Margaret, it appears that rape remains unpopular among likely voters, gays are people too, and Rocky Mountain High isn’t just a song. It isn’t final yet, but at the time that I am writing this, Michele Bachmann, bless her heart, might not be too popular with voters either. And while he wasn’t actually running for anything, Donald Trump proved to be unpopular with just about everyone.
Once the real news called the race for Obama, I tuned into Fox News to see if Karl Rove was giving refunds. I had to laugh at the meltdown that was happening. Karl wanted a recount in Ohio and some blonde woman with too much make-up lamented about the inconvenient truth of Hurricane Sandy. Evidently Sandy and fraudulent voters had given the election unfairly to Obama. Honey, Hurricane Sandy reminded us that we had a good man in the White House much the same way Hurricane Katrina reminded us that we had an idiot in the White House. And fraudulent voters are about as common as unbiased reporting on Fox News. I had to turn the channel back to the more civil CNN coverage with that lovely Anderson Cooper. Too much Fox makes me itch.
After running for President for nine hundred years, Mitt Romney accepted defeat and gave a surprisingly short and genuinely gracious concession speech. I was touched, truly touched, when he called for unity and wished the President success. President Obama too gave a lovely speech. He always gives lovely speeches. It was a tad bit long and I must admit I drifted off a couple of times. I am old and it was getting late.
But back to Mitt… you had me there, sir. You had me ready to put aside my partisan ways in hopes that our elected officials could come together and find common ground. I was all ready to write my letter to the President asking him to govern to the middle and bring us together. I would get a good night’s sleep and then write the letter in the morning and send it off to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
But just before I headed to bed, this flashed across my television screen:
“The American people did two things: they gave President Obama a second chance to fix the problems that even he admits he failed to solve during his first four years in office, and they preserved Republican control of the House of Representatives. The voters have not endorsed the failures or excesses of the president’s first term, they have simply given him more time to finish the job they asked him to do together with a Congress that restored balance to Washington after two years of one-party control. Now it’s time for the president to propose solutions that actually have a chance of passing the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and a closely-divided Senate, step up to the plate on the challenges of the moment, and deliver in a way that he did not in his first four years in office.”

I enjoyed reading this election and post-election reverie from this spirited team of fine ladies. Because I have to wake up at 4 to go to work on Wednesdays, I couldn’t wait for the vote counts to come in from the West Coast. As I headed off to bed, Mr. Romney was leading.
As so many singers have crooned, “What a difference a day makes.” I had to coach a team who reads the local papers to the blind. What headlines these were!! Most voters here in Georgia were not happy to learn the news. Only urbanites in a few metropolitan counties opted for Mr. O’bama (that is Irish for Dukakis, right?). The rest of the state’s voters chose Mitt.
Thanks Helen for staying up late to catch the returns.

In the United States government, executive privilege is the power claimed by the President of the United States and other members of the executive branch to resist certain subpoenas and other interventions by the legislative and judicial branches of government. The concept of executive privilege is not mentioned explicitly in the United States Constitution, but the Supreme Court of the United States ruled it to be an element of the separation of powers doctrine, and/or derived from the supremacy of executive branch in its own area of Constitutional activity.[1]
The Supreme Court confirmed the legitimacy of this doctrine in United States v. Nixon, but only to the extent of confirming that there is a qualified privilege. Once invoked, a presumption of privilege is established, requiring the Prosecutor to make a “sufficient showing” that the “Presidential material” is “essential to the justice of the case.”(418 U.S. at 713-14). If this faux outrage was really about executive privilege, Noahwestmichigan would have been so outraged at Bush that he’d have left his right wing perch.

Noah, Mr. Obama invoked executive privilege, yes, but neither he nor his administration was in any way involved in Fast and Furious. This has been investigated and determined to be so. Please look that up.
Secondly, the jury is still out on Libya, and may I remind you of the SEVEN attacks on American embassies during the eight years of the Bush administration, which resulted in 47 deaths and more than 140 injured. Add that to the 3,000 deaths on 9/11, and the nearly 4,200 US military who have died in the Middle East, so far, because of Bush.
Mr. Obama has done a way better job of keeping us safe than almost any other four-year President, despite the right’s continued claims that he’s incompetent. And your rhetoric otherwise only serves to show how ill-informed you are.

Obama Invokes Executive Privilege on Fast and Furious. This means he is complicit in these murders, or he misused it for political gain.
In June, Obama misused his executive powers to grant amnesty to illegals and to stop them from being deported. This usurps congressional authority and is beyond the scope of powers set for the executive branch.
In the future Obama WILL misuse his executive powers to cover up what happened in Libya. We already know he lied, so he has no other choice to misuse his authority to avoid impeachment. The only reason I am not 100% against this is because Biden as President would be far worse than Obmalam.

re voting fraud. the biggest danger is the machines. i was very involved in florida, for 2 years, ’til we changed the machines AWAY from Diebold (who promised dubya his success in this state) and to optical scanners w/paper ballots and random checking. we learned how easy it was to simply walk by a diebold machine and w/a small remote, change the vote. we had many instances of voters pushing one button and consistently getting the other guy’s name on the screen w/the dibod machines. that’s where the main danger is. and the (mis)handling of absentee ballots, which is very common.

Hi, Robert – Couldn’t agree with you more… And, although Fox is the star player here, there are other “news sources’ who have some influence: primarily “talk radio.” The problem is that their “opinions” are never challenged within the context of their own programming. To me, a classic example of this was when the DNC decided to change the venue for its final evening, from an outdoor stadium to someplace inside. When asked by Bret Baier why he thought this had been done, the Krauthammer (a man I find very difficult to watch, I must say) replied, “Well, of course, they’ve known for months what the weather was going to be. They just didn’t want to show empty seats…” To which Baier replied, “Thanks, Charles…”
Now, of course, on a REAL “news program,” one might expect the “reporter” to express some modicum of surprise at being told that somehow the DNC had a truly miraculous weather forecaster, and might ask something like, “Really, Charles? How could they possibly have known that?”
An interviewer like Charlie Rose will ask a guest a question like, “How did you feel when your puppy disappeared?” Baier usually asks something more like, “So, when your puppy disappeared, didn’t you feel pretty certain that the liberals had stolen her to be part of one of their Satanic rituals that undermine the founding values of our country?” To which the “guest” will reply, “Well, of course, Bret, that was my first thought, since that kind of thing is happening so often all over the country these days…” Cut to commercial…
And that’s how it goes. And people think, because it is labeled “news,” it actually IS “news.” And we just can’t get enough “news,” and the advertisers know that, so their money goes to anything that can remotely be called “news,” no matter what it actually is. The advertisers rake in the bucks; the “news program” does everything it can to hang on to its ratings, which usually involves upping the melodrama and “controversy” to make even the most unimportant piece of trivia seem of world import; and the people watch and listen and “believe”…
And real harm is done… As always happens when people are urged to follow their fears, their prejudices, and their hatreds.

Thanks Sidney, I’ll check it out… I grew up in the midwest. Worked in a factory right out of high school (that factory was moved to Mexico about 10 years ago). It was at the factory that I became acquainted with the religious factions that are very prevalent in the midwest. I remember how mean they could be towards other co-workers.
Several of them tried to recruit me into their church. They saw the devil everywhere and many were convinced the end of the world was near. One of them eventually got me to go to their holy roller church. People would shout out hallelujah in the middle of the sermon. It was an Evangelical congregation. I was encouraged to go up to the altar to be saved. The preacher put his hands on my shoulders. shook me and said do you feel it son, do you feel it . After several attempts and my response was still no, he told to go back to my seat and maybe I would feel it there. Apparently I wasn’t as impressionable as some thought. Maybe it was my catholic upbringing that made me suspicious of this new experience.
I left the midwest when I was 20 and now live on the west coast in the most unchurched state in the USA, Oregon. I love it here, but the outlying areas are very conservative just like the rest of the country.

I think the single biggest reason this country is so divided can be laid on the doorstep of Fox News and the rightwing hate machine that proliferates the AM dial. The rightwing is epitomized by everything they claim the left is. They want the government to act as their own personal sledgehammer against every prejudice and fear they have and are willing to suffer as long as who they hate suffers more in their eyes. When government doesn’t act in that capacity for them, as they believe Obama’s form of government is doing, then they believe government is acting as a sledgehammer against them and their right to hold their prejudices and fears, that are most often based in ignorance and supremacy.
The rightwing mind is driven strictly by fear and prejudice about losing their right to believe as they do, regardless of facts that most often don’t support their views. We on the left are driven by fear too, fear that we will be the target of their wrath and for that reason they believe we are the haters. How do you find common ground in that scenario?

Senator McConnell’s statement did not surprise me at all. I had him pegged as one of those people that are always right. Even if an entire room full of people were saying something in unison and his is the only dissenting voice, his would be the right one, of course. He is not a positive person at all and really gives me the creeps.

At this time, I’m projecting the 2016 presidential ticket will be Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. With Chris Cristi as an alternate choice for either role. Depends who can project the more centrist appeal. Cristi has shown himself to be independent of the far right influences (Cristi will need to slim down though, his weight is at a very unhealthy level) It will be hard to beat any combination of those 3.
The only way the Democratic Party ticket can compete is for the 2016 candidate to learn Spanish and take on a likewise VP from the Latino community. I don’t know of any rising star in the Latino community that could run for president, but then again, I hadn’t heard of Obama before 2008. The Latino vote is gaining more and more importance in the elections. (The mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, is a possibility.)
Paul Ryan will continue to get attention, but not sure how relevant he will be beyond his own self aggrandizing.

I may be alone, but I didn’t find Mitt’s concession speech particularly gracious. It seemed flat and perfunctory, given in a grudging tone of voice. It’s not a particularly important point, but I am surprised by al the praise the speech received when I perceived it so differently. In any case, I’m glad I don’t have to think about him or look at him ever again.

The democrats can not make the mistake of thinking that the republican party has suddenly changed and “come to their senses. They haven’t. They can’t be trusted to behave rationally. Now that their agenda has been repudiated by the American people, Obama should be strong and not give too much up when making deals.
Can you imagine if Romney won? They would be shooting off fireworks and planning to destroy Medicare, Medicaid, SS, child labor laws, minimum wage laws, EPA dept. of education and outlawing abortion already. They would be parading In front of tv cameras boasting that THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN LOUD AND CLEAR.
The dems must watch over their shoulder so they can see the knife the repubs will be trying to stick in their back.

During the campaign, one of the newspapers stated, “Ryan is a rising star whether Romney wins or not”. I don’t think so!! It was quite evident with our President’s win that Americans don’t want more GOP stinkin’ lies and no more lines of BS. Why is it the republicans always say they have ‘rising stars’ like Eric Cantor or Marco Rubio? I see no star quality in any of them.
I also agree with whoever said that we need to keep a report card on those members of Congress who continue to obstruct – especially Mitch the Bitch.
Thank you Helen and Margaret for getting us through this extremey difficult campaign season – it lasted far too long.

I decided last night what I really needed to do was to take a break from all the news shows, so I went to my yoga class and stayed after for a lovely visit with my daughter and the yoga teacher. By the time I got in the car NPR was announcing a win for President Obama. Then I came home in time to watch the wrap up and the speeches. Like you, Helen, I was impressed with Romney’s concession speech. It was a bit short, but he said all the right things and didn’t whine or rant about anything.
And the President’s speech reminded me just why I’ve voted for him twice and how proud I am that he is our President. I also loved seeing his beautiful family and the Biden’s beautiful family together. Their respect and love for each other are genuine and most likely life-long. That hasn’t always been the case with Presidents and Vice Presidents.
And like you, Helen, all those good feelings that we might be on a path of actually getting some things done came to a screeching halt with sour puss McConnell. One of the commentators called his response grumpy and they pointed out that he has to run again and feels the need to stick to that hard right line or risk being primaried. I wonder if he will be anyway. People are pretty sick of that line of thought so we can hope that his voice will really be the minority opinion and he’ll be voted out next time round.
I’m ready to move forward and determined to remain hopeful.

Sad day for America. and just in case you want to know it has nothing to do with race, rape or gays. I am one happy Minnesotan today! I’m crying tears of joy over the defeat of Minnesota’s proposed voter/marriage restriction amendments. And we turned our whole state capitol blue. Now we can finally get some stuff done around here.
On the federal level… Although Graves has now conceded to Bachmann, she knows her days are numbered. She won by 1 measly percentage point. Even the people in her freakishly gerrymandered district are getting sick and tired of her nonsense. As for my district, we handily and happily returned the Anti-Bachmann, Keith Ellison, to Congress.
Add to that all the victories for equality in other states–Maine, Maryland, and Washington–and the defeats of theocratic, fact-challenged fools in so many congressional seats, and you’ve got a recipe for a heckuva good morning.

I heard this morning that Bob Scheaffer (sp?) said that Obama is going to have to find new and creative ways of working with Congress. Say what?! I think it’s time for Congress to start working with President Obama, not the other way around. Thank God that at least some of the crazies are gone: Alan West, Akin, Murdock, to name a few. And thank God for Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Baldwin, Tammy Duckworth, and Alan Grayson is back!!! In my own state of Colorado Dems regained control of the legislature, dug in their pockets to give more funding for public education and legalized marijuana. All these things are HUGE! Thank you everyone–especially the Floridians who stood in line long after President Obama was declared the winner to cast their vote. Democracy is messy, but it works when we stay involved. I am SO optimistic for the next 4 years! FORWARD!!!

Actually, that vote was just a kick the can up to the Feds to make the decision. I don’t think it will stand, legally. I have no opinion either way. My husband worked his ass off for 10 months with the Obama for Colorado campaign so I am thrilled for him. We live in the highly Republican suburbs south of the Denver metro area so it was awesome for us to see the support in this area for Obama.

Since the Repugnants made such a big deal over RAPE, I believe it’s time for all the women to grab this issue and make it ours. It’s time that law enforcement put rapists in jail. It’s time to test all of the DNA kits that are just sitting on shelves while the rapist continues to rape.
Rape could be dramatically reduced if we have the Political Will.
And with Obama still in the WH, women could put some pressure on him to reduce the number of rapes. We have this opportunity and I don’t want to waste it.

Many thanks to Nate Silver for his excellent analysis and forecasting abilities. As far as Mitch “the turtle head” McConnell, we need to think of a way to diminish his influence on the political system. It has to be at the grass roots level and something the media will find just as newsworthy as they find his commentaries.
Maybe it’s not so much the Mitch McConnell’s of the nation we need to change as much as it is the media that allows their far right ideology to go unquestioned.
The media is where much of our nations problems are created, because the MSM has been a dismal failure at standing up to abusive power for fear of losing access.
The media and the banks need to be broken up into smaller, more competitive entities. Consolidation has not been a good thing for the consumer or our nation.

It behooves us all to avoid gloating at this moment. In the final analysis, this nation needs to heal itself and come together around what we all have in common. There will continue to be disagreements about how to achieve the future that we all hope for; however, the extremes on both sides of the ideological spectrum cannot be the ones to dictate that. In order to break the dead-lock, some compromises will be essential. Let’s all keep cool heads, open hearts and shared commitment toward that goal.
Our success as a nation has always been strengthened and elevated when we can agree to disagree in a civilized fashion — and then get about the business of negotiation and settling upon pursuing “the greatest good for the greatest number”. Many years ago my mother, a stanch Democrat, had a card, which I recently found and posted on my blog. http://www.conservativechristianwatchdog.org I thought it quite fitting for today and aligns with Helen’s title for this blog.
It will be interesting to see what the Conservative Christians say on Sunday. I imagine the “devil’ will be given all the credit for his candidate losing. After all, Romney’s church say the “worship the god of this earth.”
I also imagine the “Conservative Christians” will blame God for the Hurricane that helped elect Obama. They pray for God’s will and then complain when He answers.
Actually, they need to understand that God only cares about individuals and not real estate.

My son (he voted too, y’all!) texted me last nite when CBS called it for PBO “breathe easier, 4 more years.” I surely will! I understand Mr Romneys best speech of the whole campaign was his concession speech…
