Harold isn’t Muslim. He’s Catholic. I’m Methodist. Somehow we’ve managed to live peacefully married for 57 years. We didn’t get married in the church. As far as I am concerned that was no great loss. A short ceremony meant I got to eat cake sooner.
And just like Harold, Barack Hussein Obama isn’t a Muslim either… unless of course you attend a McCain rally where they think he’s either Muslim, a terrorist sympathizer, or not a United States citizen. Most recently they are calling him a socialist. They probably think that is some type of religion too. Smart ones those McCain supporters. One week they want to beat him up for something Rev. Wright said and the next week they want to hate him for being Muslim. For crying out loud people, he’s Christian. But exactly what would be the issue if he were a Muslim?
There are 2.1 billion Christians in the world today, and almost half of those are Catholic. There are also 1.5 billion who practice Islam. And there are almost 3 billion people in the world who don’t belong to either of the aforementioned groups, including about 1.1billion (that’s billion with a B) who consider themselves to be secular or nonreligious. And guess what folks? There are good and bad in each group. Let’s take the Republican base for example…
Just because you go to church doesn’t mean your shit doesn’t stink. Just ask Joe the Plumber. Pray when you want, to whomever you want, wherever you want. That is what is so great about our country. But remember, freedom of religion is a double edged plunger. When you start attacking people from a different religion, you open the door to people who attack you because they think their religion is better than your religion. And while we are on the subject of people who think their religion is better than your religion have you paid attention to what Governor Palin believes?
Palin has called on people to pray for the cooperation necessary to build a natural gas pipeline across Alaska, referred to the U.S. mission in Iraq a “task that is from God” and argued that students should be taught creationism in public schools. She would rather do away with sex education all together. As an evangelical of the Pentecostal persuasion, she supports a strict adherence to moral codes- no tobacco, no alcohol, no sex outside of marriage… well two out of three ain’t bad anyway. Oh gosh, there I go throwing stones while living in a glass house.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have an issue with her being a religious woman. I just have concerns with her ability to understand the diversity of the world today. Imagine what decisions you might make if you believe the end of days is on tomorrow’s menu. You’d probably still order breakfast, but you just might consider things like conserving natural resources to be irrelevant. Drill, drill, drill. After all, what would be the point in saving the earth?
I can’t say I know when the end of days will be, but one thing I know for sure: When religion gets in bed with politics, we all wake up with regrets. Well, except of course for Sarah Palin.

I truly believe, if there is a God, that he wants no part of any of the man-made religions on this earth nor does he want to be the center of our politcal games. Thanks again, Helen. So many people try to “defend” Obama by saying “He’s not a Muslim! He’s a good man and a Christian!” When really they should be saying, “He’s not a Muslim, but there’s nothing wrong with it either way.”
People are so ignorant of Islam, they don’t even realize how close it is to Christianity. Which is also very similar to Judaism. They all started in the same place, teach the same basic morals and even tell some of the same stories. They just present through different “prophets”. Why does one religion have to be “right”? Why can’t these 3 just be 3 versions of the same perception of truth?
Me, I am agnostic. But I give no disrespect to the religious, just as I would hope they treat me. We all need to find our own answers and some things make more sense to some people. Someone’s religion doesn’t really tell much about who they are as a person. Religious people have done wicked things and non-religious have done good & “saint-like” things. I know that bringing Nazis into the mix will usually negate an argument- but they are Christians too. Religion is only what you make of it. And besides, an intolerant Christian is hardly in-keeping with the word of Christ, are they?

One of my friends has a saying “Going to church makes you no more of a Christian than sitting in my garage makes me a car.” While I won’t fall into the trap of saying that Palin is or isn’t a Christian (because I don’t know her personally and I actually put stock in the whole “Judge not” spiel), I *will* say that her god and my god probably don’t see eye to eye very often.
While I’m too young to have lived through the Red Scare, I’ve got to say that the attempts to smear Obama using the Muslim label really reek of McCarthy’s methods. I, for one, am tired of that particular smell.

Let’s try a thought experiment. Say John McCain attended a party at which known racists and terror mongers were in attendance. Say testimonials were given, including a glowing one by McCain for the benefit of the guest of honor … who happened to be a top apologist for terrorists. Say McCain not only gave a speech but stood by, in tacit approval and solidarity, while other racists and terror mongers gave speeches that reeked of hatred for an American ally and rationalizations of terror attacks.
Now let’s say the Los Angeles Times obtained a videotape of the party.
Question: Is there any chance — any chance — the Times would not release the tape and publish front-page story after story about the gory details, with the usual accompanying chorus of sanctimony from the oped commentariat? Is there any chance, if the Times was the least bit reluctant about publishing (remember, we’re pretending here), that the rest of the mainstream media (y’know, the guys who drove Trent Lott out of his leadership position over a birthday-party toast) would not be screaming for the release of the tape?
Do we really have to ask?
So now, let’s leave thought experiments and return to reality: Why is the Los Angeles Times sitting on a videotape of the 2003 farewell bash in Chicago at which Barack Obama lavished praise on the guest of honor, Rashid Khalidi — former mouthpiece for master terrorist Yasser Arafat?
At the time Khalidi, a PLO adviser turned University of Chicago professor, was headed east to Columbia. There he would take over the University’s Middle East-studies program (which he has since maintained as a bubbling cauldron of anti-Semitism) and assume the professorship endowed in honor of Edward Sayyid, another notorious terror apologist.
The party featured encomiums by many of Khalidi’s allies, colleagues, and friends, including Barack Obama, then an Illinois state senator, and Bill Ayers, the terrorist turned education professor. It was sponsored by the Arab American Action Network (AAAN), which had been founded by Khalidi and his wife, Mona, formerly a top English translator for Arafat’s press agency.
Is there just a teeny-weenie chance that this was an evening of Israel-bashing Obama would find very difficult to explain? Could it be that the Times, a pillar of the Obamedia, is covering for its guy?
Gateway Pundit reports that the Times has the videotape but is suppressing it.
Back in April, the Times published a gentle story about the fete. Reporter Peter Wallsten avoided, for example, any mention of the inconvenient fact that the revelers included Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, Ayers’s wife and fellow Weatherman terrorist. These self-professed revolutionary Leftists are friendly with both Obama and Khalidi — indeed, researcher Stanley Kurtz has noted that Ayers and Khalidi were “best friends.” (And — small world! — it turns out that the Obamas are extremely close to the Khalidis, who have reportedly babysat the Obama children.)
Nor did the Times report the party was thrown by AAAN. Wallsten does tell us that the AAAN received grants from the Leftist Woods Fund when Obama was on its board — but, besides understating the amount (it was $75,000, not $40,000), the Times mentions neither that Ayers was also on the Woods board at the time nor that AAAN is rabidly anti-Israel. (Though the organization regards Israel as illegitimate and has sought to justify Palestinian terrorism, Wallsten describes the AAAN as “a social service group.”)
Perhaps even more inconveniently, the Times also let slip that it had obtained a videotape of the party.
Wallsten’s story is worth excerpting at length (italics are mine):
It was a celebration of Palestinian culture — a night of music, dancing and a dash of politics. Local Arab Americans were bidding farewell to Rashid Khalidi, an internationally known scholar, critic of Israel and advocate for Palestinian rights, who was leaving town for a job in New York.
A special tribute came from Khalidi’s friend and frequent dinner companion, the young state Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi’s wife, Mona, and conversations that had challenged his thinking.
His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been “consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases. . . . It’s for that reason that I’m hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation — a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid’s dinner table,” but around “this entire world.”…
[T]he warm embrace Obama gave to Khalidi, and words like those at the professor’s going-away party, have left some Palestinian American leaders believing that Obama is more receptive to their viewpoint than he is willing to say.
Their belief is not drawn from Obama’s speeches or campaign literature, but from comments that some say Obama made in private and from his association with the Palestinian American community in his hometown of Chicago, including his presence at events where anger at Israeli and U.S. Middle East policy was freely expressed.
At Khalidi’s 2003 farewell party, for example, a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, “then you will never see a day of peace.”
One speaker likened “Zionist settlers on the West Bank” to Osama bin Laden, saying both had been “blinded by ideology.”
Obama adopted a different tone in his comments and called for finding common ground. But his presence at such events, as he worked to build a political base in Chicago, has led some Palestinian leaders to believe that he might deal differently with the Middle East than … his opponents for the White House….
At Khalidi’s going-away party in 2003, the scholar lavished praise on Obama, telling the mostly Palestinian American crowd that the state senator deserved their help in winning a U.S. Senate seat. “You will not have a better senator under any circumstances,” Khalidi said.
The event was videotaped, and a copy of the tape was obtained by The Times.
Though Khalidi has seen little of Sen. Obama in recent years, Michelle Obama attended a party several months ago celebrating the marriage of the Khalidis’ daughter.
In interviews with The Times, Khalidi declined to discuss specifics of private talks over the years with Obama. He did not begrudge his friend for being out of touch, or for focusing more these days on his support for Israel — a stance that Khalidi calls a requirement to win a national election in the U.S., just as wooing Chicago’s large Arab American community was important for winning local elections.
So why is the Times sitting on the videotape of the Khalidi festivities? Given Obama’s (preposterous) claims that he didn’t know Ayers that well and was unfamiliar with Ayers’s views, why didn’t the Times report that Ayers and Dohrn were at the bash? Was it not worth mentioning the remarkable coincidence that both Obama and Ayers — the “education reform” allies who barely know each other … except to the extent they together doled out tens of millions of dollars to Leftist agitators, attacked the criminal justice system, and raved about each others books — just happen to be intimate friends of the same anti-American Israel-basher? (Despite having watched the videotape, Wallsten told Gateway Pundit he “did not know” whether Ayers was there.)
Why won’t the Times tell us what was said in the various Khalidi testimonials? On that score, Ayers and Dohrn have always had characteristically noxious views on the Israeli/Palestinian dispute. And, true to form, they have always been quite open about them. There is no reason to believe those views have ever changed. Here, for example, is what they had to say in Prairie Fire, the Weather Underground’s 1974 Communist manifesto (emphasis in original):
Palestinian independence is opposed with reactionary schemes by Jordan, completely opposed with military terror by Israel, and manipulated by the U.S. The U.S.-sponsored notion of stability and status-quo in the Mideast is an attempt to preserve U.S. imperialist control of oil, using zionist power as the cat’s paw. The Mideast has become a world focus of struggles over oil resources and control of strategic sea and air routes. Yet the Palestinian struggle is at the heart of other conflicts in the Mideast. Only the Palestinians can determine the solution which reflects the aspirations of the Palestinian people. No “settlements” in the Mideast which exclude the Palestinians will resolve the conflict. Palestinian liberation will not be suppressed.
The U.S. people have been seriously deceived about the Palestinians and Israel. This calls for a campaign to educate and focus attention on the true situation: teach-ins, debates, and open clear support for Palestinian liberation; reading about the Palestinian movement—The Disinherited by Fawaz Turki, Enemy of the Sun; opposing U.S. aid to Israel. Our silence or acceptance of pro-zionist policy is a form of complicity with U.S.-backed aggression and terror, and a betrayal of internationalism.
SELF-DETERMINATION FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE!
U.S. OUT OF THE MIDEAST!
END AID TO ISRAEL!
Barack Obama wouldn’t possibly let something like that pass without a spirited defense of the Israel he tells us he so staunchly supports … would he? I guess to answer that question, we’d have to know what was on the tape.

Just stumbled across your blog. Love it! How refreshing to hear your progressive views. My husband and I support Obama and pay attention to the issues. I was brought up Congregationalist and he’s a Jew. Our kids are a bit confused, but we teach them about being good people, first and foremost. We show them that two people – from completely different religious backgrounds – can find true love and peace together. I no longer can align myself with the Christian religion based on the intolerance of others that is often preached. I write a humor blog as well. Hope you’ll stop by and hopefully have a laugh.

THis is the same tripe that Osama bin Laden pulled in ’04 with his “endorsement” of Kerry. If you’re going to “endorse” an “enemy” politician, you want to pick the guy you DON’T want, because the stupid people are going to vote for the OTHER GUY, just because you endorsed him! My father, an Episcopalian minister, suggested to me as a boy, that “..Religion is what we use as self-government. It is something that is about you; not others”. Good advice.
Those that disparage against other beliefs are simply avoiding their individual responsibility to themselves and subsequently to everyone else.
I suggest that this says more about a lot of pastors and their inferiority complexes. They become the rabble-rousers of the ignorant.

I’m a NH voter who has had an Obama sign in our yard since before our primary (and had 2 stolen)–I’m SO thrilled it looks like he’ll make it into the White House.

Not to be stereotypical, but my mother always looked for the doctor that had the foreign name or was from another country because she believed they was the best doctors. The reason she believed this is she always respected the work and study ethics of foreign countries. I too sometimes use this tactic to look for a doctor. So, it seems that people today at times do not look at the broader picture. They feel that someone is always out to get them. I appreciate the words of wisdom. I will always be true to who I am, an African-American man with a lot of Irish heritage, lol. That will always love my mom and love what she gave me.

Speaking of Joe the Plumber – while listening to the news programs today the Rush Limbaughs etc are blaming the “Dems” for Poor Joe loosing his job and can’t get work and/or buy the company he said he wanted to buy. But as I recall it was John McCain who brought Joe the Plumber into the national spot light (and under the microscope of the media) when he mentioned him in the last Debate. Rush/Rushbo Limbaugh the “Dems” did not bring him up MCain did that!!!! Good old fair and balanced rushbo also refered to Dan Rather as Dan Blather (but he profess that the Republicans are being portrayed as spreading hate and disrespect) Go figure.

Something occurred to me today, as I was thinking about my grandma who passed a few years ago – she was about 5 years older than you, and she also lived through the depression and WWII –
We are teetering on the edge of another potential abyss – and being a student of history, I remember that in the 1930’s, we had FDR, and WPA. Germany had Hitler and the ‘we hate *them* is *their fault*’ ideology. Seems like you could really liken Obama/Biden to FDR and McCain/Palin to Hitler becuase of the way they stir the pot with hatred and violent thinking.
I hope America takes this into consideration in the voting booth….our country’s future depends on it.

Just found out about your blog recently, and I enjoy it very much.
I share your concerns about Sarah Palin’s sheltered life. It’s not just the shelter of her religion, but also the fact that she hasn’t traveled very much and thinks that small towns are more “pro-American” than the cities – where about 80% of Americans actually live. I can’t really figure out how America has lasted as long as it has with a population that is %80 anti-American.
But it’s not true that Palin said that the invasion of Iraq was a “task from God”. I believe the video in question is this one:
It’s clear to me that Palin is suggesting here that they should all pray that the war is God’s plan – pray for guidance to do the right thing, that is. Just thought I’d try to clear that up.

Eric, I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Despite the fact that we are such a diverse country, there are still pockets of people who are very suspicious of anything that varies from their norm. My husband was adopted by his mother’s second husband who is Palestinian, so he has an Arabic last name and middle name. He already had an unusual first name, so people are generally suspicious of exactly what he is when they hear his name. Add to this that he is a physician, and immediately it is assumed that he is a foreign-born doctor. When he set up his practice 24 years ago, the first question was always “does he speak English?” But the most telling and disheartening thing was the reaction of some people when they met him, that almost audible sigh of relief when they found out that he was a white man, and a pretty pasty one at that. Well, we just rolled with it, using humor as our biggest ally. He is one of the most sought after physicians in our state with a loyal, mostly blue collar, patient population. You will always find some scared idiot that won’t be able to accept you. Just remain true to who you are…

Hey, I like your posts, I was an unemployed college graduate, now an underpaid college graduate who admits that I can still learn a lot from aged wisdom. So, don’t worry, society as well as I still needs older wisdowm and you are proof of that. I could not say everything that you have said any better.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am from a divorced family of a mother that is white and a father that is black. They divorced when I was 1 1/2 years old. Had a good relationship with both my mother and father. If asked, I would normally say that I am black, however not ashamed of my mother I would admit and embrace my mothers side without any humiliation. However my mothers side is not what I am reminded of when I go out into the real world. I am reminded of my black side; reality check, black is what the outside world sees of me. However, I do not hold this as a crutch. I simply do not make excuses of myself because I blame racism. I look beyond that. Speaking from the history of myself that I just gave you, I am going to rant a little bit. I am tired of the racism in this race. Not only racism, just different types of classification being noticed in this race. From black to white, to male and female, and as well as old and young. I mean, it seems that every time I get online, I see people saying that it is not American to have anything but a white president. As well as the media talking about the black effect the true outcomes of this election or how blacks vs. women. It seems the media makes more tension than need be. The most recent is when Colin Powell said he was going to vote for Barack Obama. Than Rush Limbaugh, the radio talk show host, went on air and said it was because he was voting for a black man. I would just like to hear your feelings on this matter, and see if you agree with me, everyone please stick to the real issues and facts. I believe your wisdom would inspire me with more enlightment through all this muckery we call an election year we will never forget. Sorry for rambling on, and I wanted to appreciate you for reading my long comment.

Tolerance definitely is one of the most overlooked traits of a sincere religious life. People treat religion like a badge or identity and forget that it’s about becoming someone better.
That’s why I became a Buddhist at 16. I just couldn’t swallow the usual line about being saved and to heck with the others. 😦 Buddhism is all about “us” as in all of us. 🙂

Indeed, Helen. Why is it that the citizenry of this country doesn’t remember the idea of separation of Church and State?
I wouldn’t care if someone painted a face on a tomato, called it Skippy, and prayed to it. If that is what fed their soul and gave them a sense of peace, hey, more power to them.
What bothers me about religion is that it is creeping back into facets of our society in which it doesn’t belong. I don’t want my politics run by God. We’ve seen how president numb nuts has done with that.

McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate certainly puts his judgment into question. The very idea of the ‘Alaskan Airhead’ being anywhere near the White House, let alone possibly occupying the presidential chair in the Oval Office, scares the hell out of me!
We retired out here in Hawaii 18 years ago. We have been married 55 years and are starting to get the hang of this marriage thing. We run around in shorts, tank tops and Zoris (flipflops) year round. If we had done that in Pennsylvania and Massachsetts where we previously lived, we would have frozen to death!
We are all products of geography and climate. The way we dress, the food we eat and how we think and feel about the issues of the day. If we had been born of Hindu parents in Bombay, India or of Muslim parents in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia, we would no doubt be quite different. Not wrong. Just different. If we are not happy with our cultural heritage, we didn’t do a very good job of choosing our ancestors.
But since the vast majority of us in the United States were raised in the Judeo-Christian tradition, that is our way of life without giving it much thought. Our home gives us a sense of stability and our zone of comfort. The Puritan Ethic has been a very strong influence. That’s fine. A church congregation also gives us membership in an extended family. That’s fine too as long as we don’t feel as if we have to shove our beliefs down everybody else’s throat.
This business of taking the literal interpretation of the Bible needs to be examined however. I don’t pretend to be a biblical scholar. I have not read it in its entirety. I got bogged down in all the ‘begets’ in Leviticus or Deuteronomy or something.
Abraham was the great-great-great-to-the-nth-degree-grandfather of all three major religions in Western Civilization; Judiasm, Christianity and Islam. For heaven’s sake, talk about your sibling rivalry! The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, the New Testament in Greek. They have gone through a number of translations. Now, if you have ever tried to translate anything, it is brutal. First you have to learn the other language!
You don’t have to take my word for any of this. You can look it up yourself.
One example is in the English translation of the Douay Version. It is generally considered the Catholic Bible.
Exodus 22:18. “Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live.”
The same verse in the English translation of the Protestant King James Version:
Exodus 22:18. “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.”
If the gender is changed, what do you get? The hysteria of religious fanaticism in hanging witches in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692.

Remember: The religious right is neither.
The strength of this country is the SEPARATION of RELIGION and GOVERNMENT. There is room for everyone here because those rich, male, land-owning and brilliant men cared to bestow on us all over 200 years ago. We did it badly for a while and it’s still not perfect, but it’s the best on the planet so far. Let us not carelessly or stupidly lose it. If you’ve never read the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, and The Constitution, do so.
If you never had a class on how the government is supposed to work, look it up and learn for yourself! If you had the class, remember what you learned! What you’ve seen in the last 8 years isn’t it. The branches of government are supposed to check and balance each other, not rubber stamp everything the executive branch says.

Yesterday Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama. And BECAUSE of the religion thing! He said what is wrong if Obama were a Muslim? Nothing. That is the problem with the religious zealots in this country. Thinking it’s all about them.

I’m not a Christian so I haven’t studied the teachings of Jesus. But what I’ve picked up is that he wanted people to be tolerant, compassionate and loving – right?
And no offense meant to Christians but that was part of why he was killed, it was a problem for the “government” of the time – you can’t run/control people who love the way you can people who hate. Just ask the parent of any teenager in the throes of their first – oh wait let’s ask Sarah or maybe Allan knows better.

My Dad, a WWII vet who passed last Saturday, fought for the defence of ALL Americans, no matter their affliations and thought no less of anyone because of them either. I feel blessed that he taught me true patriotism and I’m so glad to see it echoed here through you and all your supporters.

The use of Muslim by the GOP as though it is some sort of slur is really strange. Accusations of Obama’s supposed Muslim heritage are most often combated with assertions that he is indeed Christian. Of course, why him being a Muslim would be a problem is never addressed. Apparently there is something apparently evil and twisted with subscribing to the Islamic faith. I guess I didn’t get the memo on that one…
Socialism as the latest slur is also quite interesting considering that most people probably couldn’t define socialism if asked and more importantly, seem to conveniently forget that the U.S. has a mixed economy that is actually, some parts capitalism and some parts socialism.
I have come to the conclusion that some people enjoy wallowing in their ignorance. There is no excuse for subscribing to such patent bigotry. There is no logical support for it. Some people are just bigots and will go to the most absurd lengths to remain one.

I disagree with your view that an elected official should suppress their religious beliefs. I also disagree with the view that the theory of creationism should be omitted in schools while the theory of evolution is mandatory.
I do agree that their are bad people in all religions. I was disgusted that a woman, on Sunday after attending church and eating in a diner with her pastor and some of her church members, was yelling “socialist” at Obama. Not only does this show ignorance of economic policies, but it shows ignorance of Christianity. It’s baffling that these “Christians” believe that tax cuts to the rich is better than tax cuts to the working poor. I suggest they read the New Testament over and over and over until it sinks in! I trust Jesus’ economic policies over any economists. In fact, these “Christians” who view helping out the poor as being socialism should not bother praying to God, because in their belief, “you shouldn’t get something for nothing.”

Dear Trish, I am sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention. I am also a mom of 2 small kids and that is why I have a hard time wrapping my brain around her missing presence in her kids’ lives, especially now with one ready to deliver a baby and one with so many needs. I think there is something lacking in Sarah as a mother and I know as much as it should be off limits, I just can’t shake it. It just simply seems unnatural for a mother to make such a choice as this one. It’s not any 9-5 job.

OK I’m no fan of Sarah Palin, but let’s not trash her as a mother. It takes two to make a child and two to raise. Her husband is with that child when she’s not. No one is saying squat about Obama being away from his two daughters.
Attack her policies, her lack of experience, anything political. But please not her parenting skills. I’m a mom and I think it’s off limits. How she chooses to raise her children is her business, not ours.

Sarah is the biggest hypocrite of them all. She too, had the shotgun wedding to Todd and her baby was born just 8 short months after. Now her daughter Bristol is following in her footsteps and who knows how many of her other daughters will do the same. And who decided that she should be the voice for all the mothers of disabled children? I know plenty of moms (my own included) who sacrificed a lot for their disabled children. She’s had one for 6 months and of those 6 months, she’s been away for half of that baby’s life. All the power to her for “keeping” her Down’s baby, but now she’s pretty much abandoned him! Say what you want about the “double standard” but any mother worth her salt would be concerned about the future of her baby and would be devoting her time and energy into his quality of life.

I am so dismayed and disgusted that the Republicans have stooped so low in this campaign. If they had a real grasp on the issues Americans and the World face, they would be addressing those issues. Helen I love your blog and look forward to every post. I have to believe my grandmother, if she was still alive, would share your views. She always looked at people as equal no matter what their race, religion, age, status.
I spent many years searching for a religion that had values I could believe in. I was raised a Protestant, studied Buddism as a teen, became a Baptist when I lived in the South with my first husband, my second Husband was Jewish, and when that marriage ended I studied Paganism, then believed in a higher power for awhile, and today I am Catholic. All religions have value for a person. I think that I learned that love and tolerance are what matters most.

Y’know Helen…I love your wisdom and the fun way you impart it. I once read a quote from Asoka, who was a Buddhist king in India. Under his reign, all religons were openly practiced and tolerated (or better…respected). Asoka said, “By honoring the religion of others, you bring honor to your own.” Perhaps it is time all of us, those who practice a religion and those who don’t to think on that. Or as another King put it, “Can’t we all just get along?”

Again you’ve hit the target, Helen. My family are what I affectionately call “lapsed Protestants,” who think that your relationship with your god(s) is your business. My parents were Methodist and Congregationalist and they’ve done just fine after 40 years… I married a Catholic and we’re doing just fine, too. Most of my friends are probably Unitarian or Pagan.
And I think the thing that frightens me the most – and them – is the radical dominionist Christian movement that is afoot in this country, which thinks that the US should be a Christian country.
The people who think like you do, Helen, the ones who are willing to say freedom of religion means ANY religion, and who are willing to shine a light in those dark spaces where intolerance takes root need to speak up more… lest we truly see a time again when people are burned at the stake for what they believe.

Karen, I’m glad you posted the excerpt from Larry King’s blog, because it’s very succinct and to the point. You left out one point which, while not mentioned by Larry King, was covered in an NPR article some time ago. Cindy McCain has stated time and time again that she was raised an only child. She is not an only child, however. Cindy has an older sister, whose mother was their father’s first wife. Cindy’s half sister was interviewed on NPR, saying that she and Cindy saw each other frequently when they were growing up. When their father died, Cindy inherited everything and the older sister, nothing. The sister’s son commented that at this point they don’t want the family money, just recognition from Cindy McCain. When the story was aired, Cindy McCain still had not responded to NPR’s calls and requests for a comment.
If Michelle Obama had treated her half sister in a similar fashion, the media would have been all over her in a hot second. Instead, once NPR aired their story, nothing else came of it. Like you, I’m extremely disillusioned with the media’s unbalanced coverage of such issues.

My mother was Catholic. My father was Methodist. I’m pushing 50. I know what your talking about. I’ve been told that one of my grandparents objected to the marriage because of the denominational difference. (I won’t say which one.) It was a big deal back then. They got married anyways. Eventually everybody got along just fine.
Sen. Obama has a target on is back X 2. One is for being black. One because some might think he is a Muslim, or worse a terrorist, by association. There are bigoted people, & white supremacist that I’m sure want to see him leave this earth. I believe that if he becomes president that someone will try to do him in. I hope they don’t succeed. Believing this don’t mean that I won’t vote for him. I will. He’s policies makes sense to me. I think that he would be a good president.

These are the issues the media should be addressing. The Keating 5 was mentioned and faded. Sarah Palins commericial Rick Sanchez covered about the AIP and her husbands connection and hers from the commercial wishing them luck and support at their event. I am more disappointed in the media than anything else. You guys are a reflection of the same pitiful racism by not driving these stories home. But let’s keep Acorn and Ayers in the news! It has always been a fact that a black man has to out shine trememdously his white counter-part in corporate america for lead positions. Obama is smarter by far than his opponent with the credentials to back it up. So let’s make that the on going coverage for the next two weeks. McCain graduating 5th from the bottom of his class. We all see how the average C student worked out the last 8 years. Let’s give Obama the credit he deserves.”
I thought that was very well written and definitely thoughts that I have been thinking. The only thing that Marie left out was that the beer distribution company that was built by the Hensley’s (Cindy’s father) was built with an affiliation with the mafia.

Just a thought…
Do you think voters in America actually realize that the rest of the world can not vote for who they are going to hear from in the next four years? Who will make decisions that will effect people far beyond the US border? Much further then even Alaskan border!
Good for Bush that we, non US citizens, could not vote against him en masse last time, but this time, do think of us as well.
I mean, I as a Dutch have much less responsibility to the rest of the world while voting, who cares we have a Harry Potter as a prime minister… Who cares! But we actually have to live with the speeches, ideas and actions of the person of your choice.
Do you think Americans realize this?

Helen, spot on as usual. And, as a Catholic, I find it particularly amusing. I find that Catholics seem to be more tolerant than evangelicals on the whole, BUT this is just my limited experience, certainly, those of which I associate are more tolerant. Perhaps it comes from the strongly anti-Catholic leanings in my area? We have in effect, proved we are the bigger people, by absorbing the critiques of the evangelicals. Though, I must say, the Methodists and Baptists are fairly tolerant round these parts, and I assume for the same reason. This evangelicals give the rest of the Christians a bad name in general.
P.S. I’m still waiting for the day we have a fomerly-Jewish, Muslim lesbian president… ah… those will be the days.

Great Job Helen! Love how you talk about the two things one is never supposed to talk about — religion and politics — in one fell swoop. I agree wholeheartedly.
I was raised Methodist, my first husband was Catholic, and I now consider myself a spiritualist — I believe in a higher power, but think that religion screws it all up, as I’ve seen too many super religious people act in such hypocritical ways. Anyway, I remember a song from my childhood -“They’ll know we are Christians by our love”. Perhaps if all these Sarah Palin type, Bible-thumping Christians lived those words instead of just spoke them, they would have more tolerance for those who think and live differently than they do.

Brilliant, Helen, as always.
The question that comes to my mind is, how many billions and billions of people were tortured or killed in the sake of religious on this earth?? looking back at history, it seems like it always starts as a beautiful thing (a new religious, that is), and soon turns into a tool to control, manipulate and terrify people, and soon after to a political tool to gain power. Sarah Palin believes the rest of us will burn in hell for 1000 years if we don’t convert and accept Jesus, and she seems to be okay with leaving all of us non-Christian sinners out of her voting circle. She hasn’t addressed or try to reach out to any other group. It’s because she doesn’t really know about any other group, since mentally, she never really left Alaska. It’s like she lives in a “Truman Show” type bubble, with just beautiful White Christian folks. And another thing, Sarah: you keep telling us this is the greatest coutry in the world, perfect really (and don’t any of us DARE say a bad word about our beloved America). I say: go to China, walk the great wall, study their 5000 years culture, go to Paris, go to Rome, spend some time in Europe in coutries were people have free universal health care, work 4 days a week and the crime rate is nearly zero, learn about Greece and everything they brought to this world, go and educate yourself about this world and the people that occupy it, and THEN make any statement you want about were we stand in this world. Because let me tell you, my friends… those 8 years under George W have rendered us completely IRELEVANT.
And one more thing, Sarah: this country was founded by people who escaped the old world so they can have religious freedom, so they can live and navigate their lives without the oppressive boot of the church, so they can tolerate each other regardless of who we are. And just one last question: you are against universal health care because “I don’t want to pay for someone else who doesn’t work as hard as me or is not as successfull as me, that’s socialism!” yet you are pro life! well who is going to pay for all these new babies on walefare?? the democrats?? Do you see how crazy this whole thing is???

Your blog is awesome, just thought I would say that. The Mccain rallys are amusing. However I do have to give Mccain credit. He let one of his supporters speak and she said that Obama was an Arab, and Mccain took the mic from her and said. No no he isn’t Arab and even said that he liked him and said he wouldn’t be a bad president, just that he would be a better one. I don’t agree, however we will see on the 4th no?

As one who was raised Methodist and considers herself Pagan, you were correct on the whole love and tolerance thing. It doesn’t matter how one worships. What matters is how one governs. Agreed. MI and FL were disqualified by the DNC and not Hilary of Barack. They just agreed to abide by the decision. Hey, it was a tough primary. Let the healing happen because even Hilary admits that too much is at stake.

My state has a Catholic Governor who was elected into office a couple years ago. Now, I’m not religious, but I do know some of the basic rules of different religions, to include the many Christian branches. One item on the list that I know the Pope frowns upon is abortion. I am pro-choice – choice being one can choose to terminate the pregnancy, but one can also choose to give birth. My Gov. has the ability to separate his religious beliefs, from his constituents. Why is this? We have something that runs along the lines of the Separation of Church and State. Then again, we have a Governor who does not always put his interests first. Gov. Palin has displayed the opposite.

The MI and FL thing was an agreement among the major players in the Democratic Party to manage their Primaries. Rightly or wrongly, this was an agreement in the rules. Hillary backpeddled when she realized it wasn’t benefiting her.
In her Primary Run, Hillary chose to side with McCain and the Republicans and waded in the slime. We see how that worked out.

I love you guys, you’ve got it together girls!!! Short wedding ceremonies and religious tolerance, now that pretty much covers life.
I was raised Methodist but then grew up and saw how “religious people” treat those who don’t believe exactly like themselves. Eventually I said “thanks, but no thanks” to the whole religion thing. I find it insulting how politicians try to paint themselves as “born again” and in the next breath try to paint their opponents as demonic.
Never did think Obama was the best person to occupy the Oval Office and still don’t. His treatment of Hillary Clinton, especially the disqualification of MI and FL delegates was unforgivable, only to welcome those same delegates later for himself. Lost me right there!! On the other hand, I will say I have seen Obama’s campaign show more “compassion” and “good will” toward the McCain’s campaign than “Little Miss Religious” has demonstrated.

On all the rest, I was brought up Church of England, hubby is kinda Catholic and son is now having atheist leanings, we all get along fine. I’d like to ask believers like SP “where’s all the love and tolerance that religion is supposed to bang on about?” It seems to be love and tolerance but only if you believe what I say is right. I won’t go into the ‘practise what you preach’ territory… SP seems to be having enough problems 🙂

Helen, you are “spot on” as usual! Most religions teach three fundamental things: respect yourself, respect those around you (mother, father, community, etc.) and respect your environment (in a general sort of way). Just imagine if everyone in the world followed those three simple rules! Sure if believing in a God (or Gods) helps you to be a good person, then bravo! But using religion to shield yourself from the unknown and thereby fearing it – well, then religion breeds ignorance and then hatred.
And yanno…. hatred is not something we need any more of in this world (and in our country).

Greetings from the “Emerald City” aka Seattle, Washington! Just want say that I came to your wonderful site last night (it was mentioned in another political blog). I read all of your posts and truly appreciated your wit and wisdom!!! Personally, I’m an agnostic too so I especially appreciated your comments today.
I was always ‘sitting on the fence’ between Obama & Clinton. But his smoothly run campaign convinced me (even before Clinton dropped out) that Obama would have the temperament and intellect to drag this country out of the depths it has sunk over the past 8 years.
