Mitt without a war is like a Kardashian without a sex tape… Not gonna happen

HELEN:

Margaret, I watched the debate and then I went to bed comforted by the fact that Barack Obama would be President for four more years. I dreamt of a Supreme Court that actually believes all Americans are created equal and corporations are entities not people. In my dream, we looked for ways to increase voter turnout and not suppress it. And then I woke up and made the mistake of turning on cable news. Evidently Obama had won the debate, but Romney had proven himself presidential. Really? The guy with the sweaty upper lip and the mood swings that matched his policy swings? That guy was presidential? Did anybody actually watch the debate with the sound on?

You could almost hear Romney’s heart break when he announced that we can’t “kill our way out of this”. As badly as he wants to start a few, there would be no wars for Romney. And a Republican without a war is like Sarah Palin without her early pregnancy test strip – a little scared and a lot in denial. It was hard for him, but even Romney realized that a debate about foreign policy really should focus at least a little bit on diplomacy and world peace. His fight with Russia, Iran, China, Egypt, Syria, and some place called Mali would all have to wait until after he got elected. Bush spoiled America’s appetite for preemptive wars and Romney looked like he was about to cry. In an attempt to mislead undecided voters, he even had to give up on his desire for a continued war in Afghanistan. Bless his heart, he had held on to that one until the bitter end.

Romney has been campaigning to become President for seven years. In that time, we have learned very little about the man except that he is damn good at telling people what they want to hear. He governed in Massachusetts, but even they don’t want him anymore. In this last debate, he finally admitted that people wanted to hear the truth. And the truth of the matter is, Romney thinks Obama really isn’t that bad. Yes, Mr. Romney, you weren’t going to be able to lie your way out of this one.

I’ve grown tired of pointing out that Romney is a liar. It took me awhile to put pen to paper on this one because I really didn’t want to just make another list of all his lies and flip-flops. Eventually I decided to go the other way – the truth about Obama. Here is why I am voting for a second term for Barack Obama. Pay attention because if you have been watching Fox News and buying the Republican bullshit you might not know some of this…

  • The federal government has gotten smaller, not bigger, under President Barack Obama. We now have fewer federal employees than we did in 2009.
  • Government spending under President Obama has been smaller than the previous nine presidents. That goes back all the way to Eisenhower, and I am pretty sure all of the savings haven’t come from a smaller navy. Those aircraft carriers are pretty damn expensive.
  • Obama’s healthcare plan will save money and provide insurance for more Americans including millions of children.
  • It is now the law of the land that women get equal pay for equal work. I still can’t believe it took until 2009 for that to happen.
  • We no longer humiliate our brave soldiers because of who they love. Despite what we were told, that change didn’t weaken our military. But now that it’s done the odds of a Romney one day serving have increased to one in ten.
  • Obama has actually put in place fewer regulations on businesses than George Bush did in his first term. Fewer regulations under Obama. I bet that’s a surprise. It appears that Mitt Romney, Donald Trump and the Koch Brothers can remain fabulously wealthy even if Obama remains President.
  • We are now drilling more and producing more domestic oil than before. Even though Mitt seems to think every private citizen has an oil well in their garden, much of the increase has indeed been on public lands not just on private lands. Obama finally told oil companies to shit or get off the pot.
  • President Obama has actually lowered taxes. He retained the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and has lowered taxes for the middle class as well. Don’t believe me? Romney’s tax rate is 33% lower than the percentage of Americans who are victims. (47-33=14)
  • And while I am pretty sure Romney already knows this, China owns actually less than 10% of our national debt and almost any economic professor will tell you that’s actually a good thing.

Well, will you listen to me? I sound like one of those weekend news shows on PBS –factually more accurate but not nearly as entertaining as Bill O’Reilly. I hope I didn’t bore you too much.

My point is this. One candidate is talking about our future – green energy, improved schools, better roads and bridges, sustainable job and pay growth, diplomacy, allies around the world… The other candidate (the Republican) keeps going on and on about missile defense in Poland, war with Russia, mining for coal and the 1916 Navy. Somewhere, anywhere there is a wall that Romney is desperate to tear down. Poor dear. He’s about 25 years too late and Putin is no Gorbachev.

Too bad we don’t have Sarah Palin this year. She wore her crazy on her sleeve, but Romney is actually pretty good at misleading voters. Don’t let him mislead you. He may look Presidential while he is lying, but do we really want to make this about looks? If we did that we would have to include the wives and Michelle Obama is a knock out.

We have a President who cares about all 100% of us. And he’s good looking to boot. Let’s keep him. I mean it. Really.

MARGARET:

My nephew says to tell you that you are beating a dead horse with Palin. He says the line should be A Republican without a war is like a Kardashian without a sex tape. Maybe you can ask Matthew not to attach my name and picture to that one. Two more weeks, dear. Two more weeks and we can go back to working on the cookbook. Oh, and Helen, you heard it here first – Trump is an asshat.

Thanks for putting something with real chops on the site. For whatever reason, trolls (and I do think they are mindless machines just churning out fragmented sentences) have “decided” to destroy this site… May happen; may not.

Maybe, at some point, there was a Margaret and Helen, and a Matthew… And now there may be, or may not be. We just cannot know, can we? Whether they were real or not, they gave us this platform. And some of us are still here, and some have gone elsewhere, and so be it.

    I thank you…

I just came across this today and want to share it. Check this out:

“Harvesting’ Companies: Another Video of Mitt Showing The Real ‘Mr. Profit’ Romney”

There ya go. In his own words in 1985, Romney explains his successful business strategy that pocketed him hundreds of millions of dollars in ill-gotten profits over the years, including at Bain Capital:

“Bain Capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in start-up companies and ongoing companies….then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully, five to eight years later, to harvest them at a significant profit…”

“to harvest them”…. Yeah, it’s just business, ya know….. He’s contemptuous, callous, and condescending in his “harvesting profits”. He blandly explains how he and Bain maximized profits (cutting benefits, firing loyal employees, shutting down the companies, throwing the workers to the wolves) with the overriding intention simply to return money to the investors, as he and others became millionaires in the process. It’s just business, ya know…. people’s lives aren’t important in any of that…. loyal workers, their pensions, their financial futures aren’t important…. it’s all about profits to the investors.

Romney has NOTHING to do with “creating jobs”!

  20. Hi Congenial Gang,

Yeah, it was about time for Trump to trot out and to put in an appearance, bringing the other “birthers” crawling out from under their rocks in a last ditch desperate effort to scrape the bottom of their bag of tricks to discredit President Obama.

Got another fascinating book to recommend to you. It is “DNA USA – A Genetic Portrait of America” by Bryan Sykes. He is a British Geneticist and author of a number of books including “The Seven Daughters of Eve.” It does get technical of course but it is not at all pedantic. It is actually quite entertaining and readable as he and his son and later, his wife travel across the U.S. taking saliva swab samples of DNA. It is a delightful account of many of the people he met. For any of you genealogy buffs, it is a MUST READ!

There are a few surprising results. In many ways, DNA obliterates the common definition of race. When it comes to racial and ethnic issues, there has been plenty of hanky panky and fraternizing with the “enemy”. It sorta reminds me of the days when I dyed my hair for 25 years to try to maintain the illusion of my image as the ravishing brunette of my youth. Who was I trying to fool? I was only kidding myself! The hair color product I used had a TV commercial that went, “Only her hairdresser knows for sure!” So when it comes to lineage all the way back to Eve, “Only my geneticist knows for sure!”

Sykes concluding paragraph in the book merits being quoted in its entirety verbatim:

“As you leave the gallery my hope is that you will come away with the feeling that you have glimpsed another world. A world that mocks the artificial divisions we have created for ourselves. A world made up of the corpuscles of DNA that each of us has inherited over millennia from our myriad ancestors, every one of them a resourceful survivor from earlier times. We are their privileged custodians in this world for a few short years, messengers through time to generations not yet born. Let us enjoy this honor while we may.”

Aloha! 🙂 Namaste. Shalom. Saalam. Peace.

  21. Finally have a working VCR so pulled out an old movie – Thirteen Days. I realize it is fact and fiction. I lived in West Palm Beach at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was 20 more interested in whether I had a date for Saturday night and what to wear then I was in world affairs. But the tension and anxiety among the adults was noticeable and a extremely stressful time. There were military convoys clogging the roads, supply trains passing and aircraft touching down at the old air force base.

It was a bit of time before I realized this is the exact time but 50 years later. If it were to happen today which man would I want making the decisions Obama or Romney? I am not totally sure how Obama would have handled it. But I believe Romney would have allowed the military to have their way and the world would be a very, very, very different place today. Scary!

  22. uaw, I watched that video. Who are these supposed people that say they’re going to riot if Obama isn’t re-elected? I’ve heard this before on coast to coast radio (some reicht winger guest was hyping it up), but would really like to know who is really behind this rumored event. don’t accept that there’s some organized effort out there promoting such an event, at least not coming from the left. I think this is something some republican front group is cooking up. I could see the right creating a scenario like this, very easily, and then blaming the liberals or some group they will try and affiliate with the Democratic party. I think this kind of rumor needs to be squelched before those who are promoting it get a self fulfilling prophecy, even if they have to be the ones doing the rioting. I hope the FBI is investigating these claims coming from the republicans, because the only people I’ve heard such things coming from, are those republican hacks promoting it.

It’s so refreshing to see all his accomplishments and to have hope that he will be given a chance to finish the job we elected him to do four years ago. We will need more Democrats in Congress to enable him to do that. What a litany of what I feel in my soul is absolute truth. Others I know from the Commonwealth (“God Save It”, as Charlie Pierce always adds) have said much the same.

I think the man (Romney) has no grasp of any reality other than what he’s been called upon to do by his Church and his handlers. I don’t know the guy, and I tend to do my best to see some common humanity between myself and virtually every other human being on this planet. (Still having a little trouble with Cheney and Rove, though, gotta admit…)

Do whatever you can to get people (okay: Obama supporters) out and voting. This is the most important thing we can do… Your summary was galvanizing. Thanks so much.

  34. I lived in Mass during the Romney administration and I remember more news about failures than successes. His interpretations of his alleged successes during the recent debate with President Obama are outright fraud. Here are some real facts.

He bragged about balancing the budget. What he didn’t say is that in Massachusetts, like many other states, it’s the law that the budget must be balanced. His claim about not raising taxes is even more sanctimonious because instead of raising taxes he used his emergency powers and raised or attached new fees for just about every enterprise in the state. Simultaneously, drastic cuts to state aid to cities and towns required imposition of new local taxes and substantial personnel layoffs by communities in order to make ends meet.

His claim to ownership of the health care law that eventually evolved into “Obamacare” is a lame joke. His battles with the 85% Democratic majority (his “reaching across the aisle”) was fraught with veto after veto. It passed only after countless overrides of his vetoes, plus an endorsement by Ted Kennedy, plus significant later amendments in 1908 and 1910 to make it work.

He grabbed credit for the excellence of higher education in Massachusetts, but had little to do with it. In fact, the state made drastic cuts during his tenure. Lack of support was balanced by higher miscellaneous fees that drove costs out of sight. In fact, tuition at state colleges was the lesser part of the overall cost. During his governorship, support for higher education was among the worst in the nation!

Attempts to take credit for the excellence of Massachusetts secondary schools, by implying that it was his leadership, is a flop. The truth is that the secondary-school reforms were well underway years before he became governor and he really had nothing to do with them.

His “binder full of women” is also hot air. During the campaign, a bipartisan group of women assembled the binder of women’s names that he tries to take credit for. It was brought to him and his opponent during the campaign by the group of women voters that wanted both candidates to consider those in the binder for possible appointments whichever candidate was elected. I don’t recall any of those women ever being considered for a position of substance.

He didn’t run for a second term as governor because his dismal 32% voter approval suggested a rousing defeat. Some predicted he’d do about as well as a third party candidate. Also. Residents were unhappy that he bailed out leaving a minimally qualified Lt Gov in charge to clean up his messes while he lived the high life elsewhere.

More sordid details can be found by googling his “accomplishments”

  60. My impression is that Mitt is pulling around a Trojan Horse painted with the lies of moderation. If he should win the election our tears will wash away the lies and we will be overcome by the conservative a$$holes hiding inside that financed the building of the horse. Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Koch brothers, Adelson, there are too many to name. I am so ready for this circus to be over and hope that the circus tent will collapse on that Trojan horse (not to be confused with the dancing horse on the elevator).

  62. M & H, really enjoy your blog. Actually, if we’re going to go on looks, both couple candidates are very handsome. I (an Independent) will vote Obama this election because:

    1. He has done moderately OK in this dismal world economy and deserves the chance to let his policies mature. Though I strongly disagree on this administration’s drone and civil liberties policies. I really thought (and wanted) us to back off the direction we’re going in. We should be the example of correctness in the International Law area, not the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ example.
    2. With the far right leanings of the Republican party right now, I think it would be a mistake to let them take the reins at this point, especially with anticipated Supreme Court nominations coming up.

  63. Helen, right on as usual. You knocked it out of the park, again. Margaret, I always love it when you respond. And, the Tea Party can’t suppress you like they have the mainstream media. Everyone should print out this post and keep it in their purse or pocket or wherever because your info on what Obama has done is easy to understand and has already been fact checked to be true. I have sent the link to your blog to everyone I know.

Romney presidential……….my aunt fanny !!! This dumb d-bag doesn’t even know that Iran has a coastline. Syria is not its’ pathway to the sea. What a moron. And why do you think he wants to give the military 30 billion dollars for more boats or whatever nonsense he was talking about when the pentagon has been very clear that they don’t want or need it………….THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX……..the contractors one of which is Paul Ryan’s family……..shades of Dick Cheney and Iraq. A military contract is awarded to a company, it is not bid on. Therefore the contractor can charge whatever he wants to do the job. These contractors are the billionaires who are funding this crooked campaign.

A little shout out to Ann Romney…….you dumb ass, your rude, disrespectful brats going out on a mission is NOT like serving in the military. Your brats serve THE MORMON CHURCH to propogate your religion. There are many ways to serve this country but a Mormon Mission is NOT one of them. How stupid are you? Your spawn are not in danger of being killed or maimed or mentally injured. The only thing they have to worry about is getting hemorrhoids from riding those bicycles.

I have no respect for any woman or her husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather who is going to vote for this radical Tea Party Romney, nor do I have any respect for women who are still undecided. A vote for Tea Party Romney is a vote against women, children, Seniors, veterans, free speech, and civil rights.

And, just to leave you a little tidbit of info you will not get from the suppressed mainstream media: The Romney Family has just purchased
voting machines in Ohio…………Bush and the 2000 election hanging chad debacle all over again.

Democrats get out and vote early if your state has early voting, if you have mail in ballots get them handled and WALK them into a drop off place. These Tea Party people are not above tampering with the mail. Check with neighbors and friends to make sure they can get to the polls, make sure you have an ID with you. Call your state’s Democratic headquarters if you have questions or problems. There are still more registered Democrats in this country than there are Baggers. Do your part. Money and lies should not buy a Presidency.

Isn’t that what you call an oxymoron? I pray that I’m happy two weeks from now. I don’t want another ‘Theft’ in Ohio or the Supreme Court calling the shots. Everyone for Obama: GET OUT AND VOTE!!

Today’s blog entry needs to be printed and mailed to every voter in the country. It summarizes nicely why we need to re-elect President Obama and why Romney needs to return to one of his houses and think about WHY he lost. Good job!
