Maverick my ass!

I don’t know everyone. That one was a snoozer. Halfway through the debate I looked over and Harold was asleep in his chair, and somehow I think so was much of America. In the VP debate we couldn’t get Palin to answer the questions and in this debate every time it got interesting Tom called time – it was frustrating.

You can comment all you want on who won and who didn’t. I haven’t got a clue. But here is what my heart is telling me. I am 82 years old (83 in December). It’s time to hand the reigns over to the next generation and hope that we did a good job raising them. To Senator McCain I say, with love in my heart, sit down and shut up. You’re beginning to look like an ass and your answers sound like a cross between Barnie Fife and Floyd the Barber. And no matter how many times you start a sentence with “My friends” if you end it with a bunch of stuff that really doesn’t make sense… well eventually someone like me is going to call “bullshit”.

Actually, let me state that a little differently. ALL OF US have to call “bullshit” right now. There is too much at stake. You can’t agree with George Bush all of the time and then say you are about change. You can’t say the economy is strong in the morning and then say it’s a crisis that afternoon. You can’t be about deregulation for 25 years and then suddenly be against it. And for God’s sakes war can’t be the answer to everything.

You just can’t teach an old dog a new trick… even if you put lipstick on it. Change is needed. I know because I am a fat, old dog. For too many years I’ve been eating more pie than I should. Jenny Craig had me doing pretty good for a few years but eventually I started eating pie again. John McCain has been part of the Republican party in Washington for 26 years. It doesn’t matter what he has been saying the last few months, eventually he’s going to eat the party pie again. He’s old. I’m old. That’s what we do. We don’t suddenly switch to salad.

It’s OK. We’ve been part of the greatest generation. We had our turn. Now we get to sit back and enjoy our pie while someone else worries about the calories. The new guy has the energy and the new ideas. Senator Obama, I hope you’re up for the challenge.

One more thing for Senator McCain before this old bird goes to bed. Ronald Reagan is dead. Let it go.

As always, Helen, You. Are. Right. On! I have to chuckle sometimes that so many younger people are amazed because someone at your age is able to think and write as you do. I’m 64 and have several friends in their late 70s and early 80s who are also bright, intelligent, and thoughtful, and who can write well. They write columns for our local newpaper, work with the League of Women Voters, and are involved with Toastmasters, among other things. THANK YOU not only for your fantastic blog, which is my top favorite, but also for showing the younger generations how vibrant and truly alive one can be in her later years. You have wisdom as well as great common sense. Keep up the good work!

So far I’ve only read 3 of your posts, this late november night in Europe, but I’m looking forward to reading the last bunch, and hoping for more in the future!

I just wanted to tell you, how refreshing it is to get a more nuanced picture of americans today. In Europe it’s quite easy to get the impression, that you’re all fat, shallow, trigger-happy, religious fanatics, so I’m glad to see not all of you have lost it!

Helen, I’m in Louisville, and I have a sharp-witted pal in Alabama, and our new goal is to be you when we’re in our 80s. You ROCK! I always thought that the older generation was more conservative, but you are what I hope to be in 40 more years. You tell it like it is. You’re right. And you make NO apologies. And you swear. I like all of that. You’re one up on me, though, since you know how to blog and I don’t. Need to get on that. Right now, though, I need to send out some more emails for Obama. Holy Toledo. Helen! I am so impressed with how clearly and succinctly you young kids of 82 think and write! I like your style! I am 84, going on 85, and I try to write the sort of essays you do, but they don’t come out as bright or sassy or pithy as yours do! I’ve been a widower for two years now and, after the first year, I began checking out the local tootsies. Such disappointment! All they wanted to do was feed me chicken soup and roast brisket and teach me to play mah jongg! That wasn’t what I was looking for! I couldn’t get a single one of them to talk to me about politics or the election or anything other than do I like the color of their hair rinse!! Helen, help! If Harold keeps falling asleep at the TV, and you want someone to talk politics to, meet me at the local Soda Shoppe. I will buy, the first round anyway, of chocolate sodas!

Once again, I appreciate you allowing so many of us to use your personal blog pages to discuss so many of the issues that are at the forefront of our minds during this presidential election. You totally ROCK!!!

Tony,

I wish to correct you on some of the statements you made above.

First, since McCain has been in the Senate, he didn’t vote 126 of 580 times (21.7%). Obama’s record is not voting 66 of 228 times (28.9%). Granted, neither are stellar performances. What’s really interesting, however, is that if you eliminate the time prior to Obama getting into the Senate, McCain has had a record of not voting 92 of 228 times (40.4%). If my school-age girls were to get 59.6%, they would fail. My source is http://www.votesmart.org/

Second, when it comes to Obama supporting “bigger government”, I’d love to know what the source of your information is. McCain claimed in the final debate that government has grown 40% in the last 8 years (6 of which the Republicans have controlled both the White House and Congress). I also found this site http://www.brookings.edu/gs/cps/light20030905.pdf which indicates that McCain’s assessment seems to have been correct.

Third, I wish to address the “Obama will raise our taxes” argument. In the only comprehensive analysis I found regarding Obama’s plan, it stated while there was approximately $1 trillion additional spending for federal programs over his *entire* term (not each year like some of the things I’ve read/heard have said), he also plans on cutting back $1 trillion in spending over the same period of time so essentially it’s a wash. Unfortunately, I lost the site but would otherwise provide it.

On the other hand, based solely on McCain’s health plan, my taxes WILL go up SIGNIFICANTLY. He will begin to tax the approximately $24,000 my employer pays for my family’s health insurance premiums. If I assume only a 25% rate (but I think it would more likely be closer to 30%), this means that I will pay at least $6000 in taxes, my paycheck will be down by at least $500 each month, but I’ll only get a $5000 tax credit.

As this clearly indicates, it has been during the Republican (not Democratic) administrations, especially since Reagan, that our spending has gotten out of control.

I admire your spunk Helen, you sound like a neat lady who is free thinker. I just hope your right about Obama and I understand that John is not too exciting and cant really sell but has proven himself a constant fighter for what he believes in and he is honest and not controlled by the party. I honestly dont believe Obama has any idea what he believes in and has no moral compass. The chicago political machine has produced and presented him and he is slick and smooth and articulate.. I fear he is a great con man who has clearly done nothing in his career except be present for votes, his stance is clearly liberal and if you read his book the first chapter says he will redistibute wealth. I realize that the poor and down trodden will buy this and vote for him. Too many niave people believe there is a free lunch, there is not. He is clear he is for bigger government and more taxes greater entitlement programs. that is how we got where we are to much spending without economic support. Fanny and Freddy were run by his supporters and the black caucus. As one left talk show host said if you are poor, Black or unemployed you vote for Obama for entitlement programs. If you have worked and acheived any level of financial success you vote for McCain. I thought that was honest. Our nation is movng to socialism and Obama is the major turning point for this. We will be unable to sustain this financially and end up like France an unmotivated and dependent welfare state. Good luck to us and I at least grew up in America where if you were motivated to work and achieve you would be rewarded and have self esteem, that is being eroded today..I do blame Bush for not doing his job and failing his party principles. God Bless America may she survive this travesty of social virus.

Just had your blog site emailed to me. So glad to meet you “on blog”. You are a breath of fresh air, and you do state things as they are.
It is hard to keep one’s “cool” in West Texas. Seem to be surrounded by idiots that are both friends and strangers. No one wants to debate policy, just spew unproven Obama myths and state their fears if Obama is elected. There are church leaders that are preaching that Obama is the anti Christ for heavens sake. ( Overheard in “beauty shop” and gym.) In West Texas, we say “I call Bullshit.” So at the end of the day,you have made me smile and feel better.
I’ll try to stay awake during debates. Last one was a snoozer!

I wish someone would tell McCain that STEALING another candidate’s platform (Change) midway through the election is transparent. Apparently the only thing transparent in his campaign! You said it, Helen! I’m sick of that “Maverick” BS. Not that Obama is a maverick. He’s another flip-flopping phoney. He got all of these people on the anti-war bandwagon and now, all of a sudden, he’s talking about Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iran and Darfur as if we don’t have enough war going on already! It sounds like now he just wants to appeal to the war-mongering demographic.

Sadly, Obama is a change of color, not a change of policy. He’s certainly not change we can trust. It’s too bad most folks can’t dig a little deeper and see that he is another Israel-backing suckup that is going to take this country down.

My mom, a die-hard Democrat, 81 years old, young, active and sharp-minded, a smart woman who still runs her own business, doesn’t want to vote for Obama! As she says it, it would kill her to vote Republican for the first time in her life, but she can’t trust Obama. I must say, she has never listened to him speak, won’t try and understand what his ideas, plans or policies are. She apparently is listening to all the Fox News/Bill O’Reilly crap! Helen, I don’t know if you read all of these comments, but I just wanted to thank you – not only for what you write but for creating something that all of these like-minded people can come together around to celebrate all of the beautiful truths of what you have to say.

I helped to run a voter registration drive on my college campus and I am now working on a get out the vote campaign and tonight we hit a speed bump. Though registration went phenomenally well – we registered over 1,000 students to vote, the get out the vote meeting has very low turn out. I was freaking out, and I think I still am a little bit, that this campaign isn’t going to work.

Reading your post reminded me that change is necessary, and that all of this work is important, even though it can get really tough sometimes. I am both excited and scared to be a part of the generation that will inherent all of the problems we face in the world today – not that there haven’t always been problems…I am excited to be able to stand up and create positive change – get people to stop talking about all the things they want to do and actually do them. But I am scared too because there are always things that could go wrong that you can’t foresee. I know that your blog can’t answer these questions for me, but I just wanted to thank you for being a voice of wisdom for a moment in my life when things seem to be a little out of hand.

Dear Helen, I am 70 and all I can say is you go girl! There is very little that is golden about aging, but there is one bright spot. We can tell it like it is and for the most part we have the wisdom and the history to nail it dead on. And if there is one thing we have learned by this time in our lives it is that when it looks like, and sounds like and smells like bullshit it probably is bullshit.

Go Helen!!! I’m 82, and yes proudly one of the Greatest Generation. No wonder – we went through the Depression, and the horrible WW11, (which by the way was shorter than the Iraq War is). My husband served on the Battleship Maryland in the Pacific for four years, and we are still under our own power, home is paid for and no credit card debt!!! What we are seeing in our country is AWFUL. You have so eloquently said, in clear language, what makes such COMMON SENSE. All of us have been through a lot in our lives, but this election is, in my opinion, the most important one of all. It makes us sick to see how the Bush Administration has taken us down to our knees, nationally, and globally. and how McCain and Palin are so busy with their vicious divisive attacks instead of talking about how to bring about recovery. God help this country and all generations to come. Keep up the plain talk Helen – you are “so on”!

Kudos Helen. I can’t believe the morons that would choose a man that graduated 894th out of a class of 899 students and a woman that got a BS in journalism after 6 years and 5 colleges (mostly community colleges) over a Harvard JD (magna cum laude) and a Syracuse University Law JD. Since when do we want leaders who are like us? I want my leaders to be SMARTER then me…more educated…more worldly. We had 8 years of a guy we could have a beer with…I need someone who will run my country well.

By the time I scrolled to the bottom there were so many good comments I forgot what I read, and i’m only 73. I’m Margaret and I had a friend Helen who moved away and I’ve lost contact now. One of the greatest thing about getting older is that we can say what we want without being too harshly criticized. People thing we’re senile. That’s ok. I think McCain is an idiot, maybe suffering dementia praecox. and Palin certainly does not speak my language as I keep hearing on the tv. I think she’s about the scariest thing I ever heard of as if Halloween started in Alaska. I keep waiting for someone to yell April fool!
Something that blows my mind personally is that I grew up in a very conservative family, almost Birchers, and my brothers still are that way. I got over it and I’m thankful.

You’ll find that McCain has stronger, more recent and more disturbing terrorist (and other criminal) associations than Obama, but it seems quite likely that neither of them is in a Sleeper Cell.

America clearly has bigger things to worry about. Maybe, McCains proposed SOCIALIST $300B buyout of mortgages is a good place to start?

Rather than ranting about “liberals” or “socialists” or whatever, how about trying to pull on the rope with the rest of us?

Or, you can just pull that tinfoil hat firmly down around your ears and go do ya some REAL terrorist huntin’, and good luck with that.

I continue to be surprised at the vituperative tone of some of these comments. If you have blogs do you behave this way to people who comment on your sites?

I served this country for twenty years and recall my oath to defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Since the constitution grants us the right to express our opinions you all have the right to express it. Granted Helen is somewhat forthright and candid in her opinion (which I applaud) but I do not see the need for such personal attacks on Helen to make your counterpoint. Just state your objections without being objectionable.

Resorting to nitpicking misspelled words (which are most likely typos ) or imperfect grammar in an attempt to embarrass and detract from Helen’s views does nothing to support your own views. It simply makes you seem petty and small.

If you wish to make your case for your points of view I suggest a more powerful approach is to write your own posts in your own blogs. I am fairly certain that most of us left leaners will simply pass you by.

Helen, I welcome your thoughts on other topics.

I have to agree, this is a hilarious blog. Just absolutely hilarious!

Unfortunately, I do not believe any one on this site that agrees with Senator Obama will be laughing this much when you are broke, out of a job and waiting for your government check to arrive – but to no avail!

As a former Marine, I could not vote for President Bush a second time (since he too is a socialist), but I could not vote for Senator Kerry – he is a traitor! Any man that lies about combat veterans to better his chances of being elected is a traitor!

But at this point, I would vote for Senator Kerry before I could even consider voting for Senator Obama. His lack of experience, his extremely liberal views, his socialist indoctrination with Ayers and so many more issues that the media refuses to take a true interest in investigating or reporting makes this man unfit to be Commander in Chief! Senator Obama is MORE unfit than a traitor!

Good Bless America, because we are going to need all the blessings and prayers we can muster if this man is elected!

You are my favorite political blogger so far and I applaud you for calling bullshit when you see it. I am a journalism major and all I keep seeing are supposedly intelligent journalist saying that Sarah Palin is going to do a good job in the White House and John McCain is going to bring real change. Maybe I’m still wet behind the ears being all of 23 But what the hell people! I feel the need to remind these supporters that they are supporting a woman who had to go to FIVE different schools to get a BA in journalism, which by the way is freaking blasphem and I was really thinking about quitting after I heard that, and McCain was 5th from the bottom of his graduating class in the naval academy. All I have to say is WTF!!! We have a C student in the White House right now and we see what a bang up job he’s done in the last 8 years and now your trying to elect father time and his nursemaid into the office as well. Please people for the sake of my genereation and generation to come don’t let anymore idiots be responsible for the well being of our country. We need some new blood in the White House to shake things up a bit and having McCain and Palin in the office is not the way to do it.
Oh and before I go I have to talk directly to my fellow women out there in cyber space: Please honestly listen to what Palin is saying and what she doesn’t say. She is setting the women’s movement so far back it practically 1812 already. That fact that any woman hockey mom or the corporate business woman can sit there and say that they support a woman that does not support a woman’s right to choose is not only scary i think you might want to make sure you have the right equipment to say your a woman in the first place. If we won’t stand for a man telling us what we can and can not do with our bodies why should be support one of our own telling us the same thing. Think about ladies.

From Georgia, correct? Where in Ga.? My Philpot descendants were from the Buchanan area. My mom and dad would have loved you. I’ve been to too many Jefferson and Jackson dinners. I’ve lived in the fringes of politics all my life. I’ve moved all over the South, from North Alabama, with a stop in Mississippi to New Orleans, to Tennessee and Kentucky, Alabama (again), Virginia and back to the Magnolia State. So I’ve seen the effects of trickle down economics in many places, it does not work. My mom and dad were buried with their Yellow Dog pins. My sisters and I are described that way also.
Bring back FDR, Lyndon, and Jack!

This is Governor Sarah Palin responding to the smart-aleck comments made by an old “lady”.

First of all, being mayor of Wasilla, Alaska was not an easy job (like being a Chicago Community Organizer). I had to lobby for, and get, a traffic light for our one intersection (Glacier St. and Caribou Ave.) It has saved lives. Once, we had a collision between two dogsleds driven by wild teenagers who were mushing too fast. Traffic is now being controlled by Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. His blinking, red nose alerts drivers to the danger of speeding dogsleds. Does this kind of thing count for executive experience? You betcha (wink, wink).
OK, I actually voted FOR the “Bridge to Nowhere”, but so many people said they lived in Nowhere, Alaska that I thought it was a real place and needed a bridge for all those people.
We have a very close-knit community here in Wasilla. Because of thoughtful in-breeding, we are all family here.
Being so close to Russia gives me a foreign policy perspective advantage. Yes, I did wonder why we had our state of Georgia all the way up here.
We also have first rate skools here. When I was in skool, I won 2 speling bees. I was disqualified because I called the moderator a very bad curse. You could say that I go 2 Bees and a MF.
My husband also went to skool here. Although he still thinks that manual labor is a Mexican and asphalt is rectum trouble.
But I digest, I just want to let you all know that the Palin – Makane ticket is the one you should vote for. You don’t have to vote for no ni, I mean, man of color.
Do I think I’m up to the job? You betcha!!!!

I am 57 years old and learned to swear from my mother who was born in 1916. She is now dead but like Helen, she had a first class crap detector installed at the factory.

I remember seeing her washing dishes at the kitchen sink, listening to the radio – when the name “Nixon” was spoken, she turned purple and became unable to speak words.

Later on, it was the same when she heard “Reagan.” When words returned to her, she swore and said she was so sorry her generation had left the world in such a terrible state for us.

I am going to be saying the same soon enough.

Hi Helen, I really admire you for starting your great blog site. I’m 75 years young and having a blast surfing around on the internet – it’s a long way from the family sitting around the old radio, listening to the news and the old time shows. I’m so impressed by the young folks who appreciate your candid and wise comments. But, I must admit that I don’t know why they are so surprised that the “elderly” can recognise bullshit when they hear it. We’ve been doing that for a lot of years. We have a treasure chest full of smarts. We grew up learning that if we wanted something, we saved our money until we could afford to buy it. Often, after we had the money, we decided that we really didn’t need to spend it and decided to save for a rainy day, instead. We didn’t worry about the brand name printed on our purses – we were proud of the money that was in it. With our economy in the toilet right now, give the “kids” some of your advice on how to survive tough times. Keep up your typin’, honey – and – also, I’ll be checkin’ on ya – you betcha!

The debate sucked! Both were acting like little kids fingerpointing and not answering questions. I read the only difference is that unlike Palin, these two know how to BS so you have to really listen to them to know that.

Even Brokaw looked more presidential than both.

This is when I hate and miss there is not a third party.

But either way I’m voting for the less of two evils or for change. I like Obama but he is not all that. I have lost all respect towards McCain and I despise and Palin scares the shit out of me.

You do not make one iota of sense. There is no logic in your opinions. Instead they are filled with emotional rants. Plus, you seem completely uninformed.

Given that you admit you are old, I would diagnose you as “crotchety”. That is cranky due to lack of any sensory input – typically a lack of sex for a very long time. I had to resort to touching myself to get through those times of being so alone. It didn’t work.

Helen, Another well crafted post. Well and truly said. I don’t know if you read many other people’s blogs but there are plenty of bloggers in the over 70 age range.

You each have much wisdom to share and I hope you will raise your voice to more issues. I think you will find at many other blogs out here that most people tend to exercise some restraint and courtesy when making comments.

It is easy to be rude and mean when you write or comment anonymously. Raising your voice and speaking your mind with your name tacked on shows the type of strength earned by your generation who know what sacrifice is about.

OH MY GOD! YOU’RE AMAZING HELEN! HAHA this was hilarious to read! i am glad that you are speaking your mind to us. Not only is it funny, but you have a lot of great points. I am a senior in high school and we are having a lot of interesting conversations about the debates and election. Im not old enough to vote but if i could it would be OBAMA ALL THE WAY BABY! i am pretty sure for every 40 people that wish to vote for Obama, there are about 3 that like McCain. And I am deffinatly loving your point that it needs to be passed to the next generation! I love love love the past generations and they’re opinions, but we need someone to lead this country who is this generation with the ideas of all generations!

I just couldn’t wait to see what you had to say today, Helen! Even though you couch your thoughts is humor, it is obvious you are a deep thinker. What a breath of fresh air.

I have to point out what I saw in last night’s debate. I saw Barack Obama, sitting relaxed and looking at the crowd with a big open smile. I have to admit, that he reminded me of JFK. (I’m 67). He was so comfortable with himself.

Meanwhile, John McCain, stood there lashing out like a little bantam rooster. I realized, watching him, that he is like a temple of pure rage. He looks like he could just explode out the top of his head and his chest! I know that his injuries have contributed to his stiffness, and I think John has had much in his life that one could be rageful about. I also think he has dished out lots of rage in his day. I don’t want him dishing it out to everyone who disagrees with him at the cost of our military.

I want our next president to be measured in his responses. I want him to carefully make decisions and call in the best experts he can to help him make the right decisions. I want him to be intellectual, and not from the bottom of his graduating class. I want him to be good at taking in what is going on in the lives of others, whatever their ideologies.

Last night, after I heard how the country had reacted to this town meeting, I slept like a baby.

I wish someone would have given some juice to the debate last night and asked McCaine if he is so against earmarks, why did he vote to approve the 700 billion bail out with those ridiculous earmarks attached?

For people wondering about Palin, simply check out the local newspapers in the State of Alaska. I’ve been a resident in Alaska for the last 36 years. I can only say that Palin will be caught in her own web of lies and deceit. It’s unfortunate that she has not taken an honorable role to further advance women and women in politics.

Of course Ricardo – nothing can be changed overnight, but something has to happen to get us in the right direction. I don’t think McCain will do that. I believe Obama is the person we need to lead us in the right direction. He may not be able to change everything right away – but we need to start moving in that direction.

I’ve told my husband since this campaign started.. “No matter who becomes President they won’t be able to end the war in Iraq. This war was started and has to be finished no matter who takes office and no matter who started it.” Most of us realize this, but something needs to happen now to get us in the direction to end this war sooner rather then later.

The economy is not going to fix itself overnight either. That’s a big NO SHIT! But again we need to move this country in the right direction so we don’t get dug deeper into this whole. I don’t think McCain can help begin the process of digging us out.

As for it not being all GW Bush’ fault – I agree – it was the government and the people as a whole. We all brought us here. Some people buying more then they should – or purchasing more expensive houses then they could afford.

We all caused the economy to go to hell in a hand basket.

But no matter what happened I know who I want to help the future of this country – OBAMA!! I know McCain won’t be the leader we need to dig us out of this whole. He is too ignorant, bullheaded, and too damned old. I’m sorry but with him as president we are a 74 year old heart attack away from Palin being president – and I sure as hell don’t want that!! I won’t even start with my opinion on that lady…

It is sad how deluded we’ve become as a nation. From economics to the war in Iraq, the sad reality is that neither of these men will really change anything. In four years, we’ll be facing down the same longstanding economic issues and we’ll still be in Iraq. We’re still in the Balkans (for over 10 years), still in the Sinai (for over 25 years…). We’ve been losing whole industries for decades, the “American Dream” has become harder and harder to attain… and let’s be intellectually honest, it wasn’t all GW Bush’s fault… it’s been headed that way for decades also. We are working more and enjoying the meager fruits of that labor less and less.

Despite all the promises and the standard big talk, there is no concrete difference between McCain and Obama. I’m betting that in four years, regardless of who wins this election, the issues will be the same, the economy will still be sputtering, the middle class will continue to struggle, and we’ll still be at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Any takers?

It actually takes comments made by McCain and Obama about the opposing candidate and checks to see if they are true or not. It’s wonderful. (They discuss some of this after every debate, but I never have time to watch that late – so I check here instead.)

**Surprisingly the majority of comments McCain makes about Obama are false or misleading, which we all already know, and almost all of Obama’s comments are true about McCain.

I too am calling bullsh*t! Many people are yearning to also be part of a great generation and I feel it’s being kept from us in many ways. As part of the next generation, it is our turn and we must change things. I will do my part by making the right vote next month – For Obama & Biden. I will also continue to teach my kids to be thoughtful and kind, honest and unafraid.

You enjoy your pie as you have earned it. Leave the footwork to us, Helen, and hopefully we can make the older generations (my parent’s and yours) as well as the future generations (like my kids) proud for what we came together and did to turn this place around and get it back on track.

I’m with you about McCain, Helen. I don’t think he’s as much a maverick as he is a loner. Last night, the few people he talked about working with in Washington were Lieberman, who is neither Republican nor Democrat, and maybe a couple of others. Two or three times, he mentioned the same few names. That tells me that McCain does not have many friends now in Washington, and he still won’t have friends AFTER the election when he needs support for his policies. He came across last night as being way out of his league…a very tired, very bitter man with little to say beyond his few “talking points”.

It is apparent that McCain believes now that the ONLY way he can win the election is to throw mud at Obama so we don’t look too closely at McCain. McCain desperately wants the voters to forget that the economy is in the toilet, and he helped put it there. The country’s financial problems began going to hell-in-a-handbasket with the savings and loan fiasco 20 years ago. He was one of the Keating 5 and was criticized for exercising “poor judgment”. His record since then shows that his judgment hasn’t improved much in the intervening years. No one should forget that McCain has voted WITH Boy George and the rest of the Republicans MOST of the time. They are all cut from the same cloth. And it is tattered, stained, worn out, and needs to be tossed out with the rest of the trash in Washington.

Helen, you rock. I love your comments. Keep it up, and say “hi” to Harold for us.

Someone sent me your blog re: Sarah Palin. Finally, someone has the courage to say it and say it oh so well.
I am 65, can’t afford to retire but called an eastern elite since I live in New York City. Am a social worker so automatically a bleeding heart liberal. Once sat in a room with Bill Ayers so now also palling around with a terrorist. have a son and daughter in law in the Army and lay awake nights worrying about them being separated again.
Sarah Palin is no feminist, not a patriot and a singularly uninteresting woman. She is intolerant and I’ve rarely seen or heard anyone who takes such pride in her own stupidity.

The last time I watched a presidential debate was in 1980, when CNN tried to use fledgling technology to insert John Anderson into the debate he’d been excluded from. Since then none of them have been worth watching.

I agree with you Helen I am not about to debate about who won the debate.
The real win comes with the White House. A person young or old cannot be against something for 25 years and all of sudden vote for a cause that they never believed just to get into the White House. Obama does have the energy and the excitement and he is still committed to a common sense plan as when he became a Senator.

I’m a lawyer, so let me school you — you don’t learn poise and likability in law school. You either have it or you don’t. Obama just has it. And even though McCain is not nearly as educated, he could also have it. HE JUST DOESN’T.

good morning to you from las vegas. that truly was a snoozer. i kept waiting for something new from both but i heard the same old stuff – my mind wandered off somewhere, maybe i missed a few important points? from a stylistic point, mccain was uptight and dismissive and obama relaxed and confident. i think i’ll have some pie now.

Helen, I absolutely love your blog and your willingness to speak truth to power.

You remind me of my own dear sweet grandmother–as she got up a bit in years, she quit caring what other people thought, refused to be quailed by “rules of the polite middle class,” and cut loose.

If I have half the wisdom and good sense when (if!) I reach 80+, I’ll consider myself blessed.

A wonderful former student sent me this link. I am currently commissioning a statue of her to be placed in my back yard. THIS IS A GREAT BLOG!
I too am an older retired American who is smart and knows INSTANTLY what magazines I read. HEY, MAYBE I COULD BE VICE-PRESIDENT!! (“What DOES a vice-president DO all day, anyway?” – one of SP’s first statements – and I use that term loosely)

Bravo Helen…..oh and yes McCain and Palin are Mavericks…..that is in the sense of the original Maverick who did not brand his cattle. Unbranded cattle were called Maverick’s AND that would include any of his neighbor’s new borns when they were rounded up for sale by Maverick.

Later Mavericks were admirable and wonderful. They were progressive social and liberal activists.

Im with Harold, Sleep. Obama was ready and willing to answer those questions and he and McCaine should have been able to have had it out.
McCaine wife didnt even shake the hand with ppl whats up with that. I would not wanna touch her either. Sometime you just can not be nice to some ppl. Hard lessons make a soft behide, and MCSAME is gonna get his due pay.

Can you please address the rally that Palin had and the outburst of “kill him” and “terrorist”?

I’m another senior who is damn tired of listening to the lies Palin/McCain (yes, I meant to say it that way) are putting forth to a confused, over-stimulated nation who is ready for change but afraid of it, too. Keep up the good work and know that you are not alone in wanting to let the younger generation (those who are qualified, if you know what I mean) lead so we can follow for a while.

Helen…you rock! Oh I wish you were my mom…see I’m not as young as these kids. My mom is 85 and she was a pistol up until a few years ago when she had a stroke and now she’s all mixed up, but she would have loved you as much as I do.

I swear that if I tried to voice my own opinion that I couldn’t do it as well as you do….

You are right on….you are a hero!!!

I’m going to share a Sarah Palin joke I made up on the fly – it’s crude, but then, so is she (and I am a rabid environmentalist)……. I was at the barn where my horses are boarded right after the Palin nomination, and as I walked up to a group of friends, they asked me how to pronounce her name ‘ PAY-lin or PAL-in. I responded “I pronounce it ‘Cunt’. Hope I made you laugh!

I couldn’t wait to read your comments today. I have to say, the wisdom you express is by far, why I so appreciate having learned the hard way in my 49 years that, AGE is more than just a number.

And kudos to you for sharing your perspectives, about this place in history being a time for “CHANGE” because in your 82 years, surely you have bore witness to a wealth of circumstances that many couldn’t even imagine having happened, let alone possess the endurance to survive.

Say what you will about the language you use, but one thing that remains a constant about how you say what you say… outta the mouths of babes and thru the wisdom of aging… neither are afraid to speak what’s really on their minds.

Then on a personal note…I gave my Grandma back to God six years ago, and just the other day I said, I need a hug from a real Grandma, so thanks again and again, for embracing me with these insightful ‘TRUTHS’ that you’re speaking here. For like her, she said what she had to say and that was that!

It makes me so happy to see there are more smart women out there then I first thought. I kept hearing that so many woman would be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. Then a friend sent me your post – knowing how much I do not like Palin- and I get to see there are more of us wise women out here then I thought.

You do such a great job of taking the words right out of my mouth. I swear everytime I hear “My friends” I want to throw the remote at the TV.

I’m also glad in the fact that the older generation is willing to take a seat and let the next generation come in… for it is our future that is at stake , and we have the most to lose from another BUSH in the office. I only wish my mother was as smart a woman as you. I’m having to do a lot of convincing and arguing to get her to see our side of things. Slowly, but surely!!!

Keep on writing.. keep on thinking.. and keep on being the wonderful outspoken woman that you are..

You and my parents are roughly the same age and you’re all singing from the same hymn sheet on this one. THANK YOU FOR POSTING and giving us weaker, younger folk some gumption, and for helping us see that we aren’t crazy: McCain really is a wrong-headed, war-loving, deceitful airhead, just like our parents have been telling us :-).

Helen, I can’t tell you how much you inspire me. As someone who’s not white, I’ve experienced racism in one form of another every day since living in Australia – most of the time from people of your generation who simply aren’t used to having non-white people around.

To see you supporting change, diversity, and youth the way you do, gives me new hope that one day Australian pensioners can grow to become as open-minded as you are.
