You know, for a mother who has a son in Iraq, Sarah Palin doesn’t at all seem interested in bringing that war to an end. I’ve got a couple of great nephews. One of them is currently in the military. The other one works for a bank. I hope the one with a bank gets to keep his job. I hope the one in the military gets to come home. Think about it.
Now all of you get off this web page blog and go watch the debates. If they don’t put me to sleep, I’ll write something tonight.

Hi ladies. I just love, love, LOVE your blog. Have a question for you and your readers. How in the world do you handle conservative friends who send you stupid EMails about how they have to vote Republican because of their Christian beliefs. It’s true, my friends are Christian and conservative, so they come up with all the biblical stuff that is supposed to be proof positive that McCain/Palin are Christians and Obama is not since he is pro-choice. I want to tell them so badly…you aren’t voting conservative because you’re Christian, you’re voting conservative because you have always voted conservative, WILL always vote conservative, and no one asked or cares how you vote in the first place! They sent the same Christian garbage out when the shrub was running for President, and as we all know he has not done one Christian thing since he’s been in office. They obviously do not care about the 4,000 plus lives that have been lost in Iraq, or the ones that will follow, but yet they are crying over fetuses which apparently seem to have more rights than adults. They truly feel that anyone who votes against McCain is obviously going straight to hell. I resent this tremendously. I need a nice short, to the point answer. Suggestions please?

I am living in fear, Helen. I really hope you said that to get some responses. How can you say Palin’s fine character. Have you read nothing about her. She fires people at will because she doesn’t like them. She makes rape vicitims pay for their own lab kits for evidence. She allows people at her rallys to chant murderous and hateful things. The list can go on and on.
I challenge you to name 3 things that show that she is such a great leader.
Have you not watched any of her interviews? She is a dithering moron who can’t answer a straight question. Her entire (affected) speech is full of buzzwords and cliches to the point that so many are just sick of it. I thought that there would never be anyone that I couldn’t listen to more than Bush, but I found there is. Sarah Palin.
It is said that she has snowed so many with eloquent words. But when they are all put together and you analyze what she said, there is nothing of substance there.

I think that whenever we speak of Sarah Palin, it should be with reverence and awe at her fine character and remarkable abilities. We should speak of her great leadership qualities and we should be as respectful as we possibly can. If we haven’t got anything good to say, we shouldn’t say anything.

I actually laughed out loud. The bottom line is that the supporters of the republican party have become so narrow minded that it ‘s frightening. I have voted republican before because of the candidate not the party. And no I never voted for Bush. (hell, no) But the reference to the Klan is not too far off the mark. I was going to say Nazi’s but same difference. These die hards come across completely intolerant of any person or opinion that differs from them. Wow. They scare me. I find a couple things scary about Barack too but the fanatical attitudes of the new republicans give me no option but to vote for Obama.

I was actually snoozing during the last debate (although I was trying to stay somewhat tuned in). I came out of my stupor in an uproar when I heard McCain confusing a child who has Down’s with others who have autism. As a mother of a 24 yr old with autism and a professional in the field of children’s mental health I know that: 1. There is no comparison of these disorders. 2. Sarah Palin has not even begun to know what it is like to be an advocate of a disabled child. Her child is only a few months old. She has no basis of experience in dealing with disabilities for her own child or anyone’s child. She is clueless.

Hi Chris! I’m still fired up as a matter of fact. When she smacks her stained lips and talks her special needs talk I actually throw up in my mouth. Gross.
And YUP, somewhere (I’ll look for it later for you, time constraints today) I read a whole detailed article of how the DS baby could not possibly be hers. even though ‘older’ mom’s have a higher instance of having a DS baby, I also know a teen mom of one, that I helped get on her feet and taught her about advocating her childs needs. So, yes, it is possible. The article gave very, very compelling evidence. One was her stomach didn’t grow. She may be mid sized, but we all know you’d have to be of large girth to hide a baby. There are more points of course, I will post the article later. Very compelling indeed.
I think all the parents of special needs kids need to form an Anti-Palin group. Something like “Parents of Special Needs Kids Against Palin”. That oughtta rattle some cages, eh?

I talked to a young man that just got back from Iraq and he was bothered that there was negative sentiment about Iraq. He went on for more training after his leave. 2 months later, another young man came back severely wounded. His mind was fine but he could not use his arms. legs or even talk. Machines kept him alive. He was asked if he wanted to live his life in a condition which would not change. He was married. He chose to take away the machines and died quietly surrounded by those who loved him. The high school that he attended held a ceremony for him. It was packed. Starting wars for oil has a heavy cost.
We are still looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction and Bin Laden though.

Hi Helen! I’m baaaack!! I wanted to add to this post the fact that SP is running around pretending to be the champion for special needs children. HELLO? Who in the hell is this pathetic woman trying to fool here? Sorry if I sound unsympathetic, but how exactly does she know what issues she will be facing when her baby (actually, I heard it was really Bristol’s baby, go figure, and she’s preggo AGAIN???) is only a few months old?
My middle son is a special needs child. He is the light and love of my life, and he does not need a clueless woman like Failin’ going to ‘fight’ for his rights, when she clearly has no clue yet what those even are!
I tell ya Helen, it’s a direct slap in the face to any parent of special needs children. Right now, Sarah is the ‘fun’ baby stage, she hasn’t even had a small taste yet of what’s in store. All she knows is she has a baby with down’s, that’s it. So how exactly does this qualify her as a advocate for children with special needs?
How many IEP’s has she sat through in tears with wary teachers? How many specialists has she been to, and almost lost her job as a single mom over missing too much work? Has she lost her medical insurance for her family and had to fight tooth and nail for services? Has she sat up every night for the past 13 years worried about her child growing up to be a functional adult? Has she had to make ‘the plans’ for his special care in the event of her eventual demise? Has she cried tears of anger when the playground bully kicks dirt in her kids face and calls him atrocious names? All the while, the bully’s ‘parents’ sit and watch and do NOTHING? I say, what does she know of it yet? NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Right now, she’s still coming to terms with the fact, yet has not gone through anything special needs parents are unfortunatly bound to go through. How can she call herself a champion of special needs kids?
I’m telling you, this has me really fired up, and if I came face to face with this ‘woman’ I would tell her exactly what to expect. The simple fact is, she will probably NEVER experience ANY of these things. At least to a modest degree that is. Why? Because she will have nanny’s, reliable healthcare, private schools, and her God knows what else! It is insulting is what it is. She knows nothing!! INSULTING.

Basheert- no worries. I know I didn’t make it clear, if one had not read Carol’s comment, which made me compose my response. So, to alleviate any misunderstanding, my comments were not to be taken seriously.
As an aside, I was in Sierra Vista (AZ) for six months of training (while I was in the military) back in ’99. The anniversary of the Navy occurred during my stay, which meant that all 30 of us sailors on post attended the Navy Day Ball. An invitation was sent to Sen. McCain to be the Guest of Honor that evening and he had accepted the offer. However, a few weeks prior to the ball, he cancelled.
Let’s just say that, although I was not very aware of him politically, as I am now, I did not care for him, as a person.
Jump forward three years: I separated from the military and joined the world of the working stiff. In addition, I enrolled in college and began my path of working towards a degree in Political Science. (Still not done… again, working stiff by day with no Sugar Daddy in my life.) Through my studies, formally and informally, I have always looked at candidates, on both sides of the fence. From this, I can say that I have not voted a straight ticket. I vote for candidates (even on local level) based upon who matches up with my ideological beliefs.
Although, Sen. McCain showed his ass to 30 sailors 9 years ago, I gave him an opportunity, by researching his voting record, back to when he served in the House of Reps. Even by putting my personal feelings towards the man to the side, I still have come to the conclusion that he is not the right man for the job. Also, through observation, I find that he has resorted to making statements at campaign stops, in interviews, and in debates, such as last night, with the idea of spreading ignorance and scaring Americans into voting for him, instead of focusing on the issues. Perhaps it works for the Carols of this world. However, I’d like to believe that through the bullshit and through my own experience, I still am enough of an independent thinker (and voter), to have given him an opportunity to prove himself.

Diana – re: your comment about checking citizenship. Many people in our area (Arizona) have GREEN CARDS – they are not citizens but can work legally in this country. They are currently being hounded and harrassed by a psycho sheriff who has been sued numerous times for deaths in our local hoosegow….the most recent one captured on videotape.
Legal aliens are allowed to work – also, if you call a service company, THEY are responsible for validating citizenship, i.e. house cleaning, landscaping. It is not up to us to hound and harass people and have them prove citizenship.
That’s what the “E-verify” program is all about.
You really must relax more … your anger and fear are clouding your judgment.

Normally I have a policy of asking for proof of citizenship prior to allowing contractors to come in my home. Whenever I find out that they are not citizens, I take their picture and report them to the FBI since that means that they must be terrorists. However, I was so distracted by my number one hero, Sen. McCain’s diatribe about “Joe the Plumber” that he slipped through my invisible border. I was sure to call the FBI’s hotline providing a description of the plumber so that there will be one less terrorist out there. I take comfort in knowing that in a small way, I am supporting the American economy by beaconing the service of a plumber who had to drive to my house in his gas-guzzling van. Thusly, he had had to purchase more gas because of my appointment. Oh…I should also throw in my personal mantra of the past month and a half… *clears the throat* “DRILL BABY DRILL”

Funny thing… with the whole “Joe the Plumber” deal. During the debate, I had a plumber in my house searching for a leak. His name was not Joe, nor is he a citizen. However, he did say that if his name were Joe, he would still vote for Obama. To Nancy…the Fruitcake lady was feisty like Helen, ’tis true; but very much unlike Helen was a conservative with common sense.
To Kat…the military has always been an option for young men (and women) who are not college-bound. It has been a wonderful opportunity for our son who has done 2 tours in Iraq. Too many people in our country fail to realize just how important finishing the job in Iraq is to our future security. Our enemies are just biding their time, knowing that our soft society has no stomach for a long, tedious war and if we elect B. O. we will play right into their hands. Iraq is a politically and strategically important stronghold for our country and we MUST not leave until the job is done.
As for Stephanie Miller, I actually played softball with her back in Lockport, NY. She is certifiable and always has been. If she is your primary source of political information, then your knowledge is sorely lacking. Her wonderful father must be rolling over in his grave on a daily basis.

Okay, I watched part of the debate. Am I the only one who heard McCain say, “Palin is a breast of fresh air…er, breathe of fresh air?” Was I hallucinating, or is my hearing going in my old age?
Looking forward to your take on it. It will be the first time I have seen the debate BEFORE I read your blog.
You do know you have a new career, yes? You need to be a columnist for the New York Times, or Salon.com or ??
This blog is just too small for you, despite your growing popularity. Everyone I have sent the link to (and there have been dozens) have sent it on to even more dozens.
I’d rather have Helen from Texas hit the national stage than Palin from Alaska, any day.

I spoke with a US Marine yesterday that was on his way to Kuwait and then to Iraq (I work at an airport). His leave was over and he was returning to do his job…to train the Iraqis. He mentioned that he wasn’t liked very much over there and had to watch his back because of his job. That led to a discussion about contractors and then to the cost of this war. This marine told me that there are contractors in Iraq that are being paid $130,000 a year to watch the Iraqis clean toilets. That’s the guys job! To WATCH someone clean shit off of a toilet. Another contractor, being paid over $130,000 a year to write down the plate numbers that are on trucks that need fuel. They don’t even pump the fuel, all they do is write a number down! This blew my mind. US Military personnel are paid FAR less while they are putting their lives on the line and its ridiculous that this has been accepted for so long. I admit that I’m naive, but I’m making every effort to change that. I’m ready for change.
I’m interested to hear what you thought about the debate. I felt that Obama was continuously attacked and I didn’t like McCain’s smug attitude. All McCain did was kiss a lot of Christian a**.

Considering McCain’s obvious decline during the stresses of the election, he won’t LAST 4 years in office.
Sweet little Miss Moosemeat wants to waltz into a tastefully-decorated mansion (courtesy Madame McCain) and put her lugged boot prints on every white-washed wall. Sarah and her cronies will make Andrew Jackson’s inauguration look like a dainty, proper tea party and the “First Dude” will park his bike – and everything else – in the oval office!
Isn’t it obvious why Palin couldn’t care less about ending the war? She doesn’t want her drug-doper son messing up HER good times in the White House!
Think about it: can you see the Secret Service being sent out to D.C. street corners for a nightly drug pick up for the First Son?!
It was the military or time (in jail) for that little reject from the Alaska-first party. (She would have sent her “abstinence-only” daughter too, but the military doesn’t want 2-fer deals these days.)
Pity the military wouldn’t take Sarah, but there is that little oath thing about serving one’s country instead of one’s self. The loyalty oath is completely out the window, too. She is “Palin first, Alaska second, then everyone else… THEN McCain.”

I love what you have to say about McCain and Palin. I agree whole-heartedly! I’ve always been a diehard Democrat, but nevertheless I am appalled that McCain thought SHE could swing us women voters. Give me a break, I have a few more brain cells than that.

I am a grey haired, native Texan who recently moved to another state. I didn’t meet many like you while I lived in Texas 62 years. It’s great to know another “mature” Texan has my views.
I also heard you on Stephanie Miller. I am in Texas now working Hurricane Ike castrophe but have already voted for Obama. Maybe my vote will really count for the first time since I no longer live in Texas.

My father was in Viet Nam when I was born and my mother told me she was really disturbed by the “make the sacrifices count” argument for continuing that war. As she put it, losing her younger brothers wouldn’t make the loss of a husband any easier to bear. (As it happens, Dad made it out safely and my parents are currently in their 39th year of marriage.) There can be real reasons for putting our young people in harm’s way, but there is NO reason to not try and take them out as soon as possible. Wanting to bring troops home IS supporting them.
Again, thank you for sharing your wisdom. You have no idea how much I enjoy your blog and the perspective I gain from it.

Another word for wolves is “native dogs”. Does it help to put Palin in perspective to consider that she enjoys nothing better than getting in an airplane and shooting native dogs?
Anyhow, I seriously think McCain is showing intermittent signs of dementia — that explains the weird wandering, the erratic behavior, the mood shifts and just generally losing it. Sad perhaps, but despite Regan and Bush Jr, not a qualification for presidency.
