Texas Governor Rick Perry said he will introduce emergency legislation requiring women seeking abortions to first get a sonogram of the fetus and listen to a recording of the heartbeat.
Why? Well when someone has all the information, according to Perry, “the right choice will be made — the choice for life.”
I find it funny how universal healthcare is big government gone bad, but somehow the government crawling up my uterus and telling me what choice to make isn’t. Odd how giving patients information about end of life options is a “death squad for Grandma” but sonograms before abortions are simply souvenirs for the family photo album.
Rick Perry is a jackass. Period.
Did it ever occur to you Governor Jackass that some of those women who you plan to force to have a sonogram and listen for a heartbeat are young girls who have been abused… young women who are devastated that a wanted pregnancy has gone bad… poor women who just can’t afford to feed another mouth… scared women who have been raped… and even regular ‘ole women who made peace with their God and don’t need to hear from yours?
Governor, please take your big hair to church as often as you like. Get down on your knees and pray to your God everyday. Join the choir and sing his praises until the cows come home. Get it all out of your system so that when you walk into that Capitol building you are a little less inclined to blur the line between religion and politics and force your narrow-minded, black and white version of right and wrong on millions of people who just maybe – maybe – don’t agree with you and your backward ass group of right-wing zealots.
2,700,000 Texans voted for you. 2,100,000 Texans voted for the other guy. So many important problems to be solved and you decide to divide us even deeper.

In the last decade, pharmaceutical companies discovered 58% of new drugs, while biotechnology companies came up with 18%. Universities that transferred their discoveries first to biotechnology companies got credit for 16% of the drugs, and universities that transferred their discoveries first to pharmaceutical companies were responsible for 8% of the drugs.
You probably missed 2nd grade math or else you have a serious comprehension problem. I suspect it is mostly the latter.

Reads like Auntie Jean has absolutely no idea how difficult, complicated, expensive, and time consuming it is to introduce a new drug to market. 10-12 years on average from product discovery to mass introduction, and then only a 1/3 generate enough money to cover the development costs of previous failures.

Hi Congenial Gang,
Having studied it, worked in and been involved in it most of my adult life, I am a strong believer in the benefits of basic scientific research. Society as a whole has and will continue to benefit from the technology derived from such research. Most of the time we are blithely unaware of the multiplicity of such uses we take for granted in our daily lives.
The dedicated people that plod along working in various fields of research have to be well qualified by virtue of years and years of education and training. More often than not, the best results come from colleges and universities both private and government funded. It should be apparent that these people, from the PhDs, MDs, statisticians, janitors, cleaning ladies, clerical staff, maintenance, technicians, gofers, and all around grunt workers deserve to be paid a living wage for their efforts. Thus, basic scientific research provides jobs, jobs, jobs for hundreds of thousands of people. Grants for continuing research are and have always been hard to come by. It takes money.
When it comes to medical research, more and more often large multinational corporations have found that in the long run, their basic R&D investments can pay off handsomely when new drugs are introduced into the market. A proprietary drug is one that has a trade name and is protected by a patent. It can be produced and sold only by the company holding the patent. I don’t remember offhand how long patents are legally good for, but it used to be 17 years. At any rate, it’s a very long time before any other company can produce it and sell it as a ‘generic’ drug. In one sense, that’s only fair since it does involve sometimes years of research to discover, develop a drug and recoup the investment in R&D.
However, like so many other things in life, without oversight and regulation, the process is wide open to abuse, especially when there is a strong profit motive to get a drug on the market as quickly as possible. For example, a company may cut corners everywhere along the line in developing the drug, from skewing the statistical results to fudging on the possible detrimental side effects or even effectiveness. That’s where the FDA and NIH come in, as they should.
How often do we see TV commercials for drugs for almost every conceivable health problem. And all you have to do is wander around Wal-Mart and check out the price differential between ‘brand name’ over the counter drugs and their ‘generic’ counterparts. The same goes for prescription drugs if you ask your pharmacist.
Just before the holidays, my ‘boy toy’ of 57 years was diagnosed with a serious and chronic health issue requiring infusions of IVIG at the hospital, five hours a day for five days as an out patient. No, it is not cancer or anything life-threatening but it does involve severe to excruciating pain and is potentially quite debilitating in terms of his mobility. The infusions will probably have to be repeated periodically – – indefinitely.
This comment is getting pretty lengthy and it’s getting late, so I will pick it up tomorrow night and continue.

Some of my distant ancestors are Scandinavian. My wife’s maternal grandmother was on her own when she moved from Sweden to Minnesota when she was sixteen.
I checked on Sweden during the government health insurance debate. You are right, Sweden is not a socialist country. It is a welfare state. Our leaders should have borrowed from them. The result would have been better than what the Democrats thrust on us.

Hi Congenial Gang,
We all know what the words “Democracy” and “Constitution” mean, don’t we? Or do we? Different countries around the world have democratic governments with their individual Constitutions tailored to meet the needs of their own people.
An interesting example is the democratic country of Sweden and her Constitution. Now, you don’t have to take my word for it. You can look it up and read it yourself, in an English translation of course. While you are at it, why not look up the U. S. Constitution and re-read it to compare with Sweden’s.
The basic premise of Sweden’s democracy is the guarantee to the Right to Free Speech, i.e. to believe, think and say whatever one wishes. This fundamental principle applies to all Swedish citizens, from Neo-Nazis to Anarchists and everyone in between.
This law of democracy stands or falls on the rights to form a government and the freedom of organization.
The Parliament established the Freedom of the Press based on the democratic and socially acceptable restrictions as a contract for the framework of a civilized society. Thus, no one has the right to harm, harass or humiliate anyone else.
However, all democracies have their limits. The regulations regarding the Freedom of the Press expressly forbid four restrictions: 1.The publication of child pornography and/or certain depictions of violent sexual acts. 2. Inciting or exhorting someone to commit a crime. 3. Defamation or slander of another person. 4. The fourth prohibition is to engender the persecution of an ethnic or racial group.
Here is where it gets sticky. All constitutions and laws are human institutions subject to interpretation. These interpretations are invariably the reflection of personal experience and subjectivity. There is no such thing as pure objectivity in interpersonal relationships. So how does any democracy go about enforcing its laws? A valid question.
It has been our experience in dealing with the people we worked with and encountered when we have been in Sweden is that they were, with only a few exceptions; reasonable, cheerful, and delightful people with a delicious sense of humor. This applied to all of the Scandinavian countries too. Naturally, Sweden has its share of your garden variety petty and/or notorious criminal elements. That seems to have always been a universal human condition. Still, overall the countries are spotlessly clean and modern with a high standard of living. Beside that, Sweden has a lovely green, wooded landscape. We have never been there personally in the dead of winter, so I can’t say what the country is like year round.
Like every other country since time immemorial, Sweden has had her growing pains. But over the centuries, gradually since 1814 the Swedish people abandoned their ambitions toward empire building and ruling the world. Instead, they chose to concentrate their efforts and resources on the wellbeing of their own people and getting along nicely with their neighbors. It certainly seems to be working! Sweden is a member of the European Union and the United Nations.
Oh dear, some people in our country consider Sweden a Socialist country.

Wasn’t it P. T. Barnum who said, “There’s a sucker born every minute?” I ran across this little story I thought was an interesting biography. John Romulus Brinkley (1885-1942) was known as the “King of American Quackery.” After receiving a two-year medical degree from Eclectic Medical University, a Kansas City diploma mill, the not-so-good doctor began practicing in Milford, Kansas. An early scam of his involved injecting patients with distilled water to “increase their vigor.” Later he treated a tired old farmer who asked whether the doctor might consider implanting goat glands into him. Brinkley initially rejected the idea but soon afterward transplanted several undisclosed glands from a Toggenburg goat into the naïve farmer’s scrotum. Two weeks later, the ecstatic man claimed a complete rejuvenation and reportedly even sired a son, whom he aptly named “Billy”.
This serendipitous event launched Brinkley’s career as a purveyor of goat glands to the weary, for which he charged $750 – cash. That was a lot of money in those days. By 1920 the Brinkley clinic – with its herd of goats penned up in back – was thriving, receiving dozens of patients and thousands of inquiries each day thanks to radio, newspapers and direct-mail advertising. In the meantime he even managed to run two unsuccessful campaigns for governor of Kansas.
Until Brinkley’s death, these clinics continued to install glands in the gullible, eventually raking in a total of over $12,000,000. As would be expected, far more people either scoffed at his “treatments” or otherwise ignored him, much to his chagrin. They took their medical concerns to reputable sources.
Which brings us to Barnum/Brinkley/Murdoch. It looks as if Rupert Murdoch’s house of cards empire has taken an initial tumble in the UK. Is Fox News next? Oh well, what does Murdoch care? He has already made his billions, tax-free of course. There are always the Koch brothers to take up the slack.

Hi Congenial Gang,
We learned a whole lot more about earthquakes than we ever wanted to know during the 12 years we lived in CA. The entire state is a dense network of earthquake faults that are constantly shifting. In a way, that is a good sign because the small earthquakes takes the pressure off the big San Andreas Fault that can and probably will do major damage sometime in the future. As a result, the state has taken extensive precautions in building codes, regulations and other preparations.
Speaking of which, the New Madras Fault lies beneath a vast area of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. It is a huge one that has been quiet for actually too long. According to USGA data, it is overdue, and when it does happen, the destruction will be devastating.
We experienced so many little quakes in CA that we became quite blasé about them. We would hear a loud sudden crack and the house would shake. Sometimes I used to go out and check the pool. If the water was sloshing around, it was an earthquake. If not, it was a military jet breaking the sound barrier as it went over.
We did experience one fairly big one – 5.6. I woke up to the loud sound early in the morning. The house shook and the bed was swaying like a hammock. I was just getting ready to yell at our two teenage boys to knock it off when I glanced at the clock. From time to time they got to roughhousing and bumped into the walls. But at 6:00AM??? As it turned out ‘boy toy’ was in the stall shower and was bracing himself against the tile walls. Afterwards he said he never felt so naked in all his life!
Later we learned it lasted for about two minutes. That was a
l-o-n-g two minutes! The epicenter was probably 50-60 miles away from us. There was considerable damage with a number of deaths. Of course, all of the emergency personnel swung into action immediately. Our damage was negligible and not worth mentioning.
That earthquake happened to fall on our youngest son’s birthday. He was in grade school at the time. The schools were closed until the situation could be assessed. He felt he was so special that they closed all the schools in honor of his birthday!

Hi Congenial Gang,
Here’s my “fire” story to entertain you. When we lived in SoCal there were wild fires every season. Like earthquakes, we got kinda used to them on a small scale. Are you familiar with “Föhn or Foehn Wind Conditions”? They are a worldwide weather phenomenon. Roughly, they occur when prevailing winds die down. The Föhn Winds are hot winds that come from the opposite direction. The Santa Ana Winds are a perfect example.
When ‘boy toy’ was working at JPL, we live on a mesa in the San Gabriel Mountains 500 feet above the Los Angeles Basin in semi-peaceful co-existence with the rattlesnakes. Well, they were there first. Us emigrants came into their habitat and took over. They didn’t like us much.
Ordinarily we could see the smog lying in the Basin like a brown blanket. But whenever the Santa Ana Winds blew, it cleared out the smog and kept it a bay out over the ocean. Then the skies were clear and beautiful. The down side though was during the wild fire season the Santa Anas whipped up the fires into a frenzy. Twice, we had to evacuate because of oncoming fires.
We had a loose plan for what we would do in case of evacuation. The first time, we could see the plume of smoke in the sky east of us. ‘boy toy’ was at work. Our older boys were in school. A deputy sheriff came knocking on the door and told me we were under mandatory evacuation and to get out – fast – to the temporary shelter at the high school gym. Our youngest son was 4 at the time. So I got busy loading up the car with a portable safe we had for all our valuable papers, a few clothes and other necessary items to tide us over. The little guy was just as busy making numerous trips to the car with his toys!
Our neighbor was a good buddy with a couple of pre-schoolers getting ready to go too. We called our husbands, told them what was happening and where to find us. We hung out for most of the day together at the shelter until the officials came in with the all clear. The fire fighters had gotten the fire under control. In the meantime, we took them for a rare treat to lunch at McDonalds and all the kids there had a ball playing with our little guys’ toys. I’m not sure all of the toys made it home.
We went home, unloaded the cars and about that time the older boys came home from school and wanted to go swimming. I made a pitcher of Sangria and my neighbor and I sat out on the lanai playing Senior Life Guards to a pool full of kids. Then our husbands came home. Here we were on an idyllic late afternoon sipping Sangria with the kids splashing around and having a fine old time in the pool. Fire, what fire???? Then the dads joined the kids in the pool.
A few years later we had moved to PA. One night we were watching TV and there was a report of a CA wild fire. The news showed a guy up on his roof with a garden hose and smoke billowing all around him. Instantly we recognized him as one of our previous neighbors! As it turned out that time, they weren’t as lucky as we had been. The Santa Anas rapidly swept the flames clear across the mesa and burned 52 homes right to the ground. Fortunately, everyone got out in time and no one was hurt. CA fire fighters and civil defense people are right on their toes and know what they are doing.

It takes too long to try and post a comment at “72 Virgins………so I moved here.
Mother Nature is in a snit and on the rampage again, throwing temper tantrums right and left. The Midwest is drowning and the Southwest is burning down. And that’s just in our country. The very lives, homes, livelihoods and jobs of so many Americans are in jeopardy. Unfortunately, there isn’t much new about this.
When it comes to natural disasters, I have the dubious distinction of having lived through the eye of a Level 5 Hurricane and its aftermath out here; a 5.6 earthquake in CA and having to evacuate twice when the Santa Ana Winds were swiftly blowing a wild fire our way in CA. Several years later the whole mesa where we had lived burned 52 homes and properties to the ground. That’s not counting plenty of blizzards and other garden-variety weather related phenomenon I experienced in CO, MA and PA. That’s what I get for having lived so long!
On top of that, as my dear ‘Chatty Kitchen’ friends know, I have been coping with two major family health issues for the past 6-8 months. One with my ‘boy toy’. He just completed his third go-round of five days for five hours a day of infusions. The other is with my 89-year-old sister who has been in a nursing home for 6-7 years. I am her legal guardian. She was recently thrown out of Hospice Care because she rallied and is now too healthy!
It is amazing how resourceful people can be when they have to. But it is also comforting to know there are helping hands along the way too. That’s what family, good friends and trained professionals do best.
During his career, ‘boy toy’ used to go to Los Alamos, NM frequently. We have a very close friend whose son works for LANL at Los Alamos in the path of that raging fire. We are getting daily reports and updates on it but I won’t go into details. What bothers us most is the nuclear facilities there plus nuclear waste going back decades that nobody knows for sure where they all are. That’s scary! We sure got a tiger by the tail when we started tinkering with nuclear energy, didn’t we.
This is a very big country with a population in the millions. I think it is folly to expect the national or state leadership, regardless of political affiliation, to drop everything and go hold the hands of the individuals in the middle of their personal crises. Besides, most of the people are too busy hustling, trying to take care of their own affairs to rush off to a photo op, for heaven’s sake.
For the most part, the various governments are and have been doing the best they can to prepare for disasters of the magnitude we are seeing, often with limited resources. Sitting around moaning and groaning about who did or didn’t do what is non-productive. We need long range planning to meet such situations and I don’t mean bickering over funding for any number of chest thumping, headline grabbing minutiae. I don’t think I have to spell each one of them out for you, do I?
Progressives get to work and deal with problems. Regressives sit around and whine about the taxpayers money.

why not donate to the sexually abused women? For example, it is commonly assumed that rape victims who become pregnant would naturally want abortions. But in the only major study of pregnant rape victims ever done, Dr. Sandra Makhorn found that 75 to 85 percent chose against abortion. This evidence alone should cause people to pause and reflect on the presumption that abortion is wanted or even best for sexual assault victims.
Several reasons are given for not aborting. First, approximately 70 percent of all women believe abortion is immoral, even though many feel it should be a legal choice for others. Approximately the same percentage believe abortion would be just another act of violence against their bodies and their children.
Second, some believe that their child’s life may have some intrinsic meaning or purpose which they do not yet understand. This child was brought into their lives by a horrible, repulsive act. But perhaps God, or fate, will use the child for some greater purpose. Good can come from evil.
Third, victims of assault often become introspective. Their sense of the value of life and respect for others is heightened. They have been victimized, and the thought that they in turn might victimize their own innocent child through abortion is repulsive.
Fourth, at least a subconscious level, the victim may sense that if she can get through the pregnancy, she will have conquered the rape. By giving birth, she can reclaim some of her lost self-esteem. Giving birth, especially when conception was not desired, is a totally selfless act, a generous act, a display of courage, strength and honor. It is proof that she is better than the rapist. While he was selfish, she can be generous. While he was destroying, she can be nurturing.
Most abortions in the united states are African American, Hispanic or White teenagers, 47 million abortions happen per year and growing, and your complaining about a sonogram.
Women cry to be treated equally and they are so strong and independent…. they chose to terminate life because of “how hard it will be” how you didn’t plan for it”
or some lame reason about how they made a mistake and will end a LIFE because of it. Planned Parenthood will do nothing with a donation, they don’t even are about the women and young girls who walk in. I am sick and tired of abortion being justified for the few rape or incest cases…

I agree with everything you said. I am a male, and I’m not gay (not that it really matters but to some it does I suppose) and regardless of the fact that I cannot give birth, I believe your body your choice. If we start controlling peoples extremely intimate personal choices (this being a MAJOR one at that) what comes next? Will we have to send in an application for permission to use the bathroom? What else on our bodies will they want to control next? I may only be 19, buri have a lot of life ahead of me, and I don’t want to have to ask permission to do things to/with my body, and I know that women don’t either. It should be anyones business. Now if you have your child, and wait 2 years and decide you dot want it, and kill it, that’s wrong. But when it is inside your womb, living off of your body, as a guest, then you have that choice. Whether someone feels that it is morally correct or not, it isn’t important. It’s their body. Not yours. You are doing something to yourself, you aren’t killing another woman’s baby. That’s pretty much all I have to say. What else do they want to control?

It is always fascinating to see and hear those who will never have to confront one of life’s many issues, give advice about that issue. Whether it is Rick or the Pope, neither can ever expect to be pregnant and have to carry an unborn full term. It is unlikely that either will have to endure being raped and impregnated by a relative or by one who is a less than desirable mate. So, just like those without children who give parenting advice; those who have never served in the military who like to “rattle the national sabres”; and those who do not have to be concerned about financially devasting illnesses, their advice and certainly their governance should be disregarded. Their advice is empty and meaningless and their governance is misguided. As the old saying goes, “they don’t have a dog in the fight.”
It would be good legislation to give a sonogram and record the heartbeat of some of these faux leaders and faux christians to see if there is a heartbeat, because they never seem to have any compassion or feelings toward anything or anyone unless they are a wealthy contributor to their cause or agenda.
There should be no concern of secession of the states run by these “blowhards” because their economies are very snugly connected to the federal teat. It’s just a battle cry to whip up the passions of those who want someone to do their thinking for them.

Helen, you just promoted one of my favorite organizations, Planned Parenthood.
They do so much good work in education, physical exams, screening and treatment for STDs, and on and on. Last I heard abortions make up perhaps 5% of their work.
In the other 95%: They will help with fertility treatments, if that’s what you need (not the whole gamut, obviously, but the basics that are enough for most people). They will prescribe The Pill if that’s what you want. They have classes on “natural” contraception if that’s what you want, because it’s not just Catholics who are leery of The Pill. They teach teens about their bodies, and through peer outreach they help teens to develop strategies for NOT engaging in sexual activity until they are ready, and when they are ready, to be prepared with contraception and protection against STDs that really work.
As far as I am concerned, they do more to PREVENT abortions than any other organization in this benighted country, thanks to their educational programs and their intelligent and matter-of-fact approach to the subject of fertility and sexuality.
Margaret Sanger was a public health nurse working in the tenements who was shocked by the incidence of abortion and maternal death from sepsis among the women she treated. Contrary to the lies told about her by forced-birth zealots, she was trying to PREVENT abortions by educating women and men about the means of regulating their fertility — and for this she was jailed under the obscenity laws of the day.
She is one of my heroes. She was not a saint, let’s make that clear, but heroes usually are not saints. They are courageous beyond what you and I can imagine.
PP was founded by a courageous woman, and to this day there are courageous people working there — people who have had their lives threatened, who have been stalked, who have had their CHILDREN followed home from school, and some of whom have been injured or even killed in their work.
Thanks to having good medical coverage most of my life, I have never needed their services for any reason, but after reading Margaret Sanger’s autobiography when I was about 21, I have made a point of donating to them ever since. That’s 42 years, my dears. I even sent a larger-than-usual donation to them for George W. Bush’s birthday after he did something particularly egregious during his presidency — a lot of us did, and I hope he got a card from PP letting him know about all the money he raised.
The religious wingnuts like to pretend that no one else has a pipeline to God and if we don’t agree with their narrow views we are all damned. Pfft. Thank God we live in America and not Saudi Arabia, but the wingnuts still bear watching because they sometimes talk as though they like that system better. I’m with Thomas Jefferson, who said that it mattered not to him whether his neighbor worshipped 20 gods or no god, so long as he was a good citizen. (I paraphrase Jefferson freely.) The religious wingnuts do not by any means speak for all people of conscience nor all people who worship a divinity by whatever name. They are entitled to their opinions, but that is all.
In my thealogy, the Goddess is clear: a woman’s fertility is her own business, and women are moral agents with the capacity to make adult decisions and to live with them. Turning that capacity over to the state or to any man is wrong on so many levels: I have known more than one woman who was coerced into having an abortion she didn’t want by her father, husband, or boyfriend. The wingnuts want the state to have that same power on the flip-side, the power to deny an abortion to a pregnant woman who believes that it is necessary. They may take that power, but it is not theirs by right.

So, the same party who calls for smaller government calls wants to be so small they fit inside my uterus.
I guess that makes sense.
But, I don’t think it really makes sense. I think abortion is really just a wedge issue and these people calling for smaller government so small it fits inside my uterus don’t care about the babies it claims to want to save. They just care about staying in office and their stance on abortion is one way to do that.

Well at least it’s good to know the type of projects that require emergency legislation and tax payer’s money. Also handy to know the level of humanity, feelings and reality of life that are acceptable.
In light of this I have some suggestions for a few more bits of legislation that are essential.
1) Children who have a parent that commits suicide need to watch an in-coffin video of their mother/father decomposing to show the reality of suicide.
2) Every Super Bowl there must be 95 people picked out of the crowd at random and killed with 5 convicted felons to understand the reality of how effective predator drones are against “targets of importance”.
3) Anyone who proclaims the divinity of Jesus needs to be lashed to wood and have metal spikes driven through their extremities to understand and experience the reality of the path that they choose for themselves in life.
4) If you smoke tobacco then you must submit to a government official puncturing one of your lungs to demonstrate the ultimate consequences of your choice.
5) If you exceed the mandated Body Mass Index then you must have diabetes induced in your system and carry a state sanctioned weight in order to understand the gravity of your situation.
For politeness’ sake I’ll rephrase my feelings about Perry and simply say where the heavens do these mobius-feathering do-gooders get off preaching this self righteous diarrhoea and then enshrining it in legislation that ultimately must be enforced at the point of a gun.

Can’t believe this is still going on. Perhaps Gov. Perry would like to go back to the days when sex was for procreation only and outlaw any other kind. Then the guys could go to prostitutes (who don’t get monthly medical checks) for relief and bring STD’s back to their wives, and the prostitutes could get back street abortions when needed which would kill off a goodly number of them. How’s that for a solution for all this unbridled sex and unwanted pregnancies. I’ll vote for Perry’s ideas when there is a guarantee for every child born insuring good medical care, daycare and education through a minimum of 20 years. He’s putting the cart before the horse.

The majority of abortions take place very early in the pregnancy. An embryo’s heartbeat isn’t always detectable at 4 weeks, and sometimes it isn’t heard until well into the fetal stage. Perhaps the Governor should look into the science and biology before he sets up this protocol.
And what does the Governor propose in such a case? That the woman must return for ultrasounds until the heartbeat is heard loud and clear?
The ethics of abortion have been debated, and I’m not going to continue that debate here.
What I want to know is why the Governor has requested taxpayer money to pay for these ultrasounds (and I assume the doctor won’t be working for free), while supporting cutting funds for programs for babies and children and families.

This is just downright cruel of Perry, especially since many women don’t want abortions, but get them because they are pressured by their men, who claim they are not ready to be fathers. I think it would be only fair that every birth father should be forced to see sonograms and hear heart beats as well. I think that’s the biggest reason why the pro-life movement has failed to overturn Roe v. Wade to date. They refuse to face the fact that it takes TWO to create a life, and it takes TWO to fail to the point where that life ends before it starts in abortion. They are so busy villifying women, they completely ignore a full 50% of the problem. Has anyone ever solved a problem by dealing with only half of it?

You can’t be pro choice if you think government has the right to interfere in a woman’s decision about her own body.
I’ve been a monthly giver to Planned Parenthood for years. But Planned Parenthood isn’t enough. Those of us who want to protect a woman’s right to choose (and keeping a baby IS a choice) need to support pro-choice candidates (yes, make it a litmus test), donate to NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), write and telephone (visit if you can) your member of Congress to tell your story and make sure your voice is heard. Believe me, when the anti-choice forces aren’t assassinating doctors, picketing family planning clinics or working to censor sex education classes, they are out there in force, doing the same things.

I was a 23yr old divorced mother of 2 on welfare going to school ( so I could get OFF welfare). I was dating a fellow student and had 1 night out ( ahh to actually have a date, no kids was wonderful). Oops I got pregnate, since I was not sexually active I was not on birth control and HE said he had a condom. WEll, I was horriably sick, trying to go to school & raise these 2 wonderful children I had…THEY deserved better from me. I made the choice not to have another child while still on welfare and on my own. I have NEVER regretted that decision. Dingbat didnt even want to pay for the abortion, so much for his contribution. It cost me 350.$ and back then I got 302.$ a month for me & 2 kids on welfare. No free fuel programs..we froze during the winters. Oh and I went around to the church during the blizzard of 1978 to see if they could help me with heat..NO. I finally scraped up the money at the end of my 3rd month of pregnancy for my abortion. I watched in a clear jar a almost 4month old fetus and all I saw was blood, no tissue, no little arms..nothing. So dont let those little posters scare you.
I went on and graduated and was the 1st women computer technician in the company Becton Dickinson where I worked. I eventually married an engineer I met and had 2 more healthy wonderful children. All are grown now and my biggest fear is that my daughters and grandaughters wont have the same option open to them.
Noone wanted to help with my day to day care of those 2 little kids who were ALLREADY alive. I was looked down on when I used my food stamps. I washed our clothes in a bathtub for 1 full year and dried them on bannisters and string I had hung around the apt. I had no car, I walked everywhere pushing my cheap umbrella stroller with the groceries in it and the 18month old walking haha. My kids didnt know what Mcdonalds was or a movie or a new outfit.
So Helen My hat is off to you, we have to think about the women and children who are already here and that they have medical and food and a warm place to live before we worry about some tissue that might end up in a jar. Untill there are no homeless children and no FOSTER children I dont think we have a right to tell someone what to do with there child. If your that worried about another life lost then march your butt down to social services and bring a check or take in a foster child…till then you dont have the right to say anything.

I am pro choice as I don’t feel the government has any place deciding this issue. I am not for abortions however as a personal decision. I do not have a right to impose my beliefs on anyone else. That said someone has to be taking up the rights of the children being aborted and see to it that someone speaks on their behalf and looks out for their best interest. By the way, the new anti-abortion bill the Republican house is pushing doesn’t just outlaw governmental money being used for abortions as that is already covered by law. The real propose of the bill is to provide that insurance costs, even those completely paid with private funds (such as those paid by a company and/or its employees, or by individuals), will not be tax deductible. This is their way to make sure employers do not include abortion as a covered medical expense under their insurance plans.

The real propose of the bill is to provide that insurance costs, even those completely paid with private funds (such as those paid by a company and/or its employees, or by individuals), will not be tax deductible. A majority of South America is Roman Catholic, where it is against their religion to even take birth control pills, if they were even available, and abortion is unthinkable to them because the pointy hat in Rome will cast them into brimstone and fire. But people have sex anyway, and babies are born into abject poverty. I tried to find the special I saw just a few years ago about the street children in South America, millions of them, addicted to sniffing glue because it takes away the hunger pangs. Some were as young as 3 years old. Some are shot like stray dogs. I could not find that particular program offhand, but here is an article that gives you an idea:

I just found your blog, and have to say this post is dead-on! But I do have one question: Am I the only one who wonders if Governor Hypocrite will take the thank you notes from the donations to PP in his name and use them to claim a tax deduction? It would help keep some money out of the hands of the ‘gummint’, and I doubt he’d see that as a bad thing.
I’m originally from a locale very close to TX, but moved to a far more civilized state over a decade ago. I have to say I don’t miss the constant, forceful intrusion of religion into politics, law and women’s health care! (Not to say it doesn’t exist here, but it’s MUCH less.)

Alive and Well thanks for the imagined donations in my name…im sure the money will do a lot of good. It is a shame however with all that money that you we not able to pay for an education to articulate any kind of an argument with any merit.
In my part of the world it takes two to create a child. That tells me that two people have an opinion in the matter. Also just because some suggest that a person be informed before making a choice to end a life doesn’t mean anyone is taking control. No one is saying you can’t have that abortion. Mikat, you make a lot of assumptions in your argument. It is a common tactic used against the Republican party to insite hate. You will find there are many people who do not have situational ethics. For those of us who do not we tend to believe what is right or wrong is that way regardless of the situation that is at hand. Rape is always wrong no matter the reason for it. Murder is always wrong regardless of the reason for it. Just because a new life can bring some hardships on those adults who made the choice to create life doesn’t change what is right or wrong, at least not if your ethical and moral. I am sorry if you consider these babies as inconvenient, wrong is wrong. It sounds like to me that you want to have these unborn children aborted to make your lives easier, and I find that morally reprehensible.

It isn’t about the money, but talking about the cost of these ultrasounds is talking Republican language. When it suits them I guess.
The argument that a woman should have to see her baby’s face before she has an abortion is a powerful emotional one! However, generally speaking, at the stages of pregnancy where abortion is legal there isn’t a discernible face on the ultrasound. Should she also view videos of children who are homeless, abused, profoundly disabled or in prison before she has a baby she doesn’t want? Should a woman whose unborn baby doesn’t have a brain have to view the death of babies born without a brain before choosing?
Fortunately, we live in a country where women who view abortion as murder are not required to have them. Praise the Lord!

The Repubs just added billions to the national debt when they hijacked the extention of unemployment benefits with the stipulation that the extention of the damn Bush tax cuts for the wealthy be part of the deal.
Their repeal in the House of healthcare means they want to increase taxes to small businesses. They work for no one but David and Charles Koch and other huge corporation owners, plus now they owe their souls to communist China and other hostile countries because of the Supreme Court decision allowing any business from any country to buy our politicians. Any country can and will donate to the Repubs because they see themselves controlling the politicians. Repubs are the puppets of the wealthy, big business and foreign dictatorships.

Mikat, good post! The toughest outreach anyone can do is prison ministry. What you hear all too often from prisoners in general is “I wish I had never been born. I wish I had been aborted.” In sum, the only thing worse than having an unwanted baby is being one. Would you believe it is next to impossible to hold together any outreach group on prison ministry? The reality of of the unwanted in those circumstances can really blow your mind.

I have to agree, we have covered this “subject” many times. How ever I am going to come at it from a slightly different angle. You see, all those “christians” want these precious babies to be born. They don’t stop to think beyond that. Babies are cute and adorable and so cuddly. They are completely dependant for many years on a parent(s). They require food and clothing and doctors and education and other “basics”. That the good Christians of this country do not want to provide because it may cost them a few extra pennies each month. Then one day all these precious babies become adults who need jobs and housing and healthcare. You see, there is no country in this very small world that can provide healthcare, jobs, housing and FOOD to a population that increases 100% worldwide. Throw in the fact that a large percent of these grown up “babies” will have been raised by people who are uneducated, poor, angry, acoholic, abusive, criminal or mentally unstable or just plain do not want them. The chances of these kids growing up to be criminals are pretty good. The chances of more and more people needing welfare and foodstamps grows as well. It all comes back to the all mighty dollar. Christians and old white men HATE when the government takes their money and spends it on the “undeserving”. Look at the big picture people! Oh, I forgot, a large percent of those adorable babies will be “non white”…. The horror!!! Abortion is generally the last resort for women. It is never taken lightly and I dare say that there are very few women that don’t understand the serious decision they have to make. Keep it legal and keep it safe.

Once again the abortion issue has been brought forth here at M&H’s. How many times is this over the past few years? The reactions in the comments above are about the same as always – a hot button issue with emotions running high. And of course, since it involves sex, it brings out the immature and curious kids who really should be doing their homework instead of playing with grown-up blogs on the computer.
My idealistic feelings are that every child should be wanted, cherished, fed, clothed, loved, educated and given the opportunity to realize his/her potential. That is idealism. Then there is reality. Whether we want to face it or or not, there is a side of life in any society that is not always so rosy. So what are the options in such cases? To be judgemental? To have control freaks in a position of power heap guilt and fear upon girls and women who find themselves in terrifying circumstances?
I believe that Planned Parenthood provides a vital service in educating not only the female of the species on what those options are from a medical, scientific, spiritual and psychological perspective that is rational – and legal. The masculine members of the species could take a little time to educate themselves regarding responsible and respectful behavior for themselves as well as the feminine members in their lives.
I have essentially said all this before here at M&H’s, so enough already.

Hold onto to yor hats folks. Everytime Helen posts about this subject old, white men from across the nation begin to chime in about protecting their unborn children. Maybe if they spent less time looking at porn on-line they wouldn’t have to worry about unborn children. It is so clear to me now, I am amazed it took me so long to figure it out. I was always astounded how so many of the posters on here are so inept at formulating the most basic argument without having to resort to personally attacking someone. Helen’s post has opened my eyes as to why that is. As the co-ring leader of this page she is leading the way and her sheep are following her example. Helen, you are what is wrong with our country. Your bigoted and ignorant way of thinking breeds hate and intolerance. We all have different ideas and things we believe in. That doesn’t make them automatically wrong, just different. I urge you Helen to find it within yourself to stop this hate mongering and consider the damage you do to those who you seem to influence so profoundly. My faith teaches me that there is a special place reserved for people like you who try and spread the message of hate and intolerance as you do.
That said, Governor Rick Perry has a belief and a point of view that differs from my own. I understand where he is coming from and I can respect that without attacking the man personally. Matter of fact I respect him for sticking to his beliefs and acting accordingly.
My personal beliefs are as follows. Both the mother and the baby have rights. The hard part is drawing the line as to where the baby’s rights trump the mothers rights. My personal belief is that I draw the line for life as I do with death. A person is considered legally dead when all brain activity stops. Conversely I believe life begins when we can measure brain activity in the fetus. My current understanding is that we can measure neurons firing is in the 3rd month. With very few exceptions a woman can discover she is pregnant by this time and make a choice as to keep or abort the pregnancy. Now I understand people will come up with a 101 special circumstances that might warrant special consideration but this is just a broad definition that would define the typical pregnancy.
With my wife being almost 7 months pregnant this subject really touches home for me so I can understand the passionate feelings from both sides of the issue. Having gone to the first ultrasound I could never have made a choice to abort the child for any reason. I can understand why the governor wants to have women have that firsthand experience of hearing that heartbeat, it is very powerful. I guess I don’t see a problem if what he is suggesting isn’t stopping all abortions, which he is not and I would be opposed to if he was.
In all cases in my opinion we should make our choices fully informed on the facts. I sense most of the objections are because many of you feel that this information might change a person’s mind. We are talking about ending a life here people. This should never be done lightheartedly and always having considered every possible option. I want a person to consider adoption, abortion, keeping the child. I want to person to hear the heartbeat they are about to decide to stop. If at the end of the day when all the facts are weighed, the person or persons decides to abort, so be it. But to fight to keep that person ignorant to me is morally questionable.

Do you think a sonogram forces a woman to take something this serious even more seriously? No. It forces women in their darkest hour to be subject to humiliation by a man who only has the power to humilaite them simply because he is Governor. What an abuse of power. sorry, folks. I don’t agree with much of anything that’s been posted here.
I understand that abortion is legal. But I view it as a loss when it happens–just as I view a miscarriage as a loss. I sure don’t agree with the sort of sentiment expressed by kimwim (if that is remotely how he/she feels as opposed to just being a truly tasteless pimp)–that’s offensive. And I guess I don’t think it’s a subject for humor, so I’m disappointed with the hosts for making it one.

I’d also like to pose a question to all those that think life begins at conception. What would you have done with my molar pregnancy? Would you have allowed the D&C to remove the fertilized egg that was never going to become a viable fetus?
Abortion is a decision for a woman to make based on sound medical advice, her faith, and her circumstances. It is not one to be taken lightly, nor one that people not knowledgeable about the particulars of that pregnancy should interject themselves in. If you don’t want big government in healthcare, then you don’t get to decide what treatment I get.

Perry must be invested in the sonogram industry. Much like Chertoff and the airport scanners. I am just grateful abortions declining anually. That until the economy tanked. Now economics is driving some of these. Too bad the GOP doesn’t have any real solutions. It is more their style to usurp the rights of women.
As a pro-life believer, I feel they should concentrate their efforts on ramping down the war industry. That by far does more damage to the living than the abortion industry. Education and birth control vs. ignorance and abstinence.

I already contribute monthly to Planned Parenthood and have so for years. I actually chose to have my third child after talking to a counselor at Planned Parenthood in 1975. I was 39 at the time and figured I was too old. She was really wonderful, and told me her mother had had her at age 45 and she turned out fine. I made the CHOICE to have that child. I completely support the right of a woman to have the opportunity to make that choice– whatever her choice may be. I remember in the 50’s when girls went to have a D & C ” to help with their periods”. (dilation and curetage or those of you not in the know.) We all knew why. We don’t need to go back to the dark ages. Remember, abortion is a choice, and sometimes a wrenching one, but it IS a choice and needs to remain so, SAFELY.

Helen, thank you for your wisdom. Planned Parenthood offers one alternative, while there are other organizations that offer other alternatives – at least one uses sonograms, but they are funded by private donations. Both sides have their own agendas. But none of them are funded by the government. I am glad that women have options available to them.
The one thing that shouldn’t happen is for the state or federal government to be involved in any way except keeping the illegal abortions from happening. There is no reason we should return to the dark ages when women sought abortions in dirty back alley rooms. Some survived, some did not. Some were left sterile. And there was no one who could help them with the emotional trauma.
The piece that is always missing when they start talking about taking away a woman’s right to choose is the concern and care for the woman, physically and emotionally. Deciding to have an abortion is a traumatic and wrenching decision, one that most women don’t make lightly. The decision to have a baby or not is one that stays with a woman the rest of her life. The last thing she needs is to have some man (or woman, in the case of Christina R above) telling her what she should do. And even worse are the people who assume they know what is in the heart of someone else, and set themselves up as a religious judge and jury.
Concern for life should apply to a person’s whole life, not just the beginning. Once that child is born, he will need health care and education – those are the very things the republicans want to cut first. They don’t care about the lives of those who already have been born.

Davida Johnson was frightened away from Planned Parenthood by protesters. Instead of forgoing the abortion, she instead went to Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s filthy, abattoir-like abortion mill. She changed her mind when she saw the gruesome conditions of the clinic, but Gosnell beat her (yep-physical assault) until she submitted to the procedure.
If we shut down the legitimate clinics, places like Gosnell’s will thrive. There will always be a demand for abortions – let’s keep them safe, legal, and the clinic clients unmolested by protesters.

What a GREAT idea, donating on ‘behalf” of Perry…can think of others who too deserve such honors in regard to this particular as well as other “causes” that are quite apropos as well,semi gbo/lol !!! A productive way to get OUR messages out and about though as a ‘given” likely to still be IGNORRED by those in the various positions that have “authority/control” over OUR rightful ‘RIGHTS” to make OUR personal decisions !!)
Wondering too just where the $$$ are to come from to PAY the costs of such…figure somehow they will bill the “patient” for the added cost of the procedures and figure it a justified “taxation” caused by personal responsibility issue/etc.

I’m so glad to see a new post from you. Thanks for yet another brilliant piece. I’m Christian, Pro-choice, and I do not subscribe to the Catholic Church’s declaration that life begins at conception. I believe a fetus becomes a human being when it draws its first breath. The best way to prevent abortions is education and available birth-control, things the ‘Fear Right’ are against. Abortions and mis-carriage are emotionally painful for those who have them, but they are made even more traumatic by people intent on crying ‘shame’ and putting even more roadblocks in the way of their personal and private choice. Those who are oppossed to womens right to control their own bodies should read ‘Freakonomics’.

What bothers me most about “pro-life” Christians is that they’re really “pro-birth.” Once that fetus starts converting oxygen, it becomes a “mistake” that they don’t want their tax dollars to support. Hypocrisy at best; judgmental death by bureaucracy at worst.
If life has such sanctity, put your money where your mouth is and fund programs like Head Start, education programs that deal with health issues BEFORE women get pregnant and treat reproductive health like the biological function that it is, and not the religious propagation of the species dogmatic wedge issue that it has been allowed to become.

What’s amazing to me is that so often it’s men who speak out against abortion. Men. Not women. Women, who carry, gives birth to, and in very many cases end up raising the child alone and with neither physical nor financial support. Perhaps Gov. Perry should involve and encourage his church and his own wallet into making copious donations toward helping young women who are raising children alone. Housing, education, child care, food, medical, clothng…..the list is endless.
My guess is the wallets will remain firmly closed and tucked away.

Couldn’t agree more about Rick Perry. Like most Repugs, “save the unborn, no matter what the expectant mother wants or needs”, but deny any health care or any other social welfare programs to help once those children are born. And they call themselves Christian.

As a pro-choice former rape victim who benefited from birth control pills and condoms provided by planned parenthood all through HS and post-rape care after it happened (after college), I appreciate your desire to protect the rights of a woman to choose.
However, I also know that at Planned Parenthood, the language provided to girls is that it is simply ‘fetal tissue.’ And they claim the fetus feels no pain. When I went in for care after my rape the first thing they did was talk about my abortion options – even though my primary goal was to get treated for the venereal disease(s) the creep gave me and make sure I didn’t have PID that would prevent my future ability to plan for parenthood.
I don’t know what my choice would have been if I had been impregnated, and I know my feelings on abortion also come from a religious place so while I don’t think I could ever have one, I respect a woman’s right to choose.
But I also think a woman should make an informed choice. If the fetus feels pain, I would want to know as part of making my choice. If the fetus is more child than fetal tissue, I would want to know that as well. Sonograms cost money, so they are discouraged when you are trying to get an abortion at Planned Parenthood. I appreciate this legislation because it gives women and girls the information they should have to make an INFORMED choice.

Excellent points Helen and for those who exited Texas upon the election of “George the Lesser” when they trashed my buddy Ann Richards, I was amazed to see that folks continue to vote against their own best interests in that state.
Have only been back twice in the 20 years since I left, and that was to 1. attend the funeral of a loved uncle, and 2. to attend a family reunion up in Wascom.
Perry shows his butt every time he opens his mouth. Like most conservative “christians” he is an embarrassment to religious people everywhere. And like a typical conservative rethuglican male, he believes that he has the dominion over a womans reproductive functions. Frankly, women should be up in arms over people like Perry and others who rant about the life of “an unborn child” and their stupid statement that life begins at conception. Like who told them? GOD? Sorry, but my God would never talk that kind of stuff.

Missed you! A lot! Happy New Year. Once again, you have hit the target spot on. Changed my mind about the position of the church I was baptised into as an infant when I discovered how many pregnancies end before they are even diagnosed. Began to wonder why there weren’t any funerals for such. Also could not understand why funerals were denied for pregnancies that miscarried further into the cycle or even for stillborns. The church I grew up in hasn’t a moral leg to stand on. As far as I am concerned they are right down there with the Westboro bunch.

Hello Margaret,
You make such a valid point, and frankly I hadn’t made the connect. Why are so many people anti-government until abortion rights come up. I believe a woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy for several reasons. And I definitely believe that we need laws or something that will allow us to end our own lives if we are terminally ill and in paint. I for one do not want anybody to see me lying helpless and dying in a bed – or worse, end up in a horrible “nursing home”.

I will have to say that I am definitely pro-life…. however I so completely agree with you about the inconsistencies about the so called “Christian” party – the Republicans. It makes me sick to my stomach. Their actions are rarely WWJD despite the fact they wear it on their sleeve. I love that Obama is the first person to offer a decent solution to unwanted pregnancies: let’s make efforts to prevent them. I forgot how he said it but it was brilliant. I agree, Helen, the pro-lifers are in general more interested in protecting the unborn life that they disregard what is happening with the mother. ALL are precious in God’s eyes. I do not know the answer. But I don’t think they currently have it right. i think that if Jesus were to walk on the earth today, things would be not be as some would expect. Thank you once again for pointing out such indiscrepancies and all done under the name of Christianity.

This is something that Focus on the Family has been promoting for years with big budgets providing sonogram equipment used to scare women. They have teamed up with the Catholic church as well as Orthodox Jews in this endeavor. I know someone who worked for them traveling around to set up equipment.
Based on the theory they espouse, that life begins at conception, tell me why do we not have funerals and burials for miscarriages?

Texas Governor Rick Perry said he will introduce emergency legislation requiring women seeking abortions to first get a sonogram of the fetus and listen to a recording of the heartbeat.
FL tried this about a year ago but Charlie Crist vetoed it. Our new Governor, Medicaid Fraudster Rick Scott is chomping at the bit to sign it.
