That Other One Has To Go

(Seven Posts in Seven Days – Day 4)

Cecilia, the fact that you have two small children means that you of all people should be paying attention everyday.  It’s their future, not yours that will be most impacted.  I wish you the best of luck making your decision.

But onto another undecided out there.   So I love my Whoopi Goldberg.   And that Joy Behar makes me laugh.  Barbara Walters has lost some of her edge, but she will always have my respect for her accomplishments.  And then there is Moron Hasselbeck.  Enough said.  But, now there is that other one. Cherry?  Cheryl?  Philmore?  I don’t remember her name.  She’s pretty forgettable.  Yesterday she announced that she was still undecided.  OK. That’s it.  She’s a jackass.   I mean this woman is on a show called The View.  What exactly is it that she can’t see? She has met, in person, all the big players in this little card game.  Talk about being spoon fed.  And as a fellow plus-size gal I know that she has had more than her share from that spoon.  I am sure qood people like Cecilia wouldn’t squander such an opportunity.  It’s five days away.  I’ve got no more patience.  What’s her name has to go.

So several of you have emailed me about something happening in California.  Now, a lot of crazy stuff goes on in that state and so I may be getting this a little mixed up.  Evidently they are wanting to pass a constitutional amendment to make only marriages between a man and a woman valid in California.  Talk about an ignorant pot calling a gay kettle black.  Somebody really should check the latest divorce rates because clearly many marriages everywhere are not valid.

Now I am an old broad.  We didn’t talk about this stuff.  I really don’t know why gay people want to get married.  It’s not all it’s cracked up to be.  Just ask Harold.  But I guess if one consenting adult wants to declare their love for another, why would anyone have an issue? I do know one gay couple.  Margaret’s nephew and his friend have been together for several years.  They are a lovely couple and make me laugh and feel special every time I see them.  A couple of years ago Texas passed one of these constitutional amendments.   The place where Harold and I go to vote is actually an elementary school in the neighborhood.  On that particular election day I was appalled to see all the signs that said “Marriage Should Be Between a Man and Woman Only”.   As Harold drove us into the parking lot to vote, I looked out the window at those signs and realized that many parents had driven their kids to school that morning driving past those very signs.  I wonder if any of them had the same reaction I did – those signs reminded me of the little signs we used to have back in the day that said “Whites Only”.  Think about it.

And now I must go.  This seven posts in seven days thing isn’t easy.  Happy Halloween everyone.

For those of you that keep emailing me about the t-shirts… Margaret’s nephew is an artist and he created some cartoons.  My grandson Matthew put them on something called Cafe Press.  We told the boys they could keep whatever money they made.  A little fun money at their age will be much better used than what Margaret and I would do with it.  It think they’ve made about $100 so good for them.

Thanks for stopping by everyone.  I mean it.  Really.

  2. 1 Timothy 2:9: “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

Gee, someone should inform Sarah Palin that spending $150,000 dollars on clothes and adornment might not be Biblical.

Ephesians 6:5-9: “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…”

I guess Abraham Lincoln should have read his Bible before starting all that ruckus!

Timothy 2:11-14: “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with propriety.”

Sorry gals, I guess that leaves Margaret and Helen out of the holy loop! (You certainly aren’t silent. I guess I don’t know about the rest.)

My POINT is that the Bible has ALWAYS been used by extremist and fundamentalists to justify discrimination and hate. Religion, like language, is a living thing and is changed by millions of people and ideas and by the times and cultures in which they have lived and are living. Once a language stops evolving with the culture it becomes extinct. Who speaks Sanskrit anymore? The same can be said for religion. Are there any modern-day Puritans?
The message of Christianity is not dead, however. Consider “What Would Jesus Do in 2008?”

    Love your blog girls.

  3. Helen, You are my new hero. Forget the out of context scripture quoting from David – you have hit the nail square on the head.

As a people we always seem to have to make some group, some subset of people suffer to make ourselves feel better and right, starting in this country with the Irish, the Chinese laborers, the Native Americans, African Americans, people in interracial marriages, immigrants (legal and not) and of course, the gays and anyone who thinks and lives their life outside of the mainstream, whatever that is.

I applaud people like yourself, especially of your generation who can look beyond what they have always been “carefully taught” to see what is right in treating people with dignity and like fellow human beings.

    Thank you –

Oh – and I agree – she is a bitch!!

  4. To A girl: Who said we were talking about sex? Who are you to limit the dependents of a family? You give excuses for making the other scenerios illegal, but you miss the glaring fact that homosexuals can not have children. If all Americans were homosexual, then Americans would eventually become extinct unless they adopted children from other countries. That is one logical or moral reason…survival of the country.

To smteaches: Learn the Bible. How is that people who criticize Christianity do not know their beliefs? Everything you quoted is Orthodox Judiasm, not Christianity. And no, Jesus was not crucified because he “hung out” with sinners. The Jewish leadership, Pharisees and Sadducees, got Jesus crucified because he declared himself the Messiah and was a threat to their authority. If you can see past the priestly connotations, the irony here is that the democrats and republicans are much like the pharisees and sadducees. And find me one verse where Jesus said, “I love you just as you are.” I guess the call to repentance of the whole New Testament passed you by.

To Alaska Pi: We are on a slippery slope. The call of the day is if the constitution doesn’t specifically state it, then it’s lawful. Without the Bill of Rights and other amendments, we would have lost basic human rights, such as freedom of speech. Under Bush, we would have been in a military state if it wasn’t for the Bill of Rights preventing them. But even still, these rights are infringed or stretched until the courts condemn them again and again. The problem is the “Founding Fathers” had limited foresight. If they knew that their vagueness would have lead to a slippery slope, then they would have been more specific. Without a national crisis, it’s very unlikely we will ever see a new amendment to the Constitution because of the divisiveness of the 2 monopolistic political parties. Supreme Court decisions can be changed.

All it would take is enough of a group to advocate a certain issue for a slippery slope to happen, say…illegal immigration. Neither party wants to deal with it fearing that it will cost them a lot of votes in Florida and the Mexican border states. Same-sex marriage is only an issue because their are enough homosexuals and enough “who cares” heterosexuals in the country, but yet not enough for the 2 main presidential candidates to endorse it. Freedom does have it’s limits and it should. Changing marriage laws from a man and a woman to a man or a woman to whomever or whatever is such a limit that needs protecting, just like other limits of freedom such as murder, rape, robbery, incest, etc.. needs protecting.

You may not envision a slippery slope now, but neither did the “Founding Fathers” back in 1787.

To Gregg and James: Where in the Bible does God or Jesus talk about gays through man? No twisting the meaning and not my words here.

“You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22)

“If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (Leviticus 20:13)

“Some Pharisees came to Jesus to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:3-9)

“Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor boy prostitutes, nor practicing homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor robbers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

“realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” (1 Timothy 1:9-11)

“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” (Romans 1:26-27)

  5. Dear Helen

I’m a South African (of colour) who grew up during Apartheid so I saw those “Whites Only” signs first-hand. I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of that kind of institutionalised prejudice and I think your comparison is spot on.

I don’t see any reason why gays cannot be afforded exactly the same legal rights as non-gays. How on earth gay marriage threatens the institution of marriage is beyond me.

We are all human beings, infinite in our variety, but all still human. I feel so downhearted when I see so much effort being put into discriminating against gays.

  10. Wow, the guy showed up who compares homosexual marriage to people marrying dogs. Took you awhile.

Yes, because intelligent, consenting adults of the same sex marrying each other is exactly like marrying a canine, or any other animal. Oh, and yeah, while we’re legalizing gay marriage we should go ahead and allow incest and change laws about rape. Oh, and murder…certainly two consenting adults being allowed to enter into a loving marriage is exactly like murder, so let’s start allowing that too.

If that’s all you have to throw out there, it’s better left unsaid because you just showed yourself to be an ASS of the highest order, and it shouldn’t be legal to marry you. These ridiculous reasons that come out of the Christian right for why gay marriage should be illegal are insulting to the intelligence of the human race.

You say this absolute BS to stir people up, and it does work, because you may or may not be joking, but a lot of people truly think the things you said. And they are scary, backwards, closeminded people.

People like you, David, and those that think like you, are the exact reason this country needs to move away from the Christian right ideals-and certainly why we can’t afford to move closer to them.

As others have said, calling them Christian seems to go against that word. Religious zealots-though what religion they follow I do not know.

  11. Hi Helen and Margaret,

It’s James and Gregg and yes we are a gay couple if you have been reading your posts then you know that we have been following your essays for quite some time and love them. We live in the state in question “CALIFORNIA” and just got married earlier this month (I hope it lasts) VOTE NO ON 8.

Anyway thought i is ironic that both the Mormon and Catholic religions are the biggest pushers for the proposition 8, and being that they want to protect marriage…okay the mormons that is the pot calling the kettle black, hipocrits they want to protect marriage so they say, well so which wife are they talking about the first one or number 12? Polygamy isn’t legal but that doesn’t stop them and we in california aren’t running to Utah saying anything about it (Mormons mind your own state). As for the Catholics well being that i was raised one and went through 7 years of the school I feel fairly knowledgeable about them… was even a Eucharistic Minister. But its funny how they are opposed to GAY marriage when 1. they won’t even let their own priests marry (hmmm) then 2. that those same priests who are preaching this B.S. are out there molesting your kids. So what’s wrong with this picture.

And by the way all you religious fanatics opposed to gay marriage. I pose this question to you. If the bible is written by men learning through the eyes of God, tell me where in God’s writing in the 10 Commandments does it say anything about Gays? I don’t recall seeing much in there about Gays. Then also in the New Testament as far as I know our Loving Lord Jesus has always taught Love, not hate, and even the prostitutes were accepted for whom they were, so how come you don’t come off your high and mighty and follow what GOD and JESUS teaches instead of what you twist it to mean.

Okay i am stepping off of my soap box, back to you Helen and Margaret.

  12. Tens of thousands of committed, same-sex couples are already legally married in Canada, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, and South Africa…..yet they do NOT have people marrying blood relatives, animals, or children.

David, your arguments are the same arguments used in this country just fifty years ago when it was illegal for white persons to marry black persons. Same old arguments, same old prejudices, same old fear-mongering, same old ignorance.

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that the only people who are ever against extending equality and civil rights to others are the people who already have them?

WWJD? Actually, Jesus was crucified by the religious and political right, who hated Him because He hung out with the “sinners” — the prostitutes, the tax collectors, the lepers, the unclean, the “others”. JWD what He always did: He would say to EVERYONE “I love you just as you are. Nothing you can say or do can make me like you or love you any less. You may not be good enough for the religious, but you are good enough for me. I’m sorry they condemn you. Please know that I still love you and value you and want you to spend an eternity with me. You may come to my table JUST AS YOU ARE.” THAT’S what JWD.

  14. David-
You are worried about the old slippery slope thing…
We don’t HAVE to fall down the hill to enfranchise a group of Americans we have ignored.
We are capable, with eyes wide open, of crafting legislation which plants our feet right where we want them. ( Hard to believe with all the laws that get cobbled together like alphabet soup, but quite possible. ) We can and should expand civil rights to include marraige equality .
Marraige equality for gay couples , in and of itself, does not lead to the increasingly wild scenarios you propose…for cryin out loud.
Nor is out of the norm in the manner you suggest… we ladies would still be out here waiting to vote if civil rights was based on the norm you suggest…
Civil rights are based on the rights and responsibilities of citizens to fully partake of the work and benefits of their community. There is no community or court, in this country, which would view counterfitting as a possible civil right…

  15. Thank you to many of you who made such kind and supportive comments! You are inspiring and encouraging and – like Obama – make me believe in HOPE!

And thank you to the many CA bloggers who are voting NO on Prop 8!

Reder: you missed my point entirely. I am not asking for any “special term”…I’m asking for marriage, period. You asked why I call it equality: because I do not have the same civil rights that heterosexuals have. Marriage equality is THE civil rights issue of the 21st century.

David: you say marriage has always been a religious institution. That’s not entirely correct, but let’s imagine it IS correct. Religious tenets change ALL the time. Even the most far-right-wing-conservative-evangelical-Christians-who-believe-every-word-of-the-Bible-literally have changed their religious beliefs due to changes (for the better) in cultural and societal beliefs. Afterall, the scriptures endorse polygamy and slavery and they condemn to death anyone who eats shellfish (sorry Red Lobster fans), anyone who touches the skin of a dead pig (NFL players beware), and anyone who wears clothes made with two or more different materials (sorry to the rest of the world – even if you don’t eat shellfish or play football, you’re still going to hell unless every piece of clothing you own is 100% wool, linen, or silk.)

Oh, and if your brother ever dies, the scriptures say you are obligated to buy his wife for the price of one shoe and impregnate her. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself in hell with the rest of us.

  16. David: You can’t compare marriage between same-sex couples to those other marriages that you offered up. Sex between family members can cause serious inbreeding issues with their potential children… the main reason that incest is illegal… because it is actually detrimental to someone’s health. The same can be said of beastiality, which certainly can’t be healthy… and the fact that an animal with no verbal skills can confirm its willingness to participate in such an act. Between adults and children is also illegal, again, as this would be taking advantage of a child’s rights. And there are some young teenagers that DO in fact get married with their parent’s consent. As far as polygamy goes, that is illegal from a economic standpoint. Polygamy would take advantage of the government’s tax system, allowing them to claim additional exemptions. It would only further allow people to purposely abuse the system. There are polygamist colonies here and there, of course… but most of their marriages only have a single legalized marriage, whereas the other marriages are only in church without a valid license.
As you can see, none of these are for religious reason.. they are simply moral or logical ideals. With religion aside (or what some would try to find as interpreted from their religion), what is logical or moral about restricting a legal marriage between two people of the same sex?
And Barb, I would totally believe that Palin does not have the capacity for feeling that loss of spending time with her children. She seems cold and heartless at times. Statements such as that one convince me of it.

Kindly then explain why the Puritan colonists insisted that marriages not be conducted by any but civil authorities:

  21. I got to ask the question…Where do you draw the line? Marriage has always been a religious union that eventually was backed-up by governments. Which throws a needle in the eye of the “separation of church and state” crowd. Isn’t it the right of the government to decide what it will validate and to protect morality? If you allow same-sex marriage because it discriminates, then where do you draw the line? Do you legalize marriages between a father and a daughter? Do you legalize marriages between people and dogs? Do you legalize polygamy for those bisexuals? Do you legalize marriages between children and adults? It is the right of the government to say “this is unacceptable”, such as rape, murder, incest, fraud, robbery, etc. You still may think it is discrimination, but it is not. If someone wants to live their life, let’s say out of the norm, it’s not the government’s duty to give fair access to an establishment. For instance, if a group of Americans decides to print their own currency and they try to pay the government with that currency, then the government has the right to reject that currency as legal tender. That is what this whole same-sex marriage sounds like… let me print my own money and you must accept it because it would be discrimination not to accept it. BTW, those gay couples can get power of attorney for medical and estate issues.

WWJD? Love the sinner, hate the sin.

  22. re: Gay Marriage
In the LA Times today (11/1) I there’s an op ed piece pointing out that the Mormon church of ALL groups should be “sensitive to those seeking non-traditional marriages.” The writer of the piece is a member of the Mormon History Assn. and for the record, I’m not declaring support of polygamy, but think about what she’s saying: here’s a group that has had to fight hatred and prejudice for over a century and now they’re not only perpetuating it, they’re funding it. This just drives home what a whacky, xenophobic, and CONFUSED country we live in! sigh.

The supporters of prop 8 are scaring voters by flooding the airwaves with garbage like: gay marriage will be taught in schools. As if. I’ve been a teacher for 24 years and we don’t teach marriage, hetero or otherwise, in schools . And, hell, if we did, it would be taught as a math lesson (fractions, percentages, statistics) as we calculate how many ‘traditional’ marriages fail. Talk about your reality based word-problems. bahaha!
Seriously, though, it is just heartbreaking to see how much support (and funding) hate and fear will drum up.

I am so sorry your family has not only turned their backs on you but have also actively sought to sabotage your livelihood.
Your argument for marraige equality as a recognion of kinship is the finest I have ever read or heard.
In the abstract, it has never made sense to me to deny some folks who are ready and willing to take on the responsibilities of a commitment the rights generally conferred to others who make that commitment.
I come from a mixed race marriage ( and a mixed religion marraige for that matter ) . My folks’ marraige raised some eyebrows, especially on my dad’s (white ) side, but apparently , over the years, Alaska Native heritage ended up being considered more exotic than unacceptable by most of the family.
No one ever denied them the kinship they formed…though there were plenty of questions about their judgement in picking a partner.

If you look at the last four Presidents, they only one who managed to balance the budget and create a surplus was Bill Clinton, and all this while having to work with a Republican controlled congress.

I also enjoy reading your readers’ comments. So often on blogs the comments from readers are blathering foamies that make no sense or at the least aren’t worth the electrons to make them visible to the rest of the world. Your readers seem to actually have a brain and can put out a cogent thought. I guess that’s why they’re reading you!

  42. This isn’t a response to what has been said on the marriage topic, but a comment on what I heard Sarah Palin say on 2020 tonight. Elizabeth Vargas asked SP if she didn’t miss her children, with having to be on the campaign trail, and not being with them in their daily routines like bedtime. Sarah said, (and I quote as accurately as I remember..) “I don’t miss anything a male candidate wouldn’t miss.” I think that is what she really said. Anybody else hear that?

As a mother of 4, grandmother of 4, I have to say that statement of hers ranks right up there with all the other unbelievable things she has said over the last 8 weeks! Like “No, I didn’t hesitate for a second to accept the VP nomination!” Really? No hesitation at all? Sorry, not believable.

Any mother who gives birth to her children, nurses them, feeds them, tends them, plays with them, helps them, raises them, etc. has GOT to miss being involved in those aspects of their daily lives when other obligations prevent it! And they are only little for such a short time, and time flies! And of course, there are fathers who also do those things, and probably wish they had more time to spend with their little ones, but I just don’t buy that she doesn’t miss them any more than any “male” candidate would. Uh…do you think John McCain ever missed bathing a child and reading bedtime stories while he was campaigning? Maybe it is just me, but I have a hard time envisioning him even having such a thought. So, what was she trying to say??? That it was a sexist question? Give me a break!!!

Here’s my issue. Tonight I had my Obama sign stolen off my lawn, and replaced with, of all things, a Bush/Cheney sign, because some Republican thought it would be funny. Funny to violate my rights by coming onto my property to steal, violating my right to free speech, violating my right by taking away my voice.

So, is it bitter if I ask that all the Republicans who voted for Bush and are going to vote for McCain encourage their children to join the Army and serve in Iraq or Afghanistan. I don’t say this lightly, I served 12 years in the Navy and 3 years in the Air Force Reserve and I’m a Gulf War Vet, so I love my country, just like they all claim to. Of course, the difference is, I would NEVER tresspass, steal, or violate to forward my opinion.

As a retired U.S. History teacher, I believe that religion and government should never mix. There are so many different religions in our country and our elected officials represent ALL of us! No one religious group should be allowed to have that much power in government affairs or elections.

    Like

  51. smteach – I think most people (myself included) who have commented on this marriage of gay/same-sex marriage are in agreement. I see the difference between civil union and marriage. We have used the term ‘gay marriage’ to clarify that we are saying that you should have the same rights as a marriage between a man and women (which I think is what you are asking for). I also think it is up to any particular religion to decide if they want to or will marry a gay couple but not the government. However even if you are ‘married’ by a justice of the peace you are still married and are entitled to the same rights just like all the men and women who have been or will be married by a justice of the peace or any one authorized to marry some one. As soon as you start splitting hairs and coming up with special term for it you make it harder for those who disagree with the concept to accept the idea. Isn’t marriage marriage. Maybe I’m missing something in what you wrote. If that be the case I am sorry. Maybe you can be a little clear as to why you want it to be call marriage equality.

  54. Dear Helen,

My partner and I have been together for nearly fourteen years. When I came out to my family, my mom said, “You’re going straight to hell & the sooner you get there, the better.” My mom & sister pray that my partner and I will be killed – and they ask others to do the same – because “it would be better for us to be dead than to be gay.” When my grandpa passed away two summers ago, my mom asked me not to come to the funeral because “the family is so grief-stricken, they just cannot deal with the gay
thing on top of everything else.” My mom & sister both called the principal of the middle school I taught at & asked him to fire me because “gay people should not be allowed to interact with children.” I haven’t been invited to a family event in over a decade.

My parents live in CA & are avid supporters of
Prop 8/McCain/Palin….who both fuel thier fires of bigotted, religious-based beliefs.

I teach middle school in small-town America. Many male teachers in my school still call the boys queer/fag/faggot when they’re frustrated w/ them for one reason or another. As a country, we are not any less racist/bigotted/prejudice than ever…we have just become quiet about it. Neverthless, racism, bigotry, and prejudiced beliefs are alive & thriving in our country. They are perpetuated in homes & passed on to children. This election has revealed these sad facts more than any other event since the Civil Rights Movement.

As you can imagine, Helen, your most recent post brought tears to my eyes & joy to my heart. Thank you for being so good-hearted, compassionate, & accepting. Thank you for taking a stand for equality & justice for ALL. And thank you for thaking the time to read my story. I mean it. Really.

  57. I’d like to ask fans of this site not to use the terms “gay marriage/same-sex marriage”
and instead use the terms “marriage equality for gay couples/same-sex couples.”

“Gay marriage” implies we are asking for special rights when, in fact, we are asking for equal rights.

There are hundreds of thousand of same-sex couples living in the US who share the same
responsibilities as their heterosexual counterparts, but do not receive the same
recognition or protections for their families. For example, same-sex couples cannot obtain family health coverage, bereavement leave after the death of a partner, inheritance rights, immunity from having to testify against a spouse in court, burial rights, the ability to file joint tax returns, or legal protection in case theirrelationship ends.

Civil marriage is important to same-sex couples because it is the legal pathway to protections and benefits that civil unions and domestic artnerships do not provide. Civil marriage establishes KINSHIP, and kinship includes access to healthcare, medicaldecision-making, parenting and immigration rights, access to inheritance and Social Security benefits, transfer of property, and other rights and protections. In fact, there are 1,138 federal legal rights and protections that are established with civil marriage in the United States, which is why same-sex couples advocate for marriage equality….and why we are not willing to settle for civil unions. Civil unions do not give us kinship and do not give us equality.

If you ask people who oppose marriage equality why they are against it, they can only give one answer: religion. How many hateful/hurtful things are going to be done in the name of religion before we “learn better” and “do things better?”

We are asking for marriage equality so that we can express our love and commitment in a way that is understood by the world, in a way that allows us to legally protect our relationships, and in a way that celebrates the strength and value of all loving and committed couples!

The sanctity of marriage has already gone down the tubes. Between the high divorce rate, the abuse, the infidelity and sometimes even murder (remember the Petersons in Cali?), from where I sit, it looks as if the sanctity of marriage has already been destroyed….by straight people.

Right now, with no civil rights or marriage, gay’s are screwed. Figuratively. They buy a house in one’s name, the other loses it if that half of the couple passes away. Even if they’ve made all the payments. If one is injured and in ICU, the other can’t visit because they aren’t family. Families of the deceased can come in and take everything this couple worked hard for. I’m sorry…it’s just not right.

She started laughing and told me she knew I would be OK with it but knowing what some of her friends had been through, it was still hard for her to do. For the life of me I can’t understand why people are so scared of those who are different from themselves, why parents would abandon their children upon finding out they are gay. What the hell is up with that? I could care less what people do in the bedroom. Isn’t two people loving each other enough? I have found that difference in the people I meet has been what has enriched my life the most. I wanted Hillary but Obama proved himself to me and I’ve already cast my vote for him.   79. Helen;

My mother came from rural Arkansas. We lived in a small town there when I was 10. I never saw a black person in downtown, or in any of the ‘white’ areas. I remember being startled whenever I saw a black person. Kids in our school said you could pick up the color if they were allowed in the swimming pool.

It was crazy stuff but there was no one to say these were not true.

The same is true with gay people, Muslims, Arabs, and any number of people who are in the minority – and especially when they live in fear of the majority.

And, as long as each of these minorities can be kept in fear of, or competition with, other minorities….. well, you know: Divide and conquer. There will be ruthless people who will prey on our fears.

It took lots of effort but my parents made it a point to know lots of different people. It’s like having the best meal – lots of different flavors, discoveries, and loving connection.

Obama knows what that’s like. His story is like a beacon cutting through the fog of fear. Many undecideds have not lived in a world where people know each other across the invisible divides. It will take them time to overcome their fears.

After all, we’re just a family, the human family, and like all families we have our good times and our tough times.

  84. Prop 8: why is it that a group of people who profess to abide by the Christian concept of love for your fellow man are so easily threatened by that very concept? I guess what they really mean to say is, “love your fellow man, but only if you are a woman!” I am disgusted and sickened by those who seek to use religious beliefs as the basis for legalized discrimination in civil matters. The Golden Rule is often offered as a foundational Christian concept – that we are to treat others as we would like to be treated. SO WHAT HAPPENED?? A vocal group of people have decided that the Golden Rule only applies to “others” who are exactly like them. Ridiculous.

So to those who are advocating for the passage of Prop 8 – which tosses a foundational christian concept out on its ass – keep your religion in your church and your civil rights in your government! Many of us have marriages which are not recognized by our church (yes, I am talking about a marriage between a man and a woman that is not recognized by a church). Happens all the time! I was married in the backyard by a former catholic priest who left the priesthood 42 years ago to marry a woman with whom he fell in love. I have a legal marriage which confers civil rights upon both me and my husband, but guess what! The catholic church does not recognize our marriage because we were not married in accordance with the church etc. I am fine with that, and it doesn’t make me any less legally married than our neighbors who had a full mass at their wedding in the church.

My point is this: A marriage is a legal committment between two consenting adults. You get the license and comply with the legal requirements. Done. Now, if those two people wish to hold some sort of particular ceremony in order to have their marriage recognized in accordance with their beliefs, then that is between them, their clergy, and their church. It has nothing to do with the government, nor should it.

I agree with Helen that this is a divisive, nasty effort to legalize discrimination – why do we want to go backwards in our history of social development by passing something so blatently wrong???

Being a big Obama supporter, I can see her eventually voting for Obama. She’s a bit smarter in her statements on the show than when she first started, but she’s young, and she’s still learning. I think this election has been a huge learning process for everyone in the US. Especially for those Arab-hating grandma’s that attend the Straight Talk Express rallies, but we know who they’re voting for don’t we? Sherri will probably vote for Obama. There’s no way she’d put Governor Moose Munch anywhere near the White House. So give it a LITTLE slack, she’s learning. We all are; even this 40 year old white boy in NY, but from Oklahoma. Love you girls!

  96. I hear ya Helen. I live in Virginia. Now like most states many of us vote at a school. In 2006, Virginia had a ballot to outlaw gay marriage here. Oddly enough we already had not 1, but 2 laws doing that already. I was a little confused by it, but whatever. I took my daughter to school the next day and there were signs all over the place! Unfortunately I have a pretty bright child and at 6 she could read them. I was a single mom at the time and she wanted to know if they meant I was bad because I wasn’t married. So I had to explain they were trying to convince people that gays shouldn’t be able to marry.

So I got out of my car and started ripping signs out of the ground and throwing them in my trunk!

I’m sure you can guess her next question. What is gay? UGH. So I explained. Some women like other women. Some men like other men. They kiss and do things like gram and gramp. Whew. She looked over at me and said, “What’s the big deal? Why can’t people just get along.”

I have to say I’ve rarely been prouder! Perhaps I should ask Zo to give Sarah a call and explain it to her!

Later that week my mom and I were shopping and she put bags in the trunk of my car. Apparently Zo had aready told her what I’d done, because she just laughed and asked how long it took me to pull all those signs out of the ground! There must have been 20 of them in my trunk.

She is apparently going through the pregnancy without the companionship of the father, and his mother says that maybe next summer they will get married.
I don’t care who marries whom, or if people choose not to get married, even if they have children.
But for the life of me, I can’t figure out what is going on with this family and their supporters. If the Palin family is supposed to be some sort of role-model for American families, why aren’t they living what they preach?

Actually, you CANNOT be turned away by ANYTHING you wear at the polling booths. It is your right to wear anything and if there is law in your state that prevents anything “political” from being in the polling arena, they are by law supposed to provide you with tape (for example) to cover what is illegal to have in the polling area. You cannot be arrested OR prevented from voting due to inappropriate attire.

    Thought I would clarify that.

When Obama went on the show Sherry said that she wasn’t sure before, but meeting him convinced her to the point she was now willing to campaign for him, so somebody has gotten in her ear and has her mixed up again.

I’ve cried, yelled, walked, donated, and posted always asking the same question…what in God’s (whomever you believe her/him/it to be) name has happened to us as human beings that we have become so vile (evil) to one another? How can one person watch another suffer without reaching out a hand in comfort? How can we call each other these horrible epithets and still call ourselves human? How?

My governor, Sarah Palin, will try to do that here, I am sure. Now that we have seen her true colors, I do believe she will no longer hide behind the “I can get along with Democrats” facade she’s utilized in the past. We Alaskans will no longer trust her. Your mention of the T-shirts prompts me to pass along a cautionary e-mail I just received from CafePress.com (where I have Klip’s Image Shop):

“Quick “public service” note from CafePress letting you know that come Election Day, in some states, it’s prohibited to wear political gear at the voting booth (seriously). In fact, donning political attire may result in your being turned away — and in some cases, your arrest.

By definition, displaying political messages on T-Shirts, buttons and such is considered “Electioneering” (defined as, To work actively for a political party). To prevent voter intimidation, electioneering is not allowed near some state’s’ voting booths. Be sure to look into restrictions in your neck of the woods.”

Enjoy Hallowe’en. This year I’m wearing my own face.

“I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.”

I recently traveled from Nebraska to Palm Springs, California with my partner of 19 years just so that once in our lifetimes we could say that we were “married”. It was a tiny service with no mention of God or religion and no christians were harmed during the service. We plan on spending the rest of our lives together whether we are married or not.

I sometimes wonder if those who object so strongly might really be worried about gay folks co-opting the use of the word “married”. If thats the case, I say we just draw the line at the courthouse: from now on ALL unions between consenting adults be called “Civil Unions”. If you want to be “Married” go find a church that will have you and do it there.

As an object of scorn and ridicule at many of those places, you might not see me in the pews wishing you well, but I’ll be at the reception because I love a good party.

It’s the state that will not then recognize it as a legal contract. Funny (strange, not haha), huh? Since the anti love position is always some nonsense about God hating fags or something.

How about this: How about we all have civil unions and then people who want God to consecrate it can go to a church for that.

I knew the importance of legitimizing medical decisions on behalf of the other partner, but I didn’t really think about so many other benefits, like social security survivor benefits. We Americans need to get over old, fundamentalist restrictions about marriage and allow ALL our citizens to receive the same marriage benefits, regardless of sexual orientation.

For the record, I’ve been in my first-and-only (so far!) heterosexual marriage for 38 years now…I’m white, female, and pissed off that any “legal” family member, possibly estranged for years from their gay relative, can arbitrarily kick out of a hospital room the loving partner of the sick patient. The legal family member can make life-and-death decisions that exclude the loving partner who holds no legal standing with the patient. That is just not right, and it needs to stop. Here’s a list of benefits to marriage that I found:

And, even at 50 years old, I remember those “whites only” signs and, as a child, not understanding the implications. Now as a lesbian, I do understand the implications. I live them every day. My partner is an Iraq War vet with PTSD and we walked that journey together. Unlike straight couples, we had no support. But here we are, years later and still just as strong and just as committed to one another. To tell either of us that we cannot formalize our union, and use the word “marriage” (dear god don’t offend the religious right), is the ultimate in offensive.

Keep talking. We’re listening. And you make a difference. I mean it.

  138. Helen,
This is my stand on gay marriage (this is tongue- in-cheek so everyone chill):

Why is it that only straight people feel that they are the only ones who have the right to be in a miserable marriage? Spread the misery around!!! Give gay’s the right to join in miserable matrimony! Just think how much it can help our economy!?! Hey, them people are extravagant, can you imagine the excess at the ceremonies?—all that costs money and boosts the peripheral wedding businesses! And then when they subsequently get divorced, again, let them spend money on divorce lawyers! So, in one fell swoop, you help the gay community, you help the small businesses, you help a portion of the law community and you further our evolution as a species by expanding civil liberties!!!

As far as the over-fed gal on The View—-maybe the show should be called The Partial View.

  139. Helen, let me add myself to the list of those who adore you. I’m 63 — do you like younger men?

Above someone commented that interracial marriage was illegal sixty years ago; actually, it was just forty-one years ago that the Supreme Court struck down those laws in Loving v. Virginia. To people born since then it is inconceivable that interracial marriage was once illegal; let’s hope that in another forty years people will be just as amazed that same-sex marriages were once illegal.

A major part of the problem is that the state got mixed up with the churches by codifying the sacrament of marriage. There are civil aspects of marriage and there are religious ones; they should be separate. Those churches which do not want to perform same-sex marriages should not have to, just like traditional catholic churches will not marry divorced persons. Those who do not want a church ceremony don’t have to participate in one, they can have a secular, civil ceremony.

Keep the civil contract and the religious commitment separate; no good comes of mixing church and state.

  144. Sherry Shepard is her name and she makes Sarah Palin look like a genius. She stated on one show that someone had to prove to her that the world is round. That was the last time I watched The View. I’m not sure that trumps Sarah’s belief that dinosaurs and man walked the earth at the same time but it is close.
Now about gay marriage. Imagine that Harold has been hospitalized and you are not allowed to nag him in his death bed. Though you have been living together for decades and even raised a family together you were never legally married so the hospital would not consider you family and you wouldn’t be allowed into his room. This happened to a couple friends of mine who had been living together for almost 10 years. One of them was involved in a car crash and was in intensive care for a couple days. The other one wasn’t allowed to visit him before he died because only immediate family was allowed in. Then since he hadn’t made out a will the deceased blood family made a big stink about the inheritance even though they had had almost no contact with him since he announced he was gay. So even though marriage may not be as wonderful as you imagine it is could be, there are some legal benefits that all couples that commit to a relationship should be granted automatically. I hope that helps you understand why they should be allowed to be legally married.

  150. I agree with pretty much everything this blog says, both the things Helen says and most of the comments. And I must be a glutton for punishment because I watch the view everyday and yell at EH – and then rant to my husband later on about her asinine comments. 🙂 She’s a year or two older than me, and I don’t know how anyone my age can be so staunchly a republican in these times.

I cannot wait to vote for Obama on Tuesday – I am thrilled Election Day is finally so close, and yet it still seems too far away, especially every time I see McCain ads-GRRR.

However, my one comment, because it’s something I see a lot when the issue of gay marriage arises, is that saying things like, well marriage isn’t that great in the first place, so let the gays have it too, that seems wrong to me. Because I am married, I love being married, and I think marriage is a wonderful thing when done the right way. And I believe that gay people should be allowed to be married to each other for that reason. I just feel the other comment makes it sound like we all wouldn’t be for gay marriage if marriage was the most amazing, wonderful thing out there.

Disparaging marriage and then saying because it’s so bad who cares if gay men and women enter into it, is sort of a backhanded remark. Kinda like when that crazy lady called Obama an A-RAB and McCain said (not an exact quote) “no, ma’am, he’s an upstanding family man” as if an Arab man could not be an upstanding family man.

I am for gay marriage, and not because of the divorce statistics of heterosexuals. If there were no divorce, I’d still be for gay marriage. If every marriage ever in existence was filled with pure bliss (HA), I’d still be for gay marriage. And even though so many marriages end in divorce and it certainly isn’t always the best thing for all people who enter into it, I’m still for gay marriage. There is no reason gay people shouldn’t have every right to experience the highs and lows of this union like all the rest of us-and the legal rights that come with it.

Gay marriage should absolutely be legal on the state level, I don’t even comprehend why that’s a question. I guess I can understand why some religions, and sects of religion, might not allow it, if it’s not a part of their beliefs, but states have no reason not to allow it. I won’t even get started on religion, what I see as the absolute corruption of the message of Jesus. To say a quick thing though, from what I understand, he was about NOT judging others.

I’m not a religious person, when I got married it was in front of a judge, not a priest, preacher, reverend, etc…etc…and just to repeat my point:) I see no reason why 2 woman or 2 men who want to join together for life can’t do it the same way I did.

My friend “married” her wife (I live in PA so it’s not a legal union here) and it’s been ridiculous to see the paperwork she’s had to do just to change her name. They had their ceremony over a year ago and still haven’t made the name change official because of the red tape. Changing my name was free and easy. They need a lawyer to draw up papers to give them the same rights that I immediately got when I married my husband. I think it’s a sad and ridiculous state of affairs.

And I’ve had the same thought many times, it’s exactly like the “whites only” signs (though I am only 30 so didn’t so those in person.) You put an amendment against gay marriage in the constitution, and that’s like giving people a right/validation to their prejudices. There’s enough prejudice in the world as it is, certainly in this country without banning things to groups in the constitution.

We still have a lot to overcome in America, we are, in the history of the world, still a relatively young country and we have a lot of growing up to do. I hope WHEN Obama wins (HE MUST!!) we are able to take a huge step in getting over some of these issues. But a constitutional amendment against a group of people, in this day and age (not that it would ever be good) is disgusting.

I truly feel that if McCain wins it will be a sad day, because the close minded Americans will have won. That’s not the way to step into the future, especially the future of AMERICA.

I LOVE my country, I am thrilled to be an American, but that doesn’t mean I can’t question it and hope that it can improve, certainly in some areas, it needs to improve to move forward.

All this said, I do love this blog, I’ve been here every day for a couple of weeks and it is a source of sanity for me in what so often seems like an insane world (like driving down the street and seeing a “Sarah Palin” sign – not a McCain/Palin sign, but just Palin – WTF???)

    OBAMA ’08!!!!!!!!!!!

My partner, now spouse and I have been together for 26 years under the force of nothing else but the love we have for each other. Last month we went to West Hollywood and got married, our witness was a friend who has been married for almost 50 years to her husband. It was such a special day. The ceremony was in a park not far from City Hall, the sun was shining and even the people in the park wished us well. Whatever happens we’ll still love each other and be together but darn it, we had our special day.

You’re the best Helen, God bless you.

  153. California’s Prop 8 is a civil rights issue. Marriage affords people over 1,000 rights that a Civil Union or Domestic Partnership does not.

    http://lesbianlife.about.com/od/wedding/f/MarriageBenefit.htm

Creating a Domestic Partnership requires consulting an attorney and is in many ways similiar to a Pre-Nuptual Agreement, but it still cannot afford a couple many many rights that marriage can.

It is about equality, yet many religious groups are clouding the issue making by it about bringing the idea of gay marriage to schools. Certain groups have created commercials that would have one believe that we are “indoctrinating” our school children into the gay lifestyle. That is not what Prop 8 is about. http://www.noonprop8.com/about

  157. People do not realize that gay marriage is more than just saying I Do at the alter. I once had a gay couple living next door. They were great neighbors and had been together for many years. One of them got sick and while in the hosptial his partner had no say in his treatment. How would straight couples like it your partner was sick and the only people who had a say in their treatment was either a parent or someother blood relative (who they may not have seen or unfortunaltey spoken to years) had the right to talk to the doctors and make those decisions???? There are other legal aspects and rights that married couples have that gay couples are excluded from. Your right Helen – we might as well put signs out that say “straights only”.

Personally, I don’t understand why the government is in the marriage business anyway… Why not make marriage a religious and personal choice and just institute civil unions for those that want those kind of legal rights. That makes is fair for everyone without having to have some sort of value or moral judgment. Actually I have been thinking that the government might be better served by being in the licensing of children business, but I could just be nutters, ya know.

We have a similar amendment on the Florida ballot. A lot of the population here thought the “hanging chads” was a gay pop group.

Ever watch Bridezillas? The amendment should read “between a Wuss and a Bitch” based on those couples.

It’s all so ironic and boring:

    The “sanctity-of-life” demanders are willing to kill any other living creature for fun;

    Palin chastises Obama about Khalidi with her spooky, fear-mongering hyperbole, apparently “rogueing” it again since she had no clue McCain gave the same Khalidi nearly $500,000 a decade ago;

and these so-called compassionate, god-lovin’ people want to legislate that, should you love and be committed to a person of the same gender, if either of you gets gravely ill, your partner might be denied access to your bedside in the ICU.

Ahhh, five more days to go. Hang in there. In the meantime, I made a few treats for your halloween viewing pleasure. The tricks are supplied by the usual suspects: Johhny, Sarah, Elisabitch, Billo, etc. Enjoy!!

I have been a republican all my political life–although I don’t necessarily vote “the ticket”. I try to use my brain and heart and vote for the best one running in my opinion. After hearing Obama and Mcain debate I just don’t see how anyone can vote for Mcain. Obama is just so much more intellegent that it blows me away. I feel that what we need in this country right now is intellegence—-that includes someone intellegent enough to know when he needs help and seek that help out—I feel Obama is that man. He may not have the experience but he is smart enough to realize that and smart enough to seek out others and listen to others that offer help. Our country isn’t run by one man but by many. We need someone that realizes that and can listen.
Obama’s my man—I have voted already. Don’t even get me started on Palin—she is stupid to the extreme—so much so that she is just plain scary! God help us if she is elected.

As all seem to agree – you are a hoot! More importantly, sharp and point on! I tell you, I don’t think I could do a blog. There is so much material out there I think my head would just explode trying to condense down into a daily post!

For example, today I went ballistic when I heard McCain again pound Obama on the “distribute the wealth” theme, then went on to repeat his grand idea of having us taxpayers pay down the mortgages of folks that are in over their heads. As I understand it, pay off their mortgages and then write them a new mortgage at the current value of there home. What is that if not distributing wealth? That could be over $100,000 per mortgage in some cases! Now THAT is a check!

The folks that sold houses to these poor souls got their wealth, the realtors, mortgage brokers and investment bankers got their wealth. Now all taxpayers have to come bail out these folks that made bad decisions, propping up their home value which might eventually provide some wealth, and finally saving the butt of the banks that made the questionable loans in the process by essentially buying their bad loans.

Now I understand the argument about foreclosed houses pulling down neighboring house prices, but isn’t that the free market at work? Like many things, seems we like the free market in good times, but not in bad – we want it both ways. We want our cake and wallow in it too.

I guess one reason I am miffed at this is that back in 2005 after my house had doubled in value in less than 4 years, I said “this can’t continue” and I sold. Yes, I had one of those balloon mortgages, so did what I needed to to not get in trouble. Thought I would wait for the eventual fall and buy again, but now McCain wants to manipulate the market in the favor of those who cannot make sound financial decisions. Am I just whining? I heard we have a tendency to do that.

  178. This is what gets me about these stupid “Protection of Marriage” acts. Number 1) If people want to attach rules to marriage, perhaps we should start with not allowing couples to divorce after being married for 56 hours as a result of a Vegas wedding. (That was marriage number one for Britney Spears.)
Number 2) People should not just marry for financial reasons. Number 3) If you think you’re going to get divorced, don’t marry in the first place.
I could go on about the rules that could be imposed on marriage. However, I’m hoping that y’all have caught my point.
If one does not like the idea of gay marriage, I have a solution: Don’t marry someone of the same sex!! Problem solved!!!!
Otherwise, let people marry whomever we want to marry.
Even 60 years ago, there were states that did not allow interracial marriage. However, the Supreme Court decided that it was unconstitutional. We look back on our history, with pride, in most areas. However, we also have a checkered past. Our nation had slavery, Plessy v. Ferguson, the Japanese American internment during WWII, to name a few. We can no longer discriminate based upon race or sex. However, we are still practicing the discrimination of sexual orientation. We are all contributing members of society who deserve the right to love anyone we want to, and to share those benefits with our significant others. Trying to “protect” that for heterosexuals is an act of discrimination in itself. We should be ashamed for not affording everyone equal opportunity to reap those benefits that the heterosexual population has enjoyed since the birth of this nation.

It’s a nicer, more delicate way of saying “none of your business.” And (2) those who don’t want to have to admit later that they didn’t back the winner. So they wait to see which way the wind blows and put their money on the favorite so that they can smugly say later that their candidate won.

As to gays and marriage, I’ve never understood why anyone objects to two people wanting to make a legally binding commitment to each other. They’ll be together whether the law allows or not; might as well make it legal.
