(Seven Posts in Seven Days – Day 7 …Thank God)
No matter what religious views you have (or don’t have) there are at least a billion people (or more) in the world who don’t agree with you. Maybe that is your cross to bear… your stone to carry… your spell to cast… your opinion to defend ( or not defend)… But that is the world we live in. When it comes to God none of us have a monopoly.
No matter how you vote in this election, several million will have disagreed with you. When it comes to politics, we don’t have a monarchy.
When I think back to John Kennedy, I remember that people had serious concerns with his being Catholic. And if my memory serves me correct (and that is always questionable), one of the main concerns was that he might have to put the Pope before the country. It was a valid concern and a fair question to ask.
But somewhere along the way the questions stopped being questions and started being accusations. I read some of the comments on this blog over the weekend and I just have to roll my eyes. I believe I wrote in support of freedom from religion as well as freedom for religion. They can coexist even if the panel on The View cannot.
The ability of our leaders to remain true to their own beliefs while respecting the beliefs of others is our greatest challenge just as it has been our greatest accomplishment.
So to come full-circle, I called Sarah Palin a bitch because I see a woman who took a very colorful world and decided to paint it in black and white. I have visited Alaska. It has more to offer than just oil and snow.

President Obama gave a great speech tonight! I was in Missouri in 1970 and I asked at a gas station where a person can find a place to live. He pointed down one road and said, ‘blacks live down there’ and pointed in another direction and said, ‘whites live down that a way.’ I lived in the white area and no blacks lived there. A fellow soldier got orders for VietNam and I asked my landlord if this other soldier and his wife could stay in my spare room to save money so he could have money for his 30 day leave, prior to shipping to Nam. She said yes.
I did not mention that the fellow and his wife were black. I instantly went from being a ‘good ol boy’ to ‘black lover.’ I was amazed at how quickly people turned on me.
We now will have a black President in my lifetime.
I am so pleased. After Bush/ Cheney, we need change and we got it!

I never knew my father’s mother – she died in 1945 when he was just 9 years old. I am named for her though – Alice Cecelia Devine Carney! Seems like such a big name to give a baby. I am proud to have her name as I have been told she was a lovely woman.
My mother’s mother died when I was four days shy of my 18th birthday and she was my best friend.
She had a hard life in rural Maine – 15 kids total, her 2 oldest sons died during WWII. She did a good job with her children and was such a wonderful grandmother to me and my brothers and sister. I miss her terribly – Flora Pullyard Clukey died June 4, 1974.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our thoughts of our grandmothers. My condolences to The Obama/Dunham families.

Her experience is questioned because, among other things, although she may have “executive” experience… she’s just plain dumb on many issues. She can’t answer easy questions like “what is the job of the vice president”. A third grader asked the question, so maybe she was trying to dumb it down for the child…. but I doubt it. And she’s called a bitch, because she is a bitch. People throw that word around a lot for us women, but it’s rarely ever as fitting for a woman, as it is for Palin. She is a hate and fear-mongering woman…. that is a true bitch.

My Grandmother Zoe celebrated her 90th the same day as Toot’s passing. Like Barack’s Gma mine helped raise me through my preteen years due to my mother’s death when I was 18 months. She went back into the parenting biz at age 54, giving me her all, and of course my Grandpa Dale was there. When most people are starting to wind down into retirement and have delivered their own kids into adult lives, the last thing they see for themselves is raising grandchildren.
They didn’t think twice and gave me a big chunk of their life.

I agree. Alaska is a beautiful landscape with a distinct climate and wildlife, completely unique from the rest of the U.S. It should never be looked at as just a resource to strip and squander.
Debra, as far of “accusations” of “socialism” (which I don’t think is a dirty word, hence I am reluctant cal lit an accusation) – maybe you should ask yourself why you’re so afraid to give money to help poor people. (Which is really what you’re saying you’re against.)

By the way, Why do many people have to go bankrupt in Alaska and the Lower 48?
Medical Bills! People get sick, they have an operation, the insurance decides they will not pay or the person has no insurance and guess what: BANKRUPT!
There are no 800 Billion dollar bailouts for these folks though. WE HAVE MORE UNINSURED PEOPLE IN THE US NOW THAN EVER BEFORE! That is part of the Bush/ McCain legacy.
We have spent 600 Billion on the war in Iraq. BUSH LIED TO GET US INTO THAT WAR! How about stop the war and use the money for some health care for uninsured? How about NO PRE-CONDITIONS FOR INSURANCE? (In my case, there was no pre- condition but they sent 8 letters before they would pay the bill.) With McCain, we would get more insurance company exclusions.
If you cared for your patients, YOU WOULD VOTE OBAMA!

I hope you push for medical insurance paying for birth control in Alaska. Alaska insurance policies are great at playing the pre-condition game to get out of paying for operations. (Those are Bush/ McCain policies by the way.) I am not impressed with Alaska health care. I was told, if you get real sick, we will send you to Seattle.

Actually, I’d like to fancy myself a bitch also. I’m a nurse and will fight tooth and nail for my patients….a real Bitch when it’s called for. Right now I’m scared for my patients, I fear any and all health care changes Obama has for. Take a look at the health care in Canada…. Often times patients die before getting medically necessary surgery. The waiting list are just too long. Good ole socialized medical care!
Remember your words, they may ring in your ears if…GOD forbid…. Obamas changes are made. As for me I’m not ready nor do I want the kind of changes he has in store for us.

I am not an US-ian. It is possible that some could feel that I have no right having an opinion about the US elections or about the US as such. They would be right in their view.
I dont see an answer either in Mr. Obama or Mr. Mccain, what I see is a choice between two, who have no makings of a leader but that of a businessman. I could be wrong. As much as I love the concepts of Freedom, democracy etc. that US stands for, I am also aware that every system and concepts within, has its own pitfalls and limitations. It is a Human Limitation, cause not ALL can disregard their prejudices, reign in their egos and become aware of the whys and hows of their own thinking. However, I do hope that more people within the US, regardless of their religious affiliation will see that we are first Human beings and then whatever else we choose our identities to be. I hope that more will see how their seemingly insignificant everyday actions affect their future and the future of the rest of the world.
As for no one having a monopoly on God – I agree.. I also think God doesnt need a Spokesperson in any form, cause logically, it seems very silly to have this “ALMIGHTY” entity not being able to speak for itself. I dont mean offense, just using my God given Brain.

My very first reading of your blog and ladies, what a breath of fresh air! Two quick opinions from a crusty one as well…
(1)- The perspective you have vis-a-vie: “…somewhere along the way the questions stopped being questions and started being accusations.”
I absolutely love that observation; I feel it says a lot about the ‘human condition’ which is turning uglier by the day. And…
(2)- I didn’t personally hear or read that your referred to as a ‘bitch’; however, that is your take. Personally I am in awe of that person. Whereas on the other hand, “The View” reminds me of a miserable human condition.
And lastly, you can’t stop and we both know it! You’re writer’s, never met one yet that could quit.
For Aliceson (up at the top) America was founded on the very principle of what you espouse: “I also agree that freedom from religion is just as important as freedom of religion.”
It would be nice if some people would put that exact same sentiment regarding ‘speech.’ Freedom from speech (restraint, hate, ugly) is every bit as important as freedom of speech; unfortunately, not enough people understand the Framer’s original intention. Thank you ladies!!

What a thrill to read your blog!!! You have acquired wisdom with age—we so need that today.
I am so looking forward to tomorrow. When Obama wins, our nation will turn the page on the hate that has hung in the air since the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s. Racial hatred will not be completely eradicated, but we will be on the track to seeing it end. This is my hope, in my lifetime, to see us begin to achieve what began more than 40 years ago.

I don’t know where I found you but I am so glad I did. I come from a very Catholic family and most will vote only on the abortion issue. As if it’s fine to kill people once they are born. People I love and respect have such blinders on that I can’t even talk to them.
I just hope that things really will change when Obama is elected (I can’t bear even thinking about McCain winning). I can’t wait for some trickle-up economics.

Not only do I agree with what you say, You speak the truth and what you feel without fear of being ridiculed. Girls today need more than just a beauty queen to look up to they need intelligent, opinionated, but funny women. I thank you and Margret for being who you guys truly are. Even though I’m glad you two will go to back to more light hearted topics I’ll miss the topics of politics you opened my eyes a lot and got me interested in researching the issues and the candidates opinions. I need your help Helen. We’re in the fight of our life to keep our equal rights for marriage here in NC. Too many of my friends and family will be told their marriage is invalid because the Protect Marriage group here is using deceptive campaign practices. They claim there is a CA educational code that teaches marriage in the schools when in fact the code they reference is for the teaching of AIDS/HIV. This save marriage group is comprised of religious groups who are shamefully using this scare tactic to have people vote YES ON PROP (H)8. Please tell them how you feel at :

I just saw the people waiting in line for the Obama rally in NC. The hugest line I’ve ever seen.
Young people, old people, elderly, families with their babies and little kids, disabled people in their wheelchairs… All races, all walks of life… All waiting under soaking rain…
It was so uplifting to witness. No matter the outcome, I am so very proud.

I can’t believe the impact of the death of Obama’s grandmother to me. I cried remembering my own father who died on this same date in 2001. I admire Barrack Obama’s strength of character. I really hope this election don’t get rigged like the previous ones. I hope that our number will be enough to overcome the bradley effect.
I just spoke to some friends who said they don’t like McCain-Palin but wouldn’t vote for Obama either because he’s black. After failing to convince them, I simply advised them not to vote.

And I hope that your observations on the political arena don’t end when the election is over – politicians on both sides do stupid things and they need good, honest, opinionated broads with blogs to call them on it. I hope you continue to do just that.
Thank you for reminding me that there are a lot of people out there who are willing to get along with you no matter what race or religion you are… I was starting to think they were an endangered species.

Our Leaders lately have been idiots. Our Military is comprised of every economic background, philosophy, race, gender, religion and political party. And yet these people go to work everyday, in the presence of weapons, and manage not only to NOT KILL EACH OTHER, but to also accomplish very complex, long term missions and and goals.
Now we have a smattering of Extremists there too, but they are not the majority. They make trouble, but its usually short lived.
It is a powerful statement as to the ability of people of all these different backgrounds to come together and achieve the possible and sometimes the impossible.
I have always found it ironic when we would hear from high ranking politicians, who claimed to be pro-military, who seemed to have missed that incredible, living fact. That these politicians were unable to live up to that example set by our own troops–while they waved a flag and claimed to be great supporters of the military.
Which elicits the response:
Yea whatever.
Get back to me when you really understand what the military accomplishes daily, inspite of the efforts of bigots all over the Nation.
I hope you ladies keep blogging like crazy. I want to hear what you have to say.
Everyday you remind me that the entire country is not crazy, dumb or doomed to be crazy or dumb. You let me know that intelligence is found in every generation, that the 2-dimensional treatment of those over 50, by the press–the media in general is inaccurate and misleading and is often used as an excuse by younger folks to be jerkoff bigots.
Everyday I come here, you ladies give me hope and I cannot even begin to describe to you how long its been that I have gotten that particular savory drink on someone else’s electronic Stoop.
So for Keee-Rist’s sake, don’t stop now.

I hope this will be of interest to you. Very moving to me and I share it with a loving heart. Senator Obama visited the Crow Nation during his campaign. The opening prayer before his speech was spoken in the Crow language by an Elder. Though it is the introduction for Mr. Obama who apprears briefly at the end, the sentiment of the prayer is one Nation (the Crow) praying for the welfare of another Nation and the World.
The Elder opens with an invitation that I have heard many times in American Indian Communities: “Pray in your own way”.

Helen, I too revere you and am so grateful that you have taken the time to blog. I understand the ‘Thank God’ part of seven blogs in seven days, and I too, hunger for more from you. Perhaps you would like to blog less frequently, when an issue strikes, and can have Matthew set up an email notification to those of us who would like to read your new blogs. These kids can do anything, you know, and if other blogs can do it, I know Matthew can for you and Margaret.
I’m feeling so anxious today. I’m only 68, but I remember ‘Dewey Defeats Truman’, the thrill of the Kennedy election, then, oh then – the election of Nixon, his re-election (!), a brief respite with Carter and the absolute drubbing he took (almost on a par with Clinton), and then the election of Reagan who I had experienced as a horrible, mean spirited, stingy awful Governor and his trickle down ‘economics’. Bill Clinton was a wonderful change but he was so savaged – then these past eight years. Did I mention that my son joined the Air Force in 1984? He’s been in every war since then, and I learned the real meaning of ‘no news is good news.’ He is retired now (and now I know the real meaning of ‘Thenk God’), but my anger runs deep when I remember ‘Bring it on!’ and think of this wonderful country, full of hope for people all over the world, engaging in a war of aggression. Oh, dear – I’ve gone on way too long, but the reason my heart is in my throat is that I’m so afraid that ‘folks’ will fool us again, and we will have McPalin declared the victors. Your posts have given me lots of heart and hope. So thank you, and see if Matthew can get that email thingy I talked about when I first started this (unedited) comment. Over here in London and Hertfordshire (all the UK actually), we’re all celebrating the victory of a young man of mixed race who, despite little experience and villifcation by his rivals’ supporters for being black (and hints from within the establishment that he was “the wrong sort of person”), managed to reach the pinnacle he had dreamed of since childhood.
Take Lewis Hamilton’s sporting victory as a sign if you want to, but I can assure you that we’re also hoping that the papers we pick up on Wednesday for our journeys home will have good news for the whole world. But one worry – will there be two months of petulant irreparable damage before the inauguration?

All the talk of Kennedy and his election for some reason reminded me of how upset the Republicans were when Bill Clinton won. The country had to go through 8 years of them trying desparately to find some dirt to smear the Clintons with. Made it pretty tough for Clinton to be ‘president’ of the country – since a lot of his time and energy went into defending himself and Hilary. I can image them doing the same when Obama wins. See there will still be many topics for you two to share your opinions on.

Anger is OK, if self-harnessed to motivate, but fear, despair and hate weaken our human potential. Always have – always will.

Well you made it and I know I’m not alone in my eagerness to check the blog each day for “day *whichever* of 7 blogs in 7 days!” I add my voice to the chorus calling for you to keep writing. The election ending is only the beginning, really.
Tomorrow I will be working the polls and will be living in a bubble of sorts until they close and I go home. Being in AZ I hope the east coast results will be telling the story by then.

I had a wonderful day yesterday reading through all of your posts and homepage. Now I find myself worried that you will fade from the blog scene when tomorrow comes. Please, please keep writing and sharing with us your wisdom and oh, so funny take on the world at large.
I want to hear what you have to say about whatever comes up…whatever is on your mind. You and I agree politically so that makes my reading of your writing even more enjoyable. However, something tells me that even if we don’t agree on the next topic, the way you say it will make me want to hear what you have to say. Isn’t that as good as it gets?
I, too, am so full of hope about this election.
One of my favorite bloggers, Danny Miller at “Jew Eat Yet?” wrote a brilliant post about the 1908 election. The Republican party at that time was about peace and communication. The Democratic party was about Religious intolerance. How did that happen? Here’s hoping we can make the flip again and come closer to being Demopublicans or Republicrats.

I also agree that freedom from religion is just as important as freedom of religion. This election has become a contest to see who can be more Christian than the next guy, when many Americans aren’t Christian at all. Wake up people, we need healthcare and jobs not religous BS.

I agree with you about religious tolerance and assumption, too. My husband said he had to take part in group Christian prayer in the federal building for some occasions and it made him a little uncomfortable. The assumption was that EVERYBODY was Christian. I had that happen at my school, too, but eventually the time came when teachers became aware that not everyone went to the same church so they called it more a moment of silence which was fine with me.
My husband is an angel. He’ll stop whatever he’s doing to help anyone who needs it. I won’t go into all he’s done before to help others aside from volunteering in my classroom to help kids after he retired. However, he has a friend who told me that he was worried about him because he feared my husband would be going to Hell because he wasn’t Christian. This friend is one who has been “troubled” as long as I’ve known him. And he’s worried my husband would go to Hell. What kind of God does he have anyway. Oh dear…. I’m getting carried away aren’t I? Sheesh! It’s only Monday for goodness sake.
I just want you to know I LOVE your blog and will continue to read it even when the elections are over.

Thanks for the daily posting this past week. I’ve sent the link to your blog to many friends and we all wistfully wish we could be adopted by you. My elders are neo-cons. Sigh. Yes… tomorrow decides it all. And no matter what happens, we can all be sure that we met some great people here at this blog, and to think, the way it started, who would have guessed it woud have turned viral?
Helen, I’ll check in on you every so often, to see what’s going on in Texas and Maine, and I do hope after this election you can go back to enjoying Margaret’s company without worry of appeasing your political audience, hehe.

I only discovered your blog recently, thanks to a comment by another reader on The Huffington Post. Kudos and much appreciation to both of you ladies. You’ve helped to keep me sane in the face of all this nuttiness from the McCain campaign, and I thank you for that.
I wish my grandmother had been more like the two of you. Unfortunately, she held tight to her prejudices to the very end, and we had many heated exchanges over the years. She sure was feisty (like both of you), but her views remained firmly entrenched in the past. I’d like to think that, if she was alive today, she wouldn’t be voting for McCain/Palin; she was too smart for that. But I know she wouldn’t vote for Obama, either. *sigh*
I wish you and your families good health and good cheer, and I will check in after tomorrow to see what you’re both up to. I hope we all have reason to celebrate the future!

I was 12 when Kennedy ran, and Catholic. (I’ve been in recuperation ever since…) My mother’s side of the family wasn’t Catholic, and voted Publican for the first time in their lives. Now they are the ones who think they have a right to force their religious practices on everyone else.
Like you and your readers, I can’t wait for tomorrow to be over and a new chapter of life to begin. I am so pleased to have become acquainted with you and your blog, and look forward to frequent visits over the coming months.

Just love your site. Thankfully, this will all be over tomorrow & if things look like they do now we will have a president we can be proud of. One who thinks ALL people in America are American. I was at the Cleveland, OH rally yesterday (over 80,000 people!). It was just awsome to see all ethnicities, all religions, etc. coming together. We went by the Cleveland early voting location & there were so many people you couldn’t believe. It was just amazing!!!! You go girls:)

Well said! In fact our founding fathers alone had beliefs as varied as the panel from the View and they actually accomplished something.
I’m hoping the lipsticked pitbull is taken to the pound, but there are several million who’ll disagree – and as cliche as it sounds, Isn’t it still a gift that we have the freedom disagree?

I am sooooo excited about tomorrow!!! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, with so much anticipation and hope.
I will be up before dawn to get to the polls before they open. I will vote, go to work and periodically check the internet to see what is happening.
I feel optimistic. A new hope is on the horizon.
May Obama bring the changes we need. May our talk be about hope, future, peace, prosperity, tolerance, embracing the differences in one another.
No more talk about fear. No more talk about divisions. No more talk about us and them. Just us. Just us. Just us. ALL of us!!

I was 10 when Kennedy was running for President. I vividly remember the threatening ads that if we voted for him, the Pope would run our country. That Kennedy would take orders from the Vatican.
Hogwash, you might say! And there’s still a LOT of hogwash out there, isn’t there?

I have only recently began to read your blog. Friends of mine on the http://politicalcartel.com/ posted about your site. Ladies, you are amazing. You are a mix of my history teacher/ political science teacher and my grandparents/ greatgrandparents wisdom. Although, i would not go so far to call Palin a “female dog”, she scares the poop out of me. mccain is old, capable, but old. His age doesnt bother me, really, it is his ideological stance that emulates a mutated form of reganism (that i think was excellent, but not the mutated stuff) of the 20th century. It is time for us to make a major shift in the way things are done around here. I have future children and grand children to think about, not just maintianing the status quo. Thanks again Mrs.Margaret and Mrs. Helen and Happy voting!
