The blue states do earn more money and thus pay more taxes on average. One reason is their states tend to be more thickly populated and host many national and international businesses. A liberal commentator, who’s name I don’t remember was so enraged by Bush’s victory, he advocated that the blue states secede.

Our cities tend to be financially healthier than many red cities like Chicago, Detroit or Stockton. The Heartland’s unemployment rate has also been lower than the national average during the recession.
