Margaret, I am aware that some people may call me a single issue voter. Not true. What is true is that the Republicans have become a single issue party.
What Akin actually said was, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” And then in his apology he stated, “I made that statement in error. Rape is never legitimate. It is an evil act.”
There are just so many things wrong with that statement that I don’t even know where to begin. I do know, however, that my legitimate foot is going to meet a certain illegitimate ass if I ever run into this Akin fella.
Rape is never legitimate? So that means that rape is illegitimate? And I guess illegitimate rape is when the woman enjoys the attack so much that she gets pregnant? Even in his apology there is no awareness of the real issue. He gives absolutely no thought to the woman – just the man and the “child”? And where does Akin get his opinion on the reproductive system of a woman, or as he calls it “that whole thing”. Clearly he’s a few credits shy of being a gynecologist, but he does have a degree in management engineering. I guess on the weekends, he manages to hang out with doctors and discuss how that whole female reproductive system thing has been engineered to protect itself against rape. Honestly, Margaret, where do they find these asshats? Is it just me, or is there a different Republican each week with his head up my whole thing? What exactly are they looking for up there – a tax refund?
Of course today Republicans everywhere are backtracking from Akin’s whole thing faster than a cockroach when the light comes on. And speaking of a cockroach, Sarah Palin should be coming out of the shadows pretty soon to voice her support of Akin because even women in the Republican party don’t seem to have compassion for the rape victim. Somewhere in Arizona, John McCain is chewing on an aspirin, remembering when the wheels came off a certain Straight Talk Express.
Well Romney and Ryan can run away from Akin all they want, but the fact remains that the current platform held by the Republican Party calls for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. It also says the Republican Party supports a “human life amendment” to the Constitution. Akin was simply reading from the talking points.
As far as I can see, today’s Republican Party is about as useful to women as a jockstrap. So I suggest we all put on our big girl panties and head to the voting booth this November because my whole thing has legitimate concerns about electing Republicans. I mean it. Really.

I cannot believe we are having to fight over this again 40 years after Roe v. Wade. When I had my daughter 19 years ago, I was so happy I was bringing her into a world of advancement for women and all this bs was behind us. I am glad to say she’ll be joining me this time

So I recently got into a little Twitter tiff with the conservative owner of “Life News”, a horrific prolife website that uses the usual tactics of lies and misinformation, and let me tell you, I was appalled at how immature this was– Steven Ertelt– was. Again — dear people on the porch — I say that this country should try to do elections like the Brits: six weeks and thats it! After viewing the GOP convention, stolen right out from under them at the last minute by Eastwood, it should be screamingly obvious that the procedure should be greatly tweaked. What they didn’t get was that the empty chair bit is used by every drama coach past and present. After last night, probably not in the future. What the bleep did Mitt’s handlers expect? Eastwood has a truckload of awards and with his background of umpty-ump films, he is more ingrained into the American psyche than Romney ever will be. And Eastwood knows this! Hence the chutzpah of throwing away the script in front of a nationally televised audience. But Romney and his handlers never had a clue that this sort of thing could happen! Tells yah sumthin, doesn’t it.

So what was Clint Eastwood smokin’ tonight? Or is it Alzheimer’s? Drunk? I guess I haven’t seen him in a long time. I used to like him. Would have expected him to be more respectful of the presidency than that. Acting as if Obama is in the imaginary chair spewing curse words was not cool. Romney’s speech writers really must have put in some long hours getting him to act like a real person who cares about women, children and the middle class. Ann R. still looks like she’s a mean, mad person to me. However, it’s been proven over and over again that taxes have to be raised in wartime or else the economy tumbles (like in the Bush years) and yet, this is exactly what Romney wants to do — go to war with Iran while cutting taxes. What’s HE smokin?

Hi, back, Easier – Here, too, I have to keep asking my geeky friends (thank goodness I have a few) what these various initial things mean. LMFAO took me a while.
This is a great site. M&H have the courage to put stuff out, and then let us all do our things. Happy to say that I had a WONDERFUL “Ladies Night” tonight, here in my small Community. Fourteen really interesting and thoughtful women, sitting around a couple of picnic tables, and talking about a lot of important things. I told everyone there about M&H, and urged them to join in the discussion. I think we’ll have some new additional voices coming soon.
At our best, we are thoughtful, intelligent, and compassionate. At our worst, we are petty, combative, and frightened.
Please remember to work local where you can. Discussion is great; registering voters is probably the most important thing.

As for the ads – Yes, all the big oil and energy companies (who make me nauseous touting their “greenness” and their reliance on “the power of human energy”), and every pharmaceutical you can think of, particularly for allergies (where the “side effects” are listed as “congestion, runny nose, difficulty breathing” and so on) and, of course, plenty of products for combatting the dreaded “erectile dysfunction”…
I can’t remember the last time I saw an ad for any form of birth control, however…

Yep, they are incredibly ugly – and the amazing thing is that the people who have them seem to love either love them for their weirdness, or not care at all. The other thing that struck me about France, in addition to its very good public transportation systems, is the fact that all the big national highways have three lanes, each dedicated to a particular “speed zone”. If you are driving an ancient truck overloaded with bales of hay, you drive in the right hand lane; if you’re in an “average” car, you drive in the middle lane; and, if you’ve got a slick Ferrari, BMW, or Lamborghini, you can pretty much go as fast as you like in the left-hand lane.
The amazing thing is that everybody seems quite content to drive in the appropriate lane, and nobody minds being passed on the highway. You NEVER see some lumbering pickup in the fast lane refusing to pull over for the head-light flashing Lamborghini on his tail. They seem to really understand that different people do things differently, for whatever reason, and those differences are accommodated, by public facilities, and seem to be accepted by almost everyone. (Of course, it’s safer, as well, because you don’t have the fast drivers cutting in and out of all three lanes…)
It’s that acceptance and provision-making that I found so impressive.
(And nobody needs to bother reminding me of all the things that are “wrong” with this or that European country; I’m well aware there’s plenty of pettiness and racism and graft and greed and all kinds of stuff, as well… Just like here.)

Hi, Cynthia – I agree with your understanding that most “news” programming is now just one component of a larger “media empire” and, like all components, is required to bring in revenue for its owners and shareholders. To do that, of course, they have to have advertisers to pay for it, and the larger their audience, the more money they can demand from their advertisers. And, to get people to watch, they are compelled to be as melodramatic as possible all the time. The more controversy or outrage, the “better”; we all get a big adrenalin rush watching people yell at and argue with, each other, no matter what they are actually saying. They can be talking about thousands of people being slaughtered in the Sudan, or a hamster seen running across Kim Kardashian’s front yard – both are presented with equal drama. And the “drama” is what grabs us – not the “news” itself. (I’m pretty sure I’m just agreeing with you, and not telling you anything you don’t already know! Just adding my voice…)
The second thing I find troublesome is that “opinion” is no longer separated from “fact”. In classic news programming, people (then called “commentators”, not “pundits”) often presented their opinions about something that was happening, but it was very clear that it was an “opinion” ABOUT some piece of news, not “news” in and of itself. Blurring this distinction allows the programs to be even more melodramatic, more of the time. All the broadcast media seem to do this – although I certainly find of them more blatant and excessive than others – and the web tries to do it as much as possible, too. My browser home page is always cluttered up with things bouncing around and flashing and so on… All of which must be gotten rid of before I can actually find anything.)
So this means that an hour long “news” program usually consists of five to ten minutes – maybe – of actual “news”… Surrounded by fifty minutes of arguing, yelling, and carrying on… And people will think that someone’s “opinion” is actually “true”, just because someone said it – and then they pass it on as truth, and somebody else believes it, and so on and so on…
I am not exempting myself from having done this! Like everyone, there are some people whose opinions I like and trust, and some I don’t. But when someone presents his or her opinion – or someone else’s – as a “fact”, I object.
I frequently get (melodramatic) emails from my brother-in-law that start out with something like, “READ THIS IF YOU CARE AT ALL ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!” And then what is attached, presented with all kinds of references and footnotes, turns out to be a word-for-word repetition of some pundit’s opinion about something that is totally untrue and was resurrected from some radio talk show originally aired in 2004…
Good for you for not watching TV! I’m impressed.

Gato, I agree with your post. “Socialist” Europe understood early that tending to the greater good helps a greater number of people. The public transportation system in Europe serves populations well. It is also not wasteful. Here, It is so limiting, once away from big cities like New York, Washington, or Chicago, etc., to get anything done without private transportation. This really impacts the poor in smaller communities.
Your speaking of the Deux Chevaux (2CV) brought back fond memories. I saw one the other day on the streets of America, one with a Canadian license plate and I became very excited at the sight. A car from times past! The 2CV did get you from point a to point b without froufrou. But boy, were they ugly!

As I understand it – 5 or 6 corporations control all the media. There was a time when the news department was completely separate from the entertainment section on tv. The news section did not make money; it was only to report the news based on facts. Had to do with the rules for a broadcasting lisence. But that has changed and now it is all about ratings and money. I see it the other way and we are both right. They are just playing a game with us. (don’t have tv any more). Anyone – feel free to add or correct.

Hi, Skyler – You bring up a very interesting point. We, in the good ol’ US of A, live in what we call a “capitalist democracy”… And that’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. The President doesn’t have much say at all about gas prices – that’s up to “the market”, which seems to have its own rules and goals… And those rules and goals are all about profit – for them, and their shareholders.
The most any President can do is to suggest policies that might offer alternatives to paying high prices for auto fuel. That might be anything from an expanded public transportation system, to alternative energy sources, to finding ways that we don’t have to pump so many gallons of fossil fuels into our tanks. And then the Congress would have to agree to those suggestions. Not much of that happening around here these days!
I have been fortunate to spend some time in Europe, mainly England and France. When people there want to go somewhere, they get on a train. The trains, and all the other public transportation systems, are clean, convenient, and inexpensive. Gasoline is considered a luxury item, always has been, and it’s incredibly expensive there, from an American’s point of view. Those who have cars, often have very small ones. They can fit five people into a Deux Chevaux. And they don’t seem to mind. Their cities are also set up so that, if you live in one of them, you can easily WALK from your home to your place of work, or to your children’s school, and back, maybe stopping on the way home at four or five small, family-owned businesses, to pick up some vegetables here, some fresh-baked bread there, and dessert pastries at a third place.
Now… HTG, I know I’m going to get all the anti-American slams here. I just think that, were we given some better alternatives, we would be smart enough to take them.
As long as private corporations are making tons of money for their shareholders by not offering those alternatives, we won’t have them.
Disclosure: I’m three years into retirement, and most of my money is in the stock market, in a variety of its permutations. This doesn’t make me happy, morally, but it seems to be the only game in town. And it allows me to send some cash to causes in which I believe.

Well,I’m an American currently living in Canada, and I just paid more than 4.09/gallon for gas here today. Is that Obama’s fault too? And is it even the President’s fault when gas prices go up? When Bush was in office, I remember being told that gas prices had nothing to do with who was president, so I’m just curious.

Agree with much of what you have said and will add. The written word is too easily misunderstood. We come with a different set of facts and figures on the issues. We both lack truly creditable sources of truth and facts. Obama is not perfect nor is he the worse president ever….that would be Millard Fillmore. Both parties and their politicians have been corrupted by money and by people and corporations who have their own agendas. The poor and the middle class are not a part of their agendas. They have fed us lies and have us fighting among ourselves to the point we don’t realize they are robbing the treasury and destroying democracy. So we choose a side we believe or trust to be the right choice. But we won’t be around to see if we chose correctly but our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will have to live with it. 99% of the conservatives who come here don’t come to talk. They lead with insults and put downs – fighting words. I don’t blame you for everything; it takes two to start an argument. I share your concerns and fears however, I fear the Republicans more than the Democrats. If we don’t do something about the environment none of this will matter. If we (R&Ds) were ever to stop fighting and actually talk to each other I believe we would find we have more in common then we realize.

Hi, Cynthia – I wanted to remark to UAW a bit ago (but somehow wasn’t able to post it) that I am really impressed with the fact that he never disappoints! It takes a lot of creativity to point out the “obvious” connection between the physical signs of a vitamin deficiency and a specific political position. Gotta hand it to him. Great energy and dedication there!
Just don’t talk about vitamins or nutrition (or even your horse), Woman, lest you be immediately censured as a… You know, that epithet that starts with an “A”.
And, yes, UAW, I’m guilty of snarking, and not for the first time. Probably won’t be the last time, either, darn it. Already said that. Live with it. Or do whatever you want, as ever!

1. My second comment is out of sync. it should have followed the long comment.
2. There are a number of explanations for the term “red neck” and we are both correct. – as I stated in the PS of my comment. I was surprised to learn there was a medical explanation for it.
3. I simply confirmed and corrected it was Niacin not Selenium.
4. Comments about my mare are fact and it truly amazes me..
5. This is a liberal leaning blog; we are not inclined to praise the conservatives.
6. As the only conservative left on this blog you are getting a lot of flack. I don’t really agree with them or you. We all get to fighting and everyone goes to a corner, sulks and nothing gets done.
7. In fact you do nothing but slam liberals, Obama, Democrats etc. And IMO much of your information is questionable as to the facts,. So you do the same thing you accuse me/us of doing. Could say more but another day.

Cynthia, No I had not heard that story. Thanks for sharing it. When I was working in retail I realized first hand why unions are so important. A fellow worker had a run in with a customer, the worker was right but she was chastised by corporate headquarters. The letter that came to our store was a classic. I wish I had had the means to copy it but I do remember the line that stated their stand: “The customer is always right; even when the customer is wrong, the customer is right.”
We could be cheated by unscrupulous customers and have to take it. The bottom line, however, is that it reinforces bad behavior and we, as honest customers, pay for it in the long run since the company isn’t going to just “eat the loss” any more than they do when someone shoplifts. – Terry

I am loving your columns recently, ladies.
I live in Missouri now, and in total honesty, I was a sorority sister of Sen. Claire McCaskill. And I will support her. No, I’m not a Democrat or a Republican — my voting record of almost 40 years is pretty well split between the two.
I’m also a rape victim, of a stranger who broke into my home and almost strangled me. (Decades ago. I’ve over it.) So I’m not overly fond of Todd Akin’s rather assinine assertions. Luckily for me, pregnancy wasn’t a factor.
I’m pro-choice, because like Helen, I don’t believe the government belongs in my who-ha anymore than it belongs in your throbbing manhood.
I* personally wouldn’t choose abortion — although who knows what I would have done if it had been a result of the rape. Because of my personal experience with having to face that choice, I will defend to my death a woman’s right to chose for herself and I will not judge that decision. That’s God’s job, not mine.
However, I have to admit admiration for Rep. Akin’s decision to stay in the race. He’s standing behind his principles. I don’t necessarily agree with most of those, but I will defend to my death his right to have them. To me, that’s the beauty of America.
The most offensive thing the GOP committed in its reaction to the flap was to pressure a candidate, who FAIRLY won a three-way primary race, to quit. (Those who voted for him knew where he stood; he’s made no secret of the fact he doesn’t believe in abortion for any reason. And he was the darkhorse in the primary.).
So now every time a candidate makes a bone-headed comment, their parties are going to to make them quit and then appoint THEIR preferred candidate, circumventing the electorate? Seriously?
First, corporations can now be “people” in order to contibute to and influence elections. And now party officials think they can decide who we vote for if theydon’t think the guy we elected can win?
Seriously?
You want to find people who are waging war on the American electorate, look no further than the party bigwigs and the corporations. They don’t WANT your piddly little single vote to count unless it’s for them.
This is really the takeaway from the Akin flap — I’d love to see the mainstream media actually bring this up.

HI, Terri, and Beth – Thanks for the support. When I read somebody’s smart-mouth comments here (usually also repetitive, hostile, aggressive, and often misinformed), my first reaction is to reply in an equally smart-mouth fashion. And I can be pretty good at that, I like to think. I get a big adrenalin rush… And then, shortly after having done it, I am pretty convinced that, as you say, what I just posted was pretty useless as far as gaining any insight is concerned, however much I might have enjoyed doing it. (And I’m sure that my saying “pretty useless” will very likely be thrown back in my face within twenty minutes!) That’s not gonna kill me, or even bother me much…
I just thought this time I’d listen to some of my better angels, and try a less combative approach. The result was interesting: After five or six rapid-fire posts actually offering some of the “common ground” I’d hoped to find, the poster concluded that, nevertheless, he thought my post was “asshat”. If so, I wondered why he bothered to reply at all, let alone multiple times.
And then I recalled something that a psychologist said we should always remember about toddlers: A child would prefer to be praised, than to be scolded, but prefers being scolded to being ignored. That’s why “shunning”, as practiced by some religious groups, is such a powerful and dreaded punishment, simple as it is. And, obviously, that’s why a lot of people blog!

I heard another explanation for the term “red neck” from a doctor. A deficiency the vitamin B3 or Niacin will cause the neck to turn red. A poor diet along with food grown in Niacin poor soil is the problem. Many places especially in the south the soil was niacin deficient.

This weekend marks the anniversary of the most brutal confrontation in the history of the American labor movement, the Battle of Blair Mountain. For one week during 1921, armed, striking coal miners battled scabs, a private militia, police officers and the US Army. 100 people died, 1,000 were arrested, and one million shots were fired. It was the largest armed rebellion in America since the Civil War.
This how it happened. In the Twenties, West Virginia coal miners lived in “company towns.” The mining companies owned all the property. They literally ran union organizers out of town – or killed them.
In 1912, in a strike at Paint Creek, the mining company forced the striking miners and their families out of their homes, to live in tents. Then they sent armed goons into that tent city, and opened fire on men, women and children there with a machine gun.
By 1920, the United Mine Workers had organized the northern mines in West Virginia, but they were barred from the southern mines. When southern miners tried to join the union, they were fired and evicted. To show who was boss, one mining company tried to place machine guns on the roofs of buildings in town.
In Matewan, when the coal company goons came to town to take it upon themselves to enforce eviction notices, the mayor and the sheriff asked them to leave. The goons refused. Incredibly, the goons tried to arrest the sheriff, Sheriff Hatfield. Shots were fired, and the mayor and nine others were killed. But the company goons had to flee.
The government sided with the coal companies, and put Sheriff Hatfield on trial for murder. The jury acquitted him. Then they put the sheriff on trial for supposedly dynamiting a non-union mine. As the sheriff walked up the courthouse steps to stand trial again, unarmed, company goons shot him in cold blood. In front of his wife.
This led to open confrontations between miners on one hand, and police and company goons on the other. 13,000 armed miners assembled, and marched on the southern mines in Logan and Mingo Counties. They confronted a private militia of 2,000, hired by the coal companies.
President Harding was informed. He threatened to send in troops and even bombers to break the union. Many miners turned back, but then company goons started killing unarmed union men, and some armed miners pushed on. The militia attacked armed miners, and the coal companies hired airplanes to drop bombs on them. The US Army Air Force, as it was known then, observed the miners’ positions from overhead, and passed that information on to the coal companies.
The miners actually broke through the militia’s defensive perimeter, but after five days, the US Army intervened, and the miners stood down. By that time, 100 people were dead. Almost a thousand miners then were indicted for murder and treason. No one on the side of the coal companies was ever held accountable.
The Battle of Blair Mountain showed that the miners could not defeat the coal companies and the government in battle. But then something interesting happened: the miners defeated the coal companies and the government at the ballot box. In 1925, convicted miners were paroled. In 1932, Democrats won both the State House and the White House. In 1935, President Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act. Eleven years after the Battle of Blair Mountain, the United Mine Workers organized the southern coal fields in West Virginia.
The Battle of Blair Mountain did not have a happy ending for Sheriff Hatfield, or his wife, or the 100 men, women and children who died, or the hundreds who were injured, or the thousands who lost their jobs. But it did have a happy ending for the right to organize, and the middle class, and America.
Now let me ask you one thing: had you ever heard of this landmark event in American history, the Battle of Blair Mountain, before you read this? And if not, then why not? Think about that.

Maybe it’s Sunday evening; maybe I’m trying to practice compassion. I truly hope that, on my part, it’s the latter. Troubled people should never be dismissed, annoying as they might be, and much as we might like to dismiss them.
I love talking to like-minded sisters, and I’m grateful to Margaret and Helen, and Matthew, for inviting us to do so. And I also know that the more important thing is to acknowledge the legitimacy of those who don’t agree with me. I assume their concerns are real, however well, or annoyingly, they may express them.

He tells you, “That’s private.” You ask him to tell you what sort of life he sees the two of you having together. He soon makes it very clear that he really feels that it is not really your place to be asking him all these questions, and that he is very uncomfortable with your doing so.
Oh, and he also tells you – repeatedly – that the other guy you’ve been dating has low morals, is divisive and petty, has a questionable past, may not even be a real “American”, doesn’t understand you, has no respect for the sanctity of life, is a lousy manager, and is out to take all your money and drive you straight into bankruptcy.

UAW – So… If Romney “paid more [taxes] than he owed” (wherever you might have picked up that bit of “information”), are you saying that this makes him an excellent candidate for the Presidency?
I’d prefer more of a “Baby Bear” for that office: Someone who knew enough to pay not too much, and not too little, but an amount that was “just right.”
If he used every legal loophole, fine. (Not really “moral”, but not illegal.) If – on the other hand – he “paid more than he owed”, he’s not quite the financial manager he keeps insisting he is.

I never said Romney was cheating. However, not being willing to show his tax returns, as many if not most, others running for president have done is showing part of his character. He may not be cheating, but he is a man who is hiding, not willing to show his true self. Because he doesn’t want us to know what he has done and be able t ask questions about it. He doesn’t want to be held accountable for it. And MAYBE there is some question as to whether he really did or did not take the correct deductions during that whole Bain situation. I don’t know. I am not accusing, just wondering. We certainly won’t know if he doesn’t show his returns. It is his tactic.
He seems to like to dictate the terms of what we can know about him and it is often conflicting. For instance, he wants us to think that running a business such as Bain will make him good for running this country. But then when we start to analyze things that happened at Bain, that becomes off limits and we can’t ask about it. We can’t ask about his experience as Governor of MA. That didn’t go so well. So that is off limits. We can’t ask him about Akin and abortion. Why not? Doesn’t he have an opinion about it? His running mate sponsored a bill with the guy. His party just upped the ante on abortion rights. How does he feel about that? Why can’t we ask him about it? A recent interviewer was told she could not ask questions about it if she wanted the interview.
So tell me, how do we get to know candidate Romney if he refuses to answer questions that tell us what we want to know. And I still haven’t heard a real fiscal or health plan from him. Just that it will be better than Obama’s. Is he planning on using Ryan’s budget plan? If not, why not come right out and say so? And just saying he’ll repeal ACA without saying what he’ll do to fix the health care system is no answer. What is his health care plan? Has he got one? Or does he think we are fine without one? Why no answers from Romney?

Thanks Cynthia. The Right Wing will say, it is legal and therefore they are doing nothing wrong. But we all know differently. My fiscally conservative brother keeps saying that raising taxes on the rich won’t solve the problems, but that we should end all these loopholes and their abilities to put their monies into foreign shelters where they don’t have to pay taxes on it. I pointed out to him, isn’t that essentially raising their taxes? So, either we raise their taxes on what they don’t hide from the government or we stop letting them hide money from the government and tax them on everything they earn. Either way they need to pay more. It won’t solve everything, but it will be a fair start.

So if there is some merit to Dr. Wilke’s belief that because of the trauma, a woman’s body can block a rape-induced pregnancy, how does he account for those rape victims that do, indeed, get pregnant? Oh, I think I know. It was not forceable or legitimate rape, but a consensual rape or an enjoyable experience. Dr. Wilke, R/R, Todd Akins and Rush Limbaugh should have all been aborted IMHO.

You nailed it with the fact that we need to work to prevent the need as in supporting Planned Parenthood and realistic sex education in schools. I think Romney is running for president because he feels he is entitled to the office. The more I read about and see him, the less I like him. He and his wife seem to think they shouldn’t be required to answer questions from us pesky voters, you know, the little people. At one point, Ann Romney said “it’s our turn” in regard to the White House. Really? They won’t release their tax returns because then they would need to answer questions about them. Here’s what I want to know: why do they have Swiss bank accounts, Cayman Island accounts, a 100 million dollar IRA? Why are they playing by a different set of rules? Romney’s business experience does not qualify him to run the government. The US government is NOT a business. We witnessed how ruthless Mitt can be during the GOP primaries, where he employed a scorched earth policy in regard to his competitors. How hypocritical of him to be whining about the Obama campaign now. The arrogance of both of the Romneys is very off putting.

Here’s my best guess as to why Romney is running for President (and I’ve spent some time asking myself the very same question): If what you seem to be best at is finding some entity that seems to be floundering, then getting a lot of other people to give you their money so you can “take charge” of that entity, then stripping it down, rearranging it, and making it more “profitable”, while not caring too much about who else is involved in that entity, and so long as you have to answer to no one except the people who gave you their money… And then you can sell it off, making some money for your investors and plenty for yourself… Then you might just look at the United States of America as the biggest prize of all… (Especially if things didn’t go all that well in Massachusetts…)

Tithing isn’t a Mormon thing. It’s a Biblical thing. I learned it as Terry explained it – 10% FIRST… that’s pre-tax, pre-bills, everything. I’m not going to give a Sunday school lesson on the whys and hows and all that. Many of my friends here are in the same camp as me, and others would think I’m a loon. As a Christian woman and a person who strives to meet this goal, I wouldn’t ever sling mud at Romney if he actually met his tithe. Good on him, if he’s fulfilling his obligation because he is a believer. I know many liberals would scoff, but I don’t.
Beyond that I really do expect him to meet his legal tax obligations and also be a proponent for fair taxation. If it’s true that his & Ryan’s tax plans raise taxes substantially on the middle & lower classes and screw medicare recipients while championing massive tax breaks for the upper tiers that have NOT used the breaks to create American jobs in the last decade, then I will do my best to subvert their disgustingly & obviously selfish intentions. (sorry for the run-on there…)

I too am am a woman of faith. I am pro-life and pro-choice. I don’t think any God fearing woman could easily choose to have an abortion. For complicated reasons I don’t think it’s right to subvert the law of the land (& separation of church & state) and get into turf wars over prioritizing rights of potential humans over actual humans. As a progressive, I think it makes a lot more sense to spend our energy on solving the issues that lead to abortions in the first place. In my heart I believe this will result in both fewer abortions overall AND fewer damaged women.
The dramatic alive-aborted-baby-dying-in-a-pail thing is abhorrent and almost certainly not a common issue. It has got to be eliminated. Never, never, never have I heard a pro-choice person say this is acceptable. Please don’t ever equate pro-choice with this horror. It would be dishonest to do so.
Late term abortions are abhorrent to me as well. My understanding is that in states where it is legal at all, it is reserved for the most extreme of circumstances. I would never condone the practice in cases where this were not true. Again, let us work to prevent any preventable situation where this could even be considered.
I have never met a person who is pro-abortion. I suppose that sort of person must exist, but none of my pro-choice friends could even remotely be considered pro-abortion. Thanks for your reasoned questions and for not assuming otherwise.

I too am a Methodist and not everyone realizes that in the OT tithing wasn’t an option, it was the least one was expected to give. Also it would be the first “bill” one would pay – 10% of all you had that year, not 10% of what was left over after you paid your other bills. We tend to think of tithing as something we work out way up to once we’ve amassed enough to live comfortably. I do consider my giving to other charities as part of my tithe although I realize that’s stretching it! In the end we are, as Christians, called to treat those less fortunate than we are as surrogates for Jesus. It’s a twist on “what would Jesus do” to “what would you do for Jesus”. If you can see Jesus in the people who need your help it will be easy and I can say while volunteering at a food pantry that I have.

Makes sense to me; whatever. (Although that wasn’t the case in the Methodist Church in which I was raised. The tithing was considered a “bill”, an important commitment, in and of itself. Tithing wasn’t obligatory; it was suggested.)

Gosh, now I wonder if there is a whole group of men who feel that way, that there is no such thing as rape. And a few them just happen to be running on the Rethuglican ticket this year. Which is not to say there aren’t a lot of men who have the utmost respect for women and women’s rights and I’ve known a few of them. Even knew a man who was told from the age of 3 or 4 that if you have fights with your brother, keep them to a minimum, but do not ever EVER under any circumstances ever hit your sister or any female. Hi, Terri, and posters all, named or unnamed –
I have to agree with you in wondering what all this noodling about charitable gifts has to do with anything… Although which charities and organizations a person supports, with time and/or money, is usually a good indication of what they deem important. As Joe Biden quoted his father as saying, when a dinner guest was about to expound on his “values”, “Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what your values are.”
(Please withhold any urges to launch personal attacks on Joe Biden for anything else he, or anyone else in his family, ever said; whoever said that, made an excellent point.)
We want to know what our presidential candidates value; that gives us an idea of what values they will bring to the office. A candidate so reticent about actually showing CONCRETE EVIDENCE of his or her values makes voters wonder what those values actually are. And rightfully so!
Let us keep in mind that members of the Mormon Church, like members of many other religious organizations, are REQUIRED to tithe a minimum of ten percent of their income to the church. High officials in the Church, such as bishops, may be required to contribute more – or less. This I do not know. Nobody just does this for the fun of it; they do it because they believe they are morally commanded to do so. And, from what little I know about the Mormon Church (it’s not a whole lot, but it’s far from nothing), its members do an admirable amount of charitable work, benefitting not only their own members, but others of any faith.
Most, but not all, people who do charitable work, are PROUD to put their names to their contributions. They feel that their public backing of a particular charity adds gravitas to that charity’s work, and may encourage others to join them in their support.
It is very difficult for me to imagine that any donor who wishes his or her charitable work to remain anonymous would decide to run for President, and think for a nanosecond that those donations should not, or would not, become the subject of public inquiry. This is what is so bloody perplexing about the Romneys! Why do they think they should be an exception?
Someone suggested on this blog, a while ago, that maybe they don’t want to disclose their income and expenditures, lest the Church find out that the Romneys have been shortchanging them… This may be a bit far-fetched, since, if the Romneys are as devout as they claim to be, the Church would be very likely to know MUCH more about their finances than any of the rest of us do.
However, unless they, literally, SHOW US THE MONEY, all imaginings will remain on the table. They can claim “invasion of privacy” as much as they want; it’s a nice distraction, as they continue to accumulate millions and millions of dollars. But they cannot claim that they had no idea these inquiries would come up, and continue to express their shock and dismay that anyone would have the effrontery to ask!
Even they must realize that the Office of the Presidency is a PUBLIC office.

Sorry to disabuse you of Romney’s charitable contributions. He says he gave 10% to his church, and we really don’t know how much he gave percentage wise because he hasn’t released full returns and he doesn’t report a lot of his “hidden” income from offshore accounts…as shown by the Bain Capital info on his income received that came out yesterday. If you do the math on President Obama’s returns you will be able to see that he gave about 19.4% of his income to charity. I did the math, it’s not hard. I haven’t figured it out with Joe/Jill Biden but seriously doubt that they gave the figure you named given how active they both are in charitable causes. You’re entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts.

I have been trying to figure out where they’re coming from and may have hit on somthing. As far as the statements made by Rob-me, Ryan, Rush and Akin, could it be that they are so struck on themselves and their manhood that they cannot imagine any woman not LIKING sex, even if it’s by rape; thus, Akin having such a hard time defining differnt types of rape, forcible or legitimate or other words that aren’t needed when defining rape? And I think they may think that in RARE instances where the woman did not want sex or a baby, that’s no problem since she could just “block” the pregnancy. Could that be their way of thinking?

It’s challenging to debate with another viewpoint and freely exchange new information and points of view, but when all is said and done, the *Government* cannot legislate for one religion at the expense of other religions or no religion. Anonymous, since you and the other pro-lifers are unable to physically bear the child in question and then unwilling or unable to raise it, you can not have a say in what the woman does. And while you claim that all these abortions are taking place late term, this is just not the case. Until a fetus becomes viable (without intense medical intervention) it is not capable of living outside the mother’s womb and therefore not a viable human life. Unfortunately, it does not get a say. I would rather see the situation not happen at all. However, if given the choice between seeing an unwanted child brought into the world or not, I would rather see it not brought into the world. There are way too many unwanted, unloved, abused children in the world. We don’t need any more. Would the world be a better place if there were NO unwanted pregnancies. Of course. But that is not going to happen in this society, in this world.
And I will continue my stand that until men take as much responsibility for pregnancy as women, this will always be a problem. And I am not being funny when I say, that when men can get pregnant, bear children, I guarantee you, abortion and all forms of birth control will be legal!

Jill, You hit the nail on the head about abortions back in the Dark Ages which is where some people would like to drag us. We still have unwanted babies born to uncaring and/or stressed out single women. These women are prone to making bad choices for themselves and their helpless children. Too often we hear that a boyfriend has abused and sometimes murdered the child. Our goal should be to ensure all babies are born into loving, nurturing homes where they’ll be as safe as possible. Planned Parenthood and Nurses for Newborns address these situations. Other programs such as Head Start, Parents As Teachers and free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school are vital to healthy teachable children. As I’ve said before, it costs far less to educate a child than it costs to keep that person in jail. Children deserve better than the miserable existence many of them have. I don’t think that’s what God intends, at least not the God I worship.

Sorry Anonymous you are mistaken there are limits in every state as to when it is to late to have an abortion most all are before the first trimester, it is rare case that one is performed after that only if the mother is in danger.
I am also a woman of faith and could not personally have an abortion but firmly believe each woman as an adult should have the right to make a considered choice when given all the options. Places like planned parenthood offers all the options and counceling, closing and limiting those options is treating women as children incapable of making decission for themselves. I spent my early years working in mental health and hospitals I can still remember what it was like when abortion was not legal and women were getting back street abortions or trying to do it themselves. Or at the other end dealing with the kids who were never wanted, believe me we do not want to go back to those days!

I am a woman of faith so my stance on abortion should be obvious. I have two questions.
1. You fight for what you believe in, and you should have that right. In general you feel you are championing a worthy cause. Do I have the same right to champion my cause even though it is direct opposition to yours? If I do then why is it a war on women if I have the same rights as you to promote my beliefs?
2. Two part question. On the topic of abortion. As it stands now, we execute babies at every stage during the pregnancy, and we do it after the child is born if they survive the abortion. How do you feel you are on the short side here? As I see it, you have all the possible advantages.
(A) It seems to me a contradiction that you consider any action that would take away the right for a women to chose as an act of war on women. Why then do you feel the child then deserves no say whatsoever and not be allowed to have someone advocate for the child their right to live? Do you not see a lack of reasonable balance giving one complete consideration, while giving the other none?

Pi & Gato: I agree. Wanting to replace Akin is only so that Regressives can have what they think is a viable candidate against McCaskill. However, the party line meant to keep everyone in line has attracted some real whackos who thumb their nose at authority – as we see with Akin. I believe, in order to replace him now, the Democratic party in Missouri would have to agree. Hope Akin doesn’t meet with any unfortunate accidents in the near future.
Regressive Veep candidate Paul is the exact clone of Akin on this issue. It’s just Paul didn’t put in quite so offensive terms.
The whole save the baybees schtick is just code for wanting to get women out of the public sphere and back into domestic subjugation. And the whole motivation behind that is fear of women. The only way to subjugate women nowadays is to deny them reproductive freedom. All of the other arguments against women’s rights touted in the 60s & 70s are obviously bunk. Now, the asshats are using guilt and shame along with legislating us as murderers in order to subjugate us. As another poster put it, women – you have rights until you get pregnant, then you have no rights during the pregnancy, then you have rights again.
Not to mention, any guy who thinks you’re getting too uppity can rape you to try and take away your rights and potentially your livelihood and/or life. Is this where we are going as a nation? Committing crimes against women to take away their rights? That is totally unacceptable.

i couldn’t re-find the story I read which spelled out how long, under law, that the party has to replace him if he steps down but it is a couple weeks or so. Past that time frame there is no changing horses mid stream , he’s on the ballot no matter what.

Folks – please don’t get sidetracked and distracted too much by bright shiny things. Helen’s point about the Republican Party platform ( and echoed by many here) is very important- the hypocrisy in R ranks with calling for Mr Akin to step down is obvious.
However, it is also a calculated and cynical move to replace him with someone who might still beat Ms McCaskill- which is the real prize.
Under all that hand wringing and “having the vapors” over Mr Akin’s asinine remarks is the usual cold lack of concern for anything except a win for the party.
and before you chime in UAW- yes the Dems do it too.Saw it in our last Senate race big time but my “whole thing” trusts the Dems a hell of a lot more overall on these issues- even when they are being centrist asshats.

Women need to take and accept responsibility for themselves. This battle will continue until the last traces of the entitlement one gender feels to dictate terms to the other is eradicated. If you are a woman and you are sitting here reading this blog and the comments posted and nodding in agreement; if you are a woman who is commenting on this blog in any way; if you are a woman who has been told what to believe and how to believe and is tired of it get off your ass and do something. Make phone calls. Drum up support for groups that are fighting the fight you agree with. DO – SOME -THING!!!
Every day is listen to women where I work, where I socialize and on the web sites I visit who talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. Frankly, I don’t need to hear more talk. I need to hear that you’ve organized a letter writing/email campaign to convince your elected representatives you mean business. Comment on articles in your local papers and online. Stand up for your rights instead of being a wuss and thinking someone else is going to do it for you.
No whining and no excuses. Either DO something or quit complaining.

I know a lot more about George and MItt than your cheat sheet shows. The best thing about that family was Lenore Romney. Its too bad that her bid for a Senate seat did not go well.
As for the outer Mitt Romney, yes, he cleans up well, but he did get some money from his late father’s estate and the family money George got as president of American Motors was what provided for the upscale location of the family home and the private school education all the way through the last earned degree. What you don’t seem to know is what Mitt learned from dad – how to take a healthy business and wreck it. People were buying George’s cars. Remember the Rambler? The Gremlin? George moved American Motors from Michigan to another state, lock, stock and barrel. No one in MIchigan could believe it, especially the reasons given. AMC was supposed to have a better chance (competitive edge) outside of Michigan but it certainly didn’t last long. It went belly up. Can you imagine how hard that was onthe work force and their pensions and insurance? Those were the guys without the safety net for themselves and their families. The Romneys didn’t suffer the same results. Does that sound familiar to the pattern of Bain? You bet Mitt knows how to create jobs — in India and China, all the signs of an outsourceaholic. He may display himself as a religious man but my own religion tells me that if I operated the way he did with Bain I would never get into heaven.

I’m thinking perhaps a legitimate rape needs to occur on a couple (more?) Republican political d-bags so they have a first-hand understanding as to what exactly a rape entails–and sexual violation is only a small part of it–it’s the power, control, and violence that is really happening during a rape. If they can’t get it logically, maybe they need to experience one first-hand. I’m all for it.

Yes Mitt Romney has all the “perfect” credentials doesn’t he? And he also has just the right number of digits to hold a pen and sign anything put before him. In his desire to be president he has sold out to the highest bidders and I fear he will sell America to the highest bidder too. Those donors expect something for their money.
He cleans up nicely but does he have any values? Does he take a stand on anything? He flip flops so many times it is hard to tell. I don’t expect you to agree but as an animal person I tend to judge people by how they treat their pets or wildlife or the environment. Not saying you must have one or even like them, but whether you place any value on another living thing. Ann had another dressage horse with more talent than her present horse. It developed leg problems and so became of no further use to them. The horse was sold, as a sound, for good money. The new owners discovered the horse had been given 4 different medications to mask its lameness and pain. IMO, this is a user, a taker who is only looking out for their own best interest.
I don’t trust him not to get us into a war with Iran or Middle East within his first year if elected. Russia and China have financial interests in Iran and they will not be happy if we interfere with those interests. Either one may have the “ego” or desire to be the one who puts “American Arrogance” in its place. I don’t think it will be done with drones or boots on the ground. We got our butts beat by two third world countries using nuts and bolts and creative imagination. We have pushed our troops to the breaking point. What do we have left to go into a another war?
Personally I am a bit uncomfortable with the person whose hand is on the “switch/button” who has a strong belief that a fantastic Paradise awaits them in afterlife. I would prefer it to be in the hand of a person who questions the existence of heaven or who has no expectations of one.

Republican politicians have been saying what Akin said, alleging that females are equipped with some fantasy Reproductive Defense System that prevents conception in cases of rape – since at least 1980! Where was the outrage? One even stated regarding rape “If it’s inevitable, she should just relax and enjoy it!” George W. Bush appointed one of these ignorant, self-righteous misogynists to a federal judgeship! Where was the outcry? Paul Ryan, with 64 other Republicans, co-sponsored a bill to declare fertilized eggs “persons” – and strip females of their “personhood”, rights, freedom, privacy… Where was the backlash??? Awh Helen, I hollered. Did not know I could do that today. Thanks for the post. There is no one like you on this planet. You are so right, Mr. Akin is just repeating the talking points. However, a few words too many did him in. I doubt the current debate will change any diehard republican’s mind. However, the outcry is probably making some of them want to backpedal. Well, I know who they are and what they stand for. I heard about their platform. Can’t wait till next week. How are they going to reconcile their platform with denouncing the poor Akin fellow? He thought he was safe, poor poor fellow.
I do know who has mine and my daughter’s best interest at heart. No humouring me would do, they are all hypocrites. I keep repeating this statement: What about the child once here? What do they propose to do with him or her if all safeguards are gone as they are planning to do away with many of them? We have to cut the deficit remember?

Mittens evidently does not feel that he is obligated to tell anyone much about anything he’s done… Not about being Governor of Massachusetts, and how that went; not about being CEO of Bain Capital, and how that went; not about how he ran the Salt Lake Olympics; not about his faith; not about how he handles his money, and why we should let him handle ours.
Why he’s even wanting to be President remains a total mystery to me. And he seems to want to keep it that way.
HEY! Great concept! Tell people they should vote for you… But never tell them why they should. If this program works, we are… screwed.

Let us all take a moment out and have some “sympathy” for the Grand Old Party. As Margaret and Helen have noted in this post, the GOPers are reeling over Mr. Akin’s intemperate remarks and his inability to recognize that he could sink their whole gig in November.
Now, Hurricane Isaac is bearing down on Florida and could raise all kinds of havoc in Tampa even to the point of cancelling next week’s dog-and-pony show (errrrr, convention).
That’s two natural disasters in as many weeks. The evangelical wing of the right wing of the GOP has often peddled causative relationships . . . e.g., Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans was God’s punishment for homosexuality, etc.
How on earth are the poor GOPers going to explain these current events away? I mean, God must be punishing them for something!

Now I’ve had my second relapse of the day…
According to Ann, in the warm and fuzzy interview designed to show how she and Willard understand the struggles of the middle class, she said about their “struggling” college years, something like, “Fortunately, Mitt had inherited some stock from his father, which we were able to sell off bit by bit.” And that allowed them to get through their college years without working… Even though, according to Ann, in that same interview, they weren’t able to “entertain”, and had to eat tuna and pasta a few nights a week. What an effing shame… When I was in college, taking about thirty hours a week of courses, and working an extra twenty hours a week collecting fees from music students at a local music shop, and making egg sandwiches for truck drivers, while wearing a hairnet, for another ten hours a week… A dinner with friends consisted of a package of boiled spaghetti with catsup on top. No cheese. Maybe a couple of beers. Or not.
My parents managed to pay my tuition; I worked to pay for everything else. There was no inherited stuff to sell off. I bless my parents every day for teaching me to be responsible for myself, and grateful for everything they gave me.
Good god! Willard touched the capital! Primary sin of every investor. Bet he never did that again…
Who gives a GGD what he looks like. Are we electing a poster boy, or someone who will serve all the people of this country, and give a damn about anyone outside his personal comfort zone?
And, BTW, I trust you understand that there are a whole bunch of really enraged women out here… And WE ARE THE MAJORITY. So suck it up.

Much as I hate to say it, I fear Atkin WILL win Missouri because some of the republican women in that state would rather vote a straight ticket. Seeing Atkin win in spite of his 13th century beliefs is better than giving a democrat a chance at the senate.
I think he needs to spend a little more time in his science and technology committee, and maybe take a women’s thing class so he can understand the “SCIENCE” that has evolved over the last several decades. He’s on the committee for science and technology for pete’s sake!!! … makes you want to hang your head in shame…

Well, Tradesman, I’m breaking my vow to myself to delete all your comments. But that would be so unfair, wouldn’t it? (I’ve done pretty well with that for the last forty-eight, or sixty-two, hours. I’ll remind myself to do that again, very soon.) I know you’re desperate to be heard.
I’m having a relapse. Maybe I need an intervention. And PLEASE don’t send me, or any of us, a gazillion old email rumors that you’ve dug up somewhere.
R/R are saying they don’t quite support the GOP “platform” on abortion rights, today, sort of, but maybe not exactly… But, of course, they DO support it. They just don’t want anyone in their party to actually SAY anything like that out loud, in front of the populace of the great US of A. Because if someone actually SAID something like that, the white doughy guys would have to immediately withdraw all financial support for him/her – because they just can’t have people out there saying stuff like that out loud. And, of course, that is exactly what they did.
They’ve got to keep this kind of stuff under the radar – because if people really knew what they have in mind, they would be sent immediately to the first ring of purgatory. Where they might rest for a while, before moving on to wherever.

By the way, UAW Ryan cosponsored a bill Akin, which I’ve already described in detail in this blog. So his views are known to be in kind with Akin’s when it comes to life beginning at conception, no abortion even in cases of rape, incest and the health of the mother, ending the use of most forms of birth control (since they can be considered a form of abortion), etc. Since Romney picked him as a running mate and flip flops as often as a fish out of water, what are we to assume about his stand on these matters?

A lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being “likable” or that he doesn’t “relate well” to people. Frankly, we struggled to understand why. So after much research, we have come up with a Top Ten List to explain this “unlikablility.”
Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:
1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting’s #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.
2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.
3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)
4. Can’t speak in a fake, southern, “black preacher voice” when necessary.
5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School… and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.
6. Doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today’s America?
7. Represents an America of “yesterday”, where people believed in God, went to Church, didn’t screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!
8. Has a family of five great sons….and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that “choice” deserves America’s scorn.
9. Oh yes…..he’s a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

HI, Elsie – Lordy; I’d forgotten how good that show was. And there was no wasting time there trying to “reach across the aisle”, or debating the supposed validity of opposing “truths”…! What a bloody sleeveless errand that’s turned out to be, every time.
Thanks to you, and all the wonderful posters (you know who you are, and if you’re not one of them, you know that, too) here today, many of whose names are new to me (I’ve only been following for a couple of months). AND BIG THANKS TO YOU, HELEN, FOR YOUR GUTS, WIT, AND INTELLIGENCE! And to Margaret, quiet co-conspirator that you are.
And maybe a thanks, as well, to the Universe, for putting Akin on the national screen, and having those words come out of his mouth. The far right’s agenda is now even more undeniably apparent. So much for those indignant claims that the War on Women is “fabricated”!
I wonder if any of the “personhood” people have given a thought to what the passage of such an amendment (heaven forbid) might mean to the country. In my opinion, it would mean the arrival of tens of thousands of unwanted children, many without an intact family and probably most of them born in poverty. It would mean the increase in women’s deaths from self-administered abortions, suicides by young women who had no access to birth control, recourse to medical care, child support, or even food and shelter for themselves and their baby. The return of the bloodied coat hanger. The growth of back-alley abortion mills. More newborns found abandoned in dumpsters. Massive increase in the need for law officers to find and prosecute all those women and abortion mills. An enormous burden on the legal system to prosecute women who “murdered an unborn person”. Huge increases in costs for the penal system, to house all those convicted. And on and on and on – and none of this is EVER addressed by those who profess their belief in the “sanctity of life”!
I guess, in a twisted way, we could look at this as the GOP’s plan to “get American back to work.” They sure as hell haven’t presented anything else.
I feel I can confidently say that there is hardly a woman alive who has had an abortion – and I am one of them – who made that difficult choice without some serious soul-searching, and who does not think of it, from time to time, for the rest of her life. The best of us know that sometimes life us hands us hard choices, and we do the best we can when that happens. (Remember the movie, “Sophie’s Choice”?)
I was twenty-two when I got pregnant, with a supposedly “foolproof” IUD in place. (I certainly wasn’t being irresponsible!) I’m white, upper-middle-class, well educated, raised by a loving family, and was living with a supportive boyfriend (whom I later married). I had access to every resource in the world… And I chose to have an abortion. I have never regretted that decision, difficult as it was. I can hardly imagine what a seventeen-year-old young woman, with none of the resources I had, could possibly think or do if she were forced to continue a pregnancy she did not want. And I would certainly never presume to insist that she do one thing or another – unless I were willing to be personally responsible for helping to care for her and her child until that child was an adult.
The “personhood people” want to inflict their own moral beliefs on all women – and are apparently unwilling to take any responsibility whatsoever for the consequences of their doing so. As so many here have noted, their position seems to be, “You have to have the kid, and then you’re on your own.”
THAT is what I find absolutely unconscionable.

I was trying to do my good deed for the day and find a blog that the “Rob-Me” supporters could spout off on where their comments might be more appreciated, and I ran across one called To Be Right, I think it was called. Can you believe they’re still ranting on there about the photo of Obama not putting his hand over his heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance? UAW, I remember that you’ve been posting comments on this thread for quite some time, but I don’t remember you ever being as obtuse as you seem to be today. WTF makes you think that the First Lady waging a campaign to help people find ways to eat healthier is in any way equivalent to someone legislating what women can do with their own bodies? The FLOTUS is making suggestions to help women become healtheir. The Rethuglicans are making laws to control women. And what does Bloomberg with his 16 oz. drink rule have to do with any of this? You and the Rethuglicans get the right to have an opinion when you grow a uterus. There weren’t a bunch of women of either party complaining about tax dollars being used for Viagra or other ED medications.

Frankly, UAW I don’t agree with the NY Mayor’s edicts on soft drinks, etc. I think education and access (to good healthy food and good affordable healthcare and health insurance) is the way to go in all situations, not legislation about how we should eat or what we can and cannot do to our bodies. And I might say again, that men and women share equal responsibility in sexual situations, preventing pregnancy, etc. But women bear the burden of carrying the child and usually raising the child and until that changes, it is the woman’s choice. I believe that if the man is in her life and is willing to be supportive (emotionally, financially, spiritually) in all aspects of the child’s life, he should be included in the decision, but ultimately, it is up to her, since it is she who is putting her body on the line.

These ridiculous comments show that the Republican Party should start their assembly with a sex education tape. That anyone in this day and age can believe Akin’s statement about not getting pregnant from rape, or Rush Limbaugh’s ignorant statement about Sandra Fluke’s use of birth control, “she has to to have sex so much she needs lots of birth control pills” as if you had to take a bc pill every time you had sex to prevent pregnancy, shows a total, and willful ignorance of how you get pregnant or not get pregnant and how bc pills work. The GOP and RWNJ’s have elevated “stupidity and ignorance” to a new high in their ranks.
However Akin’s statement aside, he doesn’t believe in abortion even for rape or incest, whereas the Republican’s just approved their platform which prohibits abortion for “rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother”..no abortion for any reason whatsoever. They don’t care about life. They care about the subjugation of women. If they really cared about life they wouldn’t be cutting foodstamp programs and school lunch programs that help feed the poor and working poor and elderly. The GOP is Ebenezer Scrooge in a pinstripe suit “are there no workhouses? are there no prisons?” and the poor “best die and decrease the surplus population”.

I just cannot imagine how any of them can really believe what they are saying…but I also think this (akin and company) is a result of the breakdown of what a friend of mine calls “the discipline of facts.” The idea that *my truth* is as valid as *your truth* has unleashed every assclown with political asperations to just go ahead and spout off whatever he or she believes is the *truth*. I’m glad they’re Christian and I don’t care if they are Republican or not, but the way they act like the two are synonymous really confuses me. Especially the ones I know who HATE gays, HATE gay marriage, HATE Obama, HATE blacks, HATE for women to have a right to choose, and well, the list goes on and on. The only love I’ve seen in some of them lately (the ones I know personally) is love for Chick-Fil-A who, by the way, apparently supports HATE groups!

Lately whenever I see any Republican on TV spouting hatred against our President but never with new ideas to bring the country forward I have to blink several times because I could swear they are wearing Taliban turbans — unlike the Taliban they are instead terrorizing through legal processes instead of roaming the country side stoning women and blinding girls with acid so they can’t study – doesn’t make them any different – just more sophisticated.
Plus I don’t understand why media doesn’t hold up their hand when Mitt whines about the President ignoring “issues” and talking from time-to-time about Mitt’s tax returns or Bain because we have so many more important issues to address…then instead of outlining HIS plans condemns the President on killing bin Laden, saving the auto industry and giving us almost 30 months of growth…slow…but growth. I want the media to say but sir everyone releases tax returns, you’ve not even released one full year. But sir you are running on your experience leading Bain, but sir you want to eliminate Affordable Care but have not introduced any plan to replace it or when that would occur…you will eliminate immediately but take a couple of years to replace it? What happens in the meantime? You want to cut education…where? You want to re-write tax laws – how? You want to introduce a new tax…what is it exactly so independent experts can at least give an opinion on it. About the only thing the GOP is very explicit about is how women have too much freedom and only the white, GOP male is capable of knowing what they need to be happy and healthy. Every member (male & female) of the GOP should have to work in a rape crisis center for 6 months, have to visit the truly poor and disadvantaged and have to help them through the maze of how to get off “the dole”. Most people who don’t suffer through this have empathy and recognize “there but for the grace of God go I” but it seems the GOP has none so for them – real life experiences must be provided.

Isn’t funny how Romney chose a running mate who cosponsored a Sanctity of Life Act that would protect a fetus from the moment of conception barring all abortions whether the life of the mother were in danger, or in cases of rape or incest also making illegal most forms of birth control. Yes, of course there are moderate Republicans. But they seem to be laying low in the background these days, allowing the radicals to take control.
By the way, just because Bush and McCain were only against abortions in the some and not all cases, doesn’t make them ‘good’ Republicans. The fight isn’t one of women wanting the right to make decisions for our bodies only if we were raped. It is repugnant that any public official would make the statements that Rep. Akin made. But it is also repugnant that any group of public officials, mostly men, would think that they can begin to understand and then legislate about / against the health and welfare of women’s bodies.
I am a woman who does not need birth control and, thank goodness, has never needed an abortion. I am grateful for having those options available to me throughout my life. I know a few women who have had to make that choice. It was an agonizing one for all of them. Not one of them ever made it lightly or without long, careful thought. But I have, through the years, supported their choices and helped them through their decision. Not one of them regrets the decision, but all of them think about it once in a while. And all of them are grateful for the option having been available to them. By the way all of them had been using birth control. But birth control is not 100% infallible. It fails. None of them were in a financial, emotional, or spiritual position to raise a child. One friend was married and her husband supported her abortion because he knew she was in not ready to raise another child at that time. How marvelous to be married to such an enlightened man. Most of them did not have any support from the man who helped put her in that position.
And there in lies the rub. When, all you Republicans raise your voices indignantly at how women should just keep their legs shut, and all the other repugnant crap you say … Why aren’t you telling the men to keep their junk in their pants? The fact of the matter is the cat is already out of the bag and we have a nation of men and women who enjoy sex. Why shouldn’t they. It is enjoyable. But until it is equal on all sides, until men and women share 100% equality in reproduction, this problem will always exist. And as long as women literally and figuratively bear the children, we have the say with what happens with our bodies. We walk around for 8 months with aches and pains and bulging bellies. We incur the risks to our health. We go through the pains of labor. We, even in today’s modern society, still bear the brunt of raising the child. If it ever comes to pass that men can bear the children, I guarantee you, they will see our point of view!

Akin said he “used the wrong words”. What might be the “right words” to point out that, basically, a woman can’t get pregnant unless she feels like it?
The late Howard Thurman wrote about a time he was raking leaves for a white family, and their young daughter kept scattering all the piles he accumulated. He asked her to stop, and she refused. So she stuck him in the hand with a pin. When he shouted, “Ow! That hurt!” She replied, “That can’t hurt you – black people can’t feel anything.” Yeah; and a woman can decide whether or not she wants to get pregnant when she’s raped…
Total ignorant, repulsive, abhorrent misogyny… But I repeat myself…
And, of course, Akin just had the – whatever – to accurately make crystal clear the basis of the GOP “platform” on the subject… At least Akin’s staying in the race so the party heavyweights don’t have a chance to try to slide in somebody else who might be more… “subtle”…

Akin’s crocodile tears and phoney explanation of his “error” is so transparent.
He claims that he used the wrong word at the wrong time and in the wrong place. B as in B; S as in S.
Then, he turns around — in Bachmann-esque fashion — and doubles down on his nonsense by claiming that his use of the “legitimate” adjective was being used to distinguish a certain kind of rape (the word he was searching for was probably “forcible” if you were to believe his explanation).
What he was really doing was using “legitimate” to distinguish a certain “claim of rape” — you know the kind that leaves marks on the victim and isn’t just some after-the-fact excuse that loose women use to justify obtaining an abortion.
The most disgusting part of this whole fiasco is that Akin inadvertantly exposed the actual position and beliefs of the fundie, teabaggin’, evangelical wing of the GOP by blurting out this “truth”. That is the real reason that everyone from Mittens to Chinless Mitch McConnell immediately called for him to bow out of his Senate race. They aren’t outraged in the least about Akin’s comments (if they were, they wouldn’t have chosen Paul Ryan as the Veep candidate — after all, he co-sponsored Akin’s “sanctity of life” bill that reflects this very kind of thinking).
No — their motive was quite different than disgust. This is all about one thing — political survival. And it all echoes the GOP’s last bone-head presidential campaign move.
Fakin’ Akin is to 2012 as Failin’ Palin was to 2008. Both of them caused a total collapse of their party’s presidential aspirations.

Mr Akin is relying on information that is still hanging around (sort of like mildew), although it originated in the 13th century. I believe people who want to hang on to the medical “facts” of the 13th century should stock up on leeches. That way when they, or a family member is ill, they can be bled to bring the four humours back into balance.

Great post. Even Akin’s apology is insulting. And terribly condescending. His lack of awareness of what is really behind his statements is quite scary. For someone to be THIS arrogant and completely blind to the arrogance itself floors me.

Thanks for the full quote. It’s even worse in context. If Akin was right, women wouldn’t need birth control. They could just will themselves not to get pregnant. Is he Catholic?
