Life’s a bitch… and so is Dick Cheney.

Margaret, I am here to tell you that Dick Cheney is a bitch – a big one too.  I mean I thought that Sarah Palin was a bitch, but even she can’t hold a candle to this guy.  Have you been listening to him recently?

I would say that it takes some pretty big balls to go on national television again and again to justify torture, but Dick was too much of a wimp to serve his country in the military so I’m pretty sure there ain’t much hanging between his legs.   But being a bitch myself,  I can assure you that you don’t need balls to be a bitch.  You just need to not give a damn what other people think of you… and Dick doesn’t even care what his family and friends think about him much less the rest of us.

I have to admit that I am more than a little perplexed by Dick’s rise to power.  He flunked out of Yale – something even George W. Bush didn’t do – and has at least two DWI’s on his record – one more than Georgie Boy.  So basically from 2001 to 2009 we had two dry-drunk idiots running the country.  But only one of them has had the good sense to shut the hell up since leaving office.

Cheney came into politics as part of the Nixon administration and ended his politcal career with George W. Bush.  Along the way he managed to skip the Reagan years opting instead to represent the least populous state in the Union.   In fact, of the past five Republican presidents  since Cheney got into politics, the only one that Dick didn’t work for was Ronald Reagan.  Talk about a guy who can’t pick a winning horse.   He works for Nixon, Ford, skips Reagan, and then comes back for the two Bushes.   Four  failed Presidencies and this guy still thinks his shit doesn’t stink.  Of course this is the guy who headed up the vice presidential search for George W. Bush only to decide to pick himself as the candidate.  I’d say he’s mastered the art of not smelling his own shit.

During his tenure as Secretary of Defense he actively worked to reduce the size of our military.  And when asked about the FIVE deferments that kept him from serving in the military he responded by saying, “I had other priorities in the sixties than military service.”    And yet today he wants us to listen to him pontificate on how best to protect our nation?  He shot his friend in the face for goodness sakes.  Too bad for his hunting buddies that he got those deferments because the military might have helped him with his aim.

And let’s not forget about his co-workers and family members.  When someone manges to pull Scooter Libby out from under the bus, be sure to ask him what he thinks about his former boss.   And then there’s his daughter, the lesbian.  His own daughter is in a same sex relationship but Dick won’t stand up against his party’s stance on gay marriage.   So in addition to shooting his friends in the face and pushing employees under the bus,  he also eats his young.  Now that, my friend, is one  hell of a big bitch.

Hey Dick.  Stick a cork in it you good for nothing jackass.   You and George were elected with the narrowest of margins and you never looked back.  Eight years later an overwhelming majority put Obama in office and as far as I am concerned, he has the green-light to put this country back on track.   If you don’t like it, you can kiss my ass, because if I had to choose between liberating Iraq from Saddam or liberating us from you, there would be one more Hussein in the world and one less Cheney.  Given the opportunity, I would have stuffed you down that hole in the ground with Saddam and sealed the door shut.

I mean it.  Really.

I would like to correct one small item in your post. These worms were never elected. They were installed both times against the wishes of We The People. Election fraud, Katherine Harris, Jeb Bush and a corrupt U.S. Supreme Court installed those thugs the first time and bald faced election fraud kept them there.

After 8 years of their reign of terror the main question that remains is who are they still blackmailing with the info they collected from their telephone tapping, email intercepting games.

George Bush and Dick Cheney are two of the most disgusting excuses for human beings to ever occupy the oval office. Both should be arrested and turned over to the World Court for prosecution for war crimes and other crimes against humanity.

The same might be said for those members of Congress who are too cowardly to bring these criminals to justice & who voted to allow these jerks to destroy this country from the inside out.

It almost makes one wish for the days of the Old West where they would have been tried, convicted and hanged on the spot!

I do respect the office of the President and I wish him all the luck in the world, which he will need. Bama is more out of antagonizing people here. You need to back up your facts Pool, I don’t give too much respect to people who are supported by terrorist regimes either. Muammar Qadaffi, leader of Libya (where terrorists have been funded and harbored for years) has spoken out about his support for BAMA. Why do you think that is, he knows Obama’s tough talk about terrorism and support for Isreal are nothing more than means to election. Why don’t the Marines you know agree with him? If war in Iraq is a result of profit minded officials, why then didn’t they do this in 90, when we had the support of the entire world and your boy, Vice President Mr. Honorable Richard Cheney was the secretary of defense?

  16. John, you are all over the map with these comments. Let’s try to keep focused and stick to the issues presented here.
First, I think (yes, my opinon) Cheney has a guilty conscience and is trying to rewrite his legacy. I also think (again, my opinion) he fears prosecution. And yes, you can argue compensation packages from here to eternity. Bottom line – It makes him money.
Second, I think Iraq was a war of opportunity and I feel civilians in charge abused our military for personal gain. They removed men in charge of the military who were not “on board”. “Yes men”, if you will. Those Generals who raised any objections were reassigned. Their opinions and expertise ignored. I should not have to remind you how many of our young and brave citizens have sacrificed their lives for our “crusade”. Our democracy building or nation building effort, if you will. I think it was a poorly planned war and we sent our best soldiers over there (again and again) with little and insufficient preparation and no true regard for their safety. And even before we finished what we started in Afganistan. A diversion of resources and focus. A bad idea by civilians in charge (my opinion).
I am well aware of our ties and obligations to Israel. I am well aware of their enemies on all fronts that want them destroyed.
I also know we put Saddam in power to begin with. I don’t have an issue with his demise, at all. He was not a good person. His regime, however, did keep Iran in it’s place. That balance has been destroyed.
Jesse Ventura served as a navy SEAL and is a hero (my opinion). In your OPINION he’s nutbag. Please provide evidence of his nutbagginess.
The topic of this post is Dick Cheney. We address other people in other posts. This one post is not to be a complete airing of the populace in politics. “We people” as you seem to want to categorize us, do post and discuss other topics. “Bama”, as you refer to our president, deserves to be given the respect of his position. This slur alone shows your disrespect. I guess you are no longer in service of this country to not address the commander in chief by his true name. If you are (or were) truly a marine, John, you know these things. All the marines I know may not agree with him, but they respect his authority. They also tell me “once a marine, always a marine.”
And if you are going to quote “Bama”, please provide the reference and not just opinion and heresay. Are you insinuating that is was our president who issued driver’s licenses to the terrorists involved in 9/11? That is absurd.
If you want to discuss Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and other cronies, that is not the topic of this post. Please consider the topic at hand and provide your evidence to support your convictions and rants.
The balls in your court, sir.

Also, to insuiate that the Vice President knew about 9/11 specifically and did nothing is absurd, he is not the only one sitting on those briefings which means others knew of the impending attack as well, where are they on this blog?

    Like

  22. Poolman, are you speculating on Mr. Cheney’s motivation now? Suspecting that he is trying to clear his conscience before he dies? Thats a good theory pal, but thats all it is, theory. Also you should take a look at executive compensation packages and options which you may not even understand. So he sent us to war to make money, is that what you truly believe? Yes, I agree that WMD was perhaps misguided and I also believe that we liberated Iraq because of a much larger picture than anyone on here may fathom. I will give some which I received from a more reliable source than any of these little links. That is we (US) took out a hostile regime that did in fact aid in terrorist organizations and provided a safe haven for them to operate. The US also took out a threat who was making Isreal very nervous, don’t ignore their political clout Poolman.
Also, Generals have their motivations as well and there are plenty who don’t get air time who are proponents of our tactics. Ventura is a nutbag with his own agenda, please don’t disregard that.
But on a larger note, is this what you people want to use time discussing, going round and round about former Vice President Cheney? Why don’t you use the same passion to address things like Bama saying that he voted against the war? Interesting claim since he was not yet in the Senate at the time of the vote on the Iraq war isn’t it?

  30. John, Yes Mr. Cheney does have money, power, and influence, and certainly does not need anymore of that. But when you are closer to death than birth, which of those will matter? Which of those things will comfort him, as he’s lying awake at night? Which will benefit him in the after-life?
If you think Mr. Cheney is truly concerned with our country’s well being, then he should apologize for not having kept 9/11 from happening during his watch. He should admit he dropped the ball. We (and yes I was one who voted Bush/Cheney in 2000) relied on them to protect us. They ignored the warnings that have been proven existed and were overlooked. Do you deny those as fact, also? Do you think they are all a “liberal conspiracy”? What about the fabricated WMDs in Iraq? Iraq was on the agenda before 9/11. Those are now known facts. Another “liberal fabrication”?
All he is doing now is trying to justify his actions since 9/11. He is not trying to help our country when he speaks out. These are scare tactics. Intended to solicit fear and paranoia. Yes, terrorism is real and there are people out there whose only goal is to harm us. We have some of those on our own soil whose skin, religion, and birth certificates don’t differ much from you or I.
And what about his Halliburton shares and profits? Weren’t they benefiting from the military machine all along? Even to this day? Doesn’t it benefit him still to keep our war machine going? Where did he amass his wealth, power, and influence?
And how do you feel about those who have spoken out in contrast to Mr. Cheney? What do you think of Jesse Ventura’s comments? General Patraeus? Colin Powell?
These men actually served our country. I don’t know if you have the ability to look at any of this objectively. But there it is.

While Medieval Europe was bogged down in the Middle Ages for 500 (that’s FIVE HUNDRED) YEARS in the grip of Roman Catholic Church control; between 628 and 1058 the Arab Moslems made enormous strides in all areas of their endeavors.

After the Moslems invaded and conquered parts of peaceful Hindu India, along with the usual spoils of war they brought back orange trees and spread them throughout southern Europe, especially Spain. Cotton was introduced into Europe from India by the Arabs. Muslin cotton and damask linen from Damascus are two from their rich fabric heritage. To grow cotton, canals and extensive irrigation systems were devised to bring the usually arid desert lands into productivity.

A fascinating bit of innovation was another import (stolen?) from India. The Vedic religion of the Hindus invented and then developed ‘fables’ as a means of teaching moral values. The Moslems brought this type of stories back from India and they eventually became incorporated into Western lore.

The Caliph Harun al-Rashid (789-809), a contemporary of Charlemagne, proposed a Suez Canal. His idea simmered for a thousand years until the French, with some financial backing from the English, finally completed building it in 1869. The construction of that canal took ten years.

The windmill was in use in Moslem countries long before it first appeared in Europe in the twelfth century. The Moslems beat Marco Polo to China by 425 years. The technique for making paper was brought from China, making possible the manufacture of books. Paper had been in use in China since 105. By 794, books were common in Baghdad. They did not appear in Germany until 1228 and in England until 1309.

The technology of tempered steel was brought from India to Persia. The Arabs took it from Persia and made it into the celebrated ‘Damascus’ blades and later into Toledo steel. Other Moslem Arab incursions into China brought back gunpowder, the compass and playing cards, first to the Middle East and eventually, Europe. Another ingenious first was the use of carrier pigeons.

From about 700 on, the Islamic world experienced a virtual Renaissance similar to that of the Italian during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries in Europe. They made astonishing advances in science and mathematics. ARABIC NUMERALS and zeros used in astronomy were brought from Hindu India in 662. The Arabic word,’safir’, meaning, ‘empty’ became the English word, ‘cipher’. In the hands of Latin scholars, ‘safir’ translated into ‘zephyrum’, in turn shortened into ‘zero’ by the Italians. The Moslems also imported the decimal system from India, which of course, ultimately spread to Europe.

The Arabs are credited with developing algebra. (That is a strike against them right there when I think of the years of high school and college algebra I sat through. I did fine in those classes but whole days in my life since have gone by without having to solve a single quadratic equation!) As a matter of fact, algebra was literally OUTLAWED in Europe for over two hundred years. (Right on!)

‘Algebra’ is from the Arabic words, ‘al-jabr’, that translates ‘restitution, ‘completion’ or ‘adjustment’. They also came up with tables in trigonometry and other higher mathematics. During this time their astronomers automatically assumed from their calculations that the earth was round!!!

The Moslems very nearly invented the science of chemistry. As was most of Medieval learning in this field, it was tied into alchemy and the occult. Jabir ibn Hayyan (702-765) well known in Europe as Gebir, was the most famous. Because of his work in alchemy he came up with the concept of the scientific experimental method five hundred years before Roger Bacon.

Ali al-Masuda compiled a thirty-volume encyclopedia. As an historian, he compared favorably to Pliny and Herodotus. This native of Baghdad postulated a theory of evolution; mineral to plant to animal to man. Of course, this did not set well with fundamentalist Moslems and he spent the last ten years of his life in Cairo in exile where he died in 956.

Because of Mohammed’s strict abhorrence of idolatry, no depiction of human or animal forms was allowed in art or sculpture. As a result, the Moslems developed beautifully intricate geometric designs. The Moors occupied Spain for 756 (that’s SEVEN HUNDRED-FIFTY-SIX) years and built the magnificent Alhambra in Granada (c.1248) and the Alcazar at Seville (c.1181). Both were constructed as fortresses as well as magnificent palaces.

A Persian architect built the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Began in 1631, it took twenty-two years and twenty-two thousand workmen in forced labor to complete. The Mughal (Mogul) emperor, Shāh Jāhan, commissioned this exquisite example of Moslem architecture as a tribute to his beloved wife, Arjumand Banū Begum, also known as Mumtaz Mahal, (‘Chosen One of the Palace’.) She died in childbirth after giving her husband 14 children in 18 years!!!

Most cultures and religions develop as a result of geography and climate. And as with most cultures and religions there are always a large number of smart and capable people along with a few fanatics.

I have said this before, but it bears repeating:
The moral of this story is: If you find that you have an adversary, learn all you can about him. Get to know him. You may find that he has some admirable qualities that could be cultivated into a mutually advantageous friendship. If not, and he remains an antagonist, then you know better than to under or over-estimate his capabilities. And… if either you or your opponent throws down the gauntlet, neither should be surprised if and when it is picked up.

  74. UAW:

I agree with the concept of civil unions and marriages being on the same footing, marriages differing only in that they are performed in a religious context and civil unions not. But then we get into a tight spot with all those straight couples that opted for the justice of the peace (or the local equivalent) rather than the church wedding…. would this be a marriage because of mixed genders, or would they get to call it marriage because they are of mixed gender, but a couple of the same gender would not.

This is the tricky thing about equality… it has to be applied without condition, without exception.

Anyway, the cat’s out of the bag already. Many people don’t believe in mixed (race) marriages… so they don’t have to participate. If you don’t believe in same-sex marriage… marry someone of the opposite sex. It really is that simple. It’s as simple as ‘do unto others’ really.

“I believe the fact that an atheist, who doesn’t believe in God at all, is allowed to enter into the holy land of marriage while a gay Christian is not, shows that this law is arbitrary. Are we to believe that anyone who doesn’t live their life according to the King James Bible isn’t protected by the same laws that protect those who do? Using the same argument that I’ve seen on the 700 Club, that would mean that Jewish, Hindu, or Muslim weddings are also null and void.
I believe that to deny this right to the gay population is to say to them, “this god is not your god and he doesn’t love you.” There isn’t one person who is against gay marriage that can give me a reason why it shouldn’t be legal without bringing God or their religion into it.”

  86. Speaking of churches refusing to marry people. . .friends of mine (both lifelong church members but no longer members of an organized denomination) wanted to get married in a church – mostly for their parents’ sake. So they went and talked to a couple of places – the ministers were all for it – with provisions. My friends were well prepared for dealing with the provisions IF said provisions were reasonable. One church not only wanted them to be re-baptized but attend marriage counseling to make sure they were a “good fit” – this couple had been together for over 15 years, I think they were a good fit already – PLUS $1500 to rent the sanctuary. okay that’s a no-go. They ended up at an Episcopalian church where the rector was quite nice – and the only proviso was attendance at the church for a period of several weeks and two meetings with the rector to discuss the service which would be high church Anglican (to please the bride’s father) with some leeway for personalization. They could bring in their own musicians, etc. . . so they did that because they really liked the historical chapel. . . ONE week before the wedding, at the last meeting with the rector (and after paying deposits and coordinating everything) they were informed that they had “fulfilled” all the provisions and could now meet with the church’s wedding planner – at $250 an hour, 8 hours minimum charge. WTF??? They already had a wedding planner!!! but oh no. . .it was really all about the money for the church. . . so they ended up having the wedding at a local park overlooking a beautiful lake (and keeping their fingers crossed that the rain would stay away)and the wedding officiated by none other than my wundermom. . .the caterers and florist scrambled like crazy to adjust, the wedding planner had to rustle up tents and such. . .and the wedding invitations had to be redone and then HAND DELIVERED locally and all out of town guests rerouted. . . what a mess. . . It had nothing to do with conforming to faith or church membership or any value system and everything to do with money in the till for the churches… And the happy couple has remained a good fit for an additional 10 years now. . .

  87. I have said this before but it bears repeating. As it stands now my partner and I already can have a marriage or union recognized by a church – I have attended ceremonies at Unitarian, Unity, plus a couple of the more liberal protestant churches – but it is the “state” who refuses to recognize a legal contract between gay couples equal to that which is available to het people. Ironic, don’t you think, since the whole argument against gay marriage is because it supposedly offends God?

And that tired old canard about how gay people will bug churches who won’t have anything to do with them to perform a marriage ceremony is beyond stupid. There is absolutely no basis for that straw man argument because churches already exercize the right to refuse to marry people who don’t conform to their faith – the Catholic and Mormon churches being the ones that immediately come to mind. So stop with that bogus talking point already, please.

Jessee V said he’s for gay marriage…I’ve said I’m for civil unions…make civil unions have the same legalities as marriage but do not require the churches to perform the ceremony….I still think that “fanatics” on the GLTV side would try to sue the churches if they refused to perform the ceremony(the same “fanatics” that went into a church and disrupted the service….

Yes there are laws against polygamy… but.

Texas is home to one of the larger encampments of polygamists….. remember recent events when all the children were taken by the State? Southern Utah and Northern Arizona are full of towns that seem to cater to polygamists……. try a search for Colorado City, Arizona/Hildale, Utah. I’ve driven through Colorado City/Hildale (they stradle the state line) several times enroute to visit Mormon relatives in St. George, Utah….. beautiful country by the way.

And for the record, my great-grandparents on my father’s side were Morman pioneers in southern Colorado. So I’m not entirely ignorant when it comes to Mormons. As for me, I was raised Southern Baptist, which explains my distaste for organized religion these days!

Yes, there are laws against this, but most often heads are turned and they live their lives as if there were no law against polygamy. They suffer little ill-effect. And since they can’t legally marry all their wives, the father on many birth certificates is ‘unknown’ making state aid easily obtainable.

However, until recent years there were laws on the books against homosexual activity. As such one could legally be barred from housing, jobs and such as being a criminal element. It’s not been that long since section 21.06 of the Texas State Penal Code was declared unconstitutional… September of 2006, actually.

I’m now 52… a lot has changed in the last 35 years…. we move on as a country towards bigger and better futures, even given the debasement heaped upon us the last eight years.

Here’s a great hammer for ya. Look up your local League of Women Voters and join! There were many women in it that I never knew their party affiliation or candidate preferences. We studied the ISSUES! The pros and cons of national AND local problems. I was a member in both Massachusetts and California. There is strength in numbers!!!!!

    Example:

Some 40 years ago we tried like hell for YEARS to get mass transit going in the Los Angeles area. The engineering had been been done to put high speed trains in the median of the freeways, with stations and parking at the on/off ramps. Alleviate traffic and smog. But you know how people love to drive their cars to and from work, usually alone. Still do. This was way before environmental issues came up.

Once, we couldn’t get anyone to research the ‘con’ of the mass transit issue since our consensus was ‘pro’, so I was drafted to do the ‘con’. Shit! I did too good a job and the ‘con’ was passed at the local and district levels. Fortunately, tho, it was defeated at the state level.

But……..when it went to the voters in a proposition, it was voted down. Shit again.
But you keep trying. Sooner or later the public wakes up. Usually, later.

“Senator Norm Coleman today released the following statement in response to President Obama’s nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court:

“When debating judges, I was firm that I would use the same standard to evaluate judges under a Democrat President as I would a Republican President. Are they intellectually competent, do they have a record of integrity, and most importantly, are they committed to following the Constitution rather than creating new law and policy. When I am re-elected, I intend to review Judge Sotomayor’s record using this process. Certainly, the nomination of a Hispanic woman to the nation’s highest court is something all American’s should applaud.”

  146. Hi gang,

Yep. Greytdog called it. “Let the games begin!” with the donnybrook over the Supreme Court Justice nominee.

From what little I know and am learning about the lady, it seems to me that Sonia Sotomayor is eminently qualified for the job. Obama has once again demonstrated his wisdom and good judgment in this choice. I have faith is those qualities he has.

In addition, he exhibited political brilliance by appealing to two HUGE demographics for the Democrats in the next election two years from now and again in four years.

Naturally there are still a few male chauvanistic old fossils roaming around the halls of Congress that will dust off their tired old rhetoric. They are the ones who fervently believe that a woman’s place is in the home, barefoot and pregnant. Actually, their egos are very much intimidated by strong, intelligent women and have a compulsion to put them down whenever they can. If I remember correctly, in such cases Freud postulated something about early ‘improper potty training’.

Ah well, I have a hunch that wiser heads will prevail and Sotomayor will be confirmed.

    Aloha!

  147. Sherri & Keith – I’m just as confused as Jean – none of this makes sense to me – but then again, discrimination of any ilk makes no sense to me. I remain totally flabbergasted that people who claim to be American and claim to uphold so-called American values truly believe it is okay to discriminate against fellow humans. . . omigod! It makes my head reel (and no, despite some folks contention, I am not the runner up to Linda Blair in The Exorcist – she did a 360, I only can do a 180). But when a member of Congress puts forth the idea that a SCOTUS nominee may be unduly influenced by her gender and/or race (without equating anything similar to the white males on the court),and have that idea seen as legitimate, then I guess I am more sorrowed than shocked. But this day I have indeed written my representatives and senators in Congress, I have written the White House, I have written to that idiot Senator who spewed his fear-ridden racism, and I, for one, will not shut up and go quietly into the night. I don’t particularly like the word “eventually” – it smacks of “try” without having to do really accomplish anything. Eventually is a long time coming – and we’re out of time.

I appreciate your sentiment and conviction….. I’m a gay American. What baffles me is that we’re supposed to have separation of church and state. It’s the CHURCH that has said marriage is between a man and a woman. In the eyes of the state it’s simply a contract between two (hopefully) informed individuals. It has nothing to do with the downfall of religion…. they’re doing fine on their own without our help!

I’m not stressing over today’s ruling in California… the tide has already turned…. we’ve already won as far as I’m concerned. And once New Mexico follows suit (and we’ve become one of the more progressive states in the west) I hope to marry my life partner of five years…. who proudly served our country in the Marines durning the first Gulf War and is still dealing with the PTSD, but making great progress.

The vote in California to pass this idiocy was bought and paid for by the Morman Church. Yes, they can have as many wives as they want, children on welfare, but I can’t have my Marine? It’s an even sadder day when the Supreme Court votes to discriminate against a minority of citizens.

Courts are supposed to protect all citizens and make sure all people are treated equally under the law. Today, the California State Supreme Court voted to uphold Prop 8, which means same-sex couples are banned from civil marriage in CA.

We should be shocked, angered, and shamed. We should also be more determined than ever to stand fearlessly and actively for equality for all citizens.

I hope everyone reading this will protest Prop 8 by taking action — just do one thing in the next 48 hours for marriage equality for same-sex couples. Write a letter to your editor, your Senator, your Assemblymember, a family member, a local news channel, make a donation to the Courage Campaign or to Freedom to Marry…..do something! Minorities have NEVER gained equality and civil rights without the help and support of the majority!

Susan, no, the stationary bike is at the PT facility. You gave me an idea tho. I always have a book or two in the works. Next time I’ll take one. Even ten minutes of reading would relieve the boredom.

Grandma Katie and Greytdog, I don’t know much about either PT or deep tissue massage. No experience with them. I think I may be getting some deep tissue massage in conjunction with the PT. The young man is very sweet and gentle. But he does work on my left thigh and calf with massage. He finds knots of muscles where I didn’t know muscles existed!

I’ll admit I do like the Ultra-sound and Electric Stimulation. Ummmmm, delicious! Very soothing and of course PASSIVE! I don’t have to do anything but just lay there and relax.

I am adverse to plain old exercises. Always have been. But I am doing them faithfully twice a day at home. Snarl.

In early June, I should be starting epidural steroid shots smack into my spine. Oh, yeah! That should be lots of fun. Still, it beats spinal surgery that even the surgeon admits is not always successful. As long as I can function – more or less – I’ll adjust accordingly.

In Bavaria a famous dog is the Dackel (Teckel, hotdog dog) So one of our more famous Comedians (Karl Valentine, turn of the last Century) told this story:

One day I go for a walk with my Dackel, along comes a “Preiss” (Prussian, anyone from Germany, north of Bavaria) and my Dackel bites him in the ankle, well, what you guess, the Preiss starts screaming and shouting about being bitten by my Dackel in the ankle…..

So I said to him: What the heck are you complainging about being bitten in the ankle?

you sure give Dick hell for his deferments but…

It was 1959 when Dick Cheney, then a student at Yale University, turned 18 and became eligible for the draft.

“Eventually, like 16 million other young men of that era, Mr. Cheney sought deferments. By the time he turned 26 in January 1967 and was no longer eligible for the draft, he had asked for and received five deferments, four because he was a student and one for being a new father.” ……”The numbers for US troops deployed to Viet Nam during the same period were quite different; 2,000 in 1961, rising rapidly to 16,500 in 1964.”……

and add a cork (we all DO drink wine? Or Cidre?)
and send it to the Dick’s office (maybe include directions on how to recycle corks propperly, I guess he even wouldn’t know THAT! 😉 ), make it a puiblic campaign…..? What ya think?

  207. On this Memorial Day, we need to consider why we went to war. Some wars can be justified some can’t.

Iraq cannot be justified! As we get more information, we find out that the torture was needed to make a connection between terrorists and Saddam. Bush started office looking for a reason to take out Saddam. I, personally, think it was for oil.

I just read where Bush and friends had a plan for giving the oil reserves to friends and allies before 9/11.

When 9/11 happened, war was inevitable to make their pre-existing war desires come true.

Afghanistan: What a mess today! The war there could have been started and finished had we not gone into Iraq.

5000 Needless American Deaths: The war in Iraq has caused 5000 soldiers to die. Cheney and Bush should hang their heads for pushing this needless war. (Iraq has lost a lot of people too.)

War is serious business which results in death and we should not make up facts (or torture) to force an unwarranted war.

I think we need an Independent Investigation.

    Memorial Day
    By Nick Russell
    http://gypsyjournal.net/blog/2009/05/25/memorial-day/#comments

I hope you take a moment today to remember what this holiday is for. To me, it is one of the most sacred days of the year, because I have seen what it is about first hand.

Memorial Day is not about automobile races, or cooking hotdogs on the grill, or getting a three day weekend, or the inconvenience of the post office being closed when you want to mail a letter.

It is a day to remember the men and women who have given us the most precious gift of all, our very freedom, and who paid for it with their lives. We forget that too easily in this country. And we need to remember.

We need to remember that all of those headstones decorated with little American flags in all of those cemeteries across this great land of ours represent somebody’s son, somebody’s brother, somebody’s father. Somebody who put on a uniform for you and for me, and never came home.

Men like my uncle Charles Saxton, my mother’s younger brother. I never knew him, because he was killed in action on August 7, 1943 while serving with the 9th Infantry Division in North Africa. My uncle was just 25 years old when he died.

Men like my high school friend Larry Greene. Larry was an absolute goofball who I could always depend on to get me into trouble with some nonsense or other. He died in 1972 when his helicopter was shot out of the sky over Vietnam.

Men like my buddy Brad Pettit, who slogged through miles of rice paddies and jungle trails with me until we got in a firefight one day and a bullet hit him as he was laying beside me returning fire.

Men like a new kid who stepped on a mine on his very first day in the field with us. I held his hand and looked in his eyes and tried to tell him it was going to be okay, because I couldn’t look at what was left of his body below the waist. I hope I gave him some comfort in his last minutes, but I can still see his eyes as they went blank, and I am haunted to this day because I never knew his name. That is what this day is about.

Please remember that right now, as you are reading this with your morning coffee, or during a commercial break in your favorite television show, somebody’s son or daughter, somebody’s brother or sister, somebody’s husband or wife, is in the enemy’s gunsights. Somewhere today or tomorrow or next week, some mother or father or wife will answer a knock on their door and find solemn men in uniform there to deliver the very worst news of all. That is what this day is about.

    Thought for the Day
“A veteran – whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve – is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the ‘United States of America’ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.’” (Author unknown)

Just wondering, on this Memorial Day, since DODT is still military policy, how many of those lying in graves under white markers throughout this country and the world, sacrificed their lives for freedom despite the fact our country hates them, fears them, devalues them, and marginalizes them still? 218. Hi gang, Grandma Katie and Whirled Peas,

I guess we pretty well settled the question of how everyone here feels about Cheney, not that he would care if he knew. But word does get around. Maybe he has heard. Would any of it penetrate? Naw.

Those of you who know my story understand that for me Memorial Day is a quiet, private time of remembrance and reflection.

I thought I would give you an update on my adventures in Physical Therapy. Grandma Katie, maybe you can relate. I don’t know if I am getting any better because of all the time and effort I am putting into it, but at least I’m not getting any worse. Is that progress????? I’m an aesthete, not an athlete! One thing I have learned is to REALLY, REALLY, REALLY loathe that damn stationary bike. That’s the longest 10 minutes in the history of mankind.

A dear sympathetic friend sent me this e mail so I’m sharing it with you. Look, Brudda Whirled Peas!!! I squeezed an e mail into M&H’s teensy-weensy comment box all by myself. Whoopee!!!

    Importance of Walking.

    1. Walking 20 minutes can add to your life. This enables you at 90 years of age to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.

    2. My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 years old and we haven’t a clue where the hell he is.

    3. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

    4. The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

    5. I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing.

    6. I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven’t lost a pound…apparently you have to actually go there.

    7. Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

    8. I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

    9. The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say, “Well, she looks good doesn’t she.”

    10. If you are going to try cross-countryskiing, start with a small country.

    11. I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years. Just getting over the hill was enough.

    12. We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our skulls.

AND 13. Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a Happy Hour.
By the time I leave, I look just fine.

You could run this over to your friends……But just e-mail it to them!

    Aloha!

    Haddock of Mass Destruction
    Brain bored and arse numb
Finally the blades spun and we lifted
Skimmed the palm trees and popped flares above the Euphrates
We swooped low over the target truck
    Then landed in its path
We charged in our Storm Trooper costumes
Blinding faceless shapes through dirty glass
    With rifle mounted lasers
    We were jumpy
    We were ready
I dragged the driver from his seat
Slammed his face into hot tarmac
Held it there with my suede boot
Steadied my hands long enough to cuff his
    We searched his packed pick-up
Boxes stacked four deep five wide
Emptied in the dust on the roadside
The first box revealed ice and fish, and the next
And the next, and the last
Intelligence had said he was armed and dangerous
Armed with melting ice and defrosting cod
No match for our guns, our bombs,
    Our good intentions, our morals
    Our God
We cut his cuffs, and his wife’s
And left them to their ruined stock
    I should demand commission
    From the Taliban
For every recruit I’ve converted to their flock.

It’s time for Cheney’s comeuppance and I sincerely hope President Obama comes to his senses and backs a full investigation of the entire Cheney administration — because we all know now that junior wasn’t running anything. If Saddam was fit to be hung for his crimes then Cheney should certainly swing from a rope too. That’s one cell phone video I’d love to see.

  265. Thank you, Helen, for once again calling a spade a spade. Most of the TV toadies seem disinclined to do so, trying to create a “debate” where there is none. A war criminal versus the first fairly-elected US President in eight years … there is simply no comparison.

Thanks also to Keith upthread for the Conason link. Of course, the fearmonger-in-chief is speaking out. He is trying desperately to distract. From the Conason article:

[…] Aside from distorting Obama’s rhetoric to fit a false liberal stereotype, the former vice president simply lied about the aims and conduct of the abusive interrogations he approved. “From the beginning of the program,” he claimed, “there was only one focused and all-important purpose. We sought, and we in fact obtained, specific information on terrorist plans.” But we now know that there was certainly at least one other purpose that was of great importance to Cheney: namely, the effort to find (or coerce confessions about) the mythical connection between al-Qaida and the Saddam Hussein dictatorship. Mindful of that damning fact, he barely dared to mention the war in Iraq.[…]

The fact remains that this zealot was in charge when 9-11 occurred, although the administration had clearly been warned about exactly such an event in advance and deliberately ignored the warnings of Sandy Berger as far back as Dec 2000 in addition to those of the very knowledgeable and able Richard Clarke.

If I did support “enhanced interrogation techniques” (torture by any other name is still torture) … which I do not under any circumstances … I could consider favoring their use to find out exactly what Cheney knew about 9-11 before it happened … and why. But as most realize (chickenhawk cowards like Cheney and his ilk excepted), torture doesn’t elicit the truth … it just elicits something, anything … to make the torturers stop.

We would not even be having this manufactured “debate” if those imprisoned and tortured had been of Western European nationalities or of a different religion. Those facts are glaringly evident. If we ourselves do not bring the wrongdoers to account, and so far, this President seems disinclined to do so (I’m giving him a pass so far because he inherited nothing but disaster from Bush-Cheney, but …), there will be other mechanisms that do. And, if we do leave the “dirty work” to others, that will simply put the seal on our national shame and expose forever that while we preach the rule of law, we do not practice it.

But they didn’t stay around in their previously-comfortable lives, enriching themselves while their contemporaries were shipped off to die.

We can always count on you to once again come up with a post that drives home the points with your usual succinct wit. I do disagree about one of them however.

Let Cheney go ahead and spout off to anyone he can get to listen to him. (Not me!) Hopefully, he will talk himself and some of his buddies right into The Hague. Besides that, he continues to sink the GOP. That should make Obama a shoe-in for four more years in the next election. It is going to take at least eight years to clean up the messes left.

It is becoming more and more clear who the OTHER unelected president was under Bush, Inc., since Bush himself is remaining ever so quiet. Bush was way to dumb to be the ‘decider’.

  287. Yeah, I can’t believe how much Dick I’m seeing in the media these days. I’ve never liked him, but I liked him much more when he stayed in his bunker at an “undisclosed location.”

W claimed he was so dedicated to counter terrorism that he gave that responsibility to the number 2 guy, but as usual, W made a lousy decision. Dick had no experience and less interest. He never even had a counter terrorism meeting until after we were attacked.

And everyone I’ve heard who was waterboarded (voluntarily) says yes, it’s torture. Ventura did it in SERE School as part of his training (to prepare him to endure torture–duh!) The guy who ran the SERE school, been on the doing and receiving end, says it’s torture. Conservatives Hitchens and Mancow didn’t think it was torture so they tried it to “prove” it was no big deal, and they both said, yes, it’s torture. Dick, not a soldier, (but he does play with guns to shoot animals in enclosed places and hits his friend instead), says it’s not torture and advocates its use, even tho all his military advisers say that using it almost guarantees that torture will be used against OUR soldiers. But Dick doesn’t care about them. He only cares about his own “legacy.”

Never heard of a man more aptly named. What a DICK.

But I don’t understand how it is he is so powerful in the first place? He doesn’t have a stellar career. He must know a lot of dirt on a lot of people who are afraid he’ll write a tell-all if they don’t cow to his his every wish and shim.

If you listen to the soundbites playing on every news channel, all the Rep. talking heads – Limbaugh, Tom Ridge, McCain, Liz Cheney, etc. – keep calling him the VP. They don’t say the “former VP” — I think the Republicans just can’t face the fact that they are no longer in the White House or in the Senate majority. They think if they just keep talking as if they are in charge, they can still control policies and actions. It’s going to be a l–o–n–g eight years for them!

They would have fun and show the world that it really is no big deal. I think they should do it at least 5 times in 24 hours to prove to the world that it is not torture.

Rich: Like your idea of Cheney talking. Just keep the cameras rolling whenever he talks. Liz Cheney – She would like a little waterboarding too I bet. She sure talks brave.

Cheney’s IRAQ WAR has cost 5000 American lives. Cheney’s ideas killed Americans.

He denigrated the service of our military when he was avoiding that service, but now, he claims have been an avid supporter (easy now, since he can’t be called up!). I’d love for him and his fellow chicken-hawks to be required to serve before they can make any more comments about the war – can’t you just imagine him and the Rush in uniform, squealing like pigs when placed in harm’s way?

I still admire John McCain and his real tradition of service – did you see that his grandson just graduated from Annapolis – the fourth John McCain to do so? But I stand by my disdain for his sell-out prior to elections.

The Dick should be quiet or be water-boarded. He shouldn’t object, as he says it isn’t torture.

  300. Good Post Helen. I can’t believe we keep giving this guy all this press. He is saying the same things everywhere he goes on this campaign to justify his actions. I guess he believes if you say the same thing over and over and over to enough people, it somehow becomes credible. But alas, I’m sure some are indeed persuaded.

All his irresponsible accusations asserting that we are less safe now with this new administration and their policies. He keeps referring to 9/11 like it was an unavoidable act of God that put us in the position of “anything goes” to protect ourselves from others. 9/11 was on his watch after all. He won’t admit to that.

He doesn’t see his failings or actions (or inactions) as having assisted in bringing that act of terror upon us. George was the new kid on the block – Cheney wasn’t. Too busy with his agenda to pay attention, I’m sure. What other explanation can there be for his recent all-out campaign? Fear of prosecution – or guilt, maybe?

What a terrible human being. I say let him cut his own throat. Let him keep talking, like Rich said: “Give him ‘nuff rope.” Maybe God will smite him on the podium. Now that would be something to see…

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/226/story/68643.html

Sometimes we know we hate what a public person stands for, but it is hard to articulate exactly why. Read this article for help along that line. It is very specific.

I see today that Cheney is actively pursuing a book deal. Others in punditry have floated the notion that Cheny is scared of future prosecution here and abroad for war crimes. In other words his current spate of TV appearances are not (perhaps) because of convictions as much as because of fear.

I have read recently a pretty good review and analysis of Cheney’s actions post 9/11 (which link I cannot recover, sorry) which maintains that he was mortified by his failure to prevent that attack and fearful of being killed. Apparently he carried a hazmat suit with him for awhile.

At any rate his actions are probably pathological and therefore, he won’t shut up as long as he remains afraid. “I think part of this dance is to stay in front of the hangman.” I think Jacqui is right on this. I don’t think he is fronting for Bush, though. I think he is worried about himself.

The leopards do not change their spots. Cheney and the Republicans are the same fear, war and hate mongers they have always been.

And, that lesbian daughter, whose sexual persuesion THE DICK hates, is now out on all the TV and radio networks who are stupid enough to have her , saying that the factual papers and the people who wrote them are trying to re-write history. WTF !!!! The Cheney’s are desperately trying to rewrite history to keep THE DICK from sitting in a cell for the rest of his life.

Same ole, same ole with those people. If you tell the same lies enough times then the ignorant people will believe them…….fortunately we are down to 21% ignorant. Poor foolish, pathetic DICK !!!!!

As for the fool senator from South Dakota and his fear that the detainees will be dropped off on the corner by his house……..JGA!!! There sure is a lot of stupid going on with the elected official from the Repub party. Maybe they should let the idiot Texas gov ( sorry Helen, you’ll have to move to Maine) secede and then drop the detainees off on his corner. Or when Cheney moves to his house in Dubai to escape a trial and take over the reins of Halliburton, again, we can drop the detainees off with THE DICK.

Colorado’s Super Max is housing foreign and domestic terrorists……….newsflash: they are still there, no one is afraid of them and they are not opening up ice cream stands on every corner.
