Yep. I called her a bitch and I am not taking it back.

I am so surprised at how many of you have come to my little web page blog.  People didn’t think I was 82 so I thought maybe you couldn’t see the pictures but then someone called me old and fat so I guess you can.

If you are looking for my post about Sarah Palin it appears right before this one.  I guess I hit a nerve with my little story about the Governor, but I just got so mad when my friend Margaret told me she was thinking about voting for McCain and thought Sarah was kind of interesting.  Well, we’ve survived a lot of differences over the years so I guess we can survive this one.

For those of you calling me names.  Shoot.  I’m 82 and have been called much worse by much better.  Margaret all but called me a communist for posting it in the first place and told me my sailor mouth would get me in trouble!  I don’t mind.  Besides I started it by calling that fool from Alaska a bitch.  Surely you could not have watched that debate without realizing she has no idea what end is up.  I remember a girl like that in high school.  Her name was Sally and we used to say that she wasn’t right in the head.

I saw Gwen Ifill on a TV program this weekend and she said there really wasn’t anything she could do once Palin decided to “blow me off”.  Well, call me stupid but I thought debates had rules so that both parties could be evaluated equally.  “Oh Gosh Joe.  There you go again.”  Yep.  There he did go again – answering the “gosh darn” question that was being asked.   I would like to say I am sorry, but I am not.  That woman is an idiot.  Sarah not Gwen.  I like Gwen most of the time.

A lot of you have asked me to keep writing stuff.  Well, I will watch the debates tomorrow night and if I get mad again, I will write it all down for you here.

One more thing.  The only comments that really made me mad were the fools that came here preaching the bible and all that pro-life crap.  Most pro-life nut cases need to actually get a life and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing.  Sarah Palin had the choice to talk to her daughter about sex.  Her daughter had the choice to listen or not listen.  Her daughter had the choice to have sex or not have sex.  And once she was pregnant she had the choice to keep the baby, put it up for adoption or terminate the pregnancy.  And as much as it scares me that the Palin clan is producing a whole new generation of women like my old friend Sally, the fact is they have a choice.  All I ask is that women respect the right of other women to make their own choice because I remember what it was like when we didn’t have a choice.

Thanks for stopping by. I mean it.

  35. Hi Helen and Margaret!
Your blog is fantastic! Please keep up the writing!!
    Cheers for Obama!

  36. OMG this woman is HILARIOUS!!!

  37. Don’t let the crazy crackpots get you down. You speak the truth and it is so refreshing to hear it.

  38. You rock! I second that Sarah Palin is a bitch and I will add scary to that statement as well.

  39. The Anchorage Daily News endorsed Obama today!

    Vote Obama!

  40. Helen,

You keep calling them like you see them. You are right on about that Sarah Palin. She may be smart but she is not ready to run my country!

  41. Tibbs, what does go smell by feet mean? Is that code? And where the hell did you get your info on Joe Biden? He didn’t say that, he was referring to a quote by Madeline Albright. Quit watching Fox, educate yourself and quit screaming “BE AFRAID!” We’re not afraid, we’re going to win.

  42. Well said, I totally agree, and amen to that sistah!!

  43. How amazing are you! As someone who lives on the other side of the world, and while I can not vote in your election, will undoubtedly experience the effects of your decisions.

I am so pleased to hear that others think Sarah Palin is a truly terrifying woman…and that there is every chance that B. will be the next leader of your country.

  44. Really, tell us exactly what the Obama plan will do to our taxes. Do you really know or are you just repeating the rhetoric that you have heard? No one said we would be attacked. There have been several comments that the new president would be tested. Coming from Colin Powell, he meant either of them. Question is, is how is the new president going to handle it. More war and no diplomacy or standing up and being firm. McCain gets so angry and upset it is noticeable. In diplomatic relations you need to be able to be umm… Diplomatic, meaning calm cool and collected.

  45. Oh and Kelly, sorry, Pie Hold is open, wow, haven’t heard that one in awhile.
And please, dear Kelly, tell me how Barack Obama is brave? That’s what I thought. Now go smell by feet.

  46. All I can say is “McCain and Palin…Yes We Can”…Do any of you realize what the BO/JB ticket will do to our taxes? Or how about our freedom? Joe B has basically already told us we will be attached if BO is pres…WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! This is more than just “Sarah Palin is a red neck”…this is about our future and our country and our children….VOTE …get off of this dumb, fake website and go make a difference with your vote! ugh

  47. I love your down the earth tell it like it is attitude. And for an 85 year old woman… you are way more advance than allot of ederly women, men and young women & men. As far as the pregnancy goes, it’s really no suprise because it happens all the time just probably the first time it happened on a huge scale with plenty of viewers. Poor young guy now he has to get married one way or another, well I guess you reap what you sow.

  48. [...] My antidote to that little old lady from Shakopee is this little old lady from Texas. [...]

  49. You are delightful. I just wish your fellow texans were as bright as you are. Best wishes

  50. My girl friend and I want to be you and Maraget in twenty years………this blog rocks

    Obama/Biden 08 & 12 ~ no rat from AK

  51. So, let me get this straight: everyone here is raving over how “brave” and “honest” “Helen” is; Helen, who isn’t even using her own name, who is clearly not an 82 year old woman, who calls a woman a name and suggest she stick a pipeline up her butt (!!)

and if you disagree, your post disappears?

yep, pretty brave and honest, that! read me quick before I am deleted again!!

  52. Helen,
You are not, I suspect, an 82 year old woman in a motorized scooter. Nevertheless, what everyone relates to is your candor. This is much like the story of The Emperor’s New Clothes, where someone finally comes out and says what everyone is thinking.
    Bravo, Helen.

    Go Obama!

  53. Thank you for you well written blog! You are an inspiration and you are right on target about that women!

  54. Helen,

You rock! I love the idea of an octogenarian with a mind of her own. I was raised in an uber-religious (mormon) family and my parents and “that side” of the family has constantly ridden my ass for thinking for myself. I aspire to be like you when I’m 82!!

In the meantime, maybe I’ll start peppering my blog a bit more…I think I’m too nice in mine. This country is going to hell in a handbasket if ‘Walnuts and the Baracuda’ get elected.

    Go Barack!!!!

  55. thank you helen!

i can not agree more with what you wrote about women supporting other women’s right to a choice in whatever situation a decision has to be made in.

mccain has insulted many female voters by putting this woman on a ballot. you think that just because she has boobs women across the country are going to support her? intelligent people vote on the issues, not on gender or race.

thank you for speaking your mind.
    keep at it sister!

  56. Dear Ms. Helen;

I most write I LOVE your blog and I totally agree with you when it comes to the wacko of Sarah Palin. You sound like a very smart woman putting your opinion and I take off my hat for that and give you all my respect.

  57. Helen…you rock my socks. You are bookmarked and I’m looking forward to more! I can only hope grow up to be as spunky, witty, and intelligent — thanks for the great example.

  58. Oh and one more thing. I hate to nitpick but Chey, there is no such word as stupider. Try dumber. Maybe you’re all ready on the short bus?…… Just kidding.

  59. Oh and one more thing, I would like to say about the response from Mr. Alvarez, when you can get pregnant, you can tell me that I can’t have an abortion. And if you truly believed abortion was wrong, you would not believe in abortion under any circumstances.

  60. Helen, It is so refreshing to finally hear an intelligent woman speak! I lived in suburban hell in the midwest surrounded by mediocrity. I am so sick of people cutting Palin slack and saying she did ok in the debates blah blah blah. She IS stupid. She is such a freaking redneck and I resent that she is considered “real” or down to earth”. Since when is “down to earth” equivelent to white trash? She turns on the charm and people are so oblivious that they think charm qualifies you for public office. Are we so lazy and brain dead that we can’t see she has no substance? I am old enough to remember woman fighting for equal rights (which we don’t totally have even yet) and the extreme discrimination that we suffered. This woman sets us back 50 yrs. She may have a job, but she still got it by being “cute” or flirtatious or charming. She makes it look as though that’s all women are capable of and we should never be expected to do any better. Seriously, is this the best representative of our gender that we have???

  61. Helen, YOU GO GIRL!!!
The time to be politically correct has passed, we only have time now to SAVE OUR BEHINDS!!!
So keep on speaking your mind honey, it’s what most of us can relate to…not all the rubbish that the puppets on the news channels are puking out on a daily basis!
    Love and peace.

  62. Wow! I wish I had a grandma like you! You’re a wise old woman and I hope these people absorb some of your wisdom. I think we’re stupider as a nation because of our president. Sarah Palin would put us all on the short bus.

  63. Oh Helen, I so hope you will blog about all things, not just the debates. They are over and done with, they didn’t make me change my mind, it is Obama all the way.

I just would love to read your blogs about life, about your life, your thoughts and suggestions for making life even better as we grow older.

When I get up in the morning I bring my coffee here to see what you are up to. Take care and I love the salty mouth ;-) My mom use to tell me I had a mouth like a longshoreman when I was involved in local politics. Sometimes it is the only thing that makes them listen.

  64. you now are in my favorites list. I will check back regularly. I love your blog! -liv-

  65. Helen,
Keep it up! That Tibbs person above me is full of manure. Down to earth, strong and brave? I’m sorry, but what has she done that’s down to earth? Strong? Since when is attacking someone on cue (and decrying a statesman as a terrorist)for political gain, strength? Brave? BRAVE? For what? She’s living a posh life and has been gifted an opportunity well beyond what she’s earned. Bravery is standing up without a crowd to cheer you on. Bravery is doing the right thing when you know darn well it could cost you dearly. Taking risks to do what is just and right. I see none of that in the political circus Palin has been perpetuating. Cowardly people have just as many kids as brave people do, both with Downs and otherwise, so before you throw that hockey mom, pitbull bravado stuff out at us Tibbs, shut your pie hole.

Sorry to respond to a responder here Helen. Thank God for voices like yours.

  66. …”working blue collar jobs that lead to nowhere. …”

really, nowhere? My husband started as a beat cop and is now a lieutenant.

    really? nowhere? Interesting…….

  67. Do you erase all of the bad blogs that don’t agree with you? Obviously, this blog is reachable through a very liberal site. I am so sad that you are so negative. I really struggle with older liberal women who have spent most of their lives either living off a man’s salary or working blue collar jobs that lead to nowhere. For the first time, we have a woman running for VP who is not only a “real” woman (mother, sister, daughter), but she’s also down to earth and strong and brave. I knew no matter who McCain picked the liberal women would chew them up because they are so angry Hillary didn’t win.

  68. I love you Helen! You remind me of my own mother, who is an 80 year old straight talking woman just like you! She also remembers what it was like before we had a choice and has participated in both marches in Washington carrying a coathanger with a sign that said “Never again”.

  69. Helen, I’m an 18 year old college student in a very very conservative town and your blog is definitely a breath of fresh air. I am so thankful for women out there like you who tell it like it is. Keep up the amazing words and thoughts.

As for all this pro-life pro-choice crap that all y’all are arguing about-take it somewhere else. Its a never ending debate so whats the point in wasting space and energy over it? And please be respectful of other people opinions. We all have the right to say and think and believe in what we want.

  70. Thank you, thank you , thank you!
What with worrying about whether I’m having a heart attack or merely heartburn everytime our infamous governor ignores wingnuts spinning off their posts at her rallies and having to practice deep breathing everytime another Alaskan says it’s not “Our Sarah’s fault somebody in Florida or wherever is misbehavin’” I’ve been too busy to laugh…
Bless you … you made me laugh til I cried… which is what I REALLY needed to do.

Please folks – while we don’t want to send her on and lots of us don’t really want her back- we need you to send our governor home. We really need to face up to the mess WE made putting her in the governor’s chair.

  71. Helen, I’ve only read two of your posts, and think they are right on the mark about Sarah Palin and McCain. I shudder to think what our country would be like if those two actually got in office.

I especially liked your comments about Sarah’s “folksy” manner. I too find it really annoying and just silly. I grew up in southwest Kansas, and it was my time at the University of Kansas that made me realize that my twangy accent made me sound less educated than I was. I’ve worked very hard to rid my speech of all those poorly pronounced words. The result is that I at least think I sound more intelligent (whether I do is for others to decide).

Oh, and I think it’s great that you and your friend Margaret are blogging, and that it was your grandson who taught you how to do it. Fun, isn’t it?

  72. Helen, you keep this up, you might just get a marriage proposal from a man half your age….

I love it–keep giving ‘em hell!

  73. Ok Joe forget the womb, why don’t you and the rest of the “do-gooders with picket signs” line up to adopt the crack babies and FAS babies that I have had the pleasure of seeing as permanant vegetables left in a hospital for the rest of their lives because no one wanted them. Sorry but I think ending that life before it started would have been the “pro-life” thing to do instead of giving them the “No-life” option to live with no function. At least then they would be with their lord (another favorite of the pro-lifers) But their lives are so important to you I’m sure you can start at La Rabida in Chicago, they have plenty to get the ball rolling. That’s what kills me about the pro-life garbage, they are so gung ho to preserve life while giving no after thought to what kind of life they are trying to preserve. THey stand there blindly with their signs peraching about the bible and life, yet never once have I seen one step out of the line and say hey I’ll adopt your baby, oh unless of course they’re healthy and white.

  74. You are right on Helen and If more of us older folks
would wake up and vote we could change the world.
Why do you think we are on this earth anyway? We
were placed here to do Gods work and being faithfull
to our countrie’s needs means that young thinking
people and old veterans like myself have control in
Washington if we just speak up.

  75. Don’t let the mental cases leaving nasty comments bother you. Their lives are miserable, and they have no idea that their misery has been brought on by their own behavior.

  76. I love you. Are you interested in (slightly) younger men? We can divorce our spouses and start over in a brave new world. xxxooooxxxoxoxx

  77. I, for one, thank you for saying this so clearly (and cogently, and gramatically, for that matter.) You may enjoy the Rolling Stone article this month about John McCain, elucidating what a weenie is really is… but, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that you subscribed to the magazine, Helen.

  78. Helen,
My dear you have a talent for tellin’ it like it is!

Pro-life, yes, and then shoots anything that moves—and from airplanes, no less. Now that is a Pro-life platform to stand on! I think that platform is on sinkin’ sand.

Has anyone seen that Obama is now up by 14 points, yes, kids—FOURTEEN POINTS! I see that cabinet post for you yet, Helen!

  79. Helen,

Will you be my adopted mom? mine doesn’t talk to me because of my “lifestyle” and my politics. You are great !!! and thank you for speaking your mind, never stop!

  80. If you’re ever in the market for a shameless boytoy, please keep me in mind. I’ve read your blog and think I’m in LOVE!

  81. Nikki… You go girl!

  82. Nikki, if I implied that I wanted to get into your womb, I’m sorry.

Thank you for your comments. They give me a great insight into the pro-choice psyche.

  83. Joe- stay out of my womb. Don’t dictate the bible to me either. My body, my choice. And any of you No-Choicers who think you are going to overturn Roe v Wade? Be prepared for a long, lengthy, bloody battle. If it divides the staets, so be it. You will be part of the next civil war. Think I’m kidding? Push it. We are making progress, finally, across so many lines, that you think there are actually enough of you to change things? I wouldn’t be so sure. And the civil war wouldn’t be just about pro vs no. It would be about so many things, so many civil liberties fundamentalists want to take away from all of us. We’re fine with you thinking what you wish, just don’t push it on me. I’m a happily married momma of 3 beautiful children. Even though I consider myself a humanist/pacifist, I would gladly take up arms if I was called to duty, and being that I’m a expert marksman (yes, I’m pacifist, but think husband who wants wife to protect herself, so wife took shootin’ lessons, which were quite fun btw, at which she quickly excelled, all just to placate said husband) I will have no problem laying down whomever would take our liberties away. You think what’s going on in the middle east is bad? Keep pushing your bullshit agenda and you’re gonna push good people past their points of tolerance. It is not a fight you can win, not now, not ever. There are too many good people to let that happen. Again, why don’t you take on something you DO have power over? Certainly not MY body or what I do with it. Why don’t you volunteer regularly at Planned Parenthood, so you can get to know these women. Why do you have such a problem with tax money going to help support single moms, yet don’t want them to get an abortion either. As long as they have the baby, it appears you don’t care what happens to it after its born. Hypocrisy, pure and simple.

And Chelsey, it is not only ypur generation, but many generations who have bought into the lies and deceit, who have paraded around for years pretendng to know what’s best for everyone else, while attempting to destroy the very fabric of this country. In fact, I think your generation probably has a clearer picture than most. Stay active girl and give em hell.

And Helen, I keep reading other blogs about you. Some are convinced you are some kid with an agenda. I say, who cares? Don’t shoot the messenger, right. I kinda like picturing a good old fashioned liberal Grandma at the wheel here, but its ok with me if its not. The message is the same no matter who or what wrote this. Sarah Failin is a bitch. An uninformed, poor excuse for a ‘modern’ woman. So whoever you are dear, keep plugging away. And if you don’t know how to shoot, well just give me a call! I’m ready for the civil war, if it comes to pass, and will fight them with everything I have. My children are entiteld to a future, and not to hail from the country that would be a total laughing stock if this dumb duo make it to office. How would we ever recover????

  84. A friend of mine recently had me read what you said about Sarah Palin (and I agree 100%). I loved it so much that I read this entry, also. I laughed my ass off up until the very end.

“I remember what it was like when we didn’t have a choice.”

For some reason, this really hit me hard in the face. I’m 21-years-old. I have no idea what it’s like to not have a choice. But when I read that, I just about started crying. It’s awful how women have worked so damn hard to have rights and have a choice, and now those same women have to stand by and watch in their old age while my generation destroys everything they worked to gain for us. I don’t think we realize how spoiled we really are.

“Most pro-life nut cases need to actually get a life and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. ”

I think this applies to just about everyone who thinks that their cries and moans are going to make a positive difference for the rest of society! These people don’t seem to realize how much the rest of us DON’T care.

  85. Helen, I like your writing, but you’ve obviously drunk the pro-choice Kool-Aid.

You know when to stop trusting people? When they hide behind euphemisms and lies. Orwell called it NewSpeak. “Reproductive rights” means the right for women to destroy their unborn children. The term “Pro-choice” is pure marketing designed to appeal to the American ideal of freedom. “Anti-choice” is a perfect example of a bullshit term. The word is “abortion”. If one is so afraid to use it, they should probably be afraid to promote it! If Planned Parenthood really wanted to promote choice, that choice would be accompanied by ultrasound machines so that women could see the life they are snuffing.

“Pro-choice” wants nothing to do with this sort of education. It prefers to have women blindly shoot their unborn children in the back rather than having them look at them. No wonder so many women who undergo an abortion are left mentally and emotionally scarred.

But I’m reasonable. I’d be ok with a rape and incest exception as long as every crisis-pregnancy mother-to-be is given full non-biased information about the negative aspect of taking an unborn life and is required to see a sonogram. After all, the #1 cause of unwanted pregnancies isn’t rape or incest. It’s carelessness.

By the way, you’re never too old to change your mind. Norma McCorvey is now pro-life!

  86. Give ‘em hell, Helen!

  87. I love it!!! I hope I am still as liberal as you are in 50 years! My mother says it is inevitable, that we grow more conservative with age. I call bullshit!!! YOU ROCK!!! I am bookmarking your blog!

  88. Right On Grams! I was scared this race would be generational, but you’re keepin it REAL !! Thanks-

  89. Hmm…Sit on a charity board with a terrorist and it makes you a terrorist…Interesting…You see its a well documented fact in the 90′s Bush Sr. met with the Taliban in the Whitehouse when they thought they were going to get something out of that alliance..So what does that make him? Careful who you HoverRound with ladies…We’re about to head into the 17th Century Politics and just about any body will be accused of WitchCraft.

  90. Well I feel much better now, you betcha. Thank you! I would love to arrange a meeting with you and Gayle Quinnell, the one sending “Obama is an Arab” letters to random people in the phonebook. I’d like to see you knock some sense into her vacant old head.

  91. Brilliant! So glad to know that I’m not the only one that thinks she’s a bitch! I’m new to your blog and I like it! Hope I’m as smart as you when I’m 82!

  92. Helen, I love you! If Molly Ivins was still around, I’ll bet she’d be so proud of you. You make me feel like calling Texas the “great state” again. Go, Helen, go-I’ve got your back!!

  93. OMG, I love your honesty. I’m not exactly sure why you haven’t had an opportunity to be a contributor to one of the major networks.

  94. Seriously, people like you make this world a better place! And you are so right about choices!

  95. You Go Girl! Thank you for this Texas Tidepool of straight-talking!

I will be adding you to my favorites and stopping by often!

    From your fellow Texan,

    Kimberly B-R

  96. You’re so awesome. I wish we were related.

  97. I’m almost 16 years old and I completely agree with all of your points of view. Palin would take so much away from my generation if she were elected, and it’s no up to us, we cannot vote yet. Some of the things I have heard about her are absurd. I’m as liberal as teenagers can get. My best friends and I took copies of “the onion” (a liberal newspaper in washington DC) and wrote “Equality for all” or when read backwards “All for equality”. We sat on the ground of a metro station for a good portion of the summer, people took our pictures and were trying to set up a website to stand up for what we believe in. Sarah Palin is the type of person that would be HORRIBLE for the job, even some conservative republicans are saying that she is “in way over her head”. For any republicans that find their way here, make the right choice for my generation, give us young women the choice, set an example. Thank you.

    Julia F.

  98. Sarah Palin Remix:

  99. Ladies, you have made my day. I grew up in Maine (Detroit, where I still have a house) and live in Dallas, deep in the heart of Bushword.

  100. YOU are awesome! I got a link to your “Palin’s a bitch” blog from some person I don’t even know that got my e-mail apparantly from forwarded messages…I don’t mind one bit since he’s a Palin-hater too :)
If McCain and her win…Australia, England, Canada, shit, Africa, here I come!

  101. Hey Megan, I don’t know your age, but forget the idea that people older than baby boomers are all conservative. I am 75 and I was appalled that Sarah Palin was nominated. Those of us “senior citizens” (in age only) have the ability to read, reason and think for ourselves. Maybe there’s hope for McCain yet. (Well, I can dream can’t I?) And there’s no upper limit on age for voting! Go Silent Generation!

  102. I just discovered your blog and I love it! Found it on Raw Story and as soon as I read the Bullshit entry, I had to email my brother and send him the link. Wonder if that’s how your popularity is spreading? I think so. You and I have about 30 yrs between us but I think I’ve found a kindred spirit.

  103. Love you Helen. We can always use more truth in our world.

  104. Hi Helen, I love your stuff! Keep telling it like it is! Your site is great!

And you might want to check out another political website,

He says everything we all think about all this.

  105. I am glad that you didn’t take it back! You are fabulous!

  106. Helen, Did I understand correctly that you are originally from Georgia? Keep speaking from your heart! Love your blog.

P.S. I’m also from Georgia and I’ve already cast my vote for Obama and Biden.

  107. Hi Helen! Love the blog so far!

Greetings from Alaska! Yes, that’s right, I’m from the infamous state spawing a certain woman who could be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Let me tell you, many up here do not support Palin. In fact, very few people I know actually do support both her and her extreme conservative views, and those that do tend to be the hardcore religious Republicans.

As for the PFD, or as some like to call it up here “Payday”, yes we do get money from the government. And yes, many tend to spend it on crap. However, for those people who can’t afford it, the PFD is used to pay for doctor’s visits, dentists, college, bills, heating for the winter, and many other things that we might not be able to afford otherwise. Mine personally went to paying for my school loans and towards my hospitals bills from my car crash last year. Not too mention the $800 or so I’ve put away when we get taxed heavily on it in the spring, a thought some people might not have considered. So it isn’t fair that we get free money here, but in some villages here in the state, that money is much more than a new plasma flatscreen.

I don’t like Sarah Palin. I don’t like her secretive policies, her loyalist attitude, or cutesy performance with the public. She does not speak for me as an Alaskan, as a woman, or as a possible future mother. Nor does she speak for my family, my boyfriend, or my friends. No thank you Sarah, I prefer someone with a more open (and intelligent) mind.

  108. Helen, I love you!

  109. [...] antidote to that little old lady from Shakopee is this little old lady from Texas. My head, it [...]

  110. Helen, if I may, something you said needs repeating:

“One more thing. All I ask is that women respect the right of other women to make their own choice because I remember what it was like when we didn’t have a choice.”

Spot on target… I’m so tired of the conservative takeover of our country and into our homes and everyone’s private lives… You two ladies have made my day!

  111. Definitely channeling my Hero, Ann Richards. Definitely.

  112. All I can say is YOU ROCK! Do not go gently into that good night! Keep on rockin’ and saying what you believe. So far, that’s still legal in this country! I love you and I’ve never even met you. You are amazing.

  113. “All I ask is that women respect the right of other women to make their own choice because I remember what it was like when we didn’t have a choice.”

    AMEN! Finally someone that understands!

Helen, I lost both of my grandmothers at a young age…….Will you be my grandma? I love you! I haven’t laughed that hard in a very long time. Keep it up!

  114. Be my Granny, you witty old biddy.

    Love it.

  115. You go girl! After the election is over, the cue cards will vanish and she’ll go back to being the broom riding governor.

Of course, my fear is the neocons will bring her back to run for president in 2012. Heck, that’ll mean you’ll have to stick around to tell the truth about her…again.

  116. Can I tell you how much you make me smile? You are great, and it encourages me that older people aren’t necessarily voting for the ‘mavericks’. It’s my wrongful assumption that anyone over 70 is not voting for a person of color and are blinded by Palin’s winks. I just have to say, shame on me! You proved me wrong and I’m very happy about that.

With the election decision less than 30 days away, I”m getting anxious and vacillating between hopeful and incredibly depressed. Anytime I get down I want some SNL skits with Tina Fay or turn into Daily Show to hear from the intellects of the world. I do wonder how we’ve gotten to the point of potentially having someone run our country who will bring us back to pre-Roe v Wade, is anti-condom!, and will just ‘tolerate’ a group of people (aka gays and lesbians). I mean, seriously!
Plus, I find it ironic that Palin and McCain keep saying how they want less gov’t yet they don’t want to leave people alone in terms of their own choices in their own lives.
I’m celebrating today though. I’m celebrating knowing there are like-minded, intelligent folk out there :-) Thanks for this, and go Obama!!

  117. Dear Helen,
I especially appreciate your “pro-choice” comments. I wish there were more people like you who would mind their own business and not try to creep into other people’s wombs.
I just love the way the “anti-choice” people (I refuse to call them pro-life, because they aren’t) say they want to take government off their backs–except when it comes to women’s bodies. Then it’s okay for government to come into your bedroom, bathroom, and doctor’s office and tell you what to do.
Some years ago, I used to serve as an escort into a women’s clinic. There were protesters outside because some of the doctors did abortions in the clinic. One time a couple was walking in; the man was clearly a blue-collar guy (the type Sarah thinks she knows so well). When the protesters yelled at him not to bring his wife inside, he yelled back: mind your own business, are you going to pay for this child and raise it? Things like that. I loved it because he was real. That couple may not have liked the choice they made, but I’ll bet they appreciated that they had a choice. And I’ll bet they remembered, as you and I do, when the only choices were: have the baby, give it up, or go to a dirty, back alley clinic. Not good choices.
So please keep on blogging. I must confess, I’m kind of new to this, but I just love the pure democracy of it—even the people who want to shut you up (AS IF!) have the right to say so. I’ll stop now. Keep on keepin’ on!

  118. Brilliant and honest! I just sent a link to your blog to a ton of friends (add up our collective weight and yes, we do weigh a ton!).

I aspire to be you at 82 – another 30 years to get there!!! Stay true to your thoughts, we don’t need any more people in the nation who say one thing but mean another.

I’ve become a fan and a regular reader!!!

  119. i love your posts – i’ve only gotten through the 4 most recent posts, but i think they are great – i cant wait to read more. thank you for this levity :)

  120. I will be 81 next month and I certainly don’t want to be famous for putting anyone down like you do. Do you know her personally? Have you never had any problems in your family??? I
think I rock too, but to a different drummer. Sorry I can’t belong to your fan club.
I’m just another old bitch like you but with different values.

  121. God love ya, Helen! I so enjoy your straight talk!
They should put you on CNN!

  122. Dearest Helen:

I have not a rats ass chance in hell of ever knowing you personally, but if that pleasure ever presented itself, I would certainly shake your dear hand. You have hit the nail on the head, sister. That must be what they call the wisdom that comes with age. Truly, between the chortles and guffaws and peels of hilarity, I realized the truth of everything you were saying.

    You go GURL ! ! ! !

  123. Hey everyone. Margaret and Helen have been nominated for a Bloggers Choice Award in both the Politcal and Humor categories. Go vote for them at http://bloggerschoiceawards.com/

    Let’s make our gals famous!!!

  124. I’m back for more!!!Please keep blogging, I haven’t laughed this much in a long time. Your knack with words certainly will keep me coming back for more…..more….MORE…..

I bet you have a lot of opinions….not just politcal opinions…….I’m willing to listen if you’re will to write!

  125. You are amazing…I’m bookmarking this page. Thank you for publicly saying what any thinking person has wanted for a long time – she is the worst thing that has happened to the women’s movement, and John McCain is only showing his low regard for women by using her for her ovaries and her reach to the religious-right-crazy. This is the complete opposite of cracking that glass ceiling.

I’m crossing my fingers and holding my breath until this thing is over, hoping for the logical outcome.

  126. WAKE UP AMERICA-WAKE UP!!!…..did you skip school today?

    Naughty boy!!

  127. Hello, Helen
I just found your blog and what a hoot you are! Please tell us more about yourself. Have tried going to your archive to learn more about you, but for some reason, I can’t pull up your old posts. Very cool that you have a blog! You put us youngsters in our 60s to shame.

  128. I cracked up over your blog about Palin and am on your side regarding her. You are too funny, and very sharp for your age, good for you! Wish I could hang out with you in person, but since I can’t I’ll just keep reading your blog;)

  129. I absolutely LOVE you! I loved your blog on Palin. Frankly the woman scares the living crap out of me, and the thought of her one step away from taking over when Grandpa Munster finally bites it is enough to make me want to move to Canada.

Thank you so much for being such an honest voice!

  130. You are amazing, keep telling it like it is!! I wish there were more people like you out there, because then this election wouldn’t be such a contest.

  131. Give ‘em hell, Helen! One of the few advantages in getting to be an old broad is you can say whatever you want and if people don’t like it, you don’t have to give a damn.

I suspect you’ll be off a few Christmas card lists this year. Which, I don’t know about you, but in my mind is kind of a blessing. Rave on!

  133. I thank you for bringing up a womans right to choose. In reality thats all we are fighting for. We are not pro-abortion, we are just in favor of choosing for ourselves what is best. Thank you for spelling it out in a way that everyone can understand. I wish all politicians were as smart as you.

  134. What a cool and funny Lady you are.
I would be really embarrassed if Sarah Palin was our VP.
    Blog on sista’

  135. Helen, you might be old but your blogs are a breath of fresh air. From your fans in Canada!

  136. Wow… Just… WOW!

  137. Out here in the Hoosier Heartland, Sarah is what is known as a “teen-age bitch cheerleader wanna-be.”

She’s shrewd, cunning, conniving, and will probably end up with her very own radio talk show if she isn’t elected VP.

I too feel insulted by John’s lack of judgment in the choice of his running mate. Is his opinion of the American voter really so low, or is there a “man behind the curtain” pulling John’s strings?

What a waste of what could have been a perfectly good Republican candidate for the presidency.

  138. Woo!Hoo! Margaret and Helen, I’ve just added you to my favorites list.

The fact that I agree with you in no way diminishes the fact that the way you say what you say is fabulous! Your blog is the real “Straight Talk Express.”

    I Love it!!!

  139. Helen, you are brilliant! BRILLIANT!!!! And I’m so glad I found this blog.

As for the trolls on this site: get a life. Please? For your sake?

    KEEP IT UP, HELEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  140. You inspire me. I will keep stopping by.

  141. Thank you! Thank you for being sassy and out-spoken and wise and lovely and willing to write. Thank you!

  142. [...] Yep. I called her a bitch and I am not taking it back. [...]

  143. You rock Helen!

  144. I am Paula look where I sit..
In the world of DUH and my head is full of shit…
I don’t know what is latest in news …
But I do like to stick my finger in other peoplz viewsss… :)

  145. “Margaret all but called me a communist for posting it in the first place”

I find this — in combo with your 60-year friendship — wonderful… because my husband and I are, shall we say, different in our political viewpoints (he’s more like Margaret. I’m sure you’re surprised). Some days — like during election season — this is somewhat difficult, and knowing of others that stay buds regardless is deeply encouraging.

  146. I really enjoyed reading your posts–they are full of wisdom and humor. I only wish more people can think like you. It sometimes terrifies me how ignorant some people can be (and choose to be). People like you brings hope to this country. A million thanks!!!

  147. You are my hero. I loved your posts about Palin and McCain. Please keep writing!

  148. Helen check this one out, it’s Betty White as McCain’s speech writer and her opinion on Palin:

  149. You are one straight talking and smart woman. I’m so glad a friend in my journal had a link to you…I’m a fellow Texan and you are an inspiration.

  150. Helen,, I’ve been reading your blog since Sunday morning– love it.
Thought you would like this story on Palin about her Newsweek cover shot, it’s a hoot.

  151. Will you be my grandma? I love your sense of humor and your common sense outlook on life. My grandma died at the age of 97 in 2000. I’d like to think she’d be right here saying the same common sense stuff as you. You go girl!

  152. HI Helen! Fly by comment here…You go girl. I am 32 yrs old and I fully intend to speak my mind, like you, when I am in my 80s!!

For all the trolls…lay off. You need to respect your elders.

  153. Helen…I love you! You are so right on the money and I am thrilled your site was forwarded to me. Keep up the good work. You have lots of fans!

  154. You are fantastic Helen! Please keep telling it like it is.

  155. Calli,

You said far before your last comment that you did not have time for this site anymore, well then go away. The only reason you are remotely helpful is for amusement.

  156. Well said!

  157. Did I read something about morals????

hmmmm, according to this article, Palin was married when this happened

  158. Well, I’m “only” 58, and I too can remember when there were times with a lot less BS than these 2 creeps are generating! Thank God for you and thank God that NPR reports on the lies the day after the election too!

Choice? Yep, I choose change too. Keep up the comments!!! It’s totally refreshing–whether you’re 82, 28, o4 somewhere in between!!!!

  159. …I love you.

  160. Oh my gosh, Helen…

You are the most wonderful Granny ever. Please adopt me.

Seriously, thanks for putting a clear and concise voice to all the craziness!

  161. And Tara, I think you are amazing. <3

  162. Calli, Honey, I beg to disagree. I have already given my reasons as to why this constitutes as free speech rather than hate speech, and I do so hate repeating myself. Why are you so wrapped up in this anyway? If you are so fundamentally opposed to what people write on this blog, then DONT READ IT. It is obviously offending you to the extreme to read what Helen wrote originally, and what people are commenting on afterward is offensive to you as well. Instead, why dont you employ your freedom of speech and spew your hate in a blog of your own, rather than encroach upon others’ freedom to write and think what they want? Other people have tried to be very tolerant of you on this blog thus far, but it is obvious that collectively, we are tired of you trying to cut everyone down. So do it on your own space, not on someone else’s.

I very well know what hate speech is. I am a political science major, I kind of know something that is going on. Im not an idiot and I hate it when people try to paint me that way in order to try and make their own point sound more valid. And I really do not appreciate it when people try to demean and belittle me by saying honey and things of that nature in such a blatantly arrogant manner, so if you could refrain from that in the future, that would be absolutely terrific.

    Thanks darling!!!! :D

  163. You are amazing. :) :) :) God bless you.

  164. You are without a doubt one of the most refreshing voices I’ve read over the past month and a half. I’m from Alaska and as much as we don’t want her either…I beg the nation to see the light and send her back to where she belongs… waving to Russia from Wasilla.

    Obama/Biden…the real change we need.

  165. Helen, I am so glad I found your blog. You speak the truth. I also live in Texas and you are welcome at my house anytime.

  166. I love you. I just read your last 5 posts and I want to grow up to be like you. :)

  167. Helen, I love your blog! You are a breath of fresh air. Keep up the great work.

  168. No one else in my family is tech savvy enough to blog. You go girl! Forget content, way to embrace the changing face of communication. Since our schools are all pushing the 21st century aspect of the future it is nice to know that the message is going out to all age levels in society and the technology is making it’s way around

  169. Ladies, I just found your blog and I have to say BRAVO! Thank you for being alive, vital, and using your experience and the brains that God gave you.

We can all benefit from you experience and insight.

    Thank you.

  170. Calli,

This is my last response to you. You are pathetic. Get a life. Adding my name to your comments does nothing to make you look any better. The end.

Once again Helen, I respect your courage to say what others have been thinking. I agree with you completely. Keep it up!

  171. Someone posted this up on blackvoices.com… .and this had everyone dyin up in there. but it was the truth. I am going to have to read this blog more often.

  172. You’re funny Calli.

  173. Oh Tara, I don’t need to go to youtube.com I’ve already seen that real hilarious joke. It is so gosh darn funny. Are you a dumb ugly girl who has to make fun of smart pretty women? You do need help don’t you?

  174. Tara, you would agree because you are apparently a person filled with hate too. You might need to get some professional help like me.

  175. Jennifer, He’s right, honey.

  176. One more thing TB, I’m an independant who chose wisely. I know you’ve heard this before but, “What experience does Obama have?” 3 years in the senate where he avoided voting most of the time because he didn’t want his record to show what he really believes? Fact is he is a suave character who has won people over because he is so likable. I do like some of his plans better. For one, the way he doesn’t like the way NAFTA has been for the country. I agree with him on that and some other issues but… I think that McCain’s health care credit is a good idea. It doesn’t bother me if it’s taxed because I am self-employed and don’t have any help from an employer or the government at all right now. I know there are millions just like me. I also like the fact that I will get more back a deduction from my child. I can go on about the “issues” all day. Tell me something you don’t like about McCain and something you like about Obama instead of calling names and making fun of the way they look or the gosh darn way they talk.

  177. I really appreciate every word that you’ve typed. It’s so insulting that this is what McCain and the Republican party have oferred us as the heartbeat away from the presidency! I am absolutely disgusted and have already showed my disgust by having already voted all the way from Guatemala. Thank you for speaking for soooo many of us pissed off Americans.

  178. I have loved reading your blog, and I want to thank you for writing what you are writing. I agree with you 100%. I showed one of my friends your blog entry about Palin being a bitch, and we got into a HUGE fight about it, because he is basically in love with Palin (and isnt afraid to admit it, which is the scary thing). He called it hate speech but I said just because this woman hates Palin does not make this hate speech. Hate speech is an unsubstantiated claim about someone simply because of what they were born to be, not what they have made themselves to be throughout their life with their choices. He fails to understand that distinction.

So I just wanted to say thank you for your insight, I really appreciate it (even if some people dont), and I cant wait to read more!

  179. I think Sarah Palin gave this chick public speaking lessons….

  180. Calli: “Helen, take a picture and post it with you holding a dated paper and then I can believe you. I also think whoever is managing this site is adding a bunch of fake people who claim to love this site and Helen is their hero.”

It doesn’t matter to anyone whether or not you believe if Helen is who she says she is. I wouldn’t care if a purple hemaphrodite wrote this I would still agree.

  181. Hi Helen;

I popped over from a post in a friend’s blog on LiveJournal. I love your viewpoint on things. One of the things I really miss about not having my great gram around anymore (granted it’s been about 10 years or so now) was her point of view and the wisdom that colored it from such a long lifetime of experiences.

The internet is so very full of young people. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us.

  182. oops, I meant queen, honey.

  183. Helen, you are queer. I love you. You are my hero.

  184. Helen,
You are my hero. I love you. I absolutely will be back. Wow, I love the way you speak your mind and call Sarah a bitch. You have such spunk for an old gal.

  185. Here,
let me do a few for you….

  186. Paula,
Are you the gay blog manager? It sounds like it by the way you write, honey.

  187. I still think that there is NO Helen. I think the author of this blog is a young man and I do think he is gay. You can find photos anywhere- attic, garage sales, relatives who passed away. Helen, take a picture and post it with you holding a dated paper and then I can believe you. I also think whoever is managing this site is adding a bunch of fake people who claim to love this site and Helen is their hero. I think that whoeveris managing this site is actually the unhinged being who needs to get professional help. Think hackers and web site managers don’t do unscrupulous things for their candidate? What about Sarah Palin’s email acount being hacked into? You know who did it? A Democratic Senator’s fanatic son. They arrested him. Maybe someone should arrest me. In jail maybe I would be loved and wanted. I am so lonely. Why do you all hate me. I am RIGHT. I am RIGHT. I am RIGHT.

  188. Calli. We don’t care. Seriously honey. We don’t care.

  189. Dear Helen,

Keep it up! I’m sure you get as abig a kick out of the stupid people’s reactions as I do. Take Jonathan, sadly hilarious, he believes what he writes. It’s funny how they get their knickers in such a bunch, over an elderly woman’s point blank blog. I’ve had quite a time, reading these erroneously misled posts and thinking, “These people are not for real, couldn’t be! No way could a real human actually be that stupid!”.

And damn straight on the abortion issue. What gets me is, what about the LIVING CHILDREN. What about them? What about hungry, homeless, healthcareless American children? Why no respect for the LIVING, but all the ruckus over the unborn? Where is the common sense in that? So its okay to kill innocent Iraqi children to keep your gas guzzling SUV up and running is it? SICK SICK SICK. These people are truly demented and quite sick. Until every last child on earth has a warm place to call home and all the foster homes are completely empty, all have access to quality healthcare, an education, and regular healthy meals, I will not listen to a single word an Ant-Choicer has to say. The Children of the World are hurting and they need us. Yet you don’t see the AntiChoicers lining up to help the LIVING. WHAT, ARE THEY UNDESERVING? So what if you think they don’t deserve it because their mom is homeless or a crackhead. Did the child ask for that, and why should they suffer because of their parents illness? What fault of it is theirs? All this bullshit talk of doing what’s right, but then turn their backs on the living is not only inhumane, but absolutely despisable. If they don’t understand this they never will. How many LIVING children must suffer and die while they busy themselves with telling me what to do with my body? Foolish. Why not take on something that you can actually DO something about? Cause they’re not gonna get access to MY womb, EVER. Respect the living!!

You’re right, McStupid and his pathetic subhuman supporters have been eating off the propoganda machine for so long they don’t even know the truth when they eat it anymore. I guess if you’re fed a steady diet of lies and deceipt you learn to expect no more. Sad, stupid people, I almost feel sorry for them…..

Keep setting them up dear, and knocking them out. And all the fuss over your age, or who really wrote this, come on, people, do you really have that much free time on your hands? Wow. If you need something to do, and wanna earn a buck or two, I hear McStupid an Failin’ are actually HIRING their own protesters against our man. How lame is that? They don’t have enough passionate smart people to speak out against O on their own, so they had to bring oin their own recruits! LOL LOL LOL LOL That should make your day!

  190. When I do make arguments, they are erased so I have no more time to spend on this one-sided site that erases or changes my posts.

  191. The only reason my comments seem unhinged is because the person managing this site is either deleting my comments or adding silly statements to them. What a shame to have to do that and not be able to hear someone who doesn’t agree with everything that you do.

  192. HELEN, you’re AWESOME. Keep up the good work. Thank goodness someone else “gets it” when it comes to the McShame/Satan ticket.

  193. The most sane person living in America today. Hats off to you!

  194. Helen… You are wonderful You are indeed saying what millions are thinking, but are too afraid to say it. Keep up the good work.

  195. You couldn’t have laid down the Pro-Choice argument any better!

    Right on!!

  196. Mrs. Philpot…
THANK YOU…THANK YOU THANK YOU. I have been reading many blogs this political season, to mild satisfaction. I somehow stumbled upon your work of art here this morning, and I want to thank you so very much. You are the voice of reason (truth) I have been looking for in this muckety world of politics and yellow journalism. And in regards to all those who are badmouthing you, do as Obama said and just brush that dirt off ya shoulders…

  197. Go get ‘em, Helen!
I like your sailor mouth. The topic is appropriate for emphatic expression.

  198. you are brilliant and wise and wonderful! please keep up the good work! i am grateful!

  199. Jonathan wrote, “… be glad abortion in the 908th trimester is illegal because I would pushing your old ass and your rascal off the deck of that battle ship right into the ocean. Do us all a favor and put that other foot in the grave …”

Yet one more example of how many of those who describe themselves as “pro-life” are nothing of the kind.

Please, do yourself a favor and get professional help. Even if there is no danger of your acting on your unfortunate impulses, it takes a deeply troubled and unhappy mind to conceive of the scenario you described.

  200. My brother-in-law sent me a link to your site from a birding friend, and I am grateful to them both for the introduction.

Thank you for your clear-eyed commonsensical commentary, and for serving as a wonderful example of the joys of growing older. I’m 52 and, in spite of the losses and sorrows (or even perhaps because of them), life gets sweeter with each passing year. It’s nice to meet someone with more life experience under her belt who seems to feel the same way.

I look forward to regularly visiting your blog, and I’ll be interested to hear what you have to say about the next presidential debate!

  201. You are the kind of old lady I intend to be when I grow up!

  202. I actually have watched all the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates to this current point. I plan to watch the third one as well. Honestly, while putting my own personal bias aside, there were times when both candidates (Presidential and Vice-Presidential) failed to answer questions and instead chose to go off on a tangent. This is not a new concept to political debates, it’s just now finally being brought to public attention. Seriously, instead of spending your time ‘ripping’ Palin apart, EVERYONE on this board should be furious that this is how the American political system has always been! Sad…

Secondly, the only reason any of you are going off on gender stereotypes, is because you are affected by them , whether consciously or unconsciously aware of it. Trust me, that was an interesting discussion in psychology on politics, lol. Do any of you think the news media would have ranted about a male candidate leaving a special needs child with his wife? If you were to answer honestly, you would have to say no. There would not have been an additional word mentioned about it. I agree that if anyone pulls a gender card it is pretty pathetic, but I’ve never seen a blatant demostration of it.
Andy, it’s not so much that it is irritating of what people see in newspapers and television, but unfortunately media stations and even several of the articles written are biased in the US. I just find it difficult to believe that if people only use one source instead of several sources without bothering to sift through opinions and facts, how can they say their choice is knowledgeable? Political efficacy is not exactly the strongest point for the majority of Americans.

  203. I am an Indian, landed here from reddit, and you are the cutest! :D Sending another couple thousand people your way from StumbleUpon.com now!!

  204. Hi Helen. :)

New to your blog, but I love every word. Kudos!

Don’t know if you follow The Daily Show, but I think this clip pretty much sums it all up regarding the Palin daughter’s pregnancy:

  205. Oh, and as for ‘It just irritates me that people like you who do not even know her judge her by what you see on television and read in papers’… Are you serious? Palin CHOSE to get into politics, CHOSE to go for VP nominee for the Republicans. Your argument is patently ridiculous. If she were a nice woman who kept her nose out of the press and just got on with life, fair point–but that is one thing Palin is not. You think because you claim to know her, the rest of the world should write about… what… instead? My oh my. If we all held to the kinds of argument you espouse, then Hitler’s mother or cousin might well have spoken out arguing for people to stop dissing her relative. Ridiculous argument.

  206. Does being ‘a beautiful woman with a large family’ make her more worthy than an ugly one? What DID that mean? As for being related, well… It’s a weak start to any point being made.

As for the people being rude about the blogger, this Brit is wondering if Americans know to respect the elderly and in so doing respect themselves? Actually, seeing what goes on over there, I guess I know the answer where many are concerned. Thank goodness there are still decent Americans like this lady telling it like it is. x

  207. I am related to the Palin family and it saddens me that somebody who does not even know them says such harsh words about them. They are a good family and loving people. Sarah is just doing her job, which requires extreme publicity. The people want to know about her life and her family, half the time it is the media making up nonsense and spreading it across the newsstands. All politicians have to deal with this. And for Sarah being the governor of Alaska and being a beautiful woman with a large family sure gets hit hard. It just irritates me that people like you who do not even know her judge her by what you see on television and read in papers. Under all of that is a great person. Alaska is a great place and if you took time to read about our economics and way of life in some of these small villages then you would understand the reasoning for our steep dividends this year. I love my family as I am sure you do.

  208. Thank you, wonderful as always. Can’t wait for the next post!

  209. I love your post Helen!! Or better yet my wife and I love it. Please keep us informed or give us your insight with your wisdom and intelligence.

Those sore losers who called you names just simply don’t have values and its sad they go down to that level and not be respectful.

Ohh and please work with Margaret. Show her the light and above all make sure so this NIGHTMARE doesn’t come true. Please make sure we all vote come Nov 4th.

    God Bless!!!

  210. Smooches to you, Helen! You are right on the money.

  211. you go, Ms. Helen. you are a total inspiration to some of us who are “young” and have had BFFs for over 25 years! my BFF & i might not always agree but we speak our minds.

you keep speaking. it’s your voice that is the voice that matters most. stuff anyone else.

  212. I did as I was told and watched the debate. :) It didn’t change my mind at all – Obama/Biden all the way!

Another great post – you sailed it out of the ball park. Again. I’ll be back to see what you’ve written next.

  213. Dear Helen–

You are insightful, candid and witty. Your wisdom shines through. Thanks for publishing your thoughts. Your blog is heartening for this 42 year old mom to read.

  214. God gives gifts to all of us. To some he gives the gift of discernment. Apparently none of you have received that gift.

  215. I LOVE YOU!

  216. bless you and all you hold dear. what a nice post. you are the same age as my mother and the emails I get from her are Black Monopoly and “get Immigrants off My Lawn” type.

  217. Helen,

You are the best! Please keep up the great post, you say what needs to be said so eloquently.

  218. I must say, I do agree with most of the last two posts. I think Mrs. Pallin is horrifically unqualified, bitchy and lying. It is nice to know that some one has the courage to stand up and say something. As a young man in a college area, I am surrounded by women full of feminist values, all of which I respect. But just as with any other group, I feel that many use the tenuousness of majority’s grasp on what is and is not acceptable behavior and speech to their unfair advantage, actually reversing the rolls and suppressing the majority groups. The point is equality for all, not a reversal of rolls.
Sarah Pallin epitomizes these unfortuante habits. She claims to stand for women everywhere, then plays the women card any time she is criticized. When one cannot answer a question relating to international relations, their gender has nothing to do with their ability to answer, and most people I have met will not judge her answer based on gender stereotypes. Either she can or cannot answer, and calling her out on her inability to answer even the smiliest questions that are relevant to assisting the running of this country is not a sexist slurs.
Her lack of qualifications are real, her claims are false, both about her abilities, her history of progress, and her statements about others. These are the reason I will not vote for her, and her abject bitchiness just make me feel better about the choice.

  219. Ok everyone. Get off this web page blog and go watch the debate. My grandson said he took care of the nasty comments that didn’t have anything to do with my blog so I hope that fixes things. I don’t think he changed anyone’s words. He just made them go away. Everyone is welcome to leave comments but even my sailor mouth has limits and some of you are just not right in the head. I read every comment. I really do and I think you are all great.

Go watch the debates and then come back. Thank you.

  220. she is a bitch and i love your blog
im about fed up with the McPalin Klan Rallys that been congregating in safe cities thru out the US

    Just like Brigitte Bardot said

I love and agree with her comments below.
    Love her spirit!

Brigitte Bardot: Sarah Palin Is “A Disgrace For Women”

    AFP | October 7, 2008 02:24 PM

French film legend-turned-activist Brigitte Bardot took a swipe at Sarah Palin on Tuesday, saying the US vice presidential candidate was a disgrace to women.

“I hope you lose these elections because that would be a victory for the world,”

  222. I think you’re fantastic. A friend of mine on Facebook sent me the link to your blog, and I plan to read it every day. I’d like to think that when I’m 82 I’ll be this progressive. You’re awesome and an inspiration!

  223. You give me hope for growing older without getting softer. Kick some ass, lady.

  224. I saw a link to your blog on Twitter and came here and read and knew after the first sentence you are my kind of woman. I wish my mother were here to read your blog too–she’d have been 79 in September and I know she’d have agreed with everything you wrote.

Keep up the good work! I’m going to be a faithful reader from now on. (I’m almost 58 and the idea of President Palin getting her claws on the Supreme Court is greying what’s left of my hair.)

  225. Grrll…you are fabulous! I’m hoping your honest blog has inspired my very young 86-year old mother (a great-grandma) to start her own blog. Keep opening your mouth! You’re on the right track! Oh, and that Sarah-bitch….she’s a mere pimple in history. YES WE CAN!!

  226. Thank you, Helen, for speaking the truth about Palin…..you started quite a blog here and can’t wait to read your comments about the debate tonight!

  227. I work with seniors and most of them can’t get this through their heads. They actually thought Sarah did a better job than Joe. They thought that she answered the questions.
You are great. :). Keep writing. You are an inspiration.

  228. Best Blog Ever!!!!

  229. Helen I so respect what you have to say! Anyone who has been around as long as you has a unique perspective and decades of wisdom to back up your words. Palin does NOT represent me or what I stand for. She’s set women’s rights back into the Dark Ages. And McCain has consistantly voted against anything that would help women.

I think the conservatives have unleashed a monster in her. She’s no longer content with VP – she wants the top spot and that’s a terrifying thought considering her evangelical origins!!! She thinks the end times are here and would no doubt love to hurry them along with a few well-placed missiles!

These are scary times! I’ve never felt such a sense of urgency regarding an election before. Please think carefully about your vote!!!

  230. Fanny:

Don’t get me wrong, without seeing any real point to her arguments in the next couple posts, I’ll advise the same.

But I’m willing to give a chance to actually talk about something important first.

Good friend of mine once told me “Civilized discourse is necessary to the survival of democracy. Lacking multiple views, it will stagnate and slowly die. (not that it might not anyways, but that’s a financial matter :S)

  231. You are wonderful, Helen. I am so happy you are speaking your mind, and so happy that people are responding the way they are. Sometimes one can feel very lonely with their thoughts!

I am 67, and writing from Arizona where I have been for 25 years. I was pleased that McCain packed up his people and left my home state of Michigan! I’m proud of Michiganders for under-standing where their problems lie. I hope Obama/Biden will be able to return that state to a powerful manufacturing state again! As for Arizona – I would be so proud to see my fellow Arizonans turn the state blue. GO BLUE! The youngsters may save us from ourselves. XO

Keep writing and expressing yourself Helen. It looks like you’ve made more than a few new friends!

  232. Besides which, Max, being here and rambling on the way she is and crapping bricks over every last thing that is said, isn’t helping her. If things here bother her so much, she should just walk away. Clearly, it’s not doing much for her sanity.

  233. Pfft. If she thinks she’s having issues, then she should be phoning SOMEONE for some help. A mental health line allows her anonymity but allows her to get some advice and possibly some real help. I hope she seeks it out.

  234. Fanny:

    That’s hardly helpful.

  235. First of all, Helen:
Sorry I’ve been taking up a good deal of your blogspace, but my love for arguing is hard to deny. So long as you don’t mind, I’ll continue.

    Now, then…

    Jonathan and troll:

You both seem to boil down the entire blog entry to “Palin’s a bitch (and in troll’s case, her family sucks)” doing so disregards 99% of the entry and shows a real lack of understanding of what you’re trying to criticize, invalidating what substantive arguments you try to put forward. I recommend you reread it to find the laundry list of defects pointed at the Republican VP candidate.

Calli: I truly do wish that terrible part in your life did not happen to you. I honestly mean that. The choice issue was already touched upon, so I won’t go further into that.

The fact that you’re a biblical literalist means you and I will fundamentally disagree on a few things that are central to the choice issue, and I know I cannot change your mind.

If you wish to keep arguing, I’m willing to continue, so long as you keep to the issues and not resort to name-calling (I’ve no doubt more than toed the line, but I do my best).

  236. Dear Helen,
How does it feel to be famous? Bet you didn’t expect all this when you wrote that letter. What you said about choice is spot on and I loved it. It’s interesting to me that, for the most part, people who want to remove our choice would be outraged if we took away their right to bear arms.

For all those who don’t believe Helen could be 82 — get out and meet some one outside your generation. My 95 year old great aunt is right there with you Helen — just wish I could get her on the computer to enjoy your page!

  237. Well, at least you recognize you’re unhinged. Now it’s time to seek help. Call your local mental health line. Good luck, Calli.

  238. I knew my mom (Onedia) would comment here, and like your “sailor mouth” just fine! (She used to be in the Navy, herself.) I appreciate you sharing your unabashed opinion of Alaska’s governor with the world, and got a kick out of reading just how you did it. Your observations are on the mark, and clearly shared by many. I look forward to your review of tonight’s debate, especially since I won’t get to watch them live.
P.S. Did you hear that Palin publicly credited a Kenyan “witch-hunter” (and I mean that title literally) for helping her get elected governor?

  239. Helen….each one of your posts is better and better!!! You are awesome!!

  240. Johnathon,
You are so right. They cracked me up until I got pissed when a hacker started changing my comments. Have any of yours been changed or added to? Do you still love me?

  241. YOU GO! It is great to hear from you gals from the old school of “say it like it is”. And, you’re right. Sarah Palin is a brainless bitch. It is national embarassment that she was seriously nomiated for V.P. and will be even more humiliating if she is eventually elected. Love your blog and have it bookmarked.

  242. I was so encouraged by your blog…sometimes I feel like there aren’t enough of us women who see the Governor for what she really is. I’m 21 and right now I’m trying not to be terrified about the future. Sarah Palin wears womanhood as if it were a costume and clearly doesn’t know what it means to be a strong female. I shudder to think of the kind of influence she could have on my peers and those younger than me if she were elected…she is certainly no role model. To be the first woman Vice President would be a slap in the face to our sex.

I have hope, though, and we must all have hope. We’ve risen above worse things in our history, and together (by voting) we can rise above this nonsense.

Thank you and bless you for your raising your voice, Helen.

  243. Came here through Monkey Muck’s blog – love your writing. Please keep up the great commentary on this mess of an election!

  244. Helen, I think you are my new hero. Your blog brought some cheer to my day. Have a lovely week.

  245. Well said!
Too bad McBush wasn’t bright enough to pick you as VP… He might even have gotten my vote! :-)

  246. Leslie B

I do not live in the same state as Helen. I believe she lives in Denial. I often visit, but have never have lived there.

  247. Bravo! Well said, Helen. Thank you! We feel the same way.
    More power to you!

  248. Jonathan – It only works that way if you live in the same state. Each state gets counted separately for the electoral college; that’s why it’s possible for a candidate to win the popular vote and still lose the election.

‘Course, you might live in the same state as Helen, I don’t know.

  249. Did anyone else see Palin’s expression as Biden was tearing up? She was so busy reading her cue cards (with a pasted on smile I might add) that she did not seem in the moment at all. She was so into trying to read and memorize things that she wasn’t aware of what was being talked about. Well… I guess we could say that for the entire debate.

  250. Haha these comments crack me up. Summarized it basically says, “Way to call Palin a bitch, God bless you!”

  251. “And Jonathan -

Who the heck educated you about the election process? Her vote cancels out yours???? Ever hear of the electoral college?”

Ever hear of math? It’s the total number of votes for a candidate that wins the electoral college pick. I vote one way, she votes another we cancel each other out. So yea my McCain vote cancels one Obama vote. Which is a beautiful thing.

  252. AWESOME Helen, just awesome.

  253. Helen,
I think you’re FAB!!!! Thanks for telling it like it is. I only hope that I can be as sharp as you are if I’m so lucky to live to 82!! Your blog is on my favorites now and I will be reading it regularly. I’m sure your grandson knows how lucky he is to have you. I recently became a grandmother (she’s only 2 – I’m 51) and I hope that I can be the same kind of grandma to my granddaughter. God Bless You!!

  254. Dearest Helen:

Thank you for being so honest and direct. It is very refreshing to know that even older US citizens are not fooled by this political non-sense.

  255. Of course this blog is about the election. Helen’s comments created it. I simply was directed here from the SNL site. I have voiced my opinions and have been ganged up on from 99% of the people on this site because they are for Obama or because I didn’t proof my comment and forgot an a or mispelled a word. Go ahead and tell Helen you love her and she’s your hero because she cuts down Palin’s family and calls her names. Takes a lot of guts to cut someone’s children down. If my children make mistakes, I wouldn’t want some self-righteous grandma poking fun at them. Go McCain! Palin, nice hair, keep teasin’ it – I love it- Good thing you have tough skin! Glad my eyes were opened and I changed my vote.

  256. Oh, yeah, Helen……one more thing. As our economy tanks, and our retirement accounts fade away with the stock market, did you see this?

“When you graduate 894th out of a class of 899, eventually it will show up.

“And John McCain’s mediocre performance at the Naval Academy is showing up big time this week in his total lack of understanding of the nation’s financial crisis.

“He told us he didn’t know much about the economy… now he’s proving it.

“So much so that the Wall Street Journal, perhaps America’s leading financial publication, is blasting McCain over what its editorial board sees as inaccurate and, ‘unpresidential’ comments about the crisis in America’s financial system.

“If you’re a Republican running for president of the United States and the Wall Street Journal basically says you’re an incompetent buffoon, you’re in serious trouble.”

  257. You GO girl! I was linked to your last post and I’m adding you to one I read often.

  258. I just read your blog for the first time and it is awesome. You are my new hero. I agree 100%

  259. This is my new favorite blog. I will be checking back regularly. You go girls.

  260. Helen!

Bless you for your heartfelt words. Long may you write and speak the truth!

Today’s blog caught my eye: “The only comments that really made me mad were the fools that came here preaching the bible and all that pro-life crap. Most pro-life nut cases need to actually get a life and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. Sarah Palin had the choice to talk to her daughter about sex….”

Today, I just “Googled” some questions I had about Sarah Palin, “you betcha”, to find this:

“Todd and Sarah eloped on August 29, 1988, to avoid the cost of a wedding.” (http://marriage.about.com/od/politics/p/sarahpalin.htm)

The birth date of their first child, Track, is given as April 20, 1989. (http://www.alan.com/2008/08/29/conservative-family-values/)

That’s about 8 months later, and there’s no mention of Track being either a preemie or full-term.

Personally, I don’t really care about any of the Palin family’s reproductive choices. It’s their business–just like it is the business of other Americans who have the same right to choose for themselves.

However, I take strong exception to the hypocrisy of Palin appointing herself as the country’s latest arbiter of morals. Miss Abstinence had her first-born just eight months after her quickie marriage. Maybe he was a preemie, but the timing and circumstances are just so curious, aren’t they?

And then, of course, the 17-year old Palin daughter now follows with her own “out of wedlock” pregnancy. That whole quickie marriage idea didn’t work for her, I guess. Jus’ kinda makes ya want to ask: “How’s that abstinency thing working for ya, Governor? It just seems like the ol’ apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Yeah, you betcha!” (wink, wink)

Meanwhile, the Christian fundamentalists just overlook all that “fornication” stuff. Let’s just not look at THAT part of the Bible, okay, because they are like us, one with us, we want them, and aren’t they cute, too? (Wink, wink)

    What absolute hypocrisy.

If, by some terrible chance, these two brainiacs (the “Palin-McCain” ticket as she called it the other day) gain dominion over the rest of the United States, they will immediately eviscerate our laws and overturn women’s rights.

Separation of church and state? Not a chance….

Bush has only begun the damage to the U.S., as our economy falls apart and our men and women die in the Middle East due to lies and lack of planning, which will just be magnified a thousand times over by the Palin/McCain White House.

Yeah, that’s how the governor referred to the ticket the other day…Uh-huh. She wants to be in the TOP position. That ought to excite all those rednecks and right-wing fornicators and adulterers who “think” with their penis.

The rest of us who think with our brains have had enough.

    Vote Obama.

  261. Also, just in case you don’t know folks there are half a dozen blogs out there dedicated to opposing Sarah Palin check out

    bless them.

There are plenty of us writing and raising our voices against this travesty of judgment.

Helen I am adding you to my”New Finds” blogroll .

  262. “I am so surprised at how many of you have come to my little web page blog. People didn’t think I was 82 so I thought maybe you couldn’t see the pictures but then someone called me old and fat so I guess you can.”

Oh Helen, your wit knows NO bounds!

  263. You go, Girl! Love your blog! I’m subscribing to it in my Reader

  264. I love you. I mean that. : )

  265. My daughter (23) sent me to your sight. Will you be my New Best Blogging Friend For Life. My mantra is Speak your mind even if your voice trembles or your finger hesitates over the enter key. I bet your voice doesn’t tremble. Love it. So glad I found you. I agree with your sentiments. I have a close friend who has different ideas than me about Palin and we just don’t discuss it cause good friends are hard to keep.

Keep writing and I will keep reading.

  266. Troll, From reading the previous entries, I think her blog was serving its purpose just fine before internet celebrity was forced on Helen, and when this is all over it will go back to doing exactly what it was put here to do. Allow two very long time friends to keep up with each other.

That will happen when Obama wins and would have in the alternate universe where McCain had a shot, too.

  267. Calli

Obviously you were scarred by being forced to have an abortion. I can imagine having that forced upon you was horrible, since it was not your decision. However, forcing someone to continue a pregnancy, deliver, and raise a child that they are not ready and willing to love, can also have traumatic consequences – for both the mother & the child. Please realize that’s why, as women, that it’s important that it remain OUR CHOICE.

And, (please note that no sarcasm is intended) I think that it’s important that you seek counseling for what you have been through. It’s amazing how much rage comes through on your posts.

  268. Thanks a million! FINALLY someone expressed my thoughts to the t. And, slowly but surely, and often in a very sneeky way, women’s rights and freedoms are going down the drain. An 82 year old lady can see that. Where are you the young generation? You are too busy following the Paris Hilton’s and Sarah Palin’s of the World. WAKE UP! SNAP OUT OF IT!

  269. Your little blog will be pitiful and useless when McCain wins.

  270. Trolls. I like the sound of that. How funny. Thank you.

  271. Amen Midwest!!!

  272. Oh come on people. This whole blog – this whole bunch of posts is because of the Election we have coming up. Do you all really have to pick apart each other’s grammar, spelling and punctuation?

That is so childish and shows you really have no point to what you are saying – you’re just being childish and petty. Get on with it. Talk about the debates or the election. Talk about the candidates, but damn lay off the minute stuff…

Well I guess this post doesn’t help – but it’s so silly to be reading some damn good talking points and opinions from so many of you and then little petty stuff from the other half.

Why do all posts eventually become this nonsense of trying to piss each other off?

  273. Helen – thank you. Not sure how long you’ve been blogging, but people like Jonathan and Calli are called Trolls. They go to sites they disagree with, and spew whatever comes to their minds just to get a rise out of the usual readers/commenters. Pay them no mind – just keep doing what you’re doing! (and consider the fact that they’re here is actually a compliment – you’re hitting a nerve!)

  274. Rock on, granny! Fight the good fight!!! :)

    PS – I hope I’m as sane as you when I’m 82!!!

  275. I’m not offended. I am just trying to help you understand that if you want people to listen to you, it helps if you consider your language. Also, you forgot a space between the “a” and “little” in “alittle.” Cheers.

  276. I wish my mother and grandmother were alive to read these posts, written by a grandmother in her 80s. I’m certain that my grandmother especially, who pulled herself up the corporate ladder in the 1950s, would have appreciated it.

  277. I love your posts Helen. I have read almost all of these blogs. (Ignoring some of the more ignorant posts one here. It’s sad you can tell the ignorant people from one little post.)

You are a very wise woman and you have stated pretty much everything my husband and I have been thinking. We’re both 27.

Keep on posting!! I am enjoying reading all of your comments. You are very blunt – and I love that!!! If you can’t speak your mind in this country then where does that leave us??

    Obama/Biden 08

  278. Yes L word, I find that odd as well. Somehow God stepped aside and allowed them to pick and choose who deserves life, and who deserves death. Like someone said previously…when it’s time for judgement & redemption, I sincerely hope God sees it your way. If not, you’re toast.
Helen, I admire your courage to be honest. I’m a little scared of that guy up there making death threats though. He too is a little “unhinged” as you say. And Calli, your anger is at your parents for making you do what you claim, thereby removing your CHOICE. Every female, regardless of age, deserves a choice.

  279. Anonymous,

I appreciate your ability to recognize the lack of objectivity in the news media. Fox is like bad entertainment news, and CNN and the other major networks show only what’s relevant to the USA. Don’t give up on the BBC and NPR, though!

When you choose — and luckily for us we can all choose — to engage in whatever randomness you’re on about, check your spelling… and check yourself. Practice tolerance and be respectful. Thank you.

  280. Dear Helen,
Thank you for stating what, obviously, many have felt but have not articulated. Palin is a disgraceful choice of VP. She has spewed lie after lie and no one in mainstream media has called her on it. If a man said half of what she has said they would have been tossed from the ring. I did think “bitch” was too strong a term until I heard Palin’s little speech associating Mr. Obama with terrorist. Now I am in complete agreement.
I support pro-choice because I believe every woman has the right to privacy and the right to choose, one way or the other. My beliefs are not the same as my neighbors and why should my beliefs be anymore valid then his/hers.
Helen – please keep blogging if only to exersize your right to free speech. The fact that pro-Palin/McCain supporters find you and your opinion irritating is just a wonderful side benefit.
    Thanks – Susan

  281. Helen,

Given the reaction you’re getting, you seem to have said what a great many others are thinking and/or feeling, even if you have used language they wouldn’t.

I have many worries regarding Governor Palin, not least of which is that she doesn’t appear qualified to run your country; a distinct possibility given Senator McCain’s age and previous health problems.

Some would say that my concerns aren’t relevant, as a Canadian living in London I don’t have a vote. But those who run the US have an impact on us all and I feel it’s important to pay attention to these things.

Keep up the posts. I’m eager to read what you think of tonight’s debate.

    All the best.

  282. Christina, I think it’s more that it’s a blog. I’m not sure how many 82-year-old bloggers there are. It would be wonderful if there were more!

  283. Helen,
by the way you write, I would gues you not only to be a man, but to be a black young man. Please come out.

  284. Now YOU are a testament to what it means to be a real woman, and a real feminist. With my utmost respect, keep fighting the good fight. I hope I’m just like you when I’m 85. Except when I’m 85, my life journey through feminism will be set back by this DISASTER. On a serious note, Palin and the McCain ticket that put her there are more offensive to you than I could ever understand. I’ve watched women scrape their way up for 27 years. You, for 85…. And for THIS? At any rate…. we will prevail, don’t you worry. RIGHT will win over the right with my generation at the helm. We’ve got you covered! GOD BLESS YOU! And while I’m at it… I am a Christian, I love Jesus, and the greatest gift he gave me here on earth is my free will – my CHOICE and the choices that I make every day. I applaud you for defending every human’s right to love that gift.

  285. I find it… interesting? sad? that so many people are surprised an 82 year old woman writes this blog, that some don’t even believe it’s your age. As if somehow living 82 years doesn’t make you well-spoken, fearless and bursting with outspoken ideas and commentary. I say it is because an 82 year old woman with wisdom and the better part of a century of observation of this country wrote this that readers of this blog should think hard on what is being said. And while it was probably meant as a compliment, it seems insulting to thnk that fury dies and apathy takes over as you get older.

  286. You rock!!! As I said after watching her, “If Katie Couric can make you look stupid, guess what? You’re stupid.” It’s not like Katie, bless her heart, is any great genius.

Keep saying it like it is.

  287. McCain/Palin and the right-wingers are so concerned about the unborn babies…yet fully support the death penalty in most cases. Odd.

  288. Calli, honey. As far as I am concerned everyone is welcome to leave whatever comments they want to here. I don’t mind. But honey I think you are a bit unhinged and maybe you should consider reading more and commenting less. Just a thought. Thanks for stopping by.

  289. You are an absolute inspiration to me and all this crap people are posting is completely insignificant. Conservatives! BE CONSERVATIVE AND LEAVE EVERYONE ELSE ALONE!!!!!! You don’t see me trying to pass legislation for my 17 year old pregnant drug addicted sister to be FORCED TO GET AN ABORTION. The best interest of the child and my sister and society and tax payers and schools etc would be to TERMINATE THE SEED THAT WILL PREVENT IT FROM EVER BECOMING A BABY. Tolerance and communication are what makes this country beautiful. STOP TRYING TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US. If you don’t believe in abortion- DONT HAVE ONE. If you don’t believe in sexual education to prevent the transmission of AIDS, STDS as well as stop unwanted pregnancy- HOME SCHOOL YOUR KID (and hopefully once they are of age they can get some other perspectives and make an EDUCATED DECISION). If you believe in god or whatever GO TO CHURCH. the problem with you people is that you don’t let anyone live the way they feel is right as long as they don’t infringe on the rights of others. ALL YOU DO IS TRY TO MESS WITH MY RIGHTS. You are hypocritical ignorant intolerant hate mongers and your candidates illustrate this point far better than I ever could. Helen, you should run for VP girlfriend! 2 4 6 8! SEPARATE- CHURCH AND STATE!

  290. http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Sarah_Palin_Abortion.htm

  291. Hilarious Palin song on Youtube.

Helen you rock and your comments are right on the money!

  292. Helen, you’re awesome. Thank you for your honesty and bravery — you reflect the true spirit of America.

  293. ptrap,
Are you saying that you know what I have seen and what I have done in my lifetime? Apparently, you think you do. According to your comments, you are way unaware. Don’t assume you know something. UNAWARE and silly comment

  294. Calli, you weren’t given a choice in your situation, which is extremely sad, and seems to be something that weighs heavily on you. Why would you want to take all choice away from every other girl in your position? I would think you would want to make sure they can all make whatever choice is best for them.

  295. ok Max,
How would you stand on my history?
I was raped at 15, told to get an abortion by family. I didn’t have an opinion. I got an abortion since that’s what my family wanted. Today, I can’t get over murdering an innocent baby. I have repented and asked God’s forgiveness. That is why I feel so strongly about this issue in the election and about Helen’s comment about, “pro-life crap”.

  296. “Have you ever seen an aborted baby in a trash can? That’s crap! To see his head torn off of his fully formed little body is crap.”

No I haven’t seen that, Calli and neither have you. You saw some crappy Photoshopped picture created just to get you and your kind all worked up and mad and start marching around Planned Parenthoods with signs and guns.

Stay out my reproductive business, thank you very much. I can make my own decisions in that arena. I don’t need YOUR opinions or beliefs to include MY life.

    Go Helen! Keep it real!!!

  297. I hope that I’m half as cool as you are when I’m in my 80s.

  298. yeah, Max,
It was unclear since I am a lady.
I don’t have to get far in the debate. I believe everything the Bible says. Yes, Literally. That’s my whole point.

  299. To be clear, I’m of the roe v. wade opinion (first trimester is up to mom, second is only rape or incest, third is saving the mom), since a woman should not be told what to do with her body. I respect your choice, but I hope you would respect others’.

  300. Ok, Calli, I was making an unclear joke to call you a girl’s name, as you were calling Hellen a guy’s.

    In any case…

When life start is one of the most entrenched and hotly debated issues in modern politics/philosophy.

Not saying you might not have a point, but I am saying you probably won’t get far.

  301. I’d vote for you in a heartbeat!

  302. Sorry, that comment above was to Max a million

  303. Carrie,
I’m sorry you don’t know how the system works.
Are you aware that babies don’t have to be in the last trimester to live? You are telling me that fully formed little bodies are only in the 3rd t.m? Tell that to my 17 year old son who was born prematurely and is perfectly healthy.

  304. Dear Helen,

If you ran for President I would vote for YOU!!!

    You rock supreme!

  305. Aww, sounds like somebody needs to call the wambulance for lil’ Calli there.

  306. Right on!! Don’t let any of the conservative Palin lovers intimate you (which clearly you won’t). The truth hurts and if any of the “Joe Six Packs” that find Palin like one of them, they better take a closer look. As soon as she has more power she’ll piss all over you – guaranteed. Just look at her track record. And she is no more qualified to be VP than that racoon you wanted to shoot. She needs to stay in Alaska so she can keep her gun pointed at Russia.

  307. Carri:

“Aborted baby in a trash can” eh? I wasn’t aware that’s how the system worked…

You ARE aware that “fully formed little bodies” are only there in the third trimester, in which abortion can only be performed to save the mother. And no candidate is endorsing killing the mother.

  308. oooh, making some lefties mad. Good. They aren’t the only ones who have an opinion. I can be online with arguing all I want. Maybe I’ll do what many here are doing, giving themselves different names.

  309. Ok Harry,
You say “pro-life crap”. Have you ever seen an aborted baby in a trash can? That’s crap! To see his head torn off of his fully formed little body is crap. What about babies who were supposed to be aborted but were born alive? Obama doesn’t want them to have a voice or health care.

  310. So Helen, I mean Harry, You think that Gwen is going to be non biased in after debate comments? Give me a break. If Obama gets in, it will mean she makes more money selling her book. She was actually more fair as a debate moderator than I expected.

  311. Why don’t you all take this arguing off line and not post all this shit on Helen’s page. This isn’t a CHAT ROOM!

  312. Wow Calli. You’re quite ridiculous. Obviously you’re brainwashed by McCain/Palin just as the rest of their supporters are. You must not do research on the candidates because if you did then you would realize that you’re completely wrong.

What if it were a fake site anyway? The views and opinions Ms. Helen(26 yr old black man according to you) has expressed are correct. I’d quit watching Fox (faux) news and find some real media to watch/read in order to get some ACCURATE info on the candidates.

  313. You didn’t make a point, Peg. What was it? …to not vote because it doesn’t count?

  314. Thanks for making my point for me, Calli.

  315. You are AWESOME, Helen! God bless you, I agree with you 100%.

  316. Oh, Peg is such an intellectual. As though Johnathon didn’t know what an electoral college is. What’s your point? Don’t vote? Hopefully, the electoral college represent us voters.

  317. You said it, Max!

  318. @Calli:

If you’ve an actual argument, I’d be willing to listen to it, but since you’re so far completely devoid of one, go cry somewhere else.

  319. Helen,
I am adding this site as one of my favs because you are so insightful and can voice your opinion so refreshingly….blah ….blah… blah
What a bunch of baloney. Phooooey gosh darnit.

  320. Most of the media is bought too.

  321. Faker site.

  322. This is a fake site.

  323. Go Helen, I mean Harry!

  324. I was just sent this link by a friend and I only have one thing to say…Helen, you’re the best!!! Reading this blog is the most refreshing thing I’ve done since this whole media circus election started!!

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say and your website is now on my favorites list!! Keep saying it and don’t let anyone – ANYONE – stop you!!

And please continue to ignore your detractors. They obviously have nothing else to do in their lives but to insult a woman with the courage to voice her opinion and continually visit a website they hate just to stir up trouble. And they think that kind of behavior makes them “better”?

The world needs more people like you. “To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards out of men.” – Abraham Lincoln

  325. Helen,
I bet you are a 26 yr old black man.

  326. Helen,
You are such a genious. Wow. What insight- calling her a bitch. You are truly a sign from god. What god? Not my God.

  327. Well said! I’m 26 & I don’t ever want to know what it’s like for women to not have a choice.

  328. Helen, you should be named the first wonder of the world who can candidly state what many, many people, except Johathan, wish would be said in a very loud voice to be heard nation-wide, even world wide. The world is watching what is going on in this presidential election and they are laughing their collective heads off at McCain’s selection of a running mate. I might add that the world is freighten that they might be elected and that sure scares the heck out of everybody. Helen, keep on truckin’. Don’t let anybody hold you back.

  329. And Jonathan -

Who the heck educated you about the election process? Her vote cancels out yours???? Ever hear of the electoral college?

  330. P.S. Remind Margaret that John McSame will be cutting into her Medicare if he’s elected. With his 10 houses and Palin’s $1.2 million net worth, how could they have ANY understanding of how elders of our community depend on services like Medicare and Social Security? If McSame and Bush had gotten their way, that Social Security money would have been invested into the stock market today…the same one he doesn’t believe should be regulated to help protect the hard working schmucks like us that weren’t handed everything on a silver platter.

  331. It’s a sad world where people would stop an 82 year old woman from speaking her mind, and a sadder one where she has to because the media won’t.

  332. Helen,

Will you please moderate a debate?

    Red Wing, MN

  333. You rock, Helen! Strong women, like you, like my mother and older sisters and all those who’ve gone before and fought for the rights and privledges I have today, are my heroes. Sarah Palin has done nothing to advance the cause of women in the country – she’s a giant step backwards and makes me cringe with her ridiculous behavior and inability to string words into a sentance. How can the women and men of this country ever TRUELY stand side by side if asking a female politician the hard questions and not letting her “cutesy” her way out of them is seen as being “mean” or sexist? Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, Indira Ghandi – they never winked and flirted to get elected.

Keeping blogging, Helen! The world needs more people like you!

  334. “And Jonathan. Your post is laughable. You have no substance with which to base your stances so instead you verbally attack an 82 year old woman? I’m sure that your grandparents would be proud.”

Ahh yes, laughable indeed. I laughed after I wrote it, quite the “haha” fest I might add!

True, the greatest sign of a man without the slightest intelligent thing to say is the ad hominem retort.

So allow me to state my views clearly. Palin might be daft. Helen are candid just because of her age, not because of what she said.

  335. Helen,

I, like many others, found the link to your blog on the NBC website and let me tell you, I am SO THANKFUL to whoever posted it. Your words said exactly what I had been thinking but couldn’t express. I am 24 and this is my first time voting (horrible, I know) but unfortunately it took Bush’s destruction to make me realize how important it is to vote.

“I like strong women… worship them… It’s actually the opposite. She is a weak, pathetic woman who thinks big hair, winking, baby talk and self deprecation is somehow becoming of a woman who wants to lead the free world.” I couldn’t agree with you more. Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying the truth.

I will be passing along the link to your blog…more power to you!

  336. “Further, quick note to all the detractors. Legally speaking? Not to mention as regards etiquette?”

Etiquette? This is the internet. That wasn’t a threat it was answer to what I took as a challenge!

“Shoot. I’m 82 and have been called much worse by much better.”

Nice to meet you, I am Much Better, and will call you much worse.

Sure, she has a right to opinion. I went overboard, wait… no in my comment she went overboard. Now I am confused.

Her Obama vote cancels out my McCain vote and vice versa, that is if she can drag her ass to the polls.

  337. Mike Royko once said; ” If you are going to tell someone the truth, you had better make them laugh or they might kill you.”
You have a very clear and direct writing style and it is exactly what is needed in this country right now.
As regards Palin, I prefer a southern description that she is dumber than a piss ant. (pr. piss’nt)
    Keep on rolling.

  338. JamesWilliams…To group people’s personalities together based on their political leanings is foolish. There will always be corrupt and “mean” people on both sides of everything. It is such juvenile logic and wreaks of vast generalizations and stereotypes; the basis for gender, sexual, and racial discrimination.

And Jonathan. Your post is laughable. You have no substance with which to base your stances so instead you verbally attack an 82 year old woman? I’m sure that your grandparents would be proud.

Helen, I would just say that I absolutely love your blog. It is so fiery and passionate. I hope that when I reach your age I have half the zest for life (and politics) that you do.

  339. John you laughed at it and you loved it. If I got your blood pumping then good.

  340. You know what, you may be a little mean-spirited. And you probably could have said what you said in a nicer way. But you’re 82 years old, and if you want to say it the way you said it, who could stop you if they wanted to. Personally, you did say exactly what was on my mind, but I’m not 82 so I say it a lot nicer. Boy, am I jealous of you…

  341. Helen,

Thanks! You are exactly the kind of woman I’ve always looked up to. Those women willing to call it like they see it and not back down.

Like John, my husband and I both are adding your blog to our list of daily must check sites.

  342. Helen, you ROCK!!!

  343. Further, quick note to all the detractors. Legally speaking? Not to mention as regards etiquette?

Disapproval of someone who has put herself forth for public approval? Perfectly okay and 100% legal

Vaguely offhand threatening to push an 82-year-old woman off the deck of a battleship? Rude, nasty and frankly you’re a disgrace to your species.

  344. My God woman, you’re fabulous. Don’t let the a-holes get you down. I’m adding your blog to my permanent reading list. Thanks for being here!!

  345. I’ve told friend for years that liberals, though they like to portray themselves as the compassionate ones, are really the most mean-spirited people out there. Helen’s comments about Palin is just the latest example.

  346. You have been called everything, or so you think right? Well be glad abortion in the 908th trimester is illegal because I would pushing your old ass and your rascal off the deck of that battle ship right into the ocean. Do us all a favor and put that other foot in the grave, bitch.

  347. Again, Helen, you are sharp as ever and you have no reason to take back what you said about her. You give people a reason to not fear aging, seeing as you are more astute than many younger people I know. Thanks for being honest and an inspiration. I love ya!

  348. Helen,

THANK YOU for taking the time to write down your thoughts. After finding this link on the SNL website, I find that I’ve enjoyed all your posts. I really hope you write up your thoughts on the debate tonight as you have a rare gift for sifting through political BS and getting to the nitty-gritty. The country needs clear thinkers and bold truth-tellers right now, and you’re definitely helping in that. God bless.

  349. Wow. It must be Monday! The above should have said above and not about! I think I will shut up now. Anyway, judge for yourselves.

  350. Can I be like you when I grow up?

  351. Excuse me, the about should have said WON not one. I usually check spelling before I send something but this one excited me. Sorry.

  352. You definitely hit the nail on the head. She is definitely a moran and could one day be our president if the moran’s in our nation vote for them!! We might as well say goodbye to our freedoms and our country if that were too happen. It really upset me to see the analysis of the debat saying she one and she did a great job. I don’t think she really answered any questions asked except maybe two! God help our nation if it falls into her hands. Thanks for your opinion.

  353. dear helen,
when i grow up i want to be just like you. you say it like it is and i’ve told people on the nbc saturday night live website to read your blog for a good reality check. those that carry religion and the bible with their hate rants are particularly toxic. the nicest word i can think of for those people? HYPOCRITES. right on, helen, may you live a healthy and long life…

  354. Here’s a little tip about quotation marks, A. Brucato. They don’t go around words randomly. They are used to set off a direct quote or around a word, such as a slang word, that is not a normally used. It is also used to inject irony. So in other words you should have written, “you’re getting somewhat senile” without using the quotation marks, dumbass. Oh, and nice racial remark at the end there, idiot.

Helen, you are now my favorite blogger!

  355. It appears that at your age you’re getting somewhat “senile”. I know that’s not a word people your age like to hear, but I think you’re right smack in the middle of it. And by the way, say what you want about Sarah Palin, but Obama is a big eared, purple lipped liar.

  356. Helen,

Thank you for making my day. I haven’t even read the post on Sarah Palin yet, I just read your most recent post but it is the most refreshing thing I have read in a long while.

  357. Helen,

You hit it right on the nail. That woman is a serious BITCH!!!. She is so ridiculous. And the thing with her 17 year old daughter. How stupid are people to think that this is a good thing, Maybe if she spent more time teaching her daughter about birth control or just simply, KEEPING HER LEGS CLOSED, she would not be pregnant.

    You go girl!!!

  358. Every once in a while Texas produces truly “straight-talking”, no BS women: Molly Ivins, Ann Richards and Helen Philpot! [Not the McCainiac style of "straight talking" which is actually double speak!]

The last two blog posts have been spot on and express what I’ve been feeling quite well. You are a true American patriot. As another writer put it, I wish I lived near enough to be neighbors. I can imagine the conversations around your kitchen table.

Obama/Biden is our only choice to prevent the Old Man and the Bimbo from taking our country even further into the depths….

  359. [...] Helen, she wrote a follow-up blog responding to all the hundreds of comments she received “Yep. I called her a bitch and I am not taking it back.” Helen, I hope I am as sharp as you are when I’m [...]

  360. Brilliant. I’m so glad my friend from the UK forwarded me your blog post, I’ll be back often!! You’re fantastic.

  361. Helen,
I am giving you a standing ovation!!

  363. Helen dear, you are my hero.

It’s refreshing to hear someone speak their mind, unlike Sarah Palin, who speaks some RNC writer’s mind in her dumb down homey way. Since when did it become a crime to be intelligent? I guess intelligent people don’t impulsively react to fear monger speech, the kind McCain (who was once honorable) and Palin (who is, by your analysis, a failed mother as well as politician) spew with reckless abandon.

My late grandmother (a feisty old Irish woman who unapologetically drank bourbon in the afternoon, and smoked unfiltered Pall Malls) would agree with you 169%. It’s a beautiful thing how age gives one a sense of clarity about life…you truly have things dialed…
Too bad McCain hasn’t aged as well…

    Bless you Helen.

  364. A friend of mine sent this link to me to make me smile. It worked. Thanks for the intelligent and hilarious words. Can’t wait to read more!

  365. Helen, you rock! Please sign the Women Against Sarah Palin petition!

  366. Mrs. Philpot, you are the most awesome 82 year old ever. And I actually know a lot of awesome seniors, but you take the cake. I shared your blog post with everyone I could. You are hilarious, brilliant, and they should have had you moderate the debates. Everything you said was dead on rights, thank you so much for being a beacon of common sense amidst the fog of stupidity that prevails over the world today!

  367. No wonder America is in the shape it is. Liberal trash. No morality!

  368. In my comment to your previous message, I wrote of Palin and soccer moms. I meant to type hockey moms. Please forgive me soccer moms, I mistakenly placed you.

Hockey moms; that in itself just goes to show how she is disconnected mentally and physically. How many hockey moms are there in the lower 48s and Hawaii and our protectorates? I venture to guess very few.

With that said, the republican party will only look out for and care about joe beer swigging six packers and hockey moms – which are few and far between.

Just think of all of the intelligent professional republicans “ladies” McCain could have selected and he chooses a pure frozen brained moron. He could have selected any number of intelligent professional republicans “ladies”. Certainly they exist. I can’t believe there are republican women that compare themselves to the idiot from the frozen tundra. If they do, good lord, what has happened? Can you imagine what those intelligent professional republicans “ladies” are thinking as they watch the news, the debates, and SNL? I’ll just bet they are boiling at the ears to think that the world believes all republican women are like Moose Palin.

McCain showed his ass to America by selecting Moose Palin. He needed a good joke and by gosh, by golly, by gum, geewillerkers, wink-wink, he got the joke he needed. And it’s a pure shame she’s too stupid to see that he is using her to say “see I told you, women are morons. Look what I got.”…….. and the men laugh.

Just what America needs; a Precambrian fossil and a joke. We just can’t put those two on the world stage.

I’ll bet Bush is having a field day with this; “look Laura, somebody stupid-er than me”.
And I used to vote republican ……. imagine that…. well, you don’t have to slap me twice.

    A Texan too.

  369. Bravo, my friend.

  370. I think at this point everything original has been said and that I’ll just be an echo of everyone else, but I still have to add my applause to the pile.

(I can’t believe someone had already asked you to be their grandmother…that is what I was gonna say! I have 4 year old twin sons…they’re really, really cute!)

Thank you for being you and sharing that with us and I would also like to thank whoever put that link on the SNL website!

  371. Helen, thank you for an absolutely enjoyable read! Not only was this post wonderful, but so was the post about Palin.

It’s refreshing to hear someone speak plainly, honestly, and intelligently, and I will be back often to see what else you have to say!

    My best wishes to you,

    Mandi Woodroof

  372. Oh sweetie, you ROCK! Sarah Palin Sinks. I have been saying from day one this ‘woman’ is not fit for prime time. She’s McCain arm candy and pander to the nutcase right wing pick. This woman does not represent me, my family and I’m darn tooting, if my vote counts, she won’t be representing my country.

  373. Dear Helen
God bless you! Please keep speaking your mind! My grandmother had to fight for the right to vote. She was a die hard Republican, but I’m sure she would not have voted for this Alaskan nitwit.
    Thank you for speaking out.
    Burr Hubbell

  374. Keep up the good work! We need more honest, smart viewpoints like yours on Palin. If she and McCain win, we will become a third world country FAST. We’re already heading that way, and that will be enough of a push to set us back into the Dark Ages.

For the stupid who think Sarah Palin is folksy, savvy, friendly or smart, they are just fooling themselves and will come to regret their choice if they elect those two, just as sorry as those who made the bad choice which put us into this predicament 8 years ago. But at least they HAD a choice, one nobody will get with McCain/Palin at the helm. They’ll be sure to get rid of every right to freedom we have, take as much money as they can for themselves and leave us without the tiniest bit of health care.

  375. i love you.

  376. Dear Helen-
I was born and raised in Alaska – and your sentiments are shared by many of us. We don’t want Sarah in DC, but don’t want her back in AK either!
    We’re embarassed.

  377. Well done, sugar! Thank you for blogging and sharing your wisdom. Lord knows we need as many intelligent voices as possible right now! xoxo

  378. Dear Ms. Philpott: can I adopt you as my grandmother?

My grandmother was 89 when she passed away earlier this year and nowhere near as tolerant as you. I shudder to think what she would have said if she were around to see Obama win the presidency.

  379. I guess Palin lives in a glass igloo. Isn’t she avoiding testifying in “Troopergate”? And she is the one throwing stones at Obama?? She is as criminal and corrupt as the rest of the “holier than thou” right wing fundamentalists. What a f…ing hypocrite!

  381. To clarify some of my pronouns:

I’m not sure that Gwen, however, could have been as hard-nosed as I believe she would have liked to have been. The Republican machine would have loved to use Ifill as fodder for why Palin bombed the debate. They were just waiting for it. I think Palin was ridiculous enough without anyone being able to claim that Ifill was being hard on her because Ifill supports Obama.

    Keep writing, Helen!

  382. Though I’m not sure I’d call Palin a bitch, I am so offended that she would take this token positioin as running mate. And I’m horrified that she is the face of women in politics right now when we actually have strong women in politics around the world. You’re right on in naming how far she is going to take us back in time. I am so offended!

  383. Haha, wow, you hit the nail on the head.

She’s a bloody moron and I’m glad that she’s a drag on the McCain ticket now that people have seen that. She kept changing subjects while “answering” the questions during the debate – I was embarassed for her. Shouldn’t have been, though, obviously she’s shameless, basically branding Obama as a terrorist and saying he should be disqualified from being president.

  384. Helen,

This is the first time reading your blog, after finding a link on the SNL website, and I have to say, you’re amazing, just amazing. Your frankness and tell-it-like-it-is attitude is fieeeeeeeeerce! Keep up the good work. :)

  385. Helen, you are the bitchy, straight up wind beneath my bingo wings. ♥♥

  386. Damn. and Damn again. If you had any idea of how refreshing it is to read your words, and just step back and say “Yup. That’s what’s been missing: Straight-in-your-face honesty”. If this is what you are like normally, don’t you ever stop being you. You are a treasure Helen. Thank you. I feel like all the grease laid down on my spirit by the media, and the imbeciles on both sides, has been wiped off. You DO realize however, that there are likely to be some who will say that you’re probably senile or in the throes of Alzheimer’s? F**k ‘em.

  387. Helen,

You are a woman after my own heart and I could not agree with you more.
I quit believing the radical right Republicans when they tried to explain to me how Noah had dinosaurs on the Ark.
The GOP has Anne Coulter, who is also a stupid bitch, and Rush Limbaugh, as spokespeople, so what can you expect?

Keep your head up and be proud!

  388. Helen, you nailed it again with choice. As a matter of fact I got into a conversation with a co-worker who was very anti-abortion, he is very conservative and so I asked him a few questions.

Why do all the anti-abortion rallies seem to be populated by 80%men with their kids?
He didn’t know but said, “now that you mention it there does seem to be a much higher proportion of men at those rallies.
Because those men believe that women are inherently inferior and need to be dominated.
    I asked:
    Do you believe in GOD?
Do you believe GOD granted “all men” (& women) free will?
Do you believe in a day of reconing?
Do you think everyone will have to answer for their “choices” in life on that day?
His answer to all of these was yes.
Then I asked him, then why don’t you let GOD decide if what these people chose was wrong?
He thoughtfully said, “I never thought of it that way.”
Why do certain people think they have the right to choose for anyone else?
I’m sick and tired of religious nuts (Taliban,Alqueda,Fundamentalists) trying to tell me what is right. Especially when I see these crooks and sheisters on TV begging for money at the temple. Seems to me GOD might have a problem with that.
If you folks are really anti-abortion why don’t you raise money to open orphanages to offer another choice to women. Do something postive instead of trying to dictate. To coin a phrase WWJD.

  389. You officially rock! I am pretty sure you are on the Secret Service list. You are popular. I do not want this woman becoming VP of this country that is in shambles. If they win. I am SO leaving…

  390. I am very glad I found your post from the SNL site. I agree with you 100 percent. You have stated perfectly what many of us have been thinking. I look forward to checking back and reading more from you.

  391. Hi Helen, my name is Emma. I am 20, so this is the first election I will be voting in. Let me just say that I agree with you entirely, you are truly an inspiration to me and I’m sending a link of your blog to my mom. Palin is not a feminist, she is an objectified poster child for the far right. Any woman that thinks this is progress for the womens’ movement is out of their damn mind. Our mothers and grandmothers did not fight for equal treatment, education, and the right to vote so that some biggot ditz could be vice president. If anyone supports her simply because she has a vagina, they will have no one to blame but themselves for the sexism their sisters and daughters have to face. I want to encourage anyone who reads this to educate themselves about where these politicians stand before voting. Put aside your fears and prejudices, and look at the real issues facing us as a country. Obama is the clear choice for president.

  392. My hat is off to you for saying what millions are probably thinking.

You are an outstanding person! Keep the words of truth coming.

  393. Helen, I think you are much more qualified to run for V.P.!! Keep blogging! My friends and I look forward to reading more :)

  394. Helen…I just wanted to say thank you for keeping it real.
I am not an American citizen but only a resident, unfortunately I won’t be able to vote, I do live in this country and I am terrified by the tought that this woman can be president of the greatest nation in the world.
Please Voters, educate yourselves and do what its best for this country and this world, as an american, is your responsability

  395. Ma’am, I would like to say (as would quite a lot of other people, apparently) that you are AWESOME. Being a first-time voter, I am heartened by your concise assessment–I was afraid for a minute there that this was the best America had to offer. Knowing that even the tried and true can smell the BS gives me hope that we’re not all doomed.

I also can’t believe that such an awesome woman lives near where I grew up. I am now proud to be Texan.

  396. THANK YOU!!

  397. Dear Helen, oh, yes, and you might enjoy this blog perspective on Sarah Palin from two cats: http://douglasbenny2008.wordpress.com

  398. Dear Helen, I wish we were closer geographically (I’m in Washington state), because I would love to have you as a neighbor. I love your spunk, and your intelligence, and I am very pleased to read your blog! Go on being you, and tell it like it is.

  399. I love the way you write, I love the way you think. I am a fan… it’s time for some M&H t-shirts!

And not because I’m enjoying the subject matter (Scara McPalin) so much… I could read your words about anything and enjoy it.

  400. so glad someone sent me your last post – i have forwarded it on to all my friends. thank you! i agree totally and can’t wait to read more. keep blogging! (and, that’s right…I like the “g’s” on the end of my words)

  401. thank you again dear woman. You tell it like it is and it is so refreshing!

  402. You my dear are hilarious and I couldn’t agree more :D

  403. Helen,

I am a tried and true fan of yours now.

And I agree that Gwen Ifill dropped the ball BIG TIME last Thursday, and was disappointed that she didn’t take a bit of responsibility for it when asked about it Sunday on “Meet the Press”. (And I’m usually quite fond of Gwen). The Republicans had already fought to limit the terms of the “debate” to protect Palin, and part of those restrictions were limits on how much back and forth would go on between the two nominees, so it was MOST DEFINITELY Gwen’s responsibility to hold Palin’s feet to the fire. It was disappointing to say the least. Both Ifill and Biden allowed her to act like a damn, cutesy-talking fool, spouting her memorized talking points. And I feel like a precedent has been set where in the last few days she can viciously attack Obama, shrilly lie, hypocritically avoid anything of substance and no one is throwing it back AT HER. She is somehow off the hook at the moment and it’s pretty disgusting.

  404. You go girl!!!!!

  405. Helen – you are a spunky, wonderful, honest old gal – and I hope to be just like you someday when I turn 82!!! You’re an inspiration.

And I agree – Sarah Palin is a manipulative and cunning, not too bright bitch ;-) And shame on John McCain for selling his soul to the extreme right wing with his choice of VP, in order to try to get elected.

    I don’t think it’s going to work, John ;-)

  406. Helen, That is the best most concise description of “choice ” I have heard– plain and simple, we all have a choice–so did Adam & Eve in the garden of Eden(metaphorically or actually)–the only way I ever learned the hard lessons was by experience–thank God there is forgiveness. Cathy

  407. That was a great post. I’m interested to hear what you think of McCain. I’m also interested in hearing what Margaret has to say about Obama and/or Biden.

The world waits with bated breath…

  408. I can’t tell you how refreshing it was to read your blog. It was brilliant. Every time that woman is on the TV my head starts spinning like something out of the exorcist. Wish we could exorcise her! Thanks for saying what we are all thinking!
    You go girl!

  409. Ma’am, I haven’t even read your blog about Sarah Palin yet and I love the things you have to say. It’s good to see that old school tell-it-like-it-is business in effect. That it’s coming from an 82-year-old woman makes it 82 times better.
