to kill an infidel for God.
The war was unpopular of course, and the Democrats saw a route to election victories. They could have tried to end war funding as they did during the Vietnam War, they could have supported the surge, or they could have supported the status quo. The status quo was their road to political victory.
Those creatures put their political futures ahead of war-caused deaths. As Politico reported on Feb 13, 2007, “top House Democrats working in concert with anti-war groups have decided against using Congressional power to force a quick end” to the war. They instead “will pursue a slow-bleed strategy designed to gradually limit the administrations options.”
Democrats launched a major public relations program through the cooperative press and other avenues to ” circumvent the biggest political vulnerablilty of the anti-war movement–the accusation that it is willing to abandon troops in the field.” That fear was why they believed many Democrats hesitated to strongly oppose the war.
John Murtha and the Democratic leadership tied their attempts to limit the number and service time of troops in the field to make any surge strategy fail.To use such a slow bleed strategy against our own troops for political advantage borders on treason in my opinion. Harry Reid’s declaring the war lost was only one of those creature’s public relations ploys. Those Democrats have bloody hands. And for some to take credit for the war’s outcome fell to the depths of hyprocacy.
I took it personally because our niece, nephew in law, one of our daughter’s former college room mates and four of our children’s high school classmates and my wife’s former students were there at risk because of the slow bleed. Democrats were “willing to abandon “our” troops, those we knew “in the field”.

Point is he asks direct questions of me. I respond and ask the same in return, he never does. His choice but as long as he refuses to engage his own topics in a reasonable manor I have no qualms playing his game. Should he ever care to return to some form of civilized discussion I would be more than happy to give his points full consideration.
As I have said before and Joe has confirmed dozens of times, he probably nothing more than the links he posts. I don’t think he understands it, and thus cannot defend it. If he were smart, or just a strong advocate of the Liberal party, he would want people to understand and then agree with his point of view. I’m not getting into the JJ/you argument (that’s for you 2 to duke out-or not, depending on the patience of Helen and Margaret ) but I will say a couple things that your question about playing fair, assertion of fallacy driven argument, etc.
From my POV, JJ and you bring a lot of links of POVs, he far more than you, here in some kind of dueling POV dealie. He doesn’t want to debate, you do. That difference has nothing to do with fairness- just another kind of difference.
There’s no compulsion here to stand-up-for-yourself or defend -your-stance though those of us who enjoy the latitude the blog owners allow for extended and off -subject conversation tend to expect it. If someone, in this case JJ, doesn’t want and won’t engage , why keep expecting it?
As for fallacy driven argument- well, I’m going to throw the idea out here that what is really going on is a duel between mindsets as opposed to some kind of practical argument and that no amount of using rules of argument stuff is going get to the meat of the difference. Find another way to talk about it all and forget trying to get someone to engage who doesn’t want to – or won’t.
BTW, your remark ‘Its a (shame) Liberals like Joe … ” is actually the closest you’ve come in awhile in narrowing your own argument to a specific class/type of liberal which has a POV you don’t like as opposed to damning all liberals and anyone who is part of that whole just by virtue of association. Disagree with what you said but glad to see a shift away from the hasty-generalization fallacy there.

Frankly you’re a lemming and a simple partisan hack, without original thought. Having you included in the give and take here, while quite humorous for me, is analogous to adding a tackling dummy to the line of scrimmage in a real game. You take up space, and force your more capable quarterbacks of running around the dummy, only interfering with your own team to score a touchdown.
If you really wanted to do Obama a favor, the best thing you could do would be to get informed from real news sources not telling you want you want to believe from other partisan hacks, think things through rationally by applying logic and reason to the data while confirming the data accurate, come to your conclusions, and explain in YOUR OWN WORDS how you arrived at those conclusions by providing some convincing authority. I could pick virtually everything you post here apart if I so chose, but it would be a waste of bandwidth and an exercise in futility concerning the make up of the audience.
I’m hesitant to tell you this because I don’t want to do Obama a favor. But you really do your party a disservice by providing the perfect caricature of unprincipled buffoon.
You lend guys like me much ammunition as to why Obama is unfit to be President, beyond just the results of his Presidency, by pointing to the sycophantic nature and idiocy of many of his constituents.

Iraq War: It took President Obama to end it actually. The TimeLine was President Bush’s, which I applaud.
Facts: Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld really made a mess in Iraq when they were in charge. They had too few troops and fired Generals when they said they needed more. They ignored the looting and stealing which happened because there were not enough troops.
It wasn’t until Rumsfeld got out that a reasonable policy was started.
The objective to settle the country down and make an exit plan came about with President Obama.

We do things differently here than most places . Most voters are registered N or U- non-partisan or undeclared. The Ns and Us far outnumber the Rs and Ds,
Also, in our short history as a state we have almost always had bipartisan majority caucusses in the House and Senate.
We elect our fair share of dirtbags and lulubirds but we also elect plenty of fine folks. Senator Gary Stevens is a good and decent man and has done well for his district and all of the rest of us.
I disagree with him on a number of things but when it comes to the important stuff I almost always agree.
I’ve been a registered D for 39 years, am mad at them half the time and the national R’s all the time but when it comes down to where I live I don’t give a damn about the alphabet thingy, just the actions.
I’ll be emailing all the state Senators, Ds AND Rs, who stood with him in the spring again too-
I just wish the national folks could get their dumb act together in a similar way too.

The troops left on Bush’s schedule, not Obama’s. The United States and Iraq endorsed a Status of Forces Agreement in 2008 requiring all US forces to leave by December 31, 2011.

Today’s award goes to Mitt Romney.
Romney adopted the phrase Keep America American, which is kinda nuts on it’s face because what else would America be? Icelandic? To me, it’s kinda like saying, Keep Meat Meaty.
But, there’s a deeper meaning than that. That same exact phrase was used by the KKK when they didn’t think blacks were …. well, you know … people.
When the white supremacist group used “Keep America American,” it was to rally people against blacks American, gay people, Catholics and Jews. When Romney’s used it, as he did in this Los Angeles Times piece, it was to promise that as president he would “keep America American with the principles that made us the greatest nation on Earth.”
And those principles would be? Diversity? Tolerance? Playing fairly?
Nah, probably not.

I for one think Christmas is about coming together despite our differences so I will take exception to Cynthia’s call to zap a rival one more time before the new year.

Juneau Joe, it was Clinton’s lying in court that brought on his impeachment and nothing more. Paula Jones sued and accused President Clinton of sexual harassment for an incident which occurred before he became president. During the trial, Clinton lied under oath about oral sex with Monica Lewinsky. Jone’s lawyers thought the blow job created a pattern of behavior which would convict Clinton. Bill apparently agreed.
Clinton lied to protect himself, and he also encouraged Lewinsky to lie in a signed affidavit. Clinton was then guilty of suborring perjury.
:Paula Jones lost the case, and Clinton didn’t have to lie. But he did, and thanks to Linda Trip, justice was done. Had we done what Bill did, we would have gone to jail. His impeachment without losing his job and his losing his license to practice law were fitting punishments.
I am a nominal Republican, and as long as it doesn’t affect your job or do harm to anyone, you cold be sleeping with a mountain goat for all I care. Barney Frank can do what he wants, but when his lover runs a house of prostitution in their home or he gives special favors to a boy friend who works for Fannie or Freddie, then, I care. That also applies to heterosexual couples. Gender has nothing to do with it.
Bush set the hunt for bin ladin in motion during a war Obama criticized. He did spend the time and resources to find bin ladin, but it was difficult with so many sympathetic people hiding bin ladin.. Our niece and her husband were helping as early as 2003. Obama continued the same policy Bush started. One of the leads came from Obamas’ driver, I believe, and knowledge of him may have come from a water boarding interrogation. Leon Penetta hinted as much.
Obama did nothing to get Osama except issue an order. The same would have been true of Bush. The government had knowledge of Osama’s location a long time before they killed him. They wanted to be sure they could pull it off. I agree it was a great achievement, but to say Obama personally kills terrorists is a stretch. Speaking from experience of what the deed requires, he wouldn’t have the guts. Most people in his position wouldn’t.
I do approve of his expanding Bushs’ drone program and zapping more terrorists. I approve of other parts of Obama’s war policy which was largely a continuation of Bush’s. I do not approve of giving Obama or anyone else more credit than they deserve for murdering our enemies. The real credit goes to the soldiers who did the deed.

The Republican lady gave the tape recording to the Republican police, who hate the president very much because he is a popular Democrat, and they want to destroy him so he can’t be president any more and they can throw him in jail. The head Republican policeman, Ken Starr, is trying to destroy the president because the Republicans in the government told him to.

I find it interesting Obama chose to let Iran keep our drone technology. You can bet that China will be reverse engineering this in no time and cause some serious damage to our national security. You would think he would have done everything in his power to destroy that drone or try and recover it. Poor judgement.
This new act that has been talked about on here about the Military being given legal rights to arrest and detain US citizens indefinitely looks as if it has the votes to pass. Another surprise is that Obama’s main objection is that it lessens his powers, which are diverted to the military. I was rather hoping he would object based on how this bill circumvents the 5th and 6th amendments to our Constitution.
Also out today is that our cellphone carriers have turned over our personal information gathered from our cell phones over to the FBI. Including the access to the GPS units inside almost all cell phones to track our movements.
Then there is an investigation into people who are stockpiling provisions for whatever reason, to see if they are involved in any specious activities.
How do we loose Liberty? One personal freedom at a time. I wonder how many we will have to lose before people wake up to the fact something is terribly wrong with our government today?
For the record this is a very large part of why I am for small government. It has gotten so bloated, and so involved in our lives, and it is daily granting itself new powers. And as we know power corrupts, it always does.

That’s plain dumb Mamawink Obama was following policies begun by Bush and all he did was issue an order. By that logic Obama lost two drone planes last week.The knowledge of our defenses in enemy hands may be harmful to us.
Clinton was not impeached because of a blow job. He was impeached for obstruction of justice when he lied under oath.
Republicans do deserve some credit for budget surpluses. The Clinton administration was also lucky with the end of the Cold War and and the internet bubble.
Micheal Savage offered Newt a million dollars to drop out of the race. I wish he had accepted the offer.
Character didn’t matter, we were told when Clinton ran. He was a dispicible human but he was smart and a pretty good president. Given the rationale during Clinton’s years, I only will judge a politician on how his/her character affects his job performance.

A few facts: Divorced wife 1 while she was going through cancer treament. He was having an affair at the time of Divorce 1. Divorced Wife 2 and was having an affair with wife 3. Pfessor, I agree about gambling’s being an abomination. Our church treasurer stole $60,000 from our church to support her gambling habit. She escaped prison because our tender hearted church declined to press charges if she paid the money back. She borrowed from relatives and has finally paid her debt to them.
My wife and I watched dog races when we lived in Rapid City, but we only bet between our selves. At the end of one race a woman wailed to her friend, “What am I going to do!!?? I just lost this weeks grocery money!!”
I also agree politicians use gambling as a regressive tax on many who are desperate.
However, what we did to the Indians is an abomination. Pine Ridge, South Dakota is an abomination.

Thanks for the advice, Cynthia. I wasn’t planning to buy a genetic service until we recovered from the flood. I’ll be even more careful in the future. Yesterday, I found some information which carries our family back to around 1100 a few generations after they moved to England from Normandy. Since I carry the mutation for blue eyes, I know my ancestors lived north of the Black Sea 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
If you are still out there, what is the German mood about the economy and the EU?

You mentioned “insignificant comments” which are ruining the site. But who is to judge? Certainly the owners don’t express an opinion. Juneau Joe and anon, for example, have bickered for months. As you know, we have free will within the constraints of our attitudes, values, and genetics. For some, the price of posting here is not worth the trouble. For others it is worth the effort, and they control the content. You know what to do if you don’t like the subject matter.

Government-sanctioned gambling is IMHO a abomination. Since it produces nothing, it is just a tax. What kind of tax? (Well, first it’s a tax on people who flunked math, LOL) – and secondly, poor people. It is a severely regressive voluntary tax that rich people never pay, and if they did, $20 bucks here, $100 there is no big deal – but it’s grocery money to those who most often play it. I have watched the players at the local convenience stores – they are some of the most raggedy-assed people you ever saw, a lot of time with small children, playing the lottery without any understanding whatsoever of what their real odds are. It’s IMHO just another example of the moral weakness of politicians, who want money to spend no matter where it comes from.

A bit of catching up here. I can report the weather in Berchtesgaden, Germany had an unusually mild November with no rain so of course no snow. If you were planning a ski vacation in the German Bavarian Alps I would suggest you call first for ski conditions.
I did family history for 10 years until about 2 years ago. The DNA thingy was talked about quite often during that time. It was said that it was relatively new idea and companies offering to help you discover your roots had little information in their databases but this did not stop them from taking your money and giving you a “guess” as to where you came from. I would suggest you really research before sending money.
25,000 to 35,000 wild horses have been removed from BLM land and placed in pens. These are wild animals used to freedom not being confined to a small area with nothing to do, little shade and fighting for food. Horses are not being care for properly and injured animals are not being vetted out. They say they have “over populated” the land and this must be done. I think it is more like the cattle people are looking for free grazing and the hunters who want their prey fat and not competing for grass and of course they have the money and power. A wild horse needs someone with experience but most experienced horsemen don’t wish to waste their time. So there is a supply and demand problem. Google – Wild horses kept in pens for information. Checking Craig’s List you will find a number of “free to good home” or quality horses cheap because there is no hay or can no longer afford the up keep. I keep telling my mare she is very lucky. I will say that horse meat is better than beef, less fat and high in protein but has a sweet taste.
I have heard it said that women talk too much but have little of interest to say. I believe men suffer from the same problem. This blog has a number of men who must simply love the sound of their fingers clicking on the keyboard that they have to comment on everything posted. It is my opinion this is part of the problem of people not wanting to come here. AND after awhile it is so filled with insignificant comments some of us can no longer download it even if we wanted to comment.
How come all good things end up getting phucked?

Hannity unwisely wants to credit Bush with finding Bin Laden. It’s not true, and the shocking tape is proof that he not only isn’t responsible for getting Bin Laden, but it appears that he may have aided in his escape through benign neglect.

Twice, I was in a deteriorating culture, once when a base closed and also, when flu disabled over 60% of the population. In both cases, the center fell apart. If too many older people died, I can understand how their deaths could have damaged the culture by stopping the transmission of old traditions.
I wonder what happened to culture when even more deaths nearly destroyed entire populations. The genetic record shows that at least once practically all of the human race died. Only a few hundred people survived. The same happened to the Fins and Sami during the last ice age.
Indian citizenship was complicated by the fact that as you wrote, they were regarded as citizens of nations under United States protection. As such, they did not have to pay taxes or follow some US laws. They would have to be naturalized as any foreign immigrant was.
In 1884, John Elk sued because he had renounced his allegiance to an Indian tribe and lived in Omaha. He was not allowed to register to vote. He lost his case.
The 1924 voting rights law produced a mixed reaction. Some Indians supported it because it made them able to fully participate in society, but others did not. Charles Santee, a Sioux from northeast Nebraska supported greater integration into American society, but he was suspicious of voting rights. He and others worried sufferage would weaken tribal sovereignity and identity. Two progressive white groups did most of the work to establish voting rights. One arguement they made was that so many Indians joined the Army to fight in WW1, they deserved the right to vote.

This is considered the deepest blow to transmission and retention of culture and identity here- the boarding school thingy added a very nasty further blow .
While some American Indians were considered to be American citizens under the same birthright notions we are all familiar with as early as 1831, it wasn’t until the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 that all natives were considered citizens of the US with the rights and responsibilities that entails. Equally, the federal government continued to assert a sovereign trust “responsibility” which presumed Natives could not make decisions about their own lands or resources but really ought to assimilate whether they wanted to or not. That is slightly different in the last 40 years but still underpins so many issues in Native communities.

The Sami have a similar story. Their cousins, the Fins were the last to be Christianized because unlike other people, they killed the missionaries. They became Christian under the force of arms. When Sweden ruled Finland they discriminated against the Fins and justified their treatment by claiming established science showed them to be Asian, not European.
The Sami were regimentalized and forced to live in specified areas, rather like Indian reservations. Their ceremonial drums were confiscated, put in museums, or burned. The joik was forbidden, and they were forced to identify by first and last names. They endured forced baptisms, and their shamanistic religion was banned. Women lost a lot of power in the new patriarchial Christian religion.
Their children were sent to boarding schools to learn new languages and new ways. Thanks to the schools, most Russian Sami don’t know their native languages.
Many forsook their culture by merging with Swedes and Norwegans. Some migrated to America.
Now, they have their own representative legislatures and Sweden has applogized for their harsh treatment. They use the internet, texting etc to reconnect and rebuild their culture.
In both cases, deaths and disease did not destroy the indigenous culture. Organized effort by stronger governments did the deed. Alaska may be different, but boarding school, not disease did it to the people I cited.

Depression, especially as relates to seasonal light, certainly does affect suicide rates. Studies here indicate that other mental illness and alcohol and drug abuse account for far more youth suicides though. Alaska as a whole is not quite ready to look at it’s culture of acceptance of alcohol abuse as a contributor .
Many villages are legally “dry” in an attempt to stem actual inflow of alcohol but lagged for years in changing the underlying mindset- they are starting to catch up. Birth of FAS babies in Native communities has dropped dramatically . There are still huge issues with addressing this problem- most of which come from not facing it all head on- suicide of youngsters, alcohol, all of it.

Alaskapi, I am generalizing from two groups, Indians and Europe’s indigenous people. The United States government destroyed the buffalo herds to deny Plains Indians their main source of food and materials. They forced them to move to reservations where they were at the mercy of Indian agents who often treated them unfairly. At times, they were made to live peacefully near sworn enemies. Their chiefs and religious leaders lost face and power in contrast to their new overlords.
Yes, native people are diverse, and some like the Sioux were empire builders as Europeans were. Like Europeans, they were relative newcomers to the Plains, and they ruled an area from southern Canada to Kansas. At first, they considered us natural allies because we had similar goals and asperations.
Of course, they were doomed to failure, but they fought back because they were as proud as Europeans and as ill disposed to lives of slavery.. The last phase of the long war began when Inkapduka, a chief of a small band of renegades believed white man’s justice was exploiting Indians. He and his warriors killed most of the settlers in the country near Spirit lake, Iowa and still more in Minnesota.
He also helped defeat Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Indian war gave them some victories, and was the longest in United States history. It lasted over fifty years and ended at Wounded Knee with another minor skirmish in Minnesota around WW1.
A Rapid City writer, the lead singer of Brule, and others have described the horrors of Christian boarding schools designed to strip Indians of their culture and to turn them into respectable farmers and teachers. Agencies also adopted children out to white middle class families. The Brule singer didn’t know he was an Indian until after his adopted parents died and his wife found the paperwork.
Yes, European diseases decimated some tribes. Usually the deaths were unintentional and preceded the whites, but sometimes Europeans exposed blankets etc used in trade with small pox.Disease weakened Native Americians miltarily and economically but their culture and identity survived.
I don’t remember if it was Lewis and Clark or another explorer who visited a Mandan village. Disease had recently reduced their tribe of several thousand to a few hundred. At that time, they still retained their cultural identity, and were as proud of their heritage as before the tragedy. Such populations had likely survived population crashes before.
Thus, judging only from what I know, dependence and the boarding school, not epidemics destroyed the Plains Indians’ culture.

I cannot speak to what the native peoples in your area are facing because Alaska has a one-of-a-kind relationship with Natives but I would hesitate to assume money alone is at root of problems there. The lethargy in so many Native communities as regards picking up their own futures has shifted here, dramatically, in the last 10 years as younger Natives come to terms with visions of what they CAN do to build healthy communities.
Post Self Determination Act federal relationships have helped greatly, the state not very much.

If you are speaking in generalizations I think you are demonstrably incorrect on a number of fronts, the simplest being that some of the worst damage done to Native peoples was the introduction of European diseases.

Anonymous on December 9th: coming from the Far North I grew up with a diversified population that included native people. They worked like dogs to provide for their families when they came to the more urban areas. I learned from them that their culture had a perspective on time that was quite different from the Europeans. It worked for them when they were hunter gatherers and even when they built their own cities because they didn’t need to punch a time clock inasmuch as they worked with the seasons. When they moved out of their environment they adapted. Unlike the tribal council member you mentioned, I wouldn’t be so dang hard on the support the members get while living where the government put them. It was only supposed to be a safety net to tide them over until they no longer needed it. And here is where I mention the casinos. And the ancillary support businesses built around them. By all measures, they are successful.

Yes, anon, seasonal affective disorder complicates things, even at our latitude. When the weather is bad or gloomy for a long time, we hear public service announcements on how to combat winter blues or cabin fever. When I was in England it was so cloudy and foggy through most of January people were irritable and a news paper ran a contest for the best theory on where the sun had gone.

Re: suicide among indigenous peoples, I have some expertise in this topic. Within the scientific medical community it is quite well established that the diminished sunlight during the winter months in northern latitudes has an adverse effect on the brains of human and among other things, resulting in depression. This applies across the board to all walks of life, racial, ethnic and socio-economic status. The incidents of drug addiction, alcoholism and crime as well as suicide are much higher in those climates. The same can be said of Northern Europe, Russia and parts of the United States as well as Alaska.
Humans need sunlight and the Vitamin D derived from it to function well regardless of money.

Suicide is so sad. The ultimate fail. Without hope or vision, life isn’t worth living. We ALL need purpose and connection. We need love, yet we don’t always recognize it, often spending entire lives and fortunes searching in vain.
No matter what side of the climate issue people are on, it cannot be denied we have poisoned our world physically. But the unseen damage goes beyond that, to the very spirit of life. We have become much like parasites to this planet. It could easily destroy our physical existence. It has tremendous inherent capacity for renewal and restoration. Thank God, or we would not be here having a conversation. 😀
All life forms exhibit more than just physical components in their makeup. Every organism contains “life”, a spirit or fluid/rhythmic/electric-like “force” that is constantly in motion as we all move through “space” at an estimated 60,000 MPH. NOTHING in this expanding universe is ever stationary.
Just as a pile of bricks cannot become a house without a “force” to assemble and hold them together, everything requires this cohesive “force” to exist. This force is present in the smallest components.
Like birds in flight or schools of fish, we, as living beings, can tune our spirit to the Great Spirit that flows in and throughout everything. We can infuse our spirit with our Creator’s and follow His lead in this dance of life. We can also choose to ignore, disrupt, or oppose it. Sometimes these are conscious decisions. More often they are not.
Many things in society disrupt the natural rhythm, that “heartbeat” of life. As humans, we are god-like in our ability to choose and MANipulate™ or world. Often our choices harm and divide us instead of uniting us. The more synthetic we make it, the further we get away from the richness of its essence.
That is why is is more blessed to give than receive and important to love others as we should love ourselves. It’s that love that provides cohesion. The greatest love story is the life and gift of Jesus. The cool thing is you don’t need to search far and wide. We all control the door to our heart.
But don’t take my word for it. And certainly don’t base your understanding of it through the actions or interpretation of others. Don’t look to society or institutions, as they are only a reflection of our own projections. Go to the source, the very one from where we originate. Close your eyes and look within.
For in him we live and move and have our being.

Helen, I haven’t checked back on your blog in months. I’m sorry to hear about Harold, but I hope you had a delightful Thanksgiving. I agree with you on a lot of issues, and as far as turkey day is concerned: (1) there is no such thing as too much butter, (2) bacon goes with everything, (3) although you think you can’t have too much paprika in the kitchen, for turkey stuffing, give me sage and thyme every time (pun intended) and “too much” freshly ground nutmeg for the pies, and (4) if anyone quotes anything from “Faux” News, they can leave the table (or get their pie in their face, not in their mouth).
If the Republicans had half a brain amongst them, they’d nominate Jon Huntsman. Except for his anti-choice stance, he’s almost human. Favors civil unions (I’d prefer marriage equality, but no one’s perfect), was a well-respected governor, appointed as President Obama’s ambassador to China, speaks fluent Mandarin (some of the GOP candidates can’t even speak fluent English), believes is science and told Donald Trump that he “wasn’t going to kiss [his] ring or any other parts of his anatomy.” If Huntman got the nomination, he’d be hard to beat among conservative Democrats and independents. But since the GOP doesn’t have half a brain between them, President Obama is probably safe.

I agree with Tex. The European welfare system worked as long as the nations produced more new tax payers each generation. Some managed better than others because of their work ethics and natural resources which sent money into the system to compensate for the drain welfare exerted on their economies.
Then, the birth rate fell, and Europeans recruited immigrants from the Middle East and elsewhere to compensate for the shrinking younger class. They were not fully integrated into society and tended to make less money than natives. Many countries were struggling with debt before the crash. It was merely the straw which broke the camel’s back.
Socialism cannot survive without an external source of money or a steadily growing source of workers who pay taxes. Some of the European nations are more welfare than socialist, but they are also struggling. It is a benevolent system, but it cannot sustain itself forever.
Liberalism and conservatism are meaningless terms until one defines them. By my definition, the Democratic party was moderate in the days of John Kennedy and Scoop Jackson. Nancy Peloci and the rest of the leadership are not moderates. Obama is far from the middle of the road. He may not have traveled as far down the road as many of his associates, but he is not a moderate.

I agree with alaskapi that cultural identity is as basic as gender and race. They define who we are and without an inborn certainty of who we are, we are adrift. I don’t know much about the Alaskan or other indigenous people. I do know the Indians who live across the river from us are still struggling with their lost traditions and identities. Making them in effect wards of the state exacerbates their enoie.
My distant cousins, the Finns and Sami are as angst ridden as the Indians. Like the Indians, Sami are trying to rebuild their culture.
I also agree about the tyrany of the metropolitian majority.

alaskapi. My perspective comes from my next door neighbor. A retired Vietnam war vet and a Native American himself. He is paid by the tribal council 4 time a year to travel to a council meeting whose soul purpose is to try and work out solutions to this problem. It is his opinion this free money is the root cause of the problems they are facing because the money is not earned. Because all of their financial needs are taken care of his people have no drive to push themselves to become more. He has been a long time advocate of holding back that money to make collage a requirement to be eligible.

The horrendously high suicide rate we have here in Alaska Native communities has little bearing on wealth or the lack of it. We have some very wealthy Native communities and some so poor you wonder how people survive.
It has more to do with identity in a changing Native culture and the broader society- something Erik Eriksen pegged after WWII in large refugee communities in Europe. We don’t have many ways left to talk about identity in this country anymore which get to a truly human notion as opposed to an economic notion. It hurts us.

I am to far right to believe a Left way of thinking can be possible while having a prosperous society. Ken Hamblin, the Black Avenger, a radio talk show host had a challenge for years on his talk show. We know welfare is ultimately a destructive force. Indian tribes have been dealing with some of the highest rates of depression and suicide. Why? Members of a local tribe in my home town receive $6000 a month from their tribes who own most of the casino’s in our state. $6000 a month works out to be $72,000 a year. A very nice lifestyle. Why is it then they have such horrible levels of mental health and suicide? Because having it given, at any level is harmful in the long run. This is not the answer. I don’t apologize for being a Reagan follower. There is a give and take to be debated, but the correct answer isn’t mediocrity and half measures now. Even Bill Clinton had announced the idea of “big government” over, and for a time, it worked just fine.
But it didn’t happen. George Bush brought it back, Democratic socialism masked under the banner of “Compassionate Conservative”, and Barack Obama has tripled down and then some. Barack Obama lied through his teeth about fiscal responsibility – there is no denying that. And we will shortly be downgraded again. Two months ago was a shot across the bow. The torpedo has been launched this time.
Labels may define, but your assessment of me is not entirely accurate. My immigration policies for Mexico would be considered radically “liberal” by most Conservatives.
But fiscally? If you want to consider me radical, so be it. When the credit card is maxed, it is not time to ask for a higher maximum. You can share the wealth with your neighbor, even confiscate his possessions in entirety, but it won’t scratch covering the payment.

Laissez-faire capitalism the last 20 years? $15,000,000,000,000.00 in debt, 100% debt/GDP as of Halloween this year, is not laissez-faire capitalism, which in fact not only works, it is the only system of economic modernity that has worked.
What doesn’t work is socialism, any form, of which America is teetering on the brink of adopting. And there is no debate that “democratic socialism” works, unless of course you believe the last three years of a strong welfare state and a push for fiscal redistribution has worked. Ask the European countries at present how that has worked. They are collapsing as we speak, or are you so poorly read, you haven’t bothered to notice?

anaon- Beck et al choose to look at language about capitalism as an all or nothing affair. Some of them seem unaware that there are multiple forms of capitalism, some more truly useful and beneficial than others.
When we adopt economic styles or theories , we need to stay aware we really are making it all up and agreeing or not on rules for this’ and thats- we are not uncovering laws of the universe. We are making agreements- that is all.

UAW- would be interested in your take on the Third Way link and attendant info because quite frankly it seems to me to be the basic explanation of why the Dems fell for the repeal of Glass-Stegall etc, inc Pres Clinton, and haven’t advanced a more truly leftist agenda when they have had majorities… but then again, my background and upbringing in relation to community as per Native value system makes me very, very left in this current world.

All those things are well and good but there is simply no money for it. It’s not just that Republicans are trying to be evil – or the Democrats for that matter. There is no end to the good you can do, but it has to be paid for. It’s that simple. Yes we need to get our butts out of Afghanistan, Iraq – and for my money, close about 650 of the 700 or so foreign military bases, but the biggest drain on the Treasury is entitlements – Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Social Security would be fine if the politicians had not raided it over the years to buy elections and had left the money in that people PUT in.
But they didn’t. They spent it and put IOUs in its place. They should all go to jail; you and I would if we were stewards of someone else’s money and did that. The infusion of govt money into medicine has forced the prices higher and higher and they propose to fix it by — you guessed it — more government.
I am looking at about a 25% pay cut in three weeks from now, but I am still working and glad to have a job. No offense meant; I voted for Obama, but he’s IMHO a huge disaster so far, made worse by the fact he stood on GWB’s shoulders and compounded Bush’s horrific mistakes.
Having said all that – nothing matters if the money is not there. We have to stop borrowing; our creditors are going to stop us if we don’t stop ourselves. We are stiffing them by paying them in devalued money already. That’s called being a crook.
Makes me ill. We are in deep kimchi.
Sorry for the disjointed post; I’m pretty tired.

There were protesters at the grocery store handing out pamphlets on the evils of America . I politely declined to take one. The flood cost us a lot of money, and if we have a spare $100 it will go to the church and the food bank. Maybe next summer, when we know more. I’ll let you know what we think of it.
I just found that the University of Wisconsin through google digitized our family book. It is on line and even on Kindle. Now, the cousins who don’t have a copy can read the book any time they want.
We have experienced challenges and change through human history. At least once practically all of our ancestors died. The Fins were nearly wiped out twice during the ice age according to the “genetic bottlenecks.” One difference is now, we are so dependent on technology and the world has so many more people than in the past.
Public radio had a discussion about the ramifications of a shift in the Gulf Stream which might send Europe into near ice age conditions. It has happened before. Now, a man said, Europe has some of the most irritable and best- armed people in the world. That’s what makes this time different. We are dependent on technology and on others to feed us.

I know some folks who are doing this as gifts for others. Most likely this offer can be found on their website. This is not for us this year. Must save like mad for what Medicare and out other “backup” insurance does not cover on husband’s cancer. Poolman, an ancestor did most of the work for me a hundred years ago. He and others traced the family with numbered cousins from the first arrival around 1640. They then followed the family to Wales and back to Normandy between 800 and 1100. The family name was in Denmark before 870.
Over the years, we have found other people with the same family book.Its usually accidental. Two years ago a restaurant called the Golden Corral gave veterans a free meal. The place was so crowed strangers sat at the same tables. Our companions turned out to be distant cousins who also owned the book. It seems most branches of the family have passed the book down to the next generation. I have asked them questions, and they have confirmed what I know.
When we lived in England, we visited the Public Records Office in London and read a copy of the Doomsday Book Someone with the family name was listed as a farmer and his worth was ten pounds. We found the name of the ship our family took and the names of the other passengers. Some of them were family cousins. My ancestor was a farmer crowded out by the Enclosure movement.
I used the internet to find more stories of migrations from Denmark. I found family names spelled like or similarly to ours and legends. The concensus was that a group of Danes moved south to escape a serious of bitterly cold winters and chilly summers. So far, I have no idea if they were pillaging and stealing as Vikings did.
My wife and I had also visited Wales and Scottland . We found my mother’s family and had birth certificates made of the ancestors born before her part or the family migrated to the US in the 1840’s.We also visited the home town of the first ancestor who migrated to the US.
As we know, England is a salad bowl with a history of repeated invasions.If our guesswork is right, our family lived in Wales and Central England for six hundred years. I researched ethnic migrations and physical features. Welsh people may have migrated from northwestern Spain. They have features in common with Basques. They also tend to be darker than most of my family. Our family more closely matches the appearance of Germantic people than the Welsh.
Oddly enough farmers in far northeastern Scotland and far southwestern Norway spoke a dialect which both could understand as late as 100 years ago.
My cousins moved from Finland and Sweden in the 1870’s. Since some of them have subtle Asian features in spite of their light skin and blue eyes, they might also have some Sami blood, but that is only speculation. A few Fins and Swedes also have Asian features My wife’s maternal grandmother came from Sweden when she was sixteen.
My Dutch in laws are easier since they still keep in touch with relatives in Holland and South Africa.
Maybe some of our ancestors converted to Judism in the seventh century as you suggested. I need to do more research on that. Like the Jews, some Fins and Sami claimed they were Swedish to avoid discrimination.
An old meaning of our name is fisherman. We don’t have any royalty. Most were farmers.
Most of the families who live near us are descended from Germans, Danes, Icelanders, British, and Czechs. We have only one Italian family.
If some of your ancestors were here in the sixteen hundreds, we might be cousins. Do you know if any settled in Massachusetts? If you have blue eyes, we are defintely cousins. A Danish geneticist discovered blue eyed people are the result of a mutation which occurred north of the Black Sea about eight to ten thousand years ago. Obama and Dick Cheney are distant cousins. So, yes, if you got back far enough, we are all related.
I have done a few ancestor web sites, and I should do more. Eventually, I’d like to take a genetic test and see if it confirms our family speculation.
Looking at new cultures and possible family connections was more entertaining than dealing with the flood or possible impending dark days Pfessor mentions.

Pfessor: Personally, I am for a single payer health care system. At least now, 85% of the cost of medical care must go toward health care and not lobbying efforts. They can be audited. People cannot be dropped from their insurance when they are ill – that is good. All people can get health care now – that is good. Is President Obama;s plan perfect – NO. Everything I have read in the past year says that we absolutely cannot afford Obamacare in its current form. I just attended a lecture by the CEO of my hospital chain and they are making preparations to cut back services, eliminate positions and reduce salaries when Obamacare becomes law in the near future. The law is going to require adding a tremendous number of people with no medical coverage to the rolls of patients – I’m not saying people shouldn’t be covered, they need the medical care of course – but the bottom line is that somebody has to pay for it and the money is not there.
When Congress was setting up the blueprint for Obamacare, they spoke to (I think it was governor? of Singapore or Hong Kong?) and he was very blunt: yes you can do this – we do – but you have to control costs first. The Americans recklessly haven’t done that, and the money just isn’t there for this bloated monster. The Bernank, Geithner, Rubin et al have gone completely off the reservation: in the absence of the constraints imposed by a partial gold standard (like we had until 1971) they have a free hand now to sail us into completely uncharted waters as they play in the sandbox with other uber-intellectual European bankers like themselves and experiment with our lives. (Go, Occupy Wall Street!!) When they print money to cover their experiments, the value comes from somewhere – and it comes from the savings of American citizens ultimately.
We are riding for a fall, my friend – maybe worse than 1929. Hell, PROBABLY worse than 1929. The only thing postponing it is that they just keep printing money and borrowing, but like the guy who survives by paying one credit card with another, it will stop, and the longer it takes, the worse it will be. Mark my words.

It is interesting to research our ancestors. My grandmother did that years ago, in the early 70’s, and traced us back to the early 1600’s. Many were here in North America since then and mainly from Europe. Her father’s family was Dane and she traveled there in her research. That was a major task back then. Now we have the internet.
Have you done the Ancestry websites, or is this by some other means?
The other side of my family is Italian and came over in the early 1900’s.
My wife’s family is basically dirt farmer on one side and mixed with Scottish royalty on the other. It makes for interesting conversation. Her grandmother was likely the product of a Jewish parent, although those records have been lost to her family.
Eventually it will all merge into the same genetics if we go back far enough, I’m certain. At least in theory and if the biblical account is true. I know many Jews tried to hide the fact that they were Jewish, changing names and destroying records.
Others converted to Judaism, yet I don’t know if ancestry records show that. Some 80 percent of today’s Jews are Ashkenazi Jews which is said to come from Germanic or Turkic tribes that converted to Judaism in the 8th century.
Then there are the “lost” tribes and some in Ethiopia. I wouldn’t be surprised if we all had a little Jewish blood in us. 😀

I am not a Jesus freak or an atheist. I agree with Poolman. Most of our religious celebrations are a conglomoration of past worship practices which Christians adopted. The timing of most coordinates with important events such as the winter solstice. Such festivals marked the passage of seasons which if not properly commemorated meant the difference between life and death.
When we lived in England we like many of the villagers went out to watch farmers burn their fields after the wheat harvest. The bright reds and yellows reflecting from low overcast was not far from a religious experience. It was easy to imagine distant ancestors at worship.
I don’t believe religious “nut jobs” have usurped the Republican Party. They were at their most powerful during the eighties. The religious right has been marginalized as the majority throws them a few bones to keep them in the fold.
I think Michele is an attractive woman, but unlike the song, I don’t “like” “Fat Bottomed Girls.”
“All hail Obama” ? Not from this side of the fence.

If Christians were wise, and this pains you I know but we are still the majority, they would demand a vote to cancel Christmas as a federal holiday and return it to a day of labor like the Pilgrims. We can easily celebrate the birth of Christ with its beautiful music (what’s your beautiful music Puppet – the Stones?) and put it where it always belonged – in our hearts and away from the likes of you. Frankly, you don’t deserve Christmas, Puppet. No federal holiday, no public celebration, no public demonstration of peace on earth – and certainly no gift exchange. They’d just as soon eat their own – for the redoubtable sin of not being idealogically pure enough (read that “crazy enough) as they would those “others” that disagree with them totally.
And I just realized that you and I are BOTH embarrassed – I by the lunatic path the GOP – my old party – has been taken by the religious nutjobs, and you by the way that same pack of loonies has taken over organized religion.

Actually all this Christmas hullabaloo is really stupid. A real marketing success and gain for capitalism. As if lights and tinsel and gifts and shopping and caroling has anything to do with Jesus. 🙄
Seriously. Historians are certain He wasn’t born in December and extravagant birthday celebrations were not the norm in the first century. Anyone that can has discovered the holiday was added to appease pagans whose very rituals did take place on these supposed “sacred” days we celebrate. It was the combining of state and religion that gave us these holidays.
Just like those that complain about the removal of public prayer in schools, they are naive to the true teachings of the New Testament they claim to uphold. Public prayer is specifically called out as insincere and the honoring of certain days over others a symptom of spiritual immaturity.
The “Christmas Spirit” has little to do with Christianity, which is a lifestyle change evidenced everyday and in every aspect of one’s life. It is a false spirit that presents itself as genuine and often is mistaken for the true Spirit of God that IS always at work ushering in the kingdom of God.
Anyone getting all worked up over a supposed “war on Christmas” is obviously not focused on the real battlefield where the church is losing ground. Apathy. As we continue to try to mainstream Christianity in this secular world, the true message is being diluted to render it most ineffectual.
If believers would operate in the capacity as directed by the very author of the faith, the real world would begin to reflect those profound characteristics.
Just my 2 cents as a long time “Jesus freak”…

Fortunately for me, I’ve been saved by the federal government’s Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan, something I had never heard of before needing it. It’s part of President Obama’s healthcare plan, one of the things that has already kicked in, and it guarantees access to insurance for U.S. citizens with preexisting conditions who have been uninsured for at least six months. The application was short, the premiums are affordable, and I have found the people who work in the administration office to be quite compassionate (nothing like the people I have dealt with over the years at other insurance companies.) It’s not perfect, of course, and it still leaves many people in need out in the cold. But it’s a start, and for me it’s been a lifesaver — perhaps literally.
Which brings me to my apology. I was pretty mad at Obama before I learned about this new insurance plan. I had changed my registration from Democrat to Independent, and I had blacked out the top of the “h” on my Obama bumper sticker, so that it read, “Got nope” instead of “got hope.” I felt like he had let down the struggling middle class. My son and I had campaigned for him, but since he took office, we felt he had let us down.
So this is my public apology. I’m sorry I didn’t do enough of my own research to find out what promises the president has made good on. I’m sorry I didn’t realize that he really has stood up for me and my family, and for so many others like us. I’m getting a new bumper sticker to cover the one that says “Got nope.” It will say “ObamaCares.”
As more and more people find out about the benefits of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Republicans are going to find it difficult to continue the “Repeal Obaaaaahmaacare” siren song. And the fact that health insurers are cutting their lobbying costs because the Department of Health and Human Services has stated that such lobbying costs cannot be counted as providing healthcare is just icing on the cake.

Their lobbying scheme didn’t work. They know it and are finally resigning to the fact that health reform is the law of the land and that they are going to have to comply with it. And since they can’t count lobbying costs as providing you with health care, lobbying costs are now in direct competition with shareholder gain. If the insurance companies want to make more money but can’t do it by kicking people off their insurance or counting everything and its mother as a “health care cost,” there are only a few ways of doing it: cut administrative costs (hello, industry lobbyists, hi! Waving atcha!), and raise revenue by attracting more customers in a level playing field.

I will never understand that Atheist fear of, or hostility towards, Religion. In 40 years of church going, we have never forced anyone to attend. We never forced one family to accept a food donation from our pantry. We never had one person complain when we showed up to make a house payment or pay a utility bill or pay for a car repair. So we all know how ridiculous but damaging this Liberal war of political correctness is. Last time, we had a 7 year old boy get suspended and charged with sexual harassment for kicking a boy in the nuts that had been bullying him. Now we have a 9 year old boy who said his elementary school teacher was cute in a private conversation with a friend being suspended.

Our low this morning was -6. It was colder than in many parts of Alaska.
Anonymous, consider this. Iran sends oil to China for refining because it doesn’t have sufficent capacity for its needs. China sends the finished product back. They also buy a lot of Iranian oil.
Russia is helping Iran build its nuclear facilities. They are also angry at the United States because we plan to build an anti- missile defense against Iran. If we build it they threaten to aim their missiles at us. Some believe we have disabled their Mars probe.
Hackers have damaged Iran’s nuclear program. Several of its scientists have been killed, and at least two explosions damaged nuclear facilities. Iranians claim to have shot down a large unmanned spy drone. They are angry. So called students invaded and damaged the British embassy.
Hillary and Geitner put stronger sanctions in the bill which might let the Army kill American citizens. One feature would stop the oil trade between China and Iran.
Iranians warned us that they will retaliate soon. China says if we attack Iran, they will attack us.
All Iran would need to do would to place an embargo on the Straights of Hermous. Even if they only warned ships to stay out, many would. We and Russia have ships in the area. Our attempt to keep the straights open might be a source of conflict. An embargo would send the oil market higher, and high fuel prices might be the last straw to send Europe and later us into a deep recession.
One of Iraq’s former leaders said the most important thing the war taught them was to never fight a war with a major power unless one has thermonuclear weapons. Isreal has about 200 nukes, and other nations are or may have the bomb later.
It could get much worse, not that it will.

I hate to be an alarmist. But it seems to me there are a lot of things going on that, were one to start to draw some lines and connect the dots, I think it would give many reasons for concern.
We have rioters breaking the law in the streets of most every major city.
We have economic collapse occurring on a global level.
We have some of the freest countries in the world curtailing the freedoms of their population.
We have the United States, known for personal freedoms and liberties, passing legislation to turn its military on its own people. Last year a military division was deployed within the borders of the U.S. tasked with the mission to protect against domestic terrorism and civil unrest.
If I were a leader who had foreknowledge of events to come say from something like a collapse of society or the like, and I wanted to cut the loss of human life as much as possible when all forms of infrastructure and modern conveniences break down, how do I educate the populous? I would promote a variety of reality shows on surviving in the wild and off the land in as many different climates as possible.
We are seeing massive amounts of wealth being consolidated by an elite few. We have massive amounts of corruption in our own government. I know there will be naysayers that will say this happens in every generation. But to them I say, not all at once, not at this level, and not like this. I wonder how much has to go wrong, before we can be justified in feeling that something is terribly wrong, and might be soon to get very much worse?

Newt is one of the most creative and intelligent politicians active today.Gingrich created a plan to retake the House, and he had the skill to make it happen. He also shares a lot of credit for the two greatest achievements of the Clinton years–a balanced budget and welfare reform. He ls also as undisciplined and arrogant as Bill Clinton, another bright politician who could have been much more than he was.
New is also a blowhard, and he is arrogant. He can’t focus on one thought for long. Though it would be fun to watch Newt destroy Obama in a debate, he will crash. I hope it happens before Newt is nominated.
Poolman likes Ron Paul, and Pfessor and I have expressed a bias in favor of John Huntsman. Both are doing better in the polls now. I still hope Mitt Romney can survive.
Most will not remember or care, but four years ago this afternoon a young man killed eight people at Von Maurer in Omaha’s West Roads Mall. Several people were seriously wounded. Then, the man killed himself. People we know were there that day.

An old doctor-friend of mine (old as in 83 years old) have engaged in regular lively give-and take about politics for several years. He’s a staunch liberal, I an equally staunch libertarian, so it’s a lot of fun. We often buy books for each other, with the promise that we will read the other’s propaganda. He bought me Soros, I bought him Friedman. Great fun.
A couple of years ago I bought Newt’s then-new book and read it myself, before giving Jim his copy. It was appalling. I had admired Gingrich greatly for his wide-ranging knowledge base and his authorship of nearly all of the Contract With America, but this was a rambling collection of throw-away one-liners, dogmatic statements that were patently not true, pandering to the Religious Right – but mostly a very unconvincing treatise of why we needed to “return America to God.” ???? “Return America to God?” – and this guy is a history professor?
When my friend asked me where was his book, I told him I had thrown it in the trash; even though I had been a Gingrich supporter, I was just too embarrassed to give that kind of drivel to my old friend. (He said I shouldn’t have done that; now he was forced to upgrade his opinion of my tastes. LOL)
No, I find Professor Gingrinch’s treatment of his ex-wives pretty distasteful, but that’s not his problem. His problem is that he is exactly the kind of dogmatist that is often in error but never in doubt. I found out what that leads to by voting for GWB – (twice – ok, so I’m a slow learner). The only problem is that Obama is probably worse. I hope Romney is the candidate; Newt has shown himself for WHO HE REALLY IS for too long to survive the election process. In a debate I don’t think anybody can touch Gingrich – and certainly not Obama; the question is whether he is the best man to be president. I think not.

Fresh off snubbing Donald Trump by refusing to participate in a debate he’s moderating, Ron Paul blasts his fellow GOP presidential candidates for paying the billionaire businessman so much credence.
“I don’t quite understand the marching to his office,” Paul said on CNN’s State of the Union this morning, referring to the parade of presidential candidates who’ve met with Trump in recent months. “I didn’t know he had the ability to lay on hands and anoint people.”
Paul rejected the debate invitation by deeming Trump beneath the presidency, while Trump released a statement saying Paul is “clown-like” and “willing to lie” and “either very jealous of Mr. Trump, stupid, or a combination of both.” The debate is scheduled for Dec. 27 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Your premise is a false one. To think that someone from before I was born could hijack anything is absurd. Conservatives, and others like me, have a thing that we like to call ideals. Ideals are things we try to achieve. Because we do not meet them does not mean we are hypocrites. It means we have set a very high standard and do our very best as human beings to achieve it. We put ourselves out there to try and be more and do more than those before us, in spite of the very real possibility of failure.
This flies in the face of what the majority of Liberals believe. Liberals want easily achievable goals. It is because you and yours have set the bar so low that we are in the moral mess we are in today. You think you are being kind by making everything so dam easy so that EVERYONE can think they are a success. The problem is the bar has been set so low, that many lose the will to exceed expectations and be truly excellent. As you might imagine this is a belief system I have little respect for.
You cry and celebrate that in your eyes the caliber of the candidates that have presented themselves to run for President of the United States is lacking. Let us take a look at Herman Cain. Let us take a look at Newt Gingrich. Look at what these men and their families have had to endure at the hands of the Liberal party. Did you care about Herman Cain’s economic plan? No. You all were a Jerry Springer episode going after the man for supposed marital infidelities. You want to talk hypocrisy? You couldn’t be bothered with the subject of infidelities when Bill Cigar up my interns crotch Clinton was President. And now you are suddenly struck with morality? Tell me, impact would Cain’s alleged indiscretions have on our country were he to become President? Do you think maybe is 9-9-9- plan would have more effect on your family? The obvious answer is his economic policies were of far more importance, yet look what you all focused on.
What this tells me is Liberals do not give a good God dam about this country. They care about power and making sure they have it. You have no rule book yet demand others play fair. I have said for years that Liberals are the party of personal attacks. How you all conducted yourself to this point proves me 110% correct. Do not expect men of character and quality to come out and subject themselves to you. The very fact they have character precludes most of them from subjecting their loved ones to what you Liberals do to anyone who does not believe as you do.
When it comes to qualifications, Newt, as a politician and a statesman beats everyone on the chess board, even your beloved Messiah.

Thanks for the recipie alaskapi. We have many quarts of raspberries in the freezer that I raised and picked last summer. Ive got recipies, but I am interested in something a little different for Christmas.
I agree we need the Glass- Stegal law again or something like it.
I’ve been calling my representatives but so far all they do is tell me not to worry. We citizens are in no danger of sudden arrest or detention. They are blind.
As delurkergurl wrote it is dangerous when intent and potential authority differ. We are slowly losing our freedoms on many fronts. The latest is the Labor Departments’ intent to ban anyone younger than 18 to work with heavy farm machinery or livestock.

I’m as unsettled as you on most counts as regards the language and intent in this part of the bill.
I’m thinking, because it is a huge defense bill covering a bazillion defense related items, that it is too easy for legislators to skim over this section without enough thought. Would love to see someone in the House seperate it out and actually argue it on it’s own (lack of) merits.
I’m not surprised by the R response as it is an important part of what is best about the Rs and am glad to see they haven’t completely fallen away from what-is-best about their philosophy. What is saddest to me is the D thingy- as I think centrist Ds are so far from what-is-best about Ds as to be totally disheartening.

AlaskaPi, I saw that clarification of intent, as well as the section that specifically excludes Americas (but apparently not from the whole law). I was glad to see it but it’s not enough. The intent isn’t to poof our citizens but the authority is still there.
It is baffling to her Republicans rail against this. Maybe because a Democrat co-authored it? IIRC, the first round passed with an overwhelming Republican majority, and the final Senate bill was passed by just about everyone. I say it’s interesting when Republicans complain about it because they are the first ones who start screaming when there’s an intent to try a suspected terrorist in civilian court. They want it to be military, or no trial at all. This is what they are getting, so where’s the beef?
Equally baffling are the Democrats who supported it. I don’t get it at all.
I wish I had some hope it wouldn’t make it through the house but I pretty much expect when the bill reconciliation occurs, it will remain the same or get worse, not better. I’m a hopeless pessimist when it comes to the current congress, though, so we’ll see.

It IS very important and something which people of all persuasions should be paying attention to. The fearful mindset which has allowed so many erosions of rights to move freely, talk about our own government , and protect us from our own government needs to be discarded.
We have changed the landscape of America to accomodate fear of the unknown to the point we are damaging what we do know we want to live with/like.
I have memories from childhood about the whole “commie” thing and people doing some really stupid things to feel safe from the boogey-man- we don’t need to do this again.

I’m a very left-libertarian, a distinctly different critter than a right-libertarian. I don’t have any hope that the right-libertarian view would help much but then I only know the right-libertarians here and the organized ones are mostly fruitcakes dabbling in militias and all.
I did get into an interesting comment back and forth with Norm Olson on an Alaskan blog recently over whether we should put the Glass-Stegall act back into place fully. I’m still shaking my head that we both agreed we should.
Donna- if you are out there , when used in legal language doesn’t “authorities” means settled precedent?
I’ll watch the clip later today- R Paul so sets my teeth on edge I need to work up to listening to him.
People mostly ignore me about this but I find President Obama to be very moderate and hardly the leftist so many cast him as. The tiny patch of ground we are arguing over in the national scene is a fair amount right of center and has been for almost 30 years.

God what a mess. Al-Qaeda got its wish but not in the way it wanted. I just visited the 9-11 memorial in NYC and it occurred to me that this whole “War on Terror” was like an autoimmune disease – the insult was relatively minor but the response is destroying the patient.
I generally avoid Fox news, but I am a big fan of Judge Andrew Napolitano. I watched his show last night and he is as exercised as I have ever seen him about this bill, your above paragraph notwithstanding. Here is a discussion between him and Rand Paul, senator from KY:
I voted for Obama with great trepidation in the last presidential election, mainly because of the possibility that if McCain were elected president, Klondike Kardashian might succeed The Geezer if he got sick…now I am SURE I did the right thing; Obama’s – and his minions’, Geithner and The Bernank – misadventures can be fixed I think, but electing someone who attacks his own Constitution would have been a far more serious mistake.
This government is completely out of control. My plans are two: first, contact my Representative and urge him to derail this S.1867 abortion in the House, and secondly, do everything I can to campaign against Mark Warner in his next election. Webb is retiring; although we will need a Republican majority to try and repair Obama’s mistakes I will likely vote Democrat in the next Congressional elections. As I said, what a mess…the Libertarians are our best hope, I believe. Hell, if so many of them weren’t certifiably insane I’d even join up with the Tea Party. Now that’s desperation…LOL

Pfesser- comparing the proposed bill and the one the Senate passed , this paragraph was added in Sec 1031 which somewhat changes the original. Whether it is adequate to head off the concerns we all have about this section -? I don’t know.

Here’s one I found in a favorite cookbook, though I would defer to our own maestro, Helen, of course:
“Stuffed Eggs”
5 to 6 eggs, hard boiled
1 to 2 tablespoons oil
Vinegar, to taste
Salt & pepper, to taste
Sugar, to taste
Garnish: pimiento, parsley, chives, bacon bits or cherry tomatoes
Shell eggs and cut in half lengthwise. Remove and mash yolks . . . Add remaining ingredients (except garnish). Stuff whites and garnish as desired

I remember when I was a boy we heard we were going to put a man on the moon. I also remember the movie 2001. It may not have been hubris, but it was close.
The system of dams built on the Missouri River was intended to prevent destructive floods. Mission creep made the corps responsible for navigation, upstream tourism, protecting endangered species, and so on. As a result, flood control became less important than other needs.
A flood this spring was inevitable. Besides the heavy snow cover, six inches of rain or more fell on an upstream area the size of Nebraska. NOP, who compared our plight to a hangnail, was proven wrong. Six inches of rain or more fell on an area the size of the Nebraska panhandle during Hurricane Irene. Much of that water soon ran into the Atlantic Ocean. Our water had to flow down one river.
Yes, allowing the Corps the benefit of extraordinary circumstances, their management has been a joke. Even a FEMA official told me so.
The same changing channel is true of the Missouri River . Carter Lake, Iowa is on the Nebraska side of the river. One of my aunts used to have land in Nebraska and Iowa because of past changes in the channel. Both states charged property taxes.
I agree about letting streams take their natural course, but I am prejudiced about this river because the valley is my home.
Our neighbor said it took a month for him and helpers to remove most of the sand from 14 acres. NOP was wrong about that too. The farmers won’t get any money from FEMA because FEMA is broke.
Five or six foot sand dunes cover a wide forest next to the river. All of those trees are probably dead. Our neighbor sometimes wondered why huge 200-year old trees were not growing out there. Now, we know. A similar flood killed them long ago. Our part of the river has been slowly shifting west. Lewis and Clark probably took their expedition over our farm. When I do deviled eggs I only do about a half-dozen so Ed & I don’t eat ourselves sick on them; so for 6 yolks, I add my spices and between 1-2 tsp of vinegar and mix it in before I add the dressing. If you haven’t used vinegar before, you will want to add the dressing carefully & cut back your usual amount (to keep the consistency right). Of course, you may want to adjust to your taste.
I was pretty excited to see this part of the post – these are part of our holiday menu, always! Don’t usually see them mentioned.

I disagree on the moon analogy. Confidence and competency got us to the moon. Confidence is an entirely different animal from hubris, which is overconfidence and arrogance. I understand the desire to confine the river as much as possible in order to maximize habitable land, but look where it has got us. There are many municipalities along the Mississippi that, if the levees broke, the river bed has risen so much that the river would take an entirely new course permanently.
It seems far better to me to work WITH the Father of the Waters rather than against it – let it flood gently over millions of square acres to a depth of six inches – rather than confine it and have it flood twenty feet deep. I’m no hydrologist though…I’m sure the Corps knows exactly what it is doing.

Yes, increased fertility is a possibilty, Pfessor. A hundred years ago, several farmers cut the dikes to let their fields flood to improve their land. Our problem is no one knows how many soil organisms survived the extended innundation. We are lucky. Only an inch of silt and fine sand covers our land.
Yes, hubris is a wonderful feeling. It got us to the moon, but nature wins in the end.

The other is Sophia Karlsson Jeg Venter. It describes a Sami man’s disenchantment with life in the South. Sort of like Don William’s “Tulsa Town.”

She reminds me a little of Judy Collins and near the end, she borderline joiks. Joiking was once banned because of its pagan origins.
Our largest preditor is the coyote. Coyotes killed and partly ate a Canadian singer when she was hiking. Once in a while, mountain lions wander through. A teenager out hunting, shot one across the river from us a couple of weeks ago. He lunged at the boy from behind a tree. Five or six years ago, one of my wife’s ex students saw a mother and two cubs on her front lawn. I’m glad we don’t have bears.

The ancient Egyptians depended on the Nile’s yearly flood to bring fertility; perhaps the ?Missouri? will do the same for you.
Of course the Egyptians didn’t corral the Nile into narrow channels with levees like we do, so when the spring flood came, it was a gentle rise of water that was only a few inches deep.
Once again, humanity’s hubris and desire to conquer nature rather than work with it causes it to shoot itself in the pecker.

As with the song, some people didn’t return.
Thanks to our drought, most places have had less than an inch of rain since mid August.That has helped put the rivers back to their normal levels. The wind creates haze as the sand blows. Some farms now have five foot sand dunes. The sand is too fine to be good for anything. Farmers are scraping it into large piles. Some are moving it to other fields and tilling it into the ground.
No one, not even the experts knows how the soil will yield next year, because our land has not been submerged for five or six months since Europeans moved here. One of our fields still has a ten acre pond. Some people still bear psycyological effects as tornado or hurricane survivers might.
It is 1 degree this morning. The storm which damaged southern California northeastward is supposed to give us rain and then 4 to 7 inches of snow. I’m happy because we need the moisture before the ground freezes, and because I like to cross country ski.

It’s Muddy Waters by the Seldom Scene – my sentimental favorite bluegrass band of all time. My wife (then girlfriend) and I saw them in the early ‘seventies. They are still around and I think even played at the White House several years back. There is a live version on YouTube with this song’s being sung by its writer, Phil Rosenthal. Judging by the voice, I think the version above is being sung by John Starling, who was also a surgeon. The informal leader was John Duffey; on the Live at the Cellar Door album he cuts up with the audience. He did that in person, too; it was a wonderful band to see live.
I don’t know if you are familiar with this band, but they set out to NOT be commercial and only played locally. All the band members kept their day jobs, but they got so popular they had commercial success anyway.
Anyhow, a ran across that song again last night and it made me think of you and your family. Is the river completely back in its banks yet?

PFesser – I’ve been charged three times by black bears, twice as a bluff charge , once for real. The ‘for real” one was by a starving adolescent bear which Fish and Game shot shortly thereafter. It was trying to break into houses and was tearing up yards and garages and all trying to find food.
Blacks are generally more ready to take off when people come around than browns but they will and do attack.
UAW- you involved with one of the black powder or historical re-enactment groups? (I’m ignoring the horsepunky 🙂 )

delurkergurl, I took it personally because my wife and I lived it when our friend survived a dangerous year. Some of the ex husband’s friends came for us because they knew we were helping her. They committed vandalism and twice followed my wife home from work when she was at school after 10PM. One time, a patrol car followed her home to be sure she was all right.
When in the service, I survived some hard times which made me a slightly disabled veteran. I was also a coward for a couple of days, so I know how it feels. Then, I saw it though to the end. I remember the girl and her father who burned to death in a truck, and I still compare any of my challenges to how they died.
Compared to them a few mean words on a small internet forum is a walk in the park. I take many things personally because they trigger past memories, but I am as dogged and relentless as any man you will have the misfortune to meet. You either care enough to fight for what you had or you don’t. Complaining that someone forced you to give up is dishonest. You and you alone make the decision.
I’m not including you with the group who has largely abandoned the forum. Like a trooper, you keep trying from time to time. I notice. I also remember you were one of only two people who offered to donate to our food pantry during the flood. You seem like a nice person, and I like you.
My reacting to triggers is not your fault. Its just the way it is.

Pfessor, we were hiking near Mt Rainier. On the way down, a large back bear with two cubs stood on her hind legs to watch us. She was about a quarter mile away, and we had to walk toward the happy little family before the trail curved away. That was a long walk. I wish we had heard the lore about black bears not chasing people.
Do the bears rely more on endurance or short bursts of speed to catch their prey?
Its 30 degrees and cloudy with a north wind gusting to about 40 MPH. I’m glad we did so much outside work yesterday and the day before.
In case you are interested, a young Hungarian band made a video with a $100.00 camera in two and a half days for a television contest. They started too late to finish on time, so they posted it on you tube. It is the Sara Helene Band “Give me Back.”

My nephew and I were riding our ATVs several years ago when we surprised a black bear on an old strip mine road. When she took off we decided to follow her. Pretty soon we were going over twenty miles an hour. She was in top shape for the oncoming winter – fat and sleek. I was amazed by how fast that old girl could run! She finally got tired of the chase and bounded over the hill and through the brush.
Local lore has it that you can get away from a bear if you run uphill. I’ve never seen or heard of a blackie chasing a person, though.

I’ll bet you do get some localized weather effects from the mountains and ice fields.I checked Alaska weather. St. Paul has a southwest wind of 41 to 52 MPH and a barometer reading 2916. It must be hard to stand up in the open.
Nome is -12. Some of the worst of that November storm hit their area. I hope they cleaned the damage before it got cold.
I’ve been close to bears in Kentucky, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Park as well as in the Pacific Northwest. One thing that got my attention was they could move very fast when they wanted to.

The Alaska brown is a grizzly and the Kodiak is a cousin to it. We have browns and blacks here.
My pop worked on a bear/fish study on Kodiak in the late 40s , way before the days of sedative dart guns and radio collars we have now.
He was a champion archer and was the guy chosen to mark the bears with dye, in ampoules on arrows. He was a small man and his recurve was only a 50# so he had to get within 25 yards of all those bruins to mark them. Some of his stories still make me frightened but he did ok and the guy who followed him with the big gun never had to destroy a bear to save dad .
Yup, flying here is different 🙂 and our weather is wacko.

Yup, milder temps in the days ahead for us here for a bit.
We’re smack up against mtns with icefields just east of us , James. The meteorologist folks say that affects our specific weather almost as much as the big patterns do. Had 60mph gusts overnight, now dropping into 30mph range, which brought heavy rain and wet, wet snow in.
I hope you get your snow- it makes the long dark bright and cheery 🙂
Living with bears gets wearing sometimes, that’s for sure. Living right on the edge of the forest and in the middle of their trails to town in search of dumpster pickings makes for many more “encounters” than I like at times.

Bears. Did someone tell me that the Kodiak and Grizzly were actually the same bear? Is that right? There was one they called the “Alaskan Brown Bear??” too. Which is which?
I watched an archer take an Alaskan bear with a recurve bow back years ago on TV. His name, oddly enough, was Fred Bear. He had a backup guy with a rifle. They are not to be trifled with I am told.

I read the upper vortex giving Alaska such cold weather is shifting to Siberia. That may give you milder, south westerlies with storms as the movement causes a west coast high pressure ridge to build on the west coast and finally send some cold air toward us. At last, we may have a snow storm on Saturday.
Thank heavens we have no bears.

Mageen, my mother had a tetnus reaction when we visited North Carolina. She had hives and began to swell. A service station attendant told us what it was. He knew because a similar reaction had nearly killed him.
I escaped mumps because our family may have an immunity to it. Our doctor thought I had a mild case of polio, but there was no muscular degeneration. All I know is I was very sick for eight weeks and was so slow to recover that I missed my first six weeks of kindergarten.
When we were in France, we had a chance to eat horse meat, but we didn’t do it.

It does stand though that the gratuitous insult routine comes from all sides and is not a gender dealie in essence.
We have had 4 feet of snow in last 2 weeks but are currently in the middle of a storm with high winds and buckets of rain. Avalanche danger is rising because of the rain- by the hour.
Daylight for us is well under 7 hrs and dropping by about 3 mins a day still.
Bears have bedded down for winter here, though still active in some other places, and that makes a big difference in having to be out and about in the long dark. The getting ready to get out of my truck and realizing mama bear is on the driver’s side whuffing at twins coming along on the passenger side and sitting still trying not to pee the seat until they move on is over for the year 🙂

Since you brought it up, Pfessor, I will share my experience. We have a friend whos’ husband tried to kill her four or five years ago. My wife and I gave her financial and psychological help. Everyone sees her as an accomplished woman with a responsible job and a good mother, but when the flashbacks come, she cries on our shoulders until we help her pull herself together.
The woman or man who leaves an abusive spouse is not the one who wrecked the family. The abusive spouse destroyed the family. Sometimes a spouse makes false accusations to gain financial or other advantage. I’ve watched that happen too. But if there is abuse, the fault lies with the abuser and no one else.
My experiences make me take delurkergurl’s accusations seriously.
Delurkergurl, I hope unintentionally, did something bordering on evil. Her emotionally charged comparison portrayed us as abusers and her group as the abused spouse. Her maleoviolant imagery has no connection to what has happened here.
A group of liberals had a good thing . People were congenial and regarded some as friends. Outsides were scorned until they left.Then, another group appeared, and most of the original people fled like whites from the new black neighbor. They rationalized their flight by complaining that the newcomers had ruined the neighborhood. They stayed away while muttering about the tragedy of what had been stolen from them. They chose to leave and blamed the interlopers for their personal decisions.
This is only a blog-forum. There is no danger. “Running away at the least little difficulty” is cowardice. “You’re entitled to your opinions guys?” Yes we do and we have as much right to post here as you have.

Pfessor – I recall my late mother-in-law (bless her!) telling me about one of her kids getting a tetanus shot. He turned out to be allergic to the serum which at that time was alleged to come from horses. The reaction damn near killed him. Its amazing to me how many people have never heard of this or forgotten it, just like a lot of folks have never heard of, experienced or forgotten the results of measles, mumps, pertussis and polio epidemics.

I’m mostly familiar with horse serum in the treatment of snakebite. When I was a kid, I used to hunt and motorcycle ride the mountains of West Virginia practically every day; that area is filled with timber rattlesnakes and snakebite is a constant concern.
They developed snake antivenin by injecting horses with larger and larger doses of snake venom and then processing their blood. If you let the blood clot, the liquid left behind is serum, which was used to treat snakebite. Unfortunately a large number of people were allergic to the horse serum itself.

The problem here has nothing to do with someone beating the hell our of his wife – a typical red herring fallacy – it’s a question of trying to maintain a nice place to visit, which is harder and harder to do here. Regarding horsemeat . . . this is a source of an awful lot of allergens for a large number of people. Be darned careful about ingesting this. I’ve ridden horses since a very, very early age and love them all dearly. I also know that this horse slaughter thing is a result of the economy. Many horses are starving as they are left to fend for themselves when let loose by owners who can no longer afford to care for them in any way. But horse burgers??? Not for me. Also, remember a thing called horse serum and how it was used many years ago? Thats when a lot of people found out they were allergic to horse meat.

UAW thanks for posting that link about horse slaughter. As much as I am an equine lover, I have been devastated at the abuse of unwanted equines in this economy. Starving abandoned horses on the roadside because owners cannot feed them or afford to euthanize them and just turn them loose to fend for themselves. I abhor the idea of inhumane treatment of slaughter houses but I also abhor the inhumane treatment of an animal left to suffer on it’s own.
As far as the rest of the comments, the cats are shitting in the sandbox again and who in the world wants to play in a dirty sandbox.
Attacks on your politics, your choice of music or food, no problem but as PF said pissing contests just make everyone want to leave.

That little exchange made me uncharacteristically mad for as long as it took to write.
In an episode of “Two and a Half Men”, Charlie Sheen turned over a new leaf and lived normally. Life turned against him at the end of the show, of course. He looked up to Heaven and said “but I was good..I was good.”
That’s how I felt.
My musical interests have expanded to Scandinavia and central Europe while searching for the Scandinavian part of my family’s heritage.
Uawtradesman, do you know if any of the proposed slaughtered horses are wild? Sometimes they are held at auction about 70 miles northwest of us. Wild horses have multiplied and outgrown their habitat. Agents thin the heard and put them up for adoption to the highest bidder. A few years ago, someone said the supply of horses was out running the supply of customers.

I want to try to stay out of the fussing, but James has a point. I hadn’t thought about it that way, but he’s right – it’s the people who disappear who are leaving M&H a wasteland. The annoying posters will always be here, stirring the s*it, but when there is nobody else posting, it looks to the rest of the world that there is nothing else going on here.
When there is no interesting conversation, “anon” and a couple of others get into a pissing contest and just throw links back and forth. That’s when I leave. I think James is right – it would be so easy to converse on music (my favorite), recipes, even a little politics for the braver of us, and the link-diarrhea artists would be drowned in the background. It’s clear that the blog owner has no interest in putting forth the effort to moderate and sans that, without regular people posting, I don’t think it’s worth anyone else’s effort to stay here.

First, I am not tied to the computer. I live on a farm, and if I cut brush or do other chores, it is a short walk to and from the house.

We are fortunate to have Senator Jim Webb representing us here in Virginia, although sadly he is retiring. I guess you can ride even a good horse to death and he’s had enough. The world is a battlefield now. I understand that. I understand the need to act quickly to stop a domestic plot involving nuclear weapons, a dangerous virus, or anything else where hours or minutes count. I understand the temporary need for at least parts of the Patriot Act.
This bill, I don’t understand. Why do we suddenly need the Army? To detain an American citizen indefinately is the stuff of Soviet Gulags. Saying the Army does not have to use its power until ordered to do so is also frightening.
I need to call my Senators and learn the truth. My thought is we all should.

We are culturally a Christian nation which is different from being a government- sanctioned Christian country.
The Patriot Act which probably saved lives is also a danger to us all. It should be more than questioned until it outlives its usefulness. Then, it should be killed.
Nancy Pelosi’s saying we needed to pass the Obamacare bill to learn what was in it applies to other legislation. Most of the bills are written by lawyers who use phrases subject to multiple interpretations. . Our late family lawyer said “the law is a wonderful thing. You can make it do anything you want it to do.”
We are in a three-month drought after our flood. Less than an inch of rain or snow is boring.

My Thanksgiving had no family members this year for 1st time ever. People were scattered amongst their OTHER extended families away from here .
Neighbors gathered for a potluck dinner including a new-to-Alaska, new bride who brought buttermilk pie. Wow!for buttermilk pie!

delurkergurl is right about keeping an eye on the exact language being proposed for law- is always true. As worried and upset as I am about Frankenfish maybe being licensed by FDA it is not truly banning the fish to refuse to allow the FDA to use any money to finish the certification process but that is how it was reported in the the news. We gotta get smarter about tracking down what those yayhoos are actually proposing and deciding if any of it is good law and will do what it’s being tooted up to do- no matter what side of the fence we’re on.

Regarding the military exercising powers domestically, it doesn’t surprise me. The Patriot Act is still being renewed, upgraded, and enforced. I don’t see the government willingly relinquishing any of the authority they have obtained over citizens during the past decade. At least not shy of a revolution… which is sort of happening…

Apparently it’s buried in a big piece of legislation that’s already being heavily revised. There is sufficient evidence that the real story is being spun to suit political agendas and we should wait for actual legislative wording instead of further spreading propaganda.
Sacrificing civil liberties for imagined terror threats is so Bush-era. Can’t really imagine it passing the Senate today. They can’t even manage to pass the stuff we DO want.

re: turkeys and holidays. My wife is descended from German Lutherans and the extended family – aunts, uncles, grandparents – have a communal party every Christmas in Wisconsin.
Her uncle is a real joker, and about ten years ago his wife was hosting the party. He snuck out and bought a Cornish Game Hen at the local butcher shop and secreted it inside the turkey. When it was all baked, he began to carve the turkey, opened the body cavity and pulled out the Game Hen and, with a look of mock horror, shouted, “Oh God, this one was pregnant!”
His wife, who had cooked the thing, passed out cold and struck her head on the table and had to be whisked away for stitches. I don’t think she ever forgave him. LOL

Our nephew is a human resources manager at a Target store, so he and his girlfriend couldn’t stay long at the Thanksgiving celebration at our daughter and son-in law’s.
Judging from the pictures our daughter’s friends sent before midnight, Black Friday should be a success. The whole family left in the early morning, but I went to bed. I have everything I need except to get home and see our dog.

Delurkergirl, thank you. Husband is now experiencing some of the most visible side effects of the chemo which I think means that the juice is working! During the previous program the side effects were pretty much limited to swollen ankles and feet (similar to pregnancy) and an inability handle cold stuff for about 24 hours after infusion. This time around it is a bit more dramatic. Will save specifics since most of us still have to eat up the leftovers from yesterday.
We rarely ever have bacon inasmuch as the stuff now seems to come from solid gold pigs, but yes, it is a great taste! As for butter, solid gold cows seem to be involved which means that we get that taste about once a year, during the holidays and boy is it great atop home-made buttermilk pancakes!
Best of all is pie. Yes, pie! Must have pie.

Helen, it’s so wonderful to hear from you again. Thank you for keeping up your traditional Thanksgiving letter to the family, and occupying any kitchen you choose to. Although I have learned to generally eat healthy foods, I also think bacon is pretty much the Secret to Everything. But to my horror, your post tells me I’ve been eating the wrong eggs for 60 years — please tell me how you incorporate vinegar into deviled eggs; how much, what type, etc. Looks like I’ll have to make a new batch for the Leftover gang coming tonight.
I usually stop reading the comments when the porch becomes infested with vermin, so for now it’s great to see some of the old, friendly crowd sharing Thanksgiving and Welcome Back thoughts.

AH…relief..Indescribably relief for indeed wondered ….Happy,HAPPY Thanksgiving to you and yours and to the amiable friends on the blog.Especially the first round of holidays without a loved is difficult but embrace the memories with love and be ever so grateful you do have them(there are those without even a morsel close to what you have in that regard) Do indeed wish that your postings were more frequent but ever grateful for what you share with us here abouts !! Winding up the year,can’t claim want a repeat of it for sure….even thinking perhaps it would be best IF the Mayans calculated correctly for it sure seems too many are quite hellbent on putting much asunder with no consideration of the full consequences that ALL will be burdoned with.

Thankful for . . . husband still here and on a better chemo treatment plan; son has had 3 job interviews and is in the process of possibly nailing the third one which he will know about in four weeks (Christmas?); the health of daughter and her family; my ability to keep putting one foot in front of the other no matter what, and Margaret and Helen. I honestly don’t know where I would be without any of you.

Oh, bless you, Helen. I still want to be you when I grow up.
My daughter is cooking today. She’s going to send the mac & cheese (fancy, but she does have a 5-year-old) over for me to bake at some point, and has promised to yell if she needs other help. That’s literally yell – we live across a small parking lot from each other.
I do Christmas unless we go to the family gathering, which won’t happen this year since she’ll be within a couple of weeks of her due date by then.

Helen,
I’m so sorry you lost Harold, and your comment about learning to spend as much time as possible with older family members struck a cord. I only thank god because I did learn that lesson a few few years before my dad died in 09, at the age of 84. Once gone, it can’t be taken back. Only the memories and the love survive.
You go girl, and make sure to add those extra sticks of butter and bacon grease. Unfortunately I can’t be with my family this year. I had a major heart attack and stents put in a couple months ago. So it’s hard to make a 2 hour drive each way to see them. But they were all called and e-mailed yesterday telling them I will be there in spirit..
